The Porridge Pot2017 40th Annual Robert Burns Celebration & Dinner The Burns Committee worked hard to makethis year's celebration extra special. Since thiswas the 40th year our SAS group has spon-sored a Burns Dinner, there were a few addi-tional features added to the evening: recogni-tion of SAS's founding members and a fewwords about the history of our organization byour president, Bill Sterba, comments from ourguest, Davenport's Mayor Klipsch, and presen-tation to all members present of an engravedmedallion commemorating the evening.Founding members able to be with us for theevening were: Bill & Peggy Lee, JanCoffenberry, Sheila Craig, Greg & SharonCrawford. Not attending were: John McFedries,Jean McFedries, Jack McDade. Those no longerwith us: John & Jane Tennant, Chic & BettyThomson, Bill Coffenberry, Warren Johnson. There were 198 members and non-memberswho enjoyed a variety of entertainment whichincluded the talented Blackhawk Pipes &Drums, dinner music by harpist, LauralAlmquist, and a program provided by TheThistle & Heather Highland Dancers from theChicago area and The Loch Peoria HighlandDancers. Rampant Lion from Elmhurst, IL soldtheir wares for the 39th time at our celebration,Bill Hawthorne displayed his art work, severalnice door prizes were given to attendees, andthe silent auction helped provide funding tohelp keep us stay as close to break even as pos-sible. The committee tries to keep the price ofattending as affordable as expenses allow. Thetraditional pageantry was again a part of theevening which included the various toasts andDerek Grant's rousing "Address to the Haggis."Something new this year was the reading ofthe clan names by our MC, Darren Low (asrequested, many had included their clanname(s) on their reservation forms). This maybecome a new tradition since those attendingreally seemed to enjoy this recognition of theirheritage (and maybe even finding out theyhave a relative in the group)! There was amoment of silence in memory of this pastyear's Flowers of the Forest, Bill Fisher and JackMcDonald. Thanks to the many volunteers whodonated their time and effort to making this
year's Burns Celebration the success that it was.The Board is always open to suggestions fornext year. If you have ideas, feel free to contacta Board member.

Haggis ChefsAccording to several comments at theBurns Dinner, this year's haggis wasagain met with approval. Several mem-bers (including some first-timers)showed up on the Saturday before theBurns Dinner to provide their servicesin what has become an annual prepara-tion rite. Those present either blendedingredients, stirred the concoction, orprovided moral support for those whowere.
