TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
OPLATKI is coming! OPLATKI is coming!
Advent starts on the weekend of November 28th and 29th. Come to the gift shop for all your Ad-vent needs...Oplatki, calendars, candles and holders! Open after Masses. We’d love to see you!
Eight hundred years ago, the church’s practice of penance underwent major revision as theologians, called scholastics, reflected on the practice of their day. By then, penance was normally a very secret rite, celebrated com-pletely apart from the community. Public penance had mostly disappeared behind the walls of monasteries and the cloister grills of convents. The scholastics trimmed penance down to bare essentials, even sweeping aside age-old traditions like a laying on of hands and prayers of absolution. All that was left was the confessor’s simple statement, “Ego te absolvo,” “I absolve you.” In 1614 a new ritual book tried to make penance more public and solemn. It suggested, but did not require, that the priest wear a surplice and stole, and hear the con-fession in a confessional. For the first time, we have the directive that the priest be separated from the penitent by a screen, a rule that some bishops applied very strictly. By the 1940s, large numbers of Catholics availed them-selves of the sacrament of confession every Saturday, and most people thought confession was a prerequisite for Communion. In some urban parish churches, confession-als were staffed, usually by the junior priest, for several hours every day, even during the celebration of Mass. It is remarkable how quickly things changed, but as we have seen, the system has collapsed before and what of-ten comes next is an impulse of the Spirit, new life, and a fresh start. —Rev. 100,000 Rosary Beads
Congratulations to our Rosary Makers- Since starting in 1995 our dedicated stewards have produced 100,000 sets of Rosary Beads. They have been sent to missions across the world, given to children in our Religious Education program, distributed by the Home and Hos-pital and the Prayer Shawl Ministries and left in our chapel for anyone who needs them . Today, during the 12 noon Mass, we bless the beads and our Ministry for their milestone of achievement.
How many apostles were listed in the Gospels? Thirteen, Ten, Eleven, or Twelve?
Twelve. They were Peter, An-drew, Jam
es, John, Phillip, Bartholom
ew, M
atthew, Thom-
as, Thaddeus, Jam
es II, Simon,
and Judas. Mat-
thias, the apostle nam
ed to re-place Judas, was not m

O God, source and giver of all things,
You manifest your infinite majesty, power and goodness
In the earth about us: We give you honor and glory.
For the sun and the rain, For the manifold fruits of our fields:
For the increase of our herds and flocks,
We thank you. For the enrichment of our souls
with divine grace, We are grateful.
Supreme Lord of the harvest,
Graciously accept us and the fruits of our toil,
In union with Jesus, your Son, As atonement for our sins,
For the growth of your Church, For peace and love in our homes,
And for salvation for all. We pray through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
REMEMBERING THE “EVERYDAY SAINTS” All Saints Day, November 1, and All Souls Day November 2, are two excel-lent opportunities to celebrate the lives of those “everyday” saints in your life, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends, etc. Pull out family photo albums and videos. Invite your family to reminisce and share stories about the lives of those close to you who have passed away. Visit the cemetery where your loved ones are buried. Take a moment to pray and remember the person’s life and what he or she meant to you.
WE REMEMBER THEM In the rising of the sun and in its going down
WE REMEMBER THEM in the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter
WE REMEMBER THEM in the opening of buds
and in the warmth of summer WE REMEMBER THEM
when we are lost and sick of heart
WE REMEMBER THEM when we have joys we yearn to share
WE REMEMBER THEM so long as we live, they too shall live
for they are now a part of us AS WE REMEMBER THEM.
REMEMBERING THE DECEASED
Down through the ages, Christian communities have honored and remembered their dead. We see their names on the walls and win-dows of churches and on grave markers in cemeteries. We read their names in prayers of intercession and recall their anniversaries. Especially during the month of November - with its solemnity of All Saints and commemoration of All Souls - Catholics both remember the dead and prepare for their own death. We have another opportunity to remember those who have died. Our “Book of the Names of the Dead” will be in the back of church.
Parishioners are invited to enter the names of family members who have died since this time last year. The book will be left out for the month of November. All those who have been remembered will be prayed for during the intercessions at our liturgies during November.
Faith Forma on Ques on: Does the Soul/Spirit actual die when the body expires?
Soul signifies the “spiritual principle in humanity.” Because the Greeks o en emphasized that the soul need-
ed to escape the body, we o en have a tendency to “prefer” the soul to the body.
However, this is not Catholic theology. The body is nothing without the soul and the body gives anima on to
the soul. They work in consort throughout human life. We care for our bodies respec ully.
The soul is immortal. It is the essen al part of the human body that likens us to God’s image. It does separate from the body
at death but will also reunite with the body at the final resurrec on. - Mike Hayes Website: bustedhalo.com
