Oil Mill and Battery Factory…(from page 16)

The oil mill beganrunning in 2003. Peanutsare first cleaned and driedfor ensuring good qual-ity of the oil before beingcrushed. Crushed pea-nuts are bought bychicken, pig, cattle andfish breeders as animalfeed and they are said tobe more demanded thanpeanut oil.

The factory is sell-ing peanut oil for K 2,600per viss and crushed pea-nut for K 600 per viss.As peanut oil is reason-ably priced, consumers

prefer peanut oil to edibleoil.

Manager U HlaMyo of the oil mill said,"Consumers sometimesuse edible oil in summerand rainy season. But, theyuse peanut oil mostly incold season. There is aconstant demand for pea-nut oil in the township andwe don't even need to dis-tribute to other regions. And, we have enough sup-ply of raw materials, pea-nuts."

We then observedthe production process, and found that production

of scented peanut oil wasnot simple and easy as itseemed to be.

We also grasped anopportunity to visit TwoGolden Horses batteryfactory of Two GoldenHorses Industrial Co, Ltdin Kaungkha village in-dustrial zone, Mehan vil-lage-tract, Lashio.

The battery factorywith a capacity of 60,000batteries per day stands asa factory of import-sub-stitute goods. The capac-ity of each machine in-stalled is 200 batteries perminute with average pro-duction of about 2 mil-lions batteries per month .

The factory pro-duces R 20 and R6 sizeRed Monkey brand andDGH brand batteries. Thefactory is staffed with over100 workers includingdaily wage earners. Thefactory runs from 8:30 amto 5:30 pm daily exceptgazetteed holidays andSunday.

Manager U Hla Pyosaid "We believe in qual-ity and that's why we as-signed two QCs for ensur-ing that customers are al-ways supplied with qual-ity products."

The aims of the fac-tory are to save foreignexchange by manufactur-ing import-substitutegoods, development ofindustrial technology, creation of job opportuni-ties, to make contributionto development of the re-gion, to supply fair-priced

batteries to the public, andto increase the value ofGross National Products(GNP).

The constructionwork of the factory beganon 21, May, 2001 and thefactory started running on27, June, 2002. DGH bat-teries are distributed to thewhole country via Lashio,Mandalay and Yangonand are penetrating the

markets of border townsof India, Thailand andBangladesh.

Two GoldenHorses battery factory wasspecially designed andconstructed to be environ-mentally friendly one. Thefactory creates a goodworking environment forits workers, giving spe-cial attention to health andsafety of them.

Thus, oil mill andbattery factory of Lashiosupply quality refinedpeanut oil and batteriesto consumers at reason-able price and create jobopportunities for localpeople, thereby contrib-uting partly to develop-ment of the region.

STONY BROOK, 28 Oct—US scientists say they have discovered oceanacidification might be contributing to global shellfish declines.

Stony Brook University researchers said they’ve determined rela-tively minor increases in ocean acidity caused by elevated carbon di-oxide concentrations can impede the growth and survival of hard clams, bay scallops and Eastern oysters.

The scientists at the university’s school of marine and atmosphericsciences said their research is among the first studies looking at theeffect of ocean acidification on shellfish.

Professor Chris Gobler and doctoral candidate Stephanie Talmagesaid they showed the larval stages of the shellfish species are extremelysensitive to enhanced levels of carbon dioxide in seawater.

WHO chief foresees end of A/H1N1 flu pandemic HAVANA, 28 Oct—Visiting Director-General of the World Health Organization

(WHO) Margaret Chan said on Tuesday that the A/H1N1 pandemic would reach itsnatural end when enough people are immunized.

During a conference at the Tropical Medicine Institute Pedro Kouri in Havana,Chan said more vaccines against the A/H1N1 flu would be distributed in more than100 developing countries, including Cuba, in November.

Chan, who arrived in Cuba on 24 Oct, said vaccines against the flu were ready inless than six months because of international cooperation and the WHO’s call forworld solidarity. The WHO considered this pandemic “moderate,” despite the virushaving spread at an exceptional speed, she said, adding that “the causal agent hasnot mutated” and its resistance to antiviral drugs was “very low.” —Xinhua

EDMONTON, 28 Oct—Smoking one cigarette in-creases the stiffness of thearteries in those ages 18-30by 25 percent, researchersin Canada say.

Dr Stella Daskalo-poulou of McGill Univer-sity Health Centre in Mon-treal told the Canadian Car-diovascular Congress inEdmonton that arteries thatare stiff or rigid increase re-sistance in the blood ves-sels, making the heart work

harder — the stiffer the ar-tery, the greater the risk forheart disease orstroke.“Young adults ages20-24 years have the high-est smoking rate of all agegroups in Canada,”Daskalopoulou said. “Ourresults are significant be-cause they suggest thatsmoking just a few ciga-rettes a day impacts thehealth of the arteries.”

The study compared thearterial stiffness of young

smokers — five to six ciga-rettes a day — to non-smokers. Arterial measure-ments were taken in the ra-dial artery in the wrist, thecarotid artery in the neckand in the femoral artery inthe groin, at rest and afterexercise.

After exercise the arte-rial stiffness levels in non-smokers dropped by 3.6percent, but in smokers ar-terial stiffness increased by2.2 percent.—Internet

ST LOUIS, 28 Oct—USscientists say they’ve foundanti-epileptic drugs may beeffective in treatingneurodegenerative disor-ders such as Alzheimer’sand Parkinson’s diseases.

The researchers saidthey determined neurons inthe brain were protectedafter treatment with T-typecalcium-channel blockers, which are commonly usedto treat epilepsy. AssistantProfessor Jianxin Bao andcolleagues from the Wash-ington University Schoolof Medicine in St Louissaid they were one of thefirst teams to explore thepossible protective effectsof blockers for T-type cal-

cium channels. The mecha-nisms for neuro-protectionby anti-epileptic drugswere previously unknown.Bao’s team established cellculture models to directlytest whether the drugscould preserve neurons inlong- and short-term cul-tures in vitro.

They said they foundneurons showed an in-crease in viability aftertreatment with either L-type or T-type calciumchannel inhibitors. Further-more, they said their re-search suggests more thanone calcium-signalingmechanism exists to regu-late long- and short-termneuron survival.—Internet

SCIENCE DAILY, 27 Oct—Rogue waves—giantwaves that spring up suddenly and tower over theseas around them—have inspired physicists to lookfor an analogue in light. These high-intensity pulsescan cross large distances without losing information. Now a team of physicists have identified one set ofconditions that produces optical rogue waves. Theirfindings are reported in Physical Review A andhighlighted with in the October 19 issue of Physics.Rogue waves were thought to be a sailor's tall taleuntil an 85-foot wave broke over an oil platform inthe North Sea in 1995. Since then, scientists havetried to understand how such outsized waves arisefrom the erratic interactions of smaller waves on achoppy sea, with an eye toward creating them onpurpose in the form of light traveling in an opticalfiber.—Internet
