THE PASTOR’S PAGE This is a Leap Year! That’s especially good news for those of you who have February 29 th birthdays or anniversaries. 2020 is an important year in the life of our Big Beaver UMC, too. It marks the sesquicentennial (175 th anniversary) of the founding of our church and the 25 th anniversary of our worshipping in our current church building. Stay tuned for plans and ways we will celebrate these milestones. Another reason 2020 will be one for the record books for our congregation is that we will be embarking on the Roads to Vibrancy/Church Unique adventure. This process will assist us in assessing where we are currently, identifying our strengths and “growing edges” (formerly referred to as weaknesses), formulating a vision for our congregation’s future and measuring our progress toward that vision. It is sure to be an exciting time for our Church Family. It will also be a challenging time for us, since it will involve change. We will need to evaluate and “let go” of some time-honored programs and traditions and re-direct our efforts and energy toward cre- ating and supporting some new programs and outreach opportunities. Depending on the outcome of the 2020 General Conference in May, this year could also mark some historic re-alignment within our United Methodist Denomination. Centrists, Progressives and Traditionalists will establish new ways of relating to (or no longer relating to) each other. More changes! It could mean changes to the Book of Discipline (around issues of human sexuality and fuller inclusion of members of the LGBTQIA+ community) and/or splintering off to form new denominations. Hopefully even in the midst of all the Leap Year celebrations, celebrating milestones and casting a vision for our local congregation and the potential upheaval within our denomination, we will not lose sight of what lies at the core of the month of February: love. With God’s help, we can be consistent sources of God’s love in our love-starved world. With impeachment being debated and anticipated in Washington, elections coming in November and General Conference delegates aligning themselves according to their differing opinions about where the church should stand on issues of human sexuality and their expression, it will be far easier to divide ourselves into “us” and “them” than it will be to “love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us”. May we accept God’s unconditional love for ourselves and reach out to others (especially those who are not like us and the people we don’t particularly like) sharing God’s love freely and indiscriminately. As the Apostle Paul put it, “therefore, make love your aim”. will have a pizza lunch ($5 per family). Then we will put on our warm weather gear and head

out in the snow to make snowmen and snow angels. Feel free to bring sleds and any other

baptism with the “Touch the Water” curriculum. This is the complementary curriculum to

the “Taste the Bread” communion curriculum that was taught last year. The classes will be

Here is a link for suggested items: https://www.samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-

child/what-goes-in-my-shoebox-suggestions/ . (Toothpaste and candy will not be accepted so

that the boxes can be made easier to reach children in more countries.) Boxes are available

will receive it but also for you!

Easter Celebration

Save the Date! Our Easter Celebration Potluck is going to be on Sunday, March 29th from 12:20-2:00 pm. Potluck lunch followed by special entertainment: back by popular demand—the Troy High Country Fiddlers! Come enjoy some fellowship, fun and food! Sign up on the One Stop Sign up in the bulletin.

Special thanks go out to the following who recently helped update the library: Ron Bernard, Bob Ren-shaw, Fred & Diane Morrell and Brenda Hedge. Here is what happened: We were having trouble getting enough room to shelve our youth books. These books are fiction and non fiction books for Middle School and High School students. Because of the extra wall area needed, we had to rearrange some shelves to get more space. Bob Ren-shaw and Ron Bernard helped get us started for the best way to begin. We called in Fred and Diane Morrell and were able to replace some shelves and change, rearrange and move some doors. The women who sew/knit every other Sunday were informed that we were going to need to move their area also. These women provide our church members with hats, gloves, shawls, baby hats, etc. to those in need of love and care from our congregation. Brenda Hedge leads this group and we are very grateful for her loving cooperation in this project. COME IN AND TAKE A LOOK AT THE WALL AT THE FAR SIDE OF THE LIBRARY. The wall is the one where the TV is still behind the door and new shelves have been added. I am sure there is a book in our library that is just waiting for you!!!! No due dates, no fees...just a lot of good reading ahead. Come and Visit. And by the way, the youth books are great for all ages...that’s why they needed a bigger home.!!!!! Betty Bernard, Librarian
