The Netherlands has an ecosystem of world class suppliers, knowledge
institutes and service providers. From design, architecture, car and
equipment manufacture through to innovative new technologies and
green smart mobility solutions.
The familiar multinationals like DAF Trucks, VDL, NXP Semiconductors, TomTom and
Ten Cate are supported by a large number of SMEs that actively design, test and
simulate automotive solutions. Our strengths lie in smart & green mobility solutions
and technologies, such as Electric Vehicle Technology, Energy Saving Technologies
and Connected and Cooperative Driving. There is a steady increase in the demand
for green mobility solutions, and thus lighter structures. Composites are the perfect
answer. The Netherlands is focusing on mouldable and recyclable thermoplastic
composites and thermoset polymers that are used in the automotive industry. The
whole chain (infrastructure) has been put in place for smart materials. Public-private
partnership is stimulated with schools and knowledge institutes providing the highest
level of education.

The Netherlands: a living lab for smart mobility solutions
Paving the way for electric mobility
The Netherlands is an international
testing ground for large-scale market
introduction of electric mobility with
clear goals for the roll-out of electric
vehicles:
200,000 electric vehicles by 2020 and
1,000,000 by 2025 with 100% zero-
emission public transport by 2025 (and
in the City of Eindhoven by 2020). Heavy
Duty Electric Vehicles (hybrids, battery
only and fuel cells) are to be introduced
very soon. The Netherlands also has a
full charging station infrastructure and will
install several hydrogen fuelling stations
in the coming years.
Smart Mobility solutions
The Netherlands leads the way
in Smart Mobility. The highly
developed and dense traffic network
in the Netherlands, perfect traffic
management and the 4G penetration
rate make the Netherlands ideally
suited for developing, testing
and implementing Smart Mobility
applications.
In the Netherlands the world’s first
shockwave reduction project, which
applies car2x communication in
‘normal’ traffic, was introduced on the
A58 highway that is equipped with
cooperative roadside units (WiFi-P).
Furthermore, WEpods (without steering
wheel or pedals) drive on a fixed route
between Ede and Wageningen from the
railway station to Wageningen University.

Areas of expertise: Materials
The demand for lighter and/or stronger
materials leads to different technology
solutions.
The Netherlands is strong in lightweight
components and materials as well as bio-
based materials, and is Europe’s leading
exponent of recyclability by re-use,
recycling and remanufacturing.
All our materials partners are specialists
with their own expertise in the
development of knowledge-intensive
innovations. In plastic and composite,
steel, aluminium and hybrid solutions
along with related manufacturing
systems.
Production technology
Automotive industrial companies and
knowledge institutes have significant
expertise and specialisation in
sustainable manufacturing, smart
manufacturing (i.e. digital and
virtual factories), high-performance
manufacturing & equipment and
new manufacturing systems that
generate smart products (i.e. additive
manufacturing).
DAF Trucks and VDL Nedcar in the south
of the Netherlands, which produces
the Mini, and Scania in the north of the
Netherlands have top quality, highly
automated production systems.
The Netherlands: Smart choice
The Netherlands can provide key enabling technology solutions for themes such as
smart mobility, energy savings and green transport. The Netherlands’ centuries-old
tradition of creativity, entrepreneurship, openness and willingness to collaborate has
proven to be the ideal breeding ground for the development of high-tech systems and
materials. These qualities make the Netherlands the perfect place to find solutions to
today’s social challenges. The Netherlands is known for its pragmatic mentality, smart
application of technologies, partnerships between industry, research institutes and
government, and flat organisational structure. It’s a great place to live and work.
Did you know…
The Dutch automotive sector employs 55,000 people, most of whom work in the
ancillary supply domain.
With over 90,000 EVs charged every day, the Netherlands operates one of the
world’s largest and most advanced charging infrastructures.
