Organized by the Ministry of Culture, apaper reading session on ancient historicalevidence took place at the ministry in Nay PyiTaw on 25 September.

The main aim of holding the paper readingsession was to compile a paper on Myanmahistory. Finding out historical facts andevidence that have been lost in obscurity isfundamental.

Since 1950, archaeologists have beenconducting research on finding out morehistorical evidence from the excavated sites. Thanks to the research, there has been evidencethat humans had been living in Hanlin, theancient city of Pyu, up to the period of Pyucivilization in the late Stone Age.

Although an unearthed object seemsunimportant, it has reinforced the evidencethat the origin of Myanmar is Myanmar andit is the glory of the nation and its history.

Firmer evidence on Myanma history canbe recorded if more archaeological excavationsin different eras are made in ancient regions ofPyu civilization.

Paper reading sessions on ancient historicalevidence have been held in succession sinceJune 2008 and now it is the 11th time.Discussions and suggestions of resourcepersons and researchers will contributetowards the history of Myanmar.

By finding out evidence of human existencein different ages, Myanmar’s historical linkscan be recorded.

Toxic algae complaintspiling up in France

PARIS, 26 Sept —The prosecutor’s office is study-ing up to 300 complaints linked to noxious green al-gae after the death of a horse this summer on a beachin Brittany, a judicial official said on Friday.

Suspicions that tons of decaying green algae maybe behind illnesses, comas or deaths reported over morethan a decade gained credence with the death on July28 of the thoroughbred on a beach in Saint-Michel-en-Greve. The rider, who was walking the horse, passedout.

Former Environment Minister and lawyer CorinneLepage filed a complaint after the incident. Now, theprosecutor’s office has received legal complaints fromsome 300 people, said a judicial official. The officialwas not authorized to speak publicly on the issue andasked for anonymity.

ers.The brand of the

water pump said“Kubota”. Most of themachine parts installed ina water pump are pro-duced by Farm Machin-ery and Machine ToolsFactory No (1). Someworkers were found sys-tematically checking thequality of the pumps one

after another. An enginecan operate at full capac-ity only if each of its ma-chine parts meets thestandard.

KND5-B engine isa 5-hp device which canbe used with a two-inchdiameter pump, four-inchdiameter pump or high-power pump. The enginecan be used as a generator, and can also be used in

combination with some re-lated devices for otherpurposes. It consumesonly 0.25 gallon of dieselan hour, so it is economi-cal to use.

Assistant ManagerDaw Phyu Phyu Myint ofAssembly Shop (2) said,“Farmers can use theKNDF-5 water pump topump water into paddy

fields and to generate elec-tric power for lighting athome. It can also be usedfor firefighting, supply ofpotable water, and pump-ing water from tube-wells.”

Engines and waterpumps can be bought sepa-rately or set-wise. A four-inch diameter water pumpcan pump water as high as32 feet, a two-inch diam-eter water pump, 45 feet,

and a high-power waterpump, 90 feet.

Daw Phyu PhyuMyint said, “KND5-B 5-hp engine can pump 75gallons of water a minuteif we use a two-inch diam-eter pump. It can pumpabout 300 gallons of watera minute if we use a four-inch diameter pump. Andit can pump 300 gallons ofwater a minute as high as

90 feet, if we use a high-power pump.”

After an engine hasbeen assembled with apump, skilled workerscheck it at every stage tomake sure that it can run atfull capacity with full horsepower, and the engine andthe pump meet the stand-ard. The factory produces150 to 200 engines amonth.

The factory pro-duces about 400 four-inchdiameter pumps a month.It produces two-inch di-ameter pumps and high-power pumps according tothe orders.

We also visited As-sembly Shop (2) of FarmMachinery and MachineTools Factory No (1).There, we noticed two-inchdiameter pumps, each of

which is composed of 34parts. On average, it canproduce five units a day.At Assembly Shop (2),machines were painted anddried.

And we noticed thatthe section for 18-bladeharrow and three-bladepower harrows, the sectionfor middle-harrows, thesection for three-blade har-rows and the section for

two-inch diameter har-rows were full of com-pleted sets of machines. At every stage, machineswere checked thoroughlyfor quality control.

Water pumps forKND5-B engines areavailable at Farm Ma-chinery and MachineTools Factory No (1) (Ph:053 40026, 40028) inHsinte and the Ministry

of Industry-2 (067405323) in Nay Pyi Taw.

KND5-B waterpumps can be used inmany areas. So, everyfarmer wishing to pumpwater for agriculturalpurpose and get potablewater, and those in fireservices should get holdof KND5-B waterpumps.

'Green' roofs could help putlid on global warming

“Green” roofs, such as the one above, couldfight climate charge, scientists reports.

SCIENCE DAILY, 26Sept—“Green” roofs, those increasingly popu-lar urban rooftops coveredwith plants, could helpfight global warming, sci-entists in Michigan are re-porting. The scientists

found that replacing tradi-tional roofing materials inan urban area the size ofDetroit, with a populationof about one-million, withgreen would be equivalentto eliminating a year'sworth of carbon dioxide

emitted by 10,000 mid-sized SUVs and trucks.

Their study, thefirst of its kind to exam-ine the ability of greenroofs to sequester car-bon which may impactclimate change, is sched-uled for the Oct. 1 issueof ACS' E, a semi-monthly journal.

Kristin Getter andcolleagues point out in thenew study that green roofsare multi-functional.They reduce heating andair conditioning costs, forinstance, and retain anddetain stormwater. Re-searchers knew that greenroofs also absorb carbondioxide, a major green-house gas that contributesto global warming, but no-body had measured theimpact until now.

about all-round develop-ment of KyunhlaTownship, I met Chairmanof Township Peace andDevelopment Council UAye Naing and SecretaryDaw Khine Khine Myint tohave an interview with themat the office the nextmorning.

Kyunhla Town-ship, a mountainous region,stands between 500 and1500 feet above sea level.

At the western part of thetownship, Pyu mountainrange separated from theMiddle Yoma mountainrange stretches from northto south. The township hasforest reserves where teak, ironwood and otherhardwood trees are grown.

The chairman said,"Kyunhla Township issituated in the central partof Sagaing Division and itis in Shwebo District, 525miles north-west ofYangon. It has an area of

130.94 square miles. It ismade up of four wards, 33village-tracts and 112villages and has apopulation of over 85000.The significant chara-cteristic of the township ismineral and crude oilexploration. Myahnitregion in Kyunhla Town-ship is rich in Bentonite.Myanmar Oil and GasEnterprise of the Ministryof Energy produces 5000tons of Bentonite yearly. There are crude oilexplorations in Mawkel,Naungkauk and Yayshinregions."

Although KyunhlaTownship is not far fromThaphanseik Dam,farmlands of the townshipare located at the upperreaches of the dam. Thetownship, therefore, relieson the rain for the growingof beans and pulses. As theannual rainfall of thetownship is above 32inches, the farmers in the

township work the landunder the close supervisionof the Township PDC toget water for agriculturalpurpose by damming thecreek temporarily when therainwater entered the creek.

"Kyunhla Town-ship has one high school, three high schools (branch),two affiliated high schools, six middle schools, 12middle schools (branch),one affiliated middleschool, 83 primary schools, one primary school(branch) and two affiliatedprimary schools.

"In health sector, there are one 25-bedtownship's hospital, one 16-bed station hospital, 16 ruralhealth care centres (branch),one health care centre oftownship Maternal andChild Welfare Associationfor enabling local people toget health care services. With a view to broadeningthe horizons of local people, one Myawady retransmis-sion station and 111 self-reliant libraries have beenopened in the township,"the chairman added.

Then I made a fieldtrip to villages in thetownship to study thrivingmonsoon paddy, monsoongroundnut and monsoonC.P corn plantations.

In interviewing UKyaw Sein, chairman ofMagyi-inn village-tract andfarmer, about agriculturalsector of the village, heexplained, "most of local

farmers live in finebuildings as the village hasgood harvest. There arefive rice mills, one paddycombine harvester, twocorn combine harvester, eight power-tillers and 16pumps in the village-tract."

Next, the chairmantook me out of the village tosee plantations. I sawthriving monsoongroundnut plantations andcorn plantations.

"Most of arablelands in the township arefertile as they are alluvialsoil. The cultivation of cropsdoes well thanks to regularrainfall. The corn andmonsoon groundnutplantations that you seewere grown from seedswithout using chemicalfertilizer in Kason andNayon. The harvest timewill fall at the end ofTawthalin and waxing daysof Thadingyut. A basket ofcorn seeds is expected tofetch the minimum price of

Thriving paddy andcorn plantations and crudeoil production arecontributing towards all-round developments ofKyunhla Township.

WASHINGTON, 26 Sept —In a new research, scientists have claimed that thereis no “conclusive proof” that drinking alcohol in moderation benefits the heart.

According to the scientists, the views about cardio -protection from alcohol isby no means certain and probably has been over emphasised in recent years, thelatest edition of the ‘New Zealand Medical Journal’ reported.

“When viewed through the lens of two major early reviews in the 1980’s, thehealth giving properties of alcohol use becomes increasingly debateable,” leadauthor Prof Doug Sellman of Otago University said.

The scientists raise the issue of the influence of the alcohol industry in someof the studies reviewed in relation to the exaggeration of positive effects on theheart and health generally.

They also point out that there are many other health downsides from heavydrinking, and that alcohol is now widely recognised as New Zealand’s mostdangerous recreational drug.—Internet

Global networks key tomanufacturing success studyLONDON, 26 Sept—Manufacturers must embrace a

more collaborative global approach if they are to capi-talize on recent signs of economic recovery, accord-ing to a study released on Friday by the University ofEdinburgh Business School and business consultancyCapgemini.

The study said that the credit crunch has put manu-facturers under pressure, encouraging many to sub-contract work to international partners — dramaticallychanging the way companies do business. Links withglobal firms are now far more important than before.

The researchers say the world is witnessing a shiftin manufacturing from “doing” to “resourcing,” witha stronger focus on relationships with other compa-nies. Top manufacturers will adopt a “value circle”approach, in which they continually interact with aglobal network of suppliers and customers to developnew products.

Newer, more accurate, screening combined witha programme of humanpapilloma vaccinationcould eradicate cervicalcancer, a British re-searcher said.

Jack Cuzick of theWolfson Institute of Pre-ventive Medicine in Lon-don said new vaccinespromise to protect againstnine types of HPV, soeventually there will be noneed to screen womenwho have been vacci-nated.

“It’s important to sayup front that the HPV isresponsible for all cervixcancer,” Cuzick said in astatement. “If you caneradicate the virus, thecancer will not appear.”

Current HPV vaccinesprotect against two can-cer-causing strains of theHPV virus, but soon therewould be vaccines avail-able that protect againstnine types.

Doctors rethink natureof plaques

SAN FRANCISCO, 26 Sept—US doctors say the un-treated plaques causing unexpected heart attacks arenot mild lesions as previously thought.

The plaques are made up of fat, cholesterol, cal-cium and other substances found in the blood. Theplaques at high risk of causing an adverse cardiovas-cular event had large plaque burdens and/or small lu-men areas — clear space in the vessel.

These areas were invisible to the coronary angi-ogram but identifiable by intra-vessel ultra soundimaging, the researchers said. The areas with the high-est risk were those showing a necrotic core — area ofdead tissue — but without a visible cap of fibrous tis-sue — a thin cap fibroatheroma.—Internet

COPENHAGEN, 26 Sept—Higher levels of environ-mental chemicals in breastmilk are linked to a higherincidence of testicular can-cer, researchers in Den-mark found.

Konrad Krysiak-Baltynand colleagues in Den-mark, Finland and Ger-many measured levels of121 chemicals in 68 breastmilk samples from Den-mark and Finland to com-pare exposure of mothers

to environmental endo-crine disrupting chemicals.There is a worldwide in-crease in testicular cancer,but the cause remains un-known, Krysiak-Baltynsaid.

In some countries, suchas Denmark the prevalenceof this disease and othermale reproductive disor-ders is conspicuously high, while in Finland the inci-dence are markedly lower,

Krysiak-Baltyn said.“We were very sur-

A/H1N1 influenza death toll rises over3,900, says WHO

GENEVA, 26 Sept— About 3,917 people worldwide have been killed by the A/H1N1 influenza since the new flu virus was identified in April, the World HealthOrganization (WHO) said in a latest update on Friday.

Of all the deaths, 2,948 occurred in the Americas, followed by the West Pacificregion, with 362 deaths. The other four WHO regional offices, South-East Asia,Europe, East Mediterranean and Africa reported 340, 154, 72 and 41 deaths re-spectively.

The WHO, which declared the A/H1N1 flu as a pandemic in June, said the totalnumber of lab confirmed cases worldwide is now over318,925, but this case countis significantly lower than the actual number of cases that have occurred becausemore and more countries have stopped testing and reporting individual cases, particularly milder ones.

In the northern hemisphere, where winter is approaching, influenza activitycontinues to increase in many areas. But in the southern hemisphere, influenzatransmission has largely returned to baseline or is continuing to decline, the agencysaid. —Xinhua

BOSTON, 26 Sept—USresearchers have linkedexposure to tetrachlo-roethylene to birth defects.

The chemical, usedcommonly as a solvent, isalso known asperchlorethylene or PCE,and is sometimes found asa contaminant in drinkingwater.

The study, published inEnvironmental Health, found an increased risk of

oral clefts and neural tubedefects in children whosemothers — while pregnant— lived in eight towns inthe Cape Cod area of Mas-sachusetts where waterpipes lined with a vinylcoating containing PCEhad been used from 1969to 1983.

There were 61 childrenwith congenital anomaliesamong the 1,658 childrenwith some prenatal PCE

that the risk of certain con-genital anomalies is in-creased among the off-spring of women whowere exposed to PCE-con-taminated drinking wateraround the time of concep-tion,” study researcherAnn Aschengrau of Bos-ton University School ofPublic Health said in astatement. —Internet

LONDON, 26 Sept—Geological formationsunder the North Seacould store more than100 years’ worth ofemissions from Britishpower stations, energyofficials said.

The process, known ascarbon capture and stor-age, could reduce air-borne carbon dioxideemissions from fossil-fueled power plantsby up to 90 percent, EdMiliband, Britain’s min-

Without carbon cap-ture and storage, there isno solution to climatechange, he said.
