[Sue’s Musings]

First Presbyterian Church August 2014

Can you believe the summer is half gone? Before we know it, kids will be back in school, vacations will be over, and we’ll be back in the “normal” rhythm of our busy lives. For the church, that means our children and youth programs will gear up again, committees will be busier with more plans and programs, ministries that have taken a summer break will be up and going again. Did you know that none of these happen without volunteers? Especially now that we are without an associate pastor and director of children’s ministries, more than ever, we need you to step forward and help us make our ministries thrive!

I’ve had several people ask me how I’m doing now that Austin is gone. In other words, how is the workload now that we’re down to just one pastor? First, thank you for your concern! I do appreciate your care in seeing that I don’t take on more than I can handle, because, to be honest – I tend to do just that, and your asking reminds me to keep some balance in my own life. But in answer to the question, for the summer, I’m just fine! It will remain to see how my work and schedule will change in the fall.

Fortunately, we’ve already had some people step forward to help out with work Austin and Erika had been doing. They are taking seriously the “grow and serve” part of our mission statement! But this is an opportune time for all of us to ask – how can I serve at this time in the life of FPC? Right now, we can’t rely on staff to pick up all the pieces – so what can each of us do? If the children’s program is important

to you, how can you support it? If the youth program is important to you, how can you support that? Or our mission work – Austin used to do a LOT of behind the scenes stuff to facilitate our mission projects. Would you take on the mantle of some of that and help our mission endeavors thrive? Of course these aren’t the only areas where you can serve.

Some of you enjoy or are good at planning, looking at the big picture, creating, and such. Others are the kind of people who say “just tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” Others are up for short term projects. Whatever your availability, whatever your skills and interests, we’ve got a place for you! As you find your place to serve, your connection with the fellowship of the church deepens, the church is stronger, and … wait for it … it will speak well to potential pastoral candidates! Every pastor I know is drawn to and impressed by churches where the ministries are primarily member driven, and where significant numbers of members are involved in the ministries of the church.

So this is your opportunity to be a part of impressing your next pastor, even before you know who he or she is! But even if we weren’t looking for two pastors, as the German theologian Dietrich Bonheoffer said, “no one hears the call to be a Christian without also hearing a call to service.” Where is God calling you to serve?

Prayer for Chicago From the Chicago Youth

Mission Trip Team Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving us the

opportunity to serve you and your people in Chicago. Thank you for seeing us safely there and back and keeping us safe in a city that is riddled with violence and strife. Continue to use your followers, Lord, to show yourself to the people of Chicago. Be with the staff and children of By The Hand, help them to learn of you and to live their life through you. Help them combat the city wide public school graduation rate of less than 50%. Be with Vince and the men of Epworth, he is but one person trying to make a dent in the over

91,000 homeless in Chicago, he says he does not know you Lord, but we see your hands in his work and we know better. Be with Breaking Bread and let them continue to feed the hungry in a fashion that shows them they are your people and deserving of respect and a warm meal. Be with Amy Williams, Lord, as she continues to be your light in a city that at times is very dark. Lord, continue to guide the leadership at CSM, so they might help spread your word and your vision. Be with all the people of Chicago, let them make decisions with you in their hearts, that they may help heal a city that is broken. And lastly Lord, be with us, let us be your light in Salina, let us take what we learned and spread your love through our actions here at home. In your name we pray, Amen.

We’re looking for a few people who can help prepare and serve snacks on Wednesday afternoons for our Wed CE kiddos!! If you are available once a month or once a quarter, your help would be appreciated! To learn more or to volunteer, contact Sarah Payne at [email protected].

EducationYouth + Young Adult Ministry

If you want to get anywhere fast… Don’t take a train! By the grace of God the 2014 Mission Team arrived in Chicago Sunday night only 5 hours late! After a long journey through the city carrying our backpacks, suitcases and pillows, we finally arrived at our home for the next week on the campus of North Park University.

With the help of our CSM (Center for Student Mission) leaders Grace and Nikki, known to us as Truth, we explored the city and served many. Our 1st morning was spent on a prayer tour learning some of the difficulties Chicago faces concerning homelessness, gangs, gentrification, public schooling and poverty. We also learned about some of the missions at work in the city.

The following 4 mornings were spent with the children of By the Hand- Cabrini Green. By the Hand is a non- profit organization, with four locations in Chicago, that leads high risk students from kindergarten through college with a strong Christian base and emphasis on reading. These kids stole our hearts, we will remember them fondly in thought and prayer and they inspired us to look for opportunities to help kids in our own community.

Other organizations that we served were: Epworth Men`s Shelter, there we interacted with men who came for a warm meal and a place to sleep for the night; Breaking Bread, a restaurant style soup kitchen where we took the meal with men, woman, and children of the city. In both of these places we were humbled to find people from all walks of life can become down on their luck. Our thoughts and stereotypes were shattered by the people’s stories.

We also explored the city through many unique experiences of: Immersion where small groups explored different neighborhoods of the city seeking information about the people and customs of the area, as well as, trying to secure a meal for 5 with only $10 total; Neighborhood Plunge where we explored Albany Park, the neighborhood where we resided. It is a very diverse neighborhood with people from many nationalities and cultures.

While we served most of the week we were able to hit the beach one afternoon, enjoy a Cubs game which was quite miraculous because they won, and enjoy some traditional Chicago Style Pizza. We also enjoyed an awesome night of fun, fellowship and worship with other groups working in the city through CSM. We were honored to hear from Amy Williams, a “Hope Dealer” who lives and witnesses to gang members in the most dangerous and deadly neighborhood of Chicago, Humboldt Park.

In a week where we left prepared to serve and help others, they actually helped us. Teaching us that we need to see all people: rich, poor, clean, dirty, young, and old, as Jesus sees and loves them. In one week we couldn’t possibly help all the people of Chicago, but we could

First Presbyterian Church August 2014

learn from them how to help our community and bring it back to serve Salina.

We would like to thank everyone who supported and prayed for us on this journey. Please keep Chicago, the people of Chicago, the special people we met on our trip and our team in your prayers. Be looking for us in future missions here in Salina and sometime soon with a more in-depth description of our trip during worship … and maybe a song!

Sincerely The 2014 Chicago Mission Trip Team

August 5: Come and see Salina’s newest educational facility – Salina West. We are excited for Erika, Sophia and Isaac as they make their move to Sammamish, Washington to join Austin. We know the new opportunities they will find are in God’s plan. With sad hearts, we have to say a final goodbye, but we wish them all the best of luck in their travels and future endeavors.

who desire to earn a high school diploma. The Alternative Program offers smaller class sizes, tailored instruction, and personal attention to those who struggle in a traditional high school setting. The Salina West culture is built on personalization for its students, accomplished through the formation of strong, trusting relationships between staff, students, and parents. (Note: meet at 9:30 a.m. At 501 West Cloud. Park in the lot south of the building and enter through the west doors by the flagpole.)
