There is always so much happening behind the scenes with NWEA! With our successful annual conference in May, the momentum is still going. We are moving forward in bringing more options in education, certifi cation, and information for our membership. (i.e., Collections Systems training on August 6th in Las Vegas.) Currently, on-line testing for certifi cation has been made available. Make sure you read the brief article about it in this newsletter.

Also to be seen soon…. and to those who have visited our website… be encouraged! It will soon be getting a major facelift! Our website will be updated to provide you more options and be easier to use.As some of you may know,

the NWEA is looking into mandatory continuing education requirement in order to maintain/renew wastewater certifi cation for Nevada. With the rise of new technologies, alternative treatment, changing ideas, etc., Nevada needs to keep abreast and remain in the race to keep our professionals trained and up-to-date. Most certifi ed professions require continuing education and we would like to promote the same type of professionalism. Nevada is one of the few states remaining that does not require CEU’s, which has made reciprocity diffi cult for many individuals moving into different States.

An electronic survey was recently sent to Nevada certifi ed operators to get their input. For those who have received it, please take the

time to respond. If you have not received this survey, contact us by email and it will be forwarded to you.

As your new President, I will do my best to keep things moving forward. With all of the great NWEA volunteers and their talents, it will be a much easier job. Many thanks to our Past President, Leslie Long; she did an excellent job and still continues to do so! Please check in from time to time and get updates. You can email me directly through our website link. Feel free to offer your thoughts and opinions and tell us how we can do a better job. You may not be able to serve as volunteer, but you can help by telling us what you think. Please remember that NWEA is a totally volunteer organization and works for you. Thank a volunteer the next time you see one!

Director’s ReportBy Rick Warner

The 81st Annual Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC 2008) is drawing ever closer – and there’s still time to join more than 20,000 water quality professional from around the globe. For 2008 - the largest water quality event in North America is heading to the Windy City! The latest in water quality research, technology and services will be on display at WEFTEC.08. This year’s technical program and list of exhibitors is impressive and Chicago promises to be a great host city. Get more details at www.weftec.org.

Eric Leveque, Hannah Wilner, and Candice Siwarga continue working on WEFMAX and WEF Young

Professional Summit in 2009 in Las Vegas. I continue working on the House of Delegate Steering Committee and House Working Groups. This past year the House of Delegates WEF Staff are enhancing the WEF Web-Based content and on-line capabilities – look for improvements by 2009.And you’ve all read this before – and it’s still true today - if you get value from belonging to WEF and NWEA, and want to see these organizations continue to serve its vital role well beyond your involvement – then perhaps it’s time for you to serve on a national committee. WEF’s technical committees provide the expertise that makes WEF one of the world’s leading water quality organizations.

WEF committees participate in developing WEF policy positions, writing and peer-reviewing books and training materials, and delivering workshops and conferences. Currently, more than 2500 WEF members participate in WEF committee activities. Visit www.wef.org for more specifi c information about WEF’s nearly 40 committees. Volunteering on a WEF committee is an opportunity for you to help shape the water quality industry today and for tomorrow.

As always, I hope you consider and share with me ways that WEF can serve NWEA more effectively. Thank you for the privilege to serve as your WEF Delegate.

High Performance Plus Substantial Energy Savings: New Generation EMU Submersible Mixer Technology Provides Both

The advanced blade-form and large propeller diameters of the new generation EMU submersible mixers from Wilo provide an energy savings of approximately 10 percent, when compared with similar submersible mixers. Using thrust-to-power ratios (as defi ned in the new ISO 21630 standard, which allows an objective comparison of mixers) it has been demonstrated that new generation EMU submersible mixers (such as the EMU Maxiprop TR 226 and EMU Megaprop TR 326) can substantially reduce energy costs. Terry Rouse, President and CEO, WILO EMU USA LLC, explained, “These new submersible mixers not only provide a quick payback on your mixer investment, but also conserve energy resources, in general—which is benefi cial to everyone in the long run.”According to information published by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) unit energy consumption for wastewater treatment is presumed to be about 2,500 kWh per million gallons and the cost per unit is expected to increase by 5% to 10% by 2022 due to increasing treatment requirements. This factor, plus the rising cost of each kWh, makes the option of a 10% energy savings during mixing an important step in the right direction.

WILO can provide the specifi c energy savings potential of its new mixing technology for any facility—given the basic parameters of: application, operating hours, tank volume and current energy costs per kW. This service is provided free-of-charge to all facilities. WILO EMU USA LLC, headquartered in Thomasville, Georgia, provides heavy-duty municipal and industrial pumps and mixers specifi cally designed for water and solids-handling applications, including pumps for sludge, tertiary waste, and potable water. The company is part of the WILO AG. WILO AG is one of the leading manufacturers of pumps and pump systems for heating, cooling and air-conditioning technology and for water supply and sewage and drainage. WILO AG is now represented in more than 70 countries and employs over 6,000 employees throughout the world. In 2007, turnover amounted to more than 1.4 billion U.S. Dollars.
