Varicose veins often misunderstoodATHERTON, 22 April—A US interventional radiolo-

gist says those with varicose vein disease are oftenmisdiagnosed. Dr Douglas Lewis, a board certified vas-cular and interventional radiologist in Atherton, Calif, says mistreating or ignoring of varicose veins can re-sult in needless suffering and complications becausepatients aren’t treated until the disease reaches a moredebilitating — and more difficult to treat — stage.

Lewis advises the sooner the disease is diagnosed, the simpler the treatments and the better the outcomes.“It is crucial to better educate physicians and to in-form the community about how to detect early stagevein disease and when to seek treatment,” Lewis saysin a statement.

Canadian scientists saylingering oil from the 1989Exxon Valdez spill is stillinflicting suffering onwildlife more than 20years after the disaster.Simon Fraser Universityresearchers in British Co-lumbia said they usedbiomarkers to reveal long-term exposure to oil inwildlife. They said theirfindings demonstrate howthe consequences of oilspills are measured in dec-ades, rather than years.

The Exxon Valdeztanker ran aground on thePrince William Sound inAlaska on 24 March, 1989,spilling 10.8 million gal-lons of crude oil into thesea, covering 1,300 squaremiles. It is still regarded asone of the most devastatinghuman-caused contamina-tion events in history.

The international teamof scientists, led by re-searcher Daniel Esler ofthe university’s Centre forWildlife Ecology, used thebiomarker CYP1A, whichis induced upon exposureto crude oil, to measureprolonged exposure to oilin local wildlifepopulations.—Internet

Tailored arthritis treatment onthe way with new test

LONDON, 22 April — A simple blood test could leadto a “new era” of tailored therapy for rheumatoidarthritis (RA), it was claimed on yesterday. Researchhas shown patients with certain immune system anti-bodies can respond to an advanced form of treatment.Eight out of 10 patients suffering from RA are be-lieved to have one of the two antibodies.

Trial results presented yesterday show they have agood chance of being helped by the drug rituximab, also known as MabThera. However, it may not beworth giving the drug to the 20pc of patients who testnegative.

Professor John Isaacs, from Newcastle University, who led the research, said: “This is an importantbreakthrough in the treatment of this chronic anddebilitating condition, heralding the beginning of anexciting new era for patients, physicians and the entireRA community.”—Internet

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatoryreturns first images

HOUSTON, 22 April —NASA’s Solar DynamicsObservatory has providedan astonishing new vistaon our turbulent star. Thefirst public release of im-ages from the satelliterecord huge explosionsand great loopingprominences of gas. Theobservatory’s super-fineresolution is expected tohelp scientists get a better

understanding of whatdrives solar activity.

Launched in Februaryon an Atlas rocket fromCape Canaveral, SDO isexpected to operate for atleast five years. Research-ers hope in this time to goa long way towards theireventual goal of being ableto forecast the effects ofthe Sun’s behaviour onEarth. Solar activity has a

profound influence on ourplanet. Huge eruptions ofcharged particles and theemission of intense radia-tion can disrupt satellite, communication andpower systems, and posea serious health risk to as-tronauts.

Scientists working onSDO say they are thrilledwith the quality of the datareceived so far. “When wesee these fantastic images, even hard-core solarphysicists like myself arestruck with awe, literally,”said Lika Guhathakurta, the SDO programme sci-entist at NASA Headquar-ters. SDO is equipped withthree instruments to inves-tigate the physics at workinside, on the surface andin the atmosphere of theSun.
