MESSIAH MESSENGER - JANUARY 2019 PAGE 1
PASTOR’S PAGE by Pastor Scott Peterson
JANUARY SERVICES OF WORSHIP LBW = Lutheran Book of Worship | WOV = With One Voice ELW = Evangelical Lutheran Worship | LS = Lord’s Supper
Sundays at 8:30 a.m. Jan 6 Now the Feast w/LS Jan 13 LBW Setting 2 w/LS Jan 20 Bread of Life w/LS Jan 27 WOV Service of Word & Prayer
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory,
the glory as of a Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth. –John 1:1,14 Dear Disciples of the Messiah,
IMAGINE HOW MANY MORE MIRACLES JESUS COULD HAVE DONE if he had not been distracted by His cell phone? You probably appreciate your phone as much as I do mine…but my New Year’s res-olution is to put my phone away when I am in conversation with others in person. HAVE YOU EVER SAT DOWN WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS and put your cell phone on the table or held it in your hand? What is the non-verbal communication to the person/people we are with when we do that? It is a clear, LOUD non-verbal… “YOU ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT TO ME! If a ding or vibration comes from my phone, I will im-mediately go to who or what I actually care about.” Is that what we want to communicate to the ones we are with? Is that how we wish to be treated by others? Is that the behavior of a disciple? IS THIS A PET-PEEVE OF A CRANKY AGING PASTOR? Perhaps…but I believe that our culture’s deep-ening inability to relate with each other ‘in person’ is hurting us. It is not only rude, it may contribute to our epidemic of depression. Have we reached the point when classes need to be offered to teach us how to talk to each other in person? If we lose our ability to talk with each other in person we naturally turn inward. That is contrary to our calling to be ‘God’s People, Reaching Out’. Bigger picture… FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE COMMUNICATED IN PERSON. God could do whatever God chose to do. Jesus arrived in the flesh to give us God’s most important messages in powerful, down-to-earth ways. God chose to show up in person. That’s what Christmas is all about. God chose to show up for you, because God loves you. GOD’S GREATEST ETERNAL GIFTS ARE GIVEN THROUGH THE CHURCH! Have you ever thought about that? These days that sounds both shocking and archaic, but that is what God still does. Baptism cannot be done on-line. The bread and wine, the body and blood of our Lord cannot be received elec-tronically. Scripture readings and Biblical preaching are best in person. One of the ways God’s saving grace is delivered is through ‘the mutual conversation and consolation of the saints’. This is not done on TV. It happens in person every Sunday morning, and other days of the week too. “YOU ARE NOT THAT IMPORTANT TO ME!” Our Lord NEVER says that to us. How important are you to God? “God so loved the world (including YOU and the person you are talking to) that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life.” (John 3:16) See you soon in church, I hope,
Pastor Scott Peterson

I n 2012, following Messiah’s sanctuary expansion, four members were discuss-
ing the vastly improved acoustics of the space for worship, especially noting
how well it served live music. Conversations turned into ideas, ideas into
plans, and by the fall of 2013, the Music at Messiah Classical Concert Series was formed as an Outreach initiative of Messiah’s Worship and Music Ministry.
The first concert took place on Nov. 10, 2013, and featured the Arsenal Brass
Quintet. Since then, the Series has presented 19 free, full-length concerts. Each concert featured a highly esteemed professional or young emerging musician or tal-
ented ensemble from all over the
Southeast, including a few who hold
close ties to MLC and the cities of
Madison and Huntsville. As a music
outreach initiative, the Series ac-
tively promotes the concerts to the
general public, local music educators, and musicians. And each year, the Series increases its following and recognition as a high-quality concert series in North Ala-
bama. On-air hosts at Huntsville’s Public Radio Station, WLRH 89.3, help in this out-
reach and routinely broadcast live interviews with Series musicians, in addition to of-
fering free Public Service Announcements.
Many of the Series’ musicians are eager to return, and on February 10, at 4:00 p.m., the
Series will welcome back The Brophy Sisters. See the Music Notes on Page 3 for details.
They presented a beautiful, jaw-dropping program at MLC in November of 2016.
From the beginning, the goal of the Series was to be self-supporting, and this re-
mains true. All the funding for these free public concerts comes from donations
collected at the door, donors who become Series sponsors, designated gifts to the Se-
ries, and program advertising. Series sponsorships include an optional dedication to a
loved one in the following year’s programs.
The Series committee is led by founders John Shriver, Lois Graff, and Bob Gustafson,
along with Meredith Kilby, who joined the effort in 2013, and a recent addition Andrew
King. The Series is aided by a wonderful group of past committee members, family,
and church members who provide help with post-concert receptions, sound, lighting, concert staging, moving the organ console, and more.

WORSHIP & MUSIC NOTES Talent Show! January 26th
It’s time to share that talent you have! Dancing, acting,
storytelling, singing, spoon hanging… Now’s your chance!
The Talent Show is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th.
A dinner will precede the show benefiting the On Eagle’s
Wings ministry. Contact Lois Graff for more information or
to sign up.
Ring & Sing - Thank You! Thanks to all who attended and supported the 20th Annu-
al Ring & Sing concert on December 9th. Donations of
over $300 were raised for the Madison Public Library.
Special thanks to Rhonda Gaede, who coordinates this
event every year.
Harpsichord at MLC A lovely harpsichord on loan from Lois Graff found a temporary place in the sanctu-
ary over the last few weeks. Baroque and Renais-
sance harpsichord music was a welcome addition
through the Advent and Christmas seasons.
Music at Messiah February 10 Back by popular demand—the Brophy Sisters
on Sunday, February 10!
Maeve Brophy has a BA from the University of
Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Music in
Piano Performance from Texas Christian Universi-
ty. She also studied at the Manhattan School of Music and at the New England
Conservatory of Music. She has given solo and collaborative performances in Wells, England, the Amalfi Coast, Kiev, Ukraine, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Aspen,
Nashville, and Memphis. Maeve teaches secondary piano at Belmont University and
is an accompanist at Vanderbilt University, where she has performed numerous
recitals with students, faculty, and guest artists.
A scholarship student of Donald Weilerstein and Lucy Chapman at the New England
Conservatory, Linnaea has performed repertoire ranging from solo Bach to duos
with piano to chamber and orchestral music. In April 2015, she won second place in
the Bales Violin Competition at the New England Conservatory. In February 2014,
she was featured as the conductor/soloist of NEC's Chamber Symphony. Linnaea
has performed as soloist with the Nashville Symphony, the Alabama Symphony, and
the Delta Symphony.
Hymn of the Month “Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies”
Charles Wesley (1707-1788), a prolific writer of over 600 hymns, wrote the text for this Epiphany hymn using content from 1 Peter chapter 1: “So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” A German organist, teacher, and composer Johann Gottlob Werner (1777-1822) composed the tune “Ratisbon.”
Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ, the true and only light, Sun of righteousness, arise, triumph o’er the shades of night;

ed to attend our summer
mission trip experience this
summer through Collide in
Memphis, TN. The dates are
June 23-28, and the cost is
$300. A deposit of $150
per student is due January
15 for those wishing to
attend. Collide is a unique
week for youth and adults to
enter into theological dis-
covery, discussion, and re-
flection. By immersing par-
ticipants in experiences out-
side of their everyday con-
text, Collide helps move
youth and adults towards a
more robust faith and better
understanding of God,
themselves, and others.

CHURCH
COUNCIL
COME TO WORSHIP MORE OFTEN IN 2019
HERE IS WHY—
If every member of MLC came to worship one more time in every two month period during 2019 we would be a noticeably different, more vibrant congregation.
Too busy to fit that into an already packed schedule? Think about this: Attending worship is not a draining time demand. Worship is where God recharges us with God’s gifts so the rest of our weekly schedule is more manageable. When God clarifies our priorities life gets easier, not harder.
Remember, God’s greatest saving gifts are available only in the church. Only God knows why, but God entrusted Baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and God’s Word to the church. Yes, the church is far, far from perfect,. That is why God’s forgiveness is freely given to all of us imperfect people when we gather in worship.
Luther wrote in the Small Catechism, “Where there is for-giveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.“ Come and get it!
Worship is not a drain. Worshiping together is a life re-charge gift from God. YOU are needed. And, you NEED what God gives through God’s church.
PLEASE COME TO WORSHIP MORE OFTEN IN 2019!
