Luther and Lutherans
For Lutheran Christians October 31 has significance far beyond it being Halloween. It was on that date in 1517
that an Augustinian monk and seminary professor by the name of Martin Luther nailed a series of statements, which would come to be known as the Ninety-five Theses, to the door of All Saints Church in Wittenburg, Germany.
His purpose in so doing was to request a discussion of clergy and fellow professors on the subject of, as he saw it, the misuse of the “Sale of Indulgences.” Selling Indulgences was a practice by the medieval church which could grant a release from purgatory, family members or friends for a gift of money.
Doctor Luther never imagined that the posting of those “theses” would transform the theology of Christendom and, in fact the course of world history. For Lutherans it would be the springboard to our theology.
The basic teachings of Lutheran dogmas can be summarized in the three “solas”; “Grace Alone”, “Faith Alone”, and “Scripture Alone”.
In our worship service on Reformation Sunday, October 30th, that will be the topic for the message. In addition, on that same date, we will begin a DVD Bible Study entitled “A Man Named Martin.” It is a study published by “Lutheran Hour Ministries” (and yes, we will be using our Bibles .)
I can assure you, by having seen and lead the study previously, you will learn information and have a deeper appreciation of how God used the “man named Martin” for His holy purposes.

October is LUTHERAN WOMEN MISSIONARY LEAGUE Month.
Mission statement: "The mission of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League is to assist each woman of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so
that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world" All women of New Life Church are members.
Mite Boxes are used to receive gifts of gratitude to support the projects of the LWML. Anyone who wishes to contribute to mission may use a MITE box. MITE BOX
offerings are collected and sent to the District on a regular basis by the society. The MN South District keeps 75% of all MITE offerings for district grants. 25% is sent to the national LWML for its mission
goal and programs. Judy West collects MITE money from the large MITE box and sends it in periodically. We have designated the first Sunday of each month as MITE Sunday, but donations can be put in
the box at any time. Direct any questions to Judy West.

A Man Named Martin is a fresh look at Martin Luther. This video and discussion guide goes through the details of Luther's life -- his childhood with his parents Hans and Margaret, his university pursuits, his decision to become a monk, his protestation of Catholic practices,
his scholastic output, his life in hiding, and his roles as husband and father.
Join us on October 30 (Reformation Sunday) as we begin our video guided Bible Study.
Everyday Celebrations
When I flip the calendar over each month, I take note of the “red marks” – the birthdays and anniversaries I have written in red ink. Then I can plan to send cards or gifts to celebrate those milestones. Sometimes I get to add new ones – the birth of a baby, confirmation or graduation.
God designed us to be relational people. He wants a relationship with us, and He wants us to extend love and encouragement to others. One way to accomplish that is to include His Word into our words, so I have been including the new Mustard Seed devotions “Everyday Celebrations” product code LWML 40195; or a Bible verse in my cards. What ways will you find to include Him in your relationships?

The Meyer Minute
Am I the only one weary of this presidential campaign? We go through this every four years, overcoverage by the media, overpromises by the candidates, underwhelmed voters. Ecclesiastes jumps to mind: “Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity” (1:2). Still, we care about our country. There’s never been a nation like this one, and, admitting our personal and national faults, God has used the United States to accomplish good for countless people. Our love of country makes this presidential campaign more troubling because we worry what will happen with either major candidate. Decades ago Rev. Richard Eyer was talking about the prolife cause, and he’s very knowledgeable in life issues. He said, I’m paraphrasing, that America going prochoice was ultimately not the issue. Each one of us has the duty to protect life, whether the culture around us is favorable or not. I translate that to my weariness, to the vanity of this campaign. My calling is to do good today. God has given us grace in Jesus, and we show our gratitude by doing good works to help people (see Ephesians 2:810). God has given me a long list of good works to do. How about you? “The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

New Life Women would like to thank all the donors of school supplies and the sewers of the school bags for them.
We were able to assemble 42 school bags of supplies (up from 38 last year) to be sent to Africa. They will be taken to the Lutheran World Relief
warehouse in So. St. Paul This is an annual fall project for us. If you like to sew, ask Judy West or
Kathy B. for the easy pattern for making the school bags. Watch for news on more projects.
DAILY READING FOR PERSONAL GROWTH, “40 DAYS WITH GOD”

Theme: Mustard seed faith. Little is much when God is in it.
One day I took a jar of jelly out of the cabinet and tried to open it. I tried and tried to open the jar, but my hands just weren't strong enough to hold the jar tightly and turn the lid. It is a little embarrassing to try to open a jar and not be
able to do it, so I decided that I needed to increase the strength in my hands. I found this hand exerciser to help me. You have probably seen one of these. You just squeeze the two sides together. If you don't have one of these, you can do the same type of exercise by squeezing a rubber ball. By doing these exercises every
day, my hands will surely be strong enough to open a jar of jelly. It doesn't take a huge amount of strength to open a jar of jelly, does it? No, if you just have a little strength, that will be enough. How many of you know what faith is? Faith is trusting in God and depending on him. Faith is like a muscle, if you exercise your faith every day, it will become stronger. We are sometimes very quick to say that we have faith in God. We say that we believe that He can do anything, but then we act as if everything depends on us. That isn't a very strong faith, is it? One day, Jesus was teaching his disciples about the importance of forgiving others. He told them that even if someone sins against you seven times a day, you must forgive them every time. The disciples thought that would be a very hard thing to do, so they said to Jesus, "Show us how to increase our faith." Jesus answered them, "If you had faith, even as small as a mustard seed, then you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you." Wow, that is amazing faith, isn't it? Do you know why that is possible? It is because God's power doesn't depend on our strength. It all depends on him! There is a song that we sing that says it all. "My God is so big, so strong and so mighty. There's nothing my God cannot do!" All we need is a just a little bit of faith! Dear Lord, help us to exercise our faith each day, but also help us to remember that your strength is enough for anything we need. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

I feel like I should write something about the first Presidential debate, but what?
A line from a hymn comes to mind, “And guide us when perplexed.” The pundits are judging the candidates’ performances, but even they add that this is a most unusual campaign; so who knows? The majority of Americans are not feeling super positive about the next top leadership of our country, at least not now.
That hymn line is a prayer. Followers of Jesus go to work today under two sovereigns, the government and God. Whatever perplexes us about earthly rulers becomes secondary when we consider our heavenly citizenship. “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have be-lieved” (John 6:68-69). In any perplexity we go to our Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus. “Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long” (Psalm 25:5).
Not confident in the candidates? The first line of the hymn is “Now thank we all our God.” Now. “Our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20).
Today will be a great day.
“Oh, may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us
And keep us in His grace and guide us when perplexed
And free us from all ills in this world and the next.”
