RELEASE FROM COUNCILLOR MARGARET WILSONAs a councillor part of my remit is to conserve andimprove Midlothian’s environment . I am supportingthe natural environment of Penicuik to encouragepeople to walk, cycle or run in a safe and enjoyablearea.I care a great deal about the area in Valleyfield whichhas as part of its natural beauty, a thriving duck pond. This pond is not only there to be enjoyed by youngand old for it’s wildlife diversity, it exists to help ourlocal schools in their educational pursuits. Thanks tothe Local Ranger (Alan) and also the the Officers inLand Services at Midlothian Council for their time andknowledge in helping care for this area. The pond hasreally thrived with 40 ducks and many moremoorhens, coots and 1 solitary Canadian goose. Wealso have newts, frogs, water beetles and numerouswet land plants. The pond needs a lot of care andattention to stop it stagnating and to ensure aconstant flow of fresh water reaching it. I havedecided to help in this important work by channelling

some of my environmental fund intoimprovements in this area.I will give you all a preview of proposed projects Ihave set up with officers and the Rangers.Valleyfield Pond1 0m boardwalk adjacent to pond edge and smallpath.New drainage to improve seating and picnic area. From Pond to Mill LadeCreate wildlife area on grass banking adjacent topath.Woodland Path Above Main Walkway Nature TrailNew steps to be placed there and sections ofboardwalk to improve access.Eskbridge/Harpers BraeNew field gate and posts and timber fence atentrance.Eskbridge Car Park to Harpers BraeNew planting with native trees and shrubs.

PENICUIK & DISTRICT BRANCH SNPAt the Branch meeting held in the Navaar Hotel onTuesday 1 1 th October 201 1 Convener Joe Wallacewelcomed those present. He went on to tellmembers that there had seen a substantial increasein the Branch membership since the fantasticelection victory in May. What is more pleasing is thefact that a lot of those joining have done so in recentmonths. This would show that they are happy with

the performance of the SNP Government tosuch an extent that they have been moved to join theParty. In his capacity as Convener of Midlothian LiaisonCommittee Joe told members that should the SNPtake control of Midlothian Council next May therewill be hard challenges ahead. Most of this could bebrought about through Labour’s use of the flawedand discredited Public Finance Initiative to build 8new schools in Midlothian. The GMB union through the use of the Freedom ofInformationAct discovered that South AyrshireCouncil has been left with a £400 million debt to agroup of private companies after being forced toborrow cash to build 5 new schools. New figuresshow the debt amassed by South Ayrshire Council isso large that the local authority will have to spend £1million a month for the next 30 years to pay back thedeficit.Last month it emerged that Scots will pay for schoolsand hospitals funded by the controversial PublicFinance Initiative for more than a century. Contractsfor projects such as Edinburgh Royal Infirmary andHairmyres Hospital at East Kilbride have “hitched”taxpayers to paying land leases to firms for 1 30years.

All the evidence now coming to light shows

that the present Scottish Government has beenshown to be correct in ceasing the use of PFI as a wayto fund projects.Councillor Margaret Wilson gave a report on behalfof the SNP Group on Midlothian Council. She went onto tell members “ We all want Penicuik, Midlothiansbiggest town, to be a warm and welcoming place forresidents and visitors. I have used my budget to re-vamp an area of John Street that has suffered muchneglect over the years. At one time this area hadmany flower beds filled with roses, but sadly nowthey are empty and full of rubbish. Many people passby this area and I hope they will enjoy the newplanters filled with seasonal flowers and the newtrees when they are in bloom. New kerb stones havebeen laid and new covering for the area in which the

planters sit. I hope this brings back some civicpride to the town as not enough has been done toclean up and reinvigorate certain main areas in ourtown. I will do all I can to reverse this trend”.Margaret advised that she has asked for a trafficreport on the busy junction at the bottom ofQueensway and Tesco store. The right turn into

Tesco is a nightmare for drivers and also the rightturn from the bottom of Queensway onto the mainroad is difficult. Margaret has requested a filter atthe lights at Tesco to ease this right turn and also atthe bottom of Queensway. This is long overdue.
