WE GET LETTERS!

EE ach year we are thrilled to receive a tremendousnumber of heartfelt letters, cards and emails from campers, parents, staff members and many others reflecting on thevalue of the Wenonah experience.

Here is just a small sample following the 2012 season.

FROM A NEW CAMPER PARENT:I just wanted to thank you for allowing my son the opportunityto attend Camp. He had a great time and came home withmany new friends. He’s already asking if he can go backnext year. For a kid who enjoys spending time indoors heseems to have found himself in a new and healthy lifestylethanks to you.

FROM A NEW CAMPER PARENTOur son just completed a one week introductory program. He loved Camp Wenonah! He was so excited to tell usabout his adventure. He said that his counsellors wereamazing! He also said that he really liked the food. This isa big thing because he is a somewhat fussy eater but hesaid that he really liked the meals. So please, send a bigthank you to the Chef in addition to all the Camp staff whomade him feel very comfortable, safe and most importantlyfor creating a truly fun and special environment at Camp.He said that he had a great time with his cabin mates andmade a lot of friends at Camp. He really seemed to connectwith the kids in his cabin. He loved kayaking so much!He said that, “I learned how to steer, to row, go backwardsand forwards and target where I go.” What a greatmetaphor for personal growth! He told us that he lovedCamp so much that he definitely wants to return next yearand said that he would like to go for two weeks. ThanksCamp Wenonah for making our son’s first ever Campexperience a great one!

FROM A LONGTIME CAMPER PARENT:I wanted to express to you how much we appreciate thecharacter and quality of Camp Wenonah. Our daughter justcame back from another period at Camp and she had awonderful time, as always. This was her 7th summer atWenonah. She went the first time at 7 years of age, and didnot know anyone at Camp. But she loved it back then, andgoing back every year has been a high priority for her.

When I picked her up last night I was struck by the peacefuland loving but also energized atmosphere at Camp. Therewere no “adults” in sight, but large groups of young peopleamicably and cheerfully intermingling. I saw no electronicgadgets, but many hugs and a few teary-eyed and warmgood-byes. You have created a very special atmosphere atCamp, and the increasingly diverse nationalities representedoffer another valuable dimension. Many thanks and congratulations on running such a wonderful camp.

FROM A CLEAR LAKE COTTAGER:I have said it before and I will say it again. We love havingyou on the lake. We love watching all the boats out on thelake, we love the large war canoe that comes over to thetown dock (right beside our cottage), we love going by inthe boat at night and listening to the songs and just love theidea of so many young people coming together and sharingnothing but goodness of the heart. We were out one nighta couple of years ago with some visitors and your campershad sent out little tin plates with candles on them and Iswear it was like we were in a dream. It was the mostenchanting thing I have ever seen and will never forget it.The next morning when we were out, there was no sign ofit at all so not only did you provide a beautiful vision thenight before but everything was cleaned/picked up by thenext morning. Nothing but good coming out of Wenonah! What you do and have there is so important.

FROM A LONGTIME STAFF MEMBER:I’m moving to Europe for four months starting January for awork term at a very interesting firm. I know I'll be challengedby the daunting task of setting up a new life, being theanonymous stranger in a big city and working in a very fast-paced office with incredibly intelligent people, but Iknow I can be confident that I'll handle it well. This is almostentirely because of Camp.

At the end of WCIT I experienced a sort of catharsis - Isuppose it was ‘THAT’ moment you’re talking about. Athome I had always felt as if the person I could be was somuch greater than who I appeared to be to those aroundme - I always knew at Camp that wasn't true. I was reallymyself, and in WCIT I realized that I could change my ownlife and be that person at home as well. I took off into thewoods for two hours after my feedback and wrote down alittle message I still read to myself every day. I took thatmoment and decided to change my life - I can’t imaginewhat I would be doing with myself if I hadn't.

I decided to live healthy, cherish those who make me smile, share as much of my heart as possible with those aroundme, and enjoy every moment of it even in the face of failureand loss. I knew then that I could be the man I wanted tobe and I decided to do it.

I really do think that this will be - for a long time, if notforever - THE defining moment of my life. I can't thank youenough for setting it up. Since then I’ve been accepted toschools across the country and now I’m going to have thechance to work at an influential international firm. I can seethat I'm going to have a chance to influence the field - I’mat the top of my class and on the Dean's List already, I’mrunning the student government and always seem to beteaching my peers. I know that because of Camp I’m goingto be able to make a real positive change in the world.

Camp isn’t something you can put into words or make coherent at once. It's impossible to see it all and I thinkthat’s just the beauty of it. One of the biggest reasons Icouldn’t stop crying near the end of Camp was because Icould see all of these beautiful lives - everyone going off indifferent directions - and Camp is the one place where theyall intersect for those beautiful few months or weeks - ordays. Just to have been involved is such a blessing.

I hope I can keep sharing the Camp spirit with thosearound me, and I know that I will for some time. I willforever carry it with me. I can’t thank you enough, andeven in this lengthy e-mail I can’t seem to put it all down.I'll forever be grateful for the amazing place you've createdand Camp will always remind me that a building is moreabout the people in it than anything else.

The program (modelled after the school-based Bondar Challenge) focusses on participants using the camera as a tooland a gateway to learning about the environment. As part ofWenonah’s photography PIC, campers were challenged tocapture an image in the environment that related to an aspectof biodiversity and then wrote an artist’s statement to accompany their photo. The competition challenges campersto infuse art with science and science with art. The ultimategoal of the program is a lifelong love of nature, protection ofthe environment and global citizenship.

Camp Kivita was founded based on aneed for children with transplants and end stage organ disease to havethe opportunity to meet other children who have had similar healthcareexperiences and to be able to participate in a normal childhood campexperience that improves their sense of competency, independence,self-esteem, make new friends, learn new skills, and just have fun!

This will be our fifth summer operating, but we believe it will be ourbest yet! In 2009, thirty children attended our camp and in 2010 ournumbers grew to forty children but the demand was far greater thanspace available. In 2011 and 2012 we expanded to allow more childrento attend and offered children waiting for a transplant and living withend stage intestinal, liver and kidney disease (on dialysis) the opportunityto attend camp. In 2013 it was time to find a new camp home andexpand programming and leadership opportunities for our children. Weare truly excited to be joining with Camp Wenonah to offer our childrenthe best possible summer ever and feel like we have found the bestplace ever to call our new camp home!

Camp Kivita is organized by the Transplant Camp Advisory Committeeand leadership team. We are a group of volunteers passionate about ensuring that all children with transplants and organ failure have the opportunity to attend summer camp. Our primary goal is fundraising tocover the cost of camper registration fees and ensuring safe and optimalprogramming. We continue to strive to allow all children who are medically stable after transplant or those living with end stage organ disease the opportunity to attend camp at no cost to experience themagic of camp. Camp could not happen without the generous financialsupport of our donors which include The Kidney Foundation of Canada, the Citron Family (Ken’s Fund), KRG Insurance, David Foster Foundation,Doug Ghent Painting, the Ben Walker Foundation, and all the individualdonors and supporters of camp.

We are delighted to be joining the CampWenonah family for what promises to bean outstanding summer and cannot waitto have you join us to experience themagic of camp in 2013! Thank you onbehalf of the Camp Advisory Committee &Leadership Team. WELCOME TO STEWY’S CENTRE!

LL ongtime Co-Director Mike “Stewy” Stewart retired from fulltimework at Wenonah early in 2012 to join the staff team at the AMICICamping Charity in Toronto. Stewy has been pivotal to the successof Wenonah over the past decade and we wanted to find a way toproperly recognize his many accomplishments and contributionsto life at Wenonah.

During our Opening Camp Weekend in late April 2012, the formerTickle Trunk at Driftwood was redesigned and rechristened as ourInformation Technology Centre (the new home of digital photographyand the Happy Camper newspaper). As a surprise to Stewy (and awell-deserved acknowledgement of his commitment to theWenonah experience) it was announced that this new programspace would be known simply as “Stewy’s Centre.”

TWO NEW MAJOR STAFF RECOGNITION AWARDS ANNOUNCED IN 2012

II n 2012, we unveiled two new staff recognition awardswith the first recipients for each being announced in lateAugust 2012.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

On the final day each year of August Camp, the staff remainat Camp after the campers, POLARIS and WCITs depart inthe morning. There is a full afternoon of work around the site(including taking down Leadership Village). The eveningfeatures a terrific buffet dinner from Chef Brad and his staff andthen, finally, a formal program to recognize contributions toWenonah and to look back on the season. In 2012, Jeff devoted the final part of the evening to make the announcement about a major new staff recognition, theWenonah Distinguished Service Award, and to honour thefirst two recipients. Here is an excerpt from Jeff’s remarksthat night:

Tonight, I’m pleased to announce a new award at Wenonah. It will be known as the Wenonah Distinguished ServiceAward. This is not just any acknowledgement. It’s our Hall

of Fame. Andtonight we havetwo inauguralrecipients. Wewill have a newplaque hanginghere in theLodge. Whilethere will nodoubt be othernames addedover the years, the first two

names are without questionthose that should be first whenwe speak of contributions toour Camp experience atWenonah.

One has been the inspirationbehind Camp from the very beginning and has providedthe foundation upon whichWenonah has been built. Theother has turned countlessdreams into realities and canbe credited with defining ourexperience in many remarkable ways.

They are the last two peoplethat would seek out the limelight or require any recognition. Satisfaction forthem has always been seeing others grow and developthrough the experience we provide.

It is quite simply a fact. Without both of them, there is noCamp Wenonah. Our collective experience would not haveoccurred nor been able to evolve in so many powerful ways.

They have always stood beside me. They have kept megoing. In turn, this has allowed me to focus on leadingCamp over the many years since Wenonah was founded.

And so tonight, on behalf of hundreds of Camp staff, thousands of campers and their families and tens of thousands Outdoor Centre and Womens Weekend participants, please join me in not just congratulating butthanking the first two recipients of the Wenonah Distinguished Service Award.

Wenonah Co-Director Renata Bradshaw and Associate Director Simon Wells were named the inaugural recipients of the Wenonah Distinguished Service Award.

SERVICE WITHOUT RECOGNITION

We are fortunate to have a special bond withLord and Lady Somers Camp in Australia. Wehave, over several years, welcomed both campersand staff from Somers and, in turn, a number offamiliar Wenonah faces have made their way toSomers (just south of Melbourne).

At Somers, the experience is framed by the simpleidea of “service without recognition.” Thethought that unselfish service defines the experience resonated at Wenonah. Joseph Taylor,a Somers alumni (and staff member at Wenonahduring the 2010 and 2011 seasons) was in touchwith Jeff reflecting on these simple ideals. Josephis now a commercial pilot with Cathay Pacificbased in Hong Kong. Joseph carries with him always the concept of “service without recognition”and sees the merits of this concept in everydaylife.

It was during an email correspondence withJoseph that Jeff was inspired to create a newaward to acknowledge those that maintain thevery essence of unselfish service at Wenonah.

A plaque hangs in the Lodge at Camp. It readssimply that the Service Without Recognitionaward is,

“Presented annually to a Wenonah staff memberthat best exhibits the high ideals of service.”

The inaugural recipient is Associate DirectorCaron Brick. Over the past 13 years, Caron hasnot only been the voice on the phone and provided the fastest response to every possible inquiry (!); she works tirelessly each and everyday so that every child that attends Wenonah canhave the very best experience. It is the smiles oneach camper’s face that brings Caron the greatestsatisfaction. We are forever thankful that she hasgraced our lives.

great many others through his example of dedicatedservice and commitment. Simon has also playedthe central role in evolving our Outdoor EducationCentre to a point where we now welcome thousandsof school children each year during Spring and Fall. And, Simon has been responsible for the ongoingdevelopment and maintenance of our site and facilities and has overseen significant expansionand enhancement over the years. Everywhere welook around Camp, we can see examples ofSimon’s vision and talents.

EMILY BREWEREmily puts a priority on doing the right thing. Sheputs great thought and effort into everything thatshe does. And, importantly, Emily is an outstandingrole model to her campers. It is clear from her interactions with them how much they look upto her.

Over her years as a camper, POLARIS, and WCITparticipant we have always known how good a person Emily is. That was only reinforced this pastsummer as a staff member. Emily is always a willingvolunteer to help wherever needed, and she goesout of her way to spend one-on-one time withcampers, especially those who may not get asmuch attention as others.

Emily is very conscientious. She is so aware of howher actions affect those around her. To Emily, doingthe right thing is more important than it is to impressher peers. She is upbeat no matter the role that sheis taking on. She always has a smile on her face, and her sensitive and kind approach to others hasan immeasurably positive impact on them. Emily isin the Bachelor of Kinesiology program at the University of British Columbia. She will return toWenonah in 2013 as a member of the staff team.

GRAHAM STEELEGraham goes about his role at Camp in a very quiet way. At the sametime, he is an immensely thoughtful and caring person. He has a veryclear understanding of what is expected of him as a staff member, and he works very hard to not only meet those expectations but tosurpass them.

Like so many of his peers, Graham has grown up at Camp. He wasa long time camper, and then POLARIS and WCIT participant beforeworking as a Resource Staff member this past summer. As a staffmember, he established himself as a great role model not only forother first year staff but also for all staff members.

Graham puts so much time and energy into everything he does. He is happy and enthusiastic to help out wherever and however hecan. He wants to do a good job, and is always receptive to feedback.Campers like him, no doubt in part because he constantly and genuinely engages them. Graham does not need to be recognizedfor a job well done because he is happy to see the reflection of hishard work in the smiles of his campers.

Graham will graduate from Upper Canada College in the spring. We are thrilled that he will return to the Camp Wenonah staff forthe 2013 season.

Early on during the start of Camp we learned that someone hadstolen the Olympic flame as it was on the journey from London to Rio de Janeiro. We met some very famous Olympians who were devastated with the news; on top of that we also met some Olympic Committee Officials who did not know what to do. Luckily, the WEEnonahcampers had many solutions!

We took some time to prepare, the campers learned about teamwork whenthey played the Statues Game, they learned about fair competition as theyraced marbles through a downhill course, and they learned the skill of concentration by carefully weaving in and out of a Streamer Laser Maze!

With all of these new skills under their belts the campers were ready for thenext full day of competition!

As Teams, WEEnonah campers took part in many sports events that included Tennis, Archery, Canoeing, Soccer, Beach Volleyball, Hurdling,Water Balloon Shot Put, and Gymnastics. “At the end of the day, they wereOh so tired,” but their efforts were rewarded when they saw the Olympianscanoeing towards Camp with a bright, blazing Olympic Torch! There was alot of cheering that led to a celebratory dinner.

WEEnonah 2012 brought out the best in all of the campers. At campfirescampers led songs and skits that everyone enjoyed! The boys and girlswere ecstatic at each Beach Party with a sprinkler car wash, and the everpopular Rivers and Dams. Each camper cooked his/her lunch on the campfireand loved it! On the very last evening the campers and staff really enjoyedwatching the slideshow of images that captured all the fun had over thatlast two days at Camp.

Wenonah staff members are so thankful to all of those that participated, wehad an AMAZING time and we hope you all did as well! We’ll see younext year!

WENONAH FOUNDATION

TThe Wenonah Foundation was established in the late 1990s to assist families with Camp fees. Funded completely throughthe generous donations of current families, alumni and many friends of Camp Wenonah, the Foundation provided financialsupport that allowed 32 children to attend Camp in 2012.

The mother of a child that attended Wenonah in 2012 wrote to us:

Please accept my most heartfelt thanks for the support offered through the Foundation to help our daughter attend Camp. She came back to me only wanting to return, having had the absolutely best time ever. And she came back again this yearchanged in beautiful, subtle and strong ways. Just glowing. She sat in the car and couldn't stop talking.... recounting almost each and every day and all the wonders of each and every person. Discoveries, forging bonds of friendship andunimagined accomplishments.... she experienced them all .... with much thanks to your wonderful staff, to you all and theFoundation supporters for making this opportunity possible. A privilege for which we are very grateful.

On behalf of all of the families that received assistance for their children to attend Wenonah during the 2012 season, wewould like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Wenonah Foundation donors:

IN THE WORDS OF WENONAH CAMPERSIN THE WORDS OF WENONAH CAMPERS

This past summer cabin groups were asked to reflect on their experiences at WenonahThis past summer cabin groups were asked to reflect on their experiences at Wenonahand to express what Camp means to them. Here are a few examples of whatand to express what Camp means to them. Here are a few examples of whatthey said:they said:

CC amp is a place of opportunity. A place to show responsibility and to meet new people. Camp acts as a secondhome where you can have fun and truly be yourself without worrying about an ego. At Camp one can developnew skills and learn new languages. A place where borders don't define you and different cultures are taught and accepted. Camp is a place where one can disconnect from the city and gain new perspectives on life and nature.Camp is a collection of reflections and memories which is within each member and is passed on to others.

CC amp is a time of peace and zen away form home. It means especiallyconnecting with the outdoors and getting away from technology. Camp givespeople a chance to come to a new place where all people can try new thingsand develop new skills. A part of Camp that means a lot to most of us is thevariety of people we meet from different countries. It is healthy to see theway their cultures relate to our own. As well as learning about others it is alsogood to learn about ourselves. Camp gives everybody a way to learn aboutthemselves in their own unique way.
