Pen of the Principal

The fall season is off with a flash! In addition to the immense spirit sparked by Homecoming Week and our fast approach to the end of the first quarter, the 2014-2015 school year has been filled with conversation, reflection, and new learning. As a school, we have been exploring the word “Respect”. Through

announcements and conversations, our school community has been challenged to consider their definition of “Respect” and the meaning of “Mutual Respect”. Together we have remembered events such as 9/11, and celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner along with Constitution Day. Our next steps include engaging in conversation about what “Respect” looks and sounds like as we continue to focus on our school as a community. Learning is, of course, our primary focus. This is clear during the opportunities that I have had to visit classrooms school-wide. When I ask students about what they are studying, I am impressed with the connections they often make between the prior lesson, the day’s lesson, and what they need to do to meet the learning target. Whether they are sculpting clay, writing a business plan, creating an organizational structure that emulates the periodic table, or solving a problem, our students are applying what they learn in meaningful ways. Likewise, our teachers are actively engaging in professional learning focused on instruction. This is evident through their Professional Learning Community (PLC) work focused on meeting the academic and social emotional learning (SEL) needs of their students, as well as through their coursework on School Improvement Planning (SIP) days. To begin the school year, each teacher selected two areas of focus for the year from a catalog of 15 options including topics such as executive functioning skills, disciplinary literacy, and student engagement through questioning and discussion techniques. On each SIP Day they will continue to learn about this focus area and develop implementation plans for both topics. I am proud to serve the St. Charles North Community and look forward to continuing our partnership as we support all of our students to reach for the stars in and outside of the classroom. Mrs. Audra Christenson Principal

College & Career Readiness

Mr. John Peters, Assistant Principal

Seniors - Class of 2015

Naviance is your one-stop destination to find out information about college searches, transcript requests, college reps visiting North, scholarship information, and more. To access Naviance, follow the link in the top right corner of our home page, north.d303.org.

The scholarship file is updated weekly in the Guidance Office. There are approximately 100 local scholarships that our students can apply for. Our most current scholarship list is available on the SCN website (under College and Career/Scholarships) as well as on Naviance.

Counselors are currently meeting with seniors to encourage and answer questions regarding the college application process. As a reminder, ACT scores need to be sent to each college directly from ACT. The website is www.actstudent.org. In addition to requesting a transcript in Naviance, students need to complete a Transcript Request Form, available in the Guidance Office, and give to their counselor with $1 for each transcript requested.

On September 2, over 80 families of senior students attended the SCN college presentation, “Applying and Getting into the College of Your Dreams”. The presentation featured two college admissions representatives, Nate Barger from Illinois State University and Julie Nelson from Xavier University. The presentation covered how universities make their admissions decisions from the perspective of state versus private universities. The following is a summary of their advice:

o Spend time thinking about what you want and need in a college. o State and private schools make their admissions decisions in very different ways. Large

state universities rely more on GPA, ACT scores, and course load. Private universities put more weight on admissions essays and teacher recommendations.

o Apply early! Most universities have a priority deadline date of November 1. o Colleges understand that choosing a school is a family decision. However, this is the

student's admission application. Filling out the application and writing the essay is the student’s responsibility.

o Students need to continue to take rigorous courses, especially in math, science, and foreign language, to maximize their admissions chances.

o When writing the admissions essay, be sure to answer the essay question! o Contact your school counselor and/or the college admissions representative for tips and

advice on this complicated process.

The “Applying and Getting into the College of Your Dreams” presentation is the second in a three-part series which began in junior year with “Searching for the College of Your Dreams”. The third in the series, “Financial Aid 101”, will be held on Tuesday, January 6, in the Auditorium.

Juniors-Class of 2016

Please mark your calendars for “Searching for the University of Your Dreams” On Wednesday, November 5, in the Auditorium. This presentation is geared toward junior students and their parents who are beginning the college search process.

During the fall semester, counselors will be visiting junior students in their classroom to discuss the college search process. This visit will be followed up by an individual meeting with counselors in the spring. If you have questions/concerns about the college process, don’t hesitate to contact your counselor.

Juniors should take advantage of the college search feature in Naviance and take time to meet with the college reps who visit North during the lunch hours. Stop by the Guidance Office for more information.

Sophomores-Class of 2017

If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to join a club or sport and start thinking about volunteer work. Stop by the Student Life Office or see your counselor for information on how to get involved.

It’s never too early to get a head start on college preparation. When planning weekend trips or vacations near any university, take the time for a tour with your student. Visiting colleges exposes students to the campuses and gives them a tangible experience to inspire academic success.

Freshmen-Class of 2018

We hope the transition to high school has been a positive experience for your family!

Throughout the fall semester, counselors will be meeting with their freshmen students to check in on their adjustment to school.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are coming up on Monday, November 24.

Look for a mailing later this fall with instructions on how to make appointments with your students’ teachers or counselor.

COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS AND PROFESSIONAL EMAIL

This is an important announcement pertaining to the college application process and professional email! When completing the college application as well as communicating with college offices, students should use a personal email address, not the school Google email account. Currently, the school email accounts are blocking delivery of information from outside the District, including Naviance. The Office of College and Career Readiness recommends that students use a personal email account during the entire college application process. The counselors strongly encourage that

students create a “professional” email address. This address should be appropriate when reviewed by college admissions committees. Additionally, this email address will also be used when students pursue internships or employment in the future. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors should check the email address they currently have listed in Naviance Family Connection. If it is the school issued Google email address or an “unprofessional” address, it should be changed. Freshmen will have the opportunity to enter an appropriate email address later this semester during their Naviance orientation.

WRITING AND READING CENTER

The Writing and Reading Center opened Monday, September 14. The Center is open periods 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 and is housed in Room 104. Students at any grade level can get help on any reading and/or writing assignment from any class. Students do not need a pass to visit the center. Students who visit the center get a full period of one-on-one differentiated help. We also have computers so students can make instant revisions based on feedback. Students can come in as many days as they need throughout the school year. Students can also request to be paired with someone who has done the same assignment or who is older and has taken the same class. We develop one-on-one relationships with the teachers, too, so we are very familiar with all the reading and writing assignments in the school.

News from the Nurses’ Office We have more than 50 students at North High School who are diagnosed with life-threatening allergies. Although we cannot provide an allergen-free school setting, we hope to provide an environment where all students feel safe. Due to the potential for exposure to allergens, we are discouraging students from eating in the classrooms. In areas where students are eating in the classroom, we are encouraging them to use a barrier (paper towel, plate, lunch bag) on their desk, wash their hands before and after eating, and avoid sharing food items with others. Although the students’ food allergies vary, peanuts and tree nut allergies are the most prevalent and significant. If you or your child volunteer to provide a food item for an activity or event, I would encourage you to avoid bringing food items that contain peanuts or tree nuts. Please contact me if your child develops a health condition which impacts his/her education. Thank you for caring about the health and safety of all students. ART DEPARTMENT NEWS

The Art Department is proud to present the first AP 3D Art Studio class offered at North High school. We currently offer AP Studio Art 2D Design, AP Studio Art Photo/Digital Media, and now AP Studio Art 3D Design. The AP Studio Art 3D Design Art students had two required summer assignments. Pictured below is one of the assignments which was to design and construct a functional card board chair. Students used problem solving, critical thinking, spatial awareness, and engineering as they constructed their chairs. Additionally, AP Studio Art Photo/Digital Media is off to a great start. Each student also created two artworks and researched world class artists as part of their summer assignment. Pictured below are three samples of the amazing student work from these projects. We are also excited about our upcoming field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago which will engage students in a docent led tour of the art and an art making experience in the museum's education facility located in the Modern Wing. We are looking forward to another amazing year in AP Studio Art!

As many of you know, SCN is once again partnering with Midwest Heart Foundation’s Young Hearts for Life Program. This partnership provides each SCN student with the opportunity to receive a FREE ECG/EKG screening during the school day on Thursday, November 20. We participate in this program because a simple ECG can detect certain

serious heart conditions. Statistics from Midwest Heart Foundation (MHF) show that only about 2% of the students screened are recommended to follow-up with their primary

care physician (MHF does not receive these referrals) which allows families to make decisions on information that they might not otherwise receive. Students whose initial

screening suggests the need for more information will receive a repeat ECG/EKG and possibly an echocardiogram. Parents of these students will be contacted so questions can be answered and information shared. All other screening results will be emailed to the parent that registered the student for the screening within four weeks. (All screening results are confidential – MHF does not release any student information to the school.) If you have not yet registered your SCN student for the free screening, please visit the following website to do so (www.yh4l.org). The last day for on-line registration is Friday, November 7, so please register ASAP. If you have questions or would like to volunteer to assist with the screening on November 20, please contact Nicolina Giudice at 331-228-6260 or [email protected].

COPY OF THIS LETTER & PERMISSION FORM/WAIVER WAS INCLUDED IN THE SUMMER REGRISTRATION PACKET

May 21, 2014 Dear Parents, We are pleased to bring the Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) Cardiac Screening Program to St. Charles North High School on November 20, 2014. All students whose parents authorize them to be tested will be screened. Please be aware that repeat ECG testing is recommended every two years. YH4L provides free cardiac screenings which include an ECG (electrocardiogram) and may include a screening ECHO (echocardiogram) to identify high school students at risk for sudden cardiac death and to increase the public's awareness of this issue. To date over 100,000 students have been screened as a result of YH4L. A simple ECG, when used to screen physically active young persons can detect certain serious heart conditions. Recording the electrical activity of the heart using electrodes attached to the skin with a mild adhesive, can detect approximately 60% of the abnormalities or “markers” from these heart conditions that are associated with sudden cardiac death that a stethoscope cannot. Please note that ECG screenings result in approximately 2% of the tests being falsely positive. This may require additional evaluation and testing by your physician. We believe that the benefit of this potentially life-saving screening outweighs this concern. We encourage you to discuss this screening with your child. Your child’s participation in the screening is your decision. We want to assure you that students’ confidentiality, privacy and individual modesty will be respected throughout all aspects of the program. Only female technicians will test girls and they will be screened in an area separate from boys. Enclosed you will find a permission form that will allow your son or daughter to be tested. We prefer that you complete this registration process on line. On-line registration is now available. If you do not have access to a computer, please return the permission form to the school. The Young Hearts For Life® Cardiac Screening is being sponsored this year by St. Charles North High School. For more information about this program, please visit our website at www.yh4l.org. If you have questions, please contact us at 630-785-4366. Sincerely,

VOLLEYBALL TEAM BRINGS ATTENTION TO PEDIATRIC AWARENESS

Many people are unaware that September is the national month of Pediatric Awareness, and gold is the color that represents this great cause. I, too, had no idea this even existed; I had only ever heard of pink being the color that represented Breast Cancer Awareness in the month of October. I recently learned from a fellow North family that more attention needs to be called to pediatric cancer, so I decided to do something. With the help from local Cal’s All-Star Angels Foundation and Stacey Sutter, the North Girls’ Volleyball Program was able to honor the work Cal’s Angels has done for this community and bring attention to a very important issue that often times is overlooked. Stacey and Tom Sutter founded Cal’s Angels in 2007, after their son Cal died at age 13 from Leukemia. Since then, Cal’s Angels has raised over two million dollars, which they have allocated to five Chicagoland area hospitals such as Lurie Children’s, Rush, Advocate Children’s of Oak Lawn and Park Ridge, and Central DuPage, helping to improve their cancer wards. Cal’s Angels has also become somewhat of a “wish foundation”, helping to grant the wishes of pediatric patients from these hospitals and provide financial assistance. With such a wonderful local organization right in our backyard and family members of the foundation within our school community, the Girls’ Volleyball Program was more than happy to join the cause! On Thursday, September 4, the entire Girls’ Volleyball Program donned gold apparel throughout the day to bring attention to the match that night, and sported gold socks and headbands during the game. Through our play, we paid homage to those children who have been diagnosed, those that have survived, and those that have passed on, as well as their family members. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to watch my volleyball program use their volleyball talents for good. We are striving to make a difference in our community, one day at a time, and we are honored to join forces with wonderful organizations such as Cal’s Angels to shine the light on an issue that hits so close to home. Soon, the volleyball program will be delivering stuffed animals, made by the players themselves at Build-a-Bear, to the children at Central DuPage Hospital. We hope to continue to raise awareness about pediatric cancer, and give back to an organization who has taught us so much about appreciating what we have been given. We hope you, too, will join us in this fight. Mrs. Lindsey Hawkins Girls’ Volleyball Coach

PTO Directory and Membership We have had some questions about getting a PTO Directory. If you are a PTO member and didn’t pick up your directory at Back-to-School Night, you have the following options:

You or your student can stop by the Main Office and request one. You can attend our next PTO meeting on Monday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the LRC to pick one up.

If you are not a PTO member, you can still become one by requesting membership through the school (we have waived dues for those in the Free Lunch Program) or paying:

Online for NHS-PTO at https://d303.revtrack.net/tek9.asp?pg=products@grp=120 (OR) Send a check made out to SCN PTO for $20 to:

SCN PTO 255 Red Gate Road St. Charles, IL 60175

If you are unsure if you are a PTO member, you can check the sheet that your student received at Materials Pick-Up day, call the school treasurer, or email the SCN PTO at: [email protected] Don’t forget you have to sign-up for the SCN PTO mailing list separately from becoming a member (if you did this at registration, you have already received emails from us) at: http://scnhs-pto.webs.com/emailsform.htm.
