COUNCILLOR REPORT - MARGARET WILSONThis is my last report as a councillor for ward 1 .Penicuik. This ward stretches fromHowgate,Leadburn, Silverburn , Ninemileburn,Loanstone  to Mauricewood in Penicuik. A very bigarea to be representing, but it has been a realprivilage to work for you all.   I cannot tell you howmuch I have enjoyed the experience ,learning moreevery day about the area and the people ,I

represented. I will miss the busy life I have had for 5

years and sometimes wonder what I will do with allmy free time. However it is time to retire as I am  inmy 65th year and I want to spend time with myhusband ,family and friends. This year 201 2 will see 1 2 SNP candidates standing in6 wards across Midlothian. To go into administrationin the council we need to have 1 0 successfulcandidates. I hope all 1 2 make it and change things inMidlothian council for the better. I have been inopposition for the last 5 years and it SO hard tochange things when you are the oppositioncouncillors. Change is good, it brings new and freshpeople to work on your behalf. Labour have been incharge in Midlothian for as long as I can remember, let us have a new regime at the helm of local politics.

PENICUIK AND DISTRICT SNPSpeaking to Branch members who attended a meetthe candidates meeting in the Navaar House HotelCandidate and Branch Converer Joe Wallaceexplained to those present that it is important thatvoters are aware that they can vote for both the SNPcandidates in the forthcoming Council election. If a voter is voting SNP in Penicuik Ward 1 atStrathesk Primary School, Cuiken Primary School andYMCA/YWCA Queensway it is Joe Wallace 1 DerekRosie 2 and if voter is voting at the North Kirk andCornbank it is Derek Rosie 1 Joe Wallace 2.In Midlothian West Ward 4 at Mauricewood Primaryand Glencorse Primary it is Andrew Coventry 1 OwenThompson 2It will be SNP 1 and 2 you can vote for bothcandidates.

Joe went on to assure members that Derek and hewould carry on the tremendous work of CouncillorMargaret Wilson in working hard for Penicuik. Headded that not only the Branch but the people ofPenicuik owe a deep sense of gratitude to Margaret. She has taken up problems on behalf of manyresidents and through determination, tenacity andnot taking no for an answer got things done.Derek Rosie echoed Joe’s sentiments and said it wasgood that Margaret has told them both that she willbe there to give Andrew, Joe and him help andadvice.

The Branch have issued a survey throughout Penicuikand District and the returns exceed the figures wehave received in previous surveys by a substantial

amount. As we expected the main issues of concern are thefuture of our High Schools and the Town Centre. Themajority of people who responded stated that theywould like more consultation before a decision ismade and would prefer that the two schools remain.Andrew Coventry said I realise how importantexcellent educational opportunities are in enablingindividuals to fulfil their potential in life. I work ineducation helping young people and people of all

ages to move forward with their aspirations which ina time of rapidly changing technology which ischanging daily the way people live and work we haveto ensure that the people of Penicuik have access toexcellent educational opportunities.

Derek Rosie is a member of the BusinessImprovement District Committee, this is a way inwhich local businesses can help improve their owntrading environments. The aim is to get businessowners locally to form a steering group that helpsidentify projects and services. What is clear that ifBIDS is to succeed then it requires significant supportfrom the local council. Councillor Margaret Wilsonwho also attends BIDS meetings has beenattempting to get the Council to allow the site ofJackson Street School to be used as a car park, hopefully with a change in administration atMidlothian Council there will be a more sympatheticear.

Car Parking in the centre of Penicuik is a barrier toimproving the footfall, shoppers require more than90 minutes, especially if visiting the Health Centre,Dentist or a hairdresser then want to meet friends

Convenor Joe Wallace spoke of the Labouradministrations use of the disastrous PFI (PrivateFinance Initiative) for new builds throughoutMidlothian then boast that “they” have provided youwith modern facilities. They never tell you the truecosts of these contracts, for example StratheskPrimary School cost 6.7 million to build but over thelife of the contract it will cost £25 million. By the endof the contract the building will not be fit forpurpose and by committing you to debts now theyare restricting growth in the future. Children that arepresently attending these schools will still be payingfor them when their children go to school, that is ifthey are still fit for purpose.

Joe concluded by thanking all those members whohave helped in the campaign so far and those whohave committed to help in the coming weeks.

For further information on the Branch or the SNPplease contact Andrew on 664904

This play examines socialcircumstance at the time of the rise of Thatcher.Britain had high unemployment, strikes, enforcedpoverty, issues in Europe, PUNK, fuel costs andnational security worries in the middle east.Ring any bells? As an active theatre company we are seeking toextend our following and appeal by producing plays, shows and musical productions to suit audiences andparticipants expectations alike. We welcome allmembers of the community to come and participateor support the shows as the audience. FromPantomime every December to One, Two and Threeact Plays and Musicals there will always be anopportunity for you to be involved. We appreciate that not everyone can do everythingor wants to be involved with everything we produceso there is no all year commitment required, unlessyou want to of course. And our productions alwaysneed a crew backstage, costumes, props, scenerylighting and sound.

We have great knowledge and are enthusiastic inkeeping live theatre in Penicuik and reach a wideaudience throughout the year. As a consequence weare able to offer some competitive advertising andsponsorship opportunities to the local communitybusinesses which help keep us running through outthe year. We appreciate the support we havereceived from the local businesses this year.

Next Year sees the rebirth of the Musical (in August201 3 )for which we will require a vocal chorus andlead singers. Meetings for organising this will takeplace in late April and early May after the currentproduction is well under way in its rehearsal. If youwould like to be involved in this production e-mail uson our marketing e-mail address to be kept informedof developments with this production.

Angel Card of the Month ~ Archangel Chamuel

Chamuel comes forth this month to help you findlove in your life. This love may be of an externalsource, such as a love for a job, relationship or place, but more than likely this will be to find a love ofyourself. So many of us look outwards to findhappiness, to find love, when what we really need isto find love for ourselves. If you asked yourself howmuch you loved you, what would be the answer?

Many of us forget to find that inner love for who weare, we believe that the answers will be found in thethings around us, when really the love that we yearnfor, is the love within ourselves. Chamuel will helpus this month to find that love, to help us begin to

love the person that we are, the body that weare in, to love the life that welead. Open your heart toChamuel and he will leadyou inside of your heart, toconnect with this love thatwe all have, within our ownself.

suggest events and activities for the coming yearthat YOU would like to see happening.

Making Space Penicuik (MSP) is still going strong:Jenni and Ania now meet for crafting sessions inroom 2 at West Street Art Centre on Fridaysafternoons ~1 2:30 – 3:00 pm. Other folks of all agesare welcome. They ask you to check on the MSPCommunity page to confirm that it’s going aheadthat particular week, as occasionally they can’t makeit(https://www.facebook.com/pages/Making-Space-Penicuik/1 828371 71 730809).Otherwise, you are welcome to join MSP’s drop in'crafting in the community' sessions at 1 2:00 noon onSaturdays at the PCDT coffee morning in the TownHall.

The Committee have started to plan this year’sPenicuik and District Arts Festival, and before longwe’ll be posting details of the annual Art Exhibitionand Turner Prize competition. Because we seem tohave so many gifted photographers in Penicuik, thisyear we will also run a separate PhotographyExhibition, with a new “Christie Prize” for the best

entry. Watch this space for more details! It’ll also be worth looking out for details of ourannual mid-summer party. This will be a good excuseto come and blether with old and new friends, eatand drink, entertain or be entertained, and of course, enjoy the glorious summer!

The committee are also busy applying for grants tomake some further improvements to our premises atWest Street. A project close to our hearts is toprovide a stair lift. It’s very hard to get funds foranything these days, but we’re doing our best, andwe’re very glad to have Jo Buckley on our committee, who is experienced and pro-active with grantapplications. Other grant applications are beingmade to refurbish the back windows, to make repairsto guttering, to replace the chairs for events, and toreplace the stair carpets. Let’s hope that at leastsome of these dreams are realised! The work we havealready achieved over the last few years has greatlyimproved our events venue.

As I write (April) , Tony McKale’s CommunityEducation class are exhibiting their work in the cafégallery. It’s a really good show, so I hope you
