Second Sunday of Lent February 27–28, 2021

A Note from Our Pastor,

I hope that all of us are now firmly settled into the Season of Lent and embracing Lenten practices that bring Christ more to the center of our hearts and lives, help us become more

attuned to others in their need, and strengthen us in the virtue of self-restraint. It was great to see the large number of folks at the Ash Wednesday Masses and Service, a slight uptick in parishioners at our daily 9am Masses, and an in-creased number of people at last weekend’s Masses for the First Sunday of Lent. May it continue, please God!

Let me call to your attention several opportunities indicat-ed below in this bulletin to deepen our relationship with Christ and strengthen our lives as His disciples this Lent. On Monday evenings from 7 to 8pm high school teens are invited to take part in Bonfire and Prayer in the Gathering Space. Wednesday evenings the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion (Confession) is celebrated in the Library/Meeting Room in the back of the Gathering Space. At the same time on Wednesday evenings during Lent there will be Exposition, Adoration, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel from 6:30 until 8pm. There is also another opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration each week—after the 9am Mass Friday mornings in the Upper Church. Before the 9am Mass each day there is the recita-tion of the Holy Rosary.

For young adults in their 20s and 30s there is an oppor-tunity for faith development entitled “Reflection on Ac-tion: Finding Meaning and Purpose in Your Life” guided by Sr. Jeanne Gribaudo, CSJ, and Sr. Betsy Conway, CSJ (online sign-up information can be found in this bulletin). Many of you, I’m sure, remember Sr. Jeanne who served as Pastoral Associate here at St. Agatha’s a number of years ago and who is currently on the theology faculty at Merrimack College.

As we did prior to Christmas, given the space limitations that COVID-19 Safety Protocols place upon us, we are ask-ing your help to let us know your plans and intentions re-garding participation at our Parish’s Holy Week and Easter Liturgies this year. You may recall, that based on the great input you provided us for Christmas, we were able to have a very reverent and safe celebration of our Christmas Masses. A similar, but somewhat briefer survey has been created for the upcoming Easter Triduum and Easter Sun-day Masses. Some of you may have already received this survey via Constant Contact, but for those who have not, you can find the survey link below in this bulletin with the heading, “We are looking forward to celebrating Easter at St. Agatha Parish!” Please take just a couple of minutes to fill this out, because it will help us enormously in our plan-ning for Holy Week and Easter this year.

Please note that there is a special Second Collection this week to support the Church Around the World, assisting Catholic charitable relief organizations across the globe. In addition, this weekend launches this year’s Catholic Appeal for our Archdiocese of Boston. Mr. Stephen Wessling who is our parish’s Appeal Coordinator again this year will be speaking briefly at all our weekend Masses about the variety of ministries that are funded by our donations to the Catholic Appeal. There is an excellent and brief video about the way parishes such as our own have been greatly assisted by the programs and the offices of the Archdiocese which are fund-ed by the Catholic Appeal. You can find this video on our parish website and on our Parish Facebook Page.

A well-known and longstanding member of our St. Agatha Parish staff has a prominent role in this year’s Catholic Appeal video. Mr. Jack Riley, our parish’s Director of Finance and Operations is in his 19th year at that very important position. At the end of this fiscal year (June 30, 2021) Jack will be retiring from his position at St. Agatha Parish. In my 5 years as your pastor I have relied heavily on Jack’s expertise and insight. To have someone such as Jack who knows the ins and outs of the finances, budgets, physical plant, and the many and various activities that take place on our parish and school property has been an enormous blessing for me. While as pastor I bear the ulti-mate responsibility for the parish’s financial well-being and for the material well-being of the parish property, hav-ing Jack who is so knowledgeable about all the details of these realities, who has sharp and precise institutional memory about our parish, who is so committed to our par-ish and her mission, and who is so competent, honest, and discrete in fulfilling his role here, it has enabled me to, quite simply, be a priest and a pastor for this very special parish, without having to worry or lose sleep about the everyday upkeep of the buildings and our financial bottom line. For this and for many other reasons as well, I am ex-tremely grateful to Jack Riley. Because of Jack’s impend-ing retirement, I am posting on the Archdiocesan website (RCAB.org) Jack’s position as Director of Operations and will be forming a committee to interview folks who will be applying for this position. We are hoping that Jack’s successor can begin working here on or near June 1, so that the newly hired Director of Operations will be able to spend his/her first month getting the “lay of the land,” so to speak, by working with and learning from Jack. So, if you know someone you think would be a good candidate for this position, please suggest that the person go onto RCAB.org and begin the application process. Thank you.

Have a blessed second full week of Lent!

Fr. Palardy

THE WEEKLY UPDATE

Each fiscal year at approximately this time we make an adjustment in our Weekly Offertory total to reflect a cou-ple of additions. First, some parishioners choose to make their Offertory Gift on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual or even annual basis. Including such large gifts in a single weekly Offertory total would give a skewed total for that week. Secondly, smaller non-weekend collections such as Holydays are counted separately but ultimately become part of the Offertory total reported at the end of the year. Including those contributions in the weekly total would likewise yield a skewed number for that particular week-end. So approximately mid-way through the fiscal year we tabulate those two donation sources and add them to our reporting. Thus far this fiscal year the combined total comes to $23,714. So that number was subtracted from the deficit of $43,630 reported last week, thereby reducing the deficit prior to this past weekend to $19,916. This past weekend we fell $1,400 short of our budgeted target which brought the deficit as of the moment to the $21,316 you see below. At the end of the fiscal year we will do a similar exercise to reconcile the total for the whole fiscal year.

In addition to the Weekly Offertory reported below, $2,118 was contributed on Ash Wednesday, and an addi-tional $2,045 was contributed to the Special Collection for Catholic Charities. Thank you for your support.

FEATURED WEEKLY READING

THEME: Seeing Jesus

As you hear this familiar story today, what words or phrases strike you? What in this reading touches your heart? What image from Mark’s Gospel lingers in your memory?

Gospel : Mark 9:2-10

Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

Organ Restoration UpdateIf you attended the 4:30pm or 11:30am Mass this past weekend, you may have noticed organ music coming from the back of the church.

The antiphonal division of the organ has been reinstalled, tuned and balanced —the first division to be completed in our organ restoration project. I am thrilled with its new sound, and pleased that it is available while most of the other pipes are under-going restoration.

Many churches house all the organ pipes in a loft in the back of the church.

While most of our organ pipes are housed behind the altar, we are fortunate to also have the 5-rank antiphonal division in the gallery. Among other architec-tural and liturgical considera-tions, the pipes-in-the-back de-sign serves a practical pur-pose—that of encouraging con-gregational singing by provid-ing the support of the organ sound from behind the pews. Many people feel more confi-dent about singing when their voice blends in with the music around them. When we are again able to sing together in church, the antiphonal division will do its part to help us sing out with joy to the Lord.

In Christ, Julie Fay, Music Director

Music Ministry Notes

The antiphonal division pipes were removed for restoration. The large pipes at the left are the very front row of pipes, or the facade pipes, which are visible from the main church.

Pastoral Planning February 28 ~ Second Sunday of Lent

The readings this week deserve to be read, and reread and pondered. “God put Abraham to the test.” A bit scary, isn’t it? Think about it: God put (insert YOUR name) to the test. Perhaps one test you face arises from the disruptions caused by the pandemic—feelings of discouragement, isolation, doubt and fear to name a few! Despite the various difficul-ties that may need to be faced, listen again to the words God speaks in today’s gospel—“This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.” Open your heart to Christ; listen attentively to what he is speaking to you, asking of you. How will you respond?

For the two week period of February 28–March 13, the Vigil Candle above theTabernacle will be lit in memory ofFrank Foley, May the light of God’slove surround you.

by Joan Chittister

Thursdays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25 ● 10:00–11:30 AM

In The Time Is Now, Sister Joan Chittister, OSB, a beloved nun and social activist, draws on the wisdom of prophets, both ancient and mod-ern, to help us confront the societal forces that attempt to silence the sacred voices among us.

Pairing scriptural insights with nar-ratives of the truth-tellers that came before us, Sister Joan offers a com-pelling vision for readers to combat complacency and to propel us to-ward a world of justice, freedom, peace, and empowerment.

In addition to the protocols currently in place for in-person Mass attendance, if Milton is in the Red Zone, we will be checking temperatures before entering the church and will continue to collect contact tracing information for all Mass at-tendees. Please submit your contact information on our web-site (here) before coming to Mass. To save time, please have your contact information written out to hand to the ambassador before entering the church.

Please note that any notice will keep the name of the person who tested positive confidential and only include the Mass (date and time) which they attended and any other relevant non-personal infor-mation.
