Not only has IFTM Top Resa succeeded in putting the spotlight on the importance that France’s senior political figures give to tourism; the show has also attracted a very impressive number of ministers from around the world. One such example is Malaysia, who are back at the show with their presence underpinned by a Ministerial visit (see our exclusive interview, page 12). This reinforced political presence is proof that tourism is increasingly important to governments from around the globe!
High level political visits to this year’s edition of IFTM Top Resa MAP Pro indicate increasing concern by the French government when it comes to taking tourism seriously. Today, Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Minister of State, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and the Minister for Overseas France, Annick Girardin visit the show, underlining the government’s strong backing of the sector. France’s hospitality sector for one is going from strength to strength, in the example of SEH United Hoteliers, now present in 15 countries (see exclusive interview, P10).

Tips From a Native Parisian
Saadia is a 28-year-old Paris “native”. Living in the 15th arrondissement and working in a top-end restaurant on the Champs Elysées, she knows some of the more “trendy” places to go in the French capital.
Around ten years ago, the Mama Shelter opened its doors in Paris’ 20th arrondissement. “It was like some kind of UFO, it was so different from anything we’d seen,” Saadia explains. We accompany her to Mama Restaurant, with its large rough tables, family-style dishes and its graffitied ceilings. The weather is beautiful so we head to the rooftop, awarded best rooftop in Paris by Vogue last June. “I love having lunch here, especially the Mezze-- the hummus or Espelette peppers, the guacamole and grissino, stracciatella, cherry tomatoes” Saadia shares.
Next we turn towards the Jardin des Plantes where we decide to enjoy the beautiful day by taking the Batobus, an economical way to take in Paris’ monuments along the Seine. We then head down to Saint-Germain-Des-Prés and arrive at the restaurant/bar Alcazar. “I love the atmosphere of this place, especially its flowery garden-style interior. I come here often and settle myself at the balcony bar and enjoy an exotic-fruit cocktail as if I were in the middle of the forest” Saadia tell us. We stay on the rive droite and push on towards Invalides before arriving at the spot Saadia chose for our dinner, the Bistrot de Maëlle et Augustin, an intimate place with a warm atmosphere. “Try the shrimp risotto or the fillet of sea bass with leek crust” Saadia proposes.

The Americas continued to experience growth in tourist arrivals during the first half of 2017 although the largest incoming destination, the United States, saw a contraction in international tourist movements.
According to the latest UNWTO tourism barometer, total arrivals to the Americas during the first half of 2017 were up by 3% with strong variation from one region to another. South America led growth with arrivals up by 6%. This performance is due to a recovery in regional outbound markets following years of economic stagnation. Double-digit growth was recorded for Uruguay (+27%), Colombia (+20%), Chile (+17%) and Paraguay (+12%). Central America recorded a jump in arrivals by 5% due essentially to dynamic marketing campaigns
from local NTOs while additional air capacity to Costa Rica and Panama boosted demand. Caribbean countries also attracted more travellers and showed a growth of 4%.
Finally, North America had the smallest growth, largely influenced by a decline in arrivals to the United States. USA inbound was down by 4% with sharp declines from Mexico, the Middle East and Latin America. However, Canada was up by 6% and Mexico by 12%
This winter, NYC & Company will be launching a major new campaign in France entitled, “New York City – Welcoming the World”. Already launched in some other regions, the campaign aims to counter the “à prioris” of a number of tourists about the welcome being offered to foreigners in the USA since the change of administration in Washington DC. “Given the geopolitical situation we are really pushing the message that highlights our diversity,” stated Christopher Heywood, Senior Vice President, Global Communications, for NYC & Company. “We oppose any impediment to international travel. We have been very vocal about trying to make sure New York is well positioned to welcome as many visitors as possible.”
The continued revitalisation of Lower Manhattan, including a new ferry system, and a massive new development project in Western Manhattan are among key points of interest being promoted by NYC & Company.
Reginald Charlot, Managing Director, Tourism Development, Mature Markets, explains that fam tours are still an important part of his organisation’s strategy: “We need to show the agents what’s new and different in New York so they can communicate that back to their clients. We also do product manager and marketing manager fams as well”

South America Stimulates Tourism in the Americas
New York City – Welcoming the World
Cet hiver, NYC & Company lancera une nouvelle campagne majeure en France intitulée “New York City - Welcome the World”.

“CALIFORNIA DREAMIN” AT IFTM TOP RESA Considered French travellers’ favourite US state, California made a splash during IFTM with a press conference presenting the coming trip of Miss France candidates to California. The event hosted Miss France organiser Sylvie Tellier in presence of Michel Monvoisin, CEO of Air Tahiti Nui and Murielle Nouchy, Director of Visit California. Another important event was also the launch by Alicia Aylies, Miss France 2017, of "California Star", a platform allowing the trade to better sell the destination.
