widespread damage, we have the ability to conduct search and rescue in an organized manner to account for folks, or recognize potential concerns. With that said, we feel like the neighborhood as a whole will be better equipped to handle a disaster than maybe six months ago.

How can you help? We need to compile a list of items you may have that we could use (with your assistance) if that disaster were to strike. For example, if you have a golf cart or a trailer that could be used to transport folks or supplies from one area to another. Do you have specialized training, such as nurse, physician, or such? If you could email Danny ([email protected]) in the ways you might could assist, it will make our team and neighborhood better prepared if something should happen. As you know, it is much better to have a plan and be proactive, than have to simply react after a disaster. Please consider the ways you may be of assistance should your neighbors need you, and respond accordingly; it will truly be appreciated.

I am proud to say our neighborhood is the first in the county to be designated with a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). This past summer eight of us took the necessary training to become certified as such, and those members are Jimmy Sessoms, David Cox, Jim Kirkland, Tom Mulroy, Joe Terranova, Jim Driscoll, Judy Driscoll, and Danny Cook. After the April tornadoes, several folks realized the problems felt by those living in Forest Acres could have just as easily hit The Oaks. Subsequently, we were able to secure the instructor and training required for the CERT. You may ask, what will the CERT do for us? In the event of a disaster that renders the neighborhood inaccessible by emergency responders, we have the ability to assist our neighbors with the basic needs. For example, if we were isolated because the roads were blocked with downed trees, or debris, and we have injured folks or gas lines that are damaged, we have the training to deal with those issues. If there is heavy and

This year our neighborhood is going to try something new for Halloween. Everyone is being encouraged to allow the neighborhood children to go trick or treating in The Oaks on Saturday, October 29. Halloween falls on a Monday, and according to the city, trick or treat night will be on the following Monday night. In light of the large number of trick or treaters in our neighborhood and for safety reasons, the board discussed having a night of trick or treating separate from the night set aside by the city. Our neighborhood children can safely navigate the streets with their parents that evening and not have to dodge hundreds of cars to do so. Neighbors can choose to have their lights on to welcome the children on one or both nights, but Saturday night, October 29 can be our own neighborhood children's night. So plan on having your light on with plenty of candy for our

children in The Oaks Saturday night, October 29!

Yeah! Cooler temperatures are soon to arrive. This summer sure has been a hot one, but fall is coming. I can tell by the shorter days that it will eventually be here. As we all know, the lack of rain and heat has created much stress on our trees, shrubs, and lawns. Sometimes, it was more than we could do to keep everything even watered with irrigation. With every fall, comes the messy time of leaves everywhere. Many times we have cleaned an area on a windy fall day and it looks almost the same as when we started. It can be very frustrating and disheartening to get all the leaves up. As a reminder, the city requests that when we gather loose debris from our yards, we place that debris behind the curb for pickup. Please do not place your leaves in the path of water flow along our curbs because it just washes into the storm drains and blocks the flow of the water out of the streets. Also, if at all possible, put limbs or heavy material on loose leaves or cover them with a tarp until picked up. This helps with keeping our streets cleaner and with the total removal of the leaves. Soon Greenstate will begin the process of bed edging, spraying herbicide, and mulching around all of our avenue street trees. We will be using pine straw mulch around the trees. If you have a different mulch and do not wish to have pine straw, please contact our office at 739-0405 and give our secretary your address, name and phone number. October also begins the process of changing out our annual color displays. We always look

forward to giving all of these areas a new fresh look.

THE OAKS COMMUNITIY FALL 2011

The Oaks housing market continues to be slow, but we have had some activity. Currently, there are five houses for sale in Oakridge and Amberdale. Lumber River is starting a new home in the Amberdale Subdivision and three new townhouses in Amberdale Village. The paving has been completed for the extension of Pin Oak Drive and the Amberdale Townhouse Section 3. Several lots were pre-sold and are now closed. Lot sales have also picked up for The Oaks.
