SPEAKING PROGRAM

Finding a Homeplace: Black Women Clergy Planting Roots in the Church

Guest Speaker: Reverend Kirstin Boswell-Ford, Associate Chaplain for the Protestant Community at Brown University

Reverend Kirstin Boswell-Ford is an American Baptist clergy-woman and holds a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago Divinity School. She is currently completing a doctoral dissertation in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology of Religion at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Her writing focuses on analyzing the call narratives of African American clergywomen, and examining how they successfully or unsuccessfully navigate the societal and denominational barriers that impact their ability to feel as if they have been faithful to their vocational yearnings. Before coming to Brown she was Protestant Chaplain at Bentley University and the Director of Operations for the International Association of Black Religions and Spiritualities, an international non-profit organization based at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Reverend Boswell-Ford has also served in congregational ministry for the last 10 years, and is currently on the pastoral staff of Union Baptist Church in Cambridge, MA.

Reverend Boswell-Ford is married to Reverend Paul Robeson Ford, Senior Pastor of Union Baptist Church in Cambridge, MA, and together they are raising their three children.

n July an important friend of the RIHS passed. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Goff Robinson, orMeg, as she was widely known. She was one ofthe most important philanthropic partners of the

RIHS in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but fewof you probably knew her name. In her life, she wished toremain anonymous, quietly supporting the organizations shetreasured. Now, I am very glad to be able to share with youeven a small part of her story and gifts.

Meg Robinson grew up on the banks of Narragansett Bay inEast Providence. The daughter of Newell Darius Goff andEva Agnes (Crane) Goff, Meg attended the Barnard Schoolin Providence, the Graham-Eckes School in Daytona Beach,FL, and House in the Pines School in Norton, MA. Shethen attended Wheaton College, where she received a B.A.in English History in 1947. To round out her skills, sheattended the Catherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Bostonand eventually became a medical secretary to a surgeon inProvidence. She married Charles Albert Robinson in 1954and three years later, they had a son, Thomas Goff Robinson. She had been a member of the Junior League of Providenceand when the Hope Club opened its door to women asmembers, she was one of the first to join, even though bythat point she had long been a resident of SoutheasternPennsylvania. Not far from much of my family, in fact.

Who was Meg? She was a brilliant and opinionated, thoughtful, and shrewd woman with a rich, resonant laugh. She was a gifted painter, historical researcher and writer. She authored two books for the Chester County HistoricalSociety before she began writing a book of even more specialmeaning to her, “Newell D. Goff—The Life of a YoungEntrepreneur at the Turn of the Twentieth Century,” whichwe published. Not yet done, she and her husband wrote “TheIngalls and the Hoyts—19th Century Windsor Chairmakersof Danville, Vermont.” All of these show the fascinationMeg had not just with history, but with the intersection ofcreativity and business, a trait she prized and supported.

Meg also gave her time to the organizations she loved: theRISD Museum, Chester County Historical Society, theChester County Art Association, the Chadds Ford HistoricalSociety, and most special to us, she served as a trustee to theRIHS for six years.

Meg supported the RIHS as a member and trustee, buteventually focused her giving on the creation of the AnnualGoff Lecture. In 1994, she founded the Goff Institutefor Ingenuity and Enterprise, which ten years later turnedinto the Newell D. Goff Center for Education and PublicPrograms, which continues today.

It was my great privilege to get to know Meg over my nineyears at the Society. As the Director of the Goff Center, Ivisited Meg and her husband Charles on many occasions. Wetalked for hours about history and Rhode Island. She sharedarticles and books, her thoughts and her time. They openedtheir home to me and my father, even taking us (with Charlesas our intrepid guide) to see one of their other special places:the Hagley Museum, in Delaware.

Meg was an indefatigable supporter of me as a professional, asthe first voice of the Goff Center and then as the first womanexecutive director of the RIHS. Her support was felt keenlyand greatly appreciated.

As a historian I often find myself thinking about the legacyI will leave: haveI made the world,in any aspect, better than whenI got here? I can’timagine that Megever had to wonderabout that. Thegifts she gave to theRIHS alone touchmore than 75,000students a year. Her generosity wasleveraged to helpbring millions ofdollars from theFederal governmentinto RhodeIsland to provideprofessional development to our state’s history teachers.

Meg’s gifts will be with the Society forever. Her supportlives on in our endowment where every year, a piece is usedto reach tens of thousands of learners of all ages. It is the giftof inspiration and empathy for generations to come. This iswhat she sought through her wide-ranging philanthropy – tosustain the works that she believed in with all of her heart.

Meg’s gifts will also live with me forever. She was a smileand a card, a good book she thought I’d enjoy, a discussion ofgreat museums and approaches to teaching. She was graceand poise and intelligence--a life to live up to.

I am proud and honored to have called Meg a friend. And wewill work every day to deserve the faith she had in us all.

Farewell, Meg, a true friend to me, to us, to Rhode Island.

In a time when women were rarely published and couldnot vote, Catherine Read Williams was a self-supportingauthor and ardent supporter of the Suffrage movement.Born in 1787, she was the daughter of sea captainAlfred Arnold. As a young woman, Miss Arnold met aMr. Williams, a sixth-generation descendant of RogerWilliams, and they were married in New York beforemoving to the western part of the State. After only a fewyears, Mrs. Williams fled with their infant daughter forProvidence, where friends judged the marriage ‘a mostunfortunate one.’ Mrs. Williams petitioned for divorce,

with the support of her Providence friends, and though denied at first, persisted, until she won.

She supported herself by opening a school, and with her writing. She becamepart of Providence’s literary and intellectual circles, and developed an interest inpolitics. Catherine Williams was not the only woman who supported the suffragemovement and Thomas Wilson Dorr: the women were described in the anti-Suffrage press in Providence as “Dorrites in petticoats,” but at least one- half ofthe attendance at public suffrage meetings were women.

This divorced, political woman writer must have scandalized Providence society, even as she commanded its respect. She was on the leading edge of change, andthanks to her, we live in a very different world.

“I CHOOSE TO SUPPORT THE SOCIETYwith a recurring donation – every month aportion of the total amount of my annualdonation is charged to my credit card. Ivalue the work of the Society and wantto be as supportive as possible in helpingit to achieve its mission, and with a childin college, paying over time is simply lessonerous. Having it charged to my credit cardis also much more convenient than monthlyreminders, and I can change my donation oreven cancel it at any time.”
