We have also included the attainment of BEAM / BEAM Plus Certification as a mandatory requirement in our Design Briefs for all capital projects since 2004, which was long before UGC/ArchSD’s enforcement of this requirement in 2015. With a view to promoting good educational initiatives as well as demonstrating the green technologies and awareness, we have also been collaborating with the academic departments to facilitate research activities in our building projects. Recent examples include sustainable features in the Redevelopment of Block X project and various researches in the “Footbridge” project.

The Redevelopment of Block X comprises a low rise sustainable building housing workshops and offices for Aviation Services Research Centre, a 25m long all weather indoor swimming pool, a 5-a-side indoor football pitch, an indoor gymnasium and student communal facilities. It will also provide landscaped recreational space and serve as a circulation hub for the Main Campus. The completion of the project is targeted for mid-2017.

An iconic footbridge linking the Main Campus and podium level of Block Z is being constructed and scheduled for completion by end 2017. When completed, the footbridge will not only improve the pedestrian connectivity between the Main Campus and Block Z, it will also serve as a test bed for a number of academic research activities.

PolyU has been striving to secure funding from the Government for the construction of the proposed Library Extension and Revitalization project, which will provide an additional floor of “Learning Common” as well as improve some of the existing facilities, over the past few years but in vain. Whilst the project has been submitted again for consideration this year, the chance for getting approval has remained relatively slim.

To address the imminent need, a number of enhancement works, including the increase in seating capacity, replacement of the existing aged building services installation works on 4/F and 5/F, as well as the works for the improvement of indoor air quality, are being implemented and are scheduled for completion by 2019.

The proposed Campus Expansion at Ho Man Tin Slope is planned to accommodate more than 1,200 hostel places and over 10,000 m² net floor area of academic space. Subject to the prompt approval by various government authorities, the project is targeted for completion in stages by 2024.

Neighbouring the heavily-loaded Cross Harbour Tunnel, PolyU has long witnessed problems in the vicinity – poor air quality, overloaded footbridge, poor connectivity within the district and lack of open space.

PolyU, a University where innovation meets application, has come up with an idea to tackle this longstanding problem – a Green Deck over the Toll Plaza.

Linking MTR Hung Hom Station podium and PolyU campus, the proposed 43,000 m2 deck area can accommodate a wide variety of recreational, cultural and sports facilities while solving existing problems as well as improving the environmental quality and connectivity of the nearby districts. This proposal will not only provide people with a green open space to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life, but also help foster sustainable development through a number of research projects undertaken by PolyU academics.

With its environmentally-friendly features and sustainable benefits, the proposal has been recognized with the Merit Award in the Research and Planning category in the Green Building Award 2014, a biennale event jointly organized by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC).

The Green Deck proposal has been promulgated widely in the society with positive responses and constructive comments received. A comprehensive report has been published to share our views with the society openly and endeavor to convince policy makers and the government to support the implementation for the benefits of all citizens and visitors to Hong Kong.
