New Exhibit—Through the Eyes of STEM: The History of the Future
Special Opening Reception: Thursday, March 1, 2018
Join us at the Carnegie Museum on Thursday, March 1, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. for the opening of our newest exhibit: Through the Eyes of STEM: The History of the Future.
This exhibit, created in conjunction with Crawfordsville Middle School, is funded in part by a Quantum Leap grant from the Indiana Humanities. The exhibit features local medical pioneers and innovators as well as scientists and researchers with connections to Montgomery County. It highlights past, present and future leaps forward and encourages discussion of how we got to where we are today.
The section of the exhibit exploring the past, the primary focus of the CMS students, honors early innovators and pioneers such as Martha Hutchings Griffith, one of the first female doctors in Montgomery County, who not only pioneered procedures to better assist women and children, but was socially and politically active. Also highlighted is Andrew J. Moyer, an Indiana native and Wabash College graduate. Moyer was a microbiologist who was responsible for the development of techniques for the mass production of penicillin that saved potentially millions of lives during World War II. Also included in the exhibit is a display on the evolution of local hospitals prior to and after desegregation, care provided, and equipment used to treat patients.
The section of the exhibit exploring the present and future includes “Synthetic Biology” which introduces patrons to gene splicing, genetic engineering and the future of food. This portion of the exhibit also highlights the current and future uses of 3-D printing in medicine, research, and adaptive technology.
At 7:00 p.m., immediately following the opening reception will be the Annual Meeting of the Membership of the Friends of the Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County. Museum members will hear details about the museum’s activities in 2017 and vote on the 2018 slate of board members. All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The Carnegie Museum is wheelchair and stroller accessible and admission is free. Regular visiting hours are Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The logo for this year’s exhibit
was designed by CMS student
Lorelei Schmitzer-Torbert.

2017 Annual Report The Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County had another busy, successful year in 2017. We welcomed a record-breaking 6,509 visitors, our highest annual attendance so far, and hosted many exciting programs, exhibits, and events. Best of all, we celebrated our 10-year anniversary with a full week of activities and are eagerly looking forward to our next decade in the community.
Our popular Pi Days (one afternoon each for math and physics) and Brain Day events in conjunction with Wabash College once again drew large crowds to the museum, as did the Robotics & Programming Exhibition. Our fall Robotics Day, featuring demonstrations from the Crawfordsville and North Montgomery high school robotics teams, along with our Solar Eclipse Viewing Party were both rousing successes (even with the weather not cooperating for the eclipse!), while our Maker Day and Spring Break Science programs brought numerous families to the museum for hands-on demonstrations. Adults got their own evenings of fun when we hosted two sessions of our popular Geeks Who Drink Trivia Nights.
This summer also brought some new events to the museum, such as Open Mic Night, Carnegie & Canvas, and A Night of Dance, while our popular summer programming kept kids busy with Museum Camp, Spanish Camp, and our ninth annual Summer at the Museum. We wrapped up the year with our highly popular Photos with Santa event.
Several exhibits were also on display during 2017. Our main exhibit, Schools & Schooling in Montgomery County, was showcased all year long, and it was joined by Montgomery County Fire Fighters in the summer, Sugar Creek Quilting Challenge in the early fall, and the Crawfordsville Schools Art Extravaganza in the late fall.
In addition to all of this, the Carnegie Museum welcomed many elementary school field trips, scout groups, local organizations and community group meetings, as well as visitors from all over the United States and the world. It was a great year for us, and we can’t wait to do it all again in 2018!
ASTC Passport Program!
The Carnegie Museum will once again be a participant in the Association of Science & Technology Centers (ASTC) Passport Program in 2018. As part of this program, our members are able to gain free admission to more than 300 participating science centers and museums around the world (outside a 90-mile radius around Crawfordsville and your residence). You can download a list of participating programs at the ASTC website: astc.org/passport/
Remember to take your membership card with you when you visit these centers; proof of membership and personal identification is required to take advantage of the program.

The Carnegie Museum welcomed 6,509 visitors to the museum in
2017 with our exhibits, programming and events. After ten years, we
are still going strong … and can’t wait to see what 2018 brings!

Thank you for being a Friend!
In honor of the 200th anniversary of
Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, the
Carnegie Museum has been awarded two
grants from Indiana Humanities to help
us give our community a greater
appreciation of this classic work. The
goal of the Indiana Humanities’ One
State / One Story: Frankenstein program is
for people of all ages around the state to
have opportunities to read, think, and
talk about the book with other curious
Hoosiers. We are excited for this
opportunity because it’s the perfect fit
for our 2018 exhibit — the book
explores the complex personal, ethical and social questions raised by the
advancements in science and technology.
The Carnegie Museum has 50 copies of Frankenstein available
to share with those who would like to participate in our
Community Read. Please join us as we explore the novel,
the movies, and a variety of fun, interesting and thought-
provoking programs and activities.
