Stewardship 2015By Helen Campbell, Director of Stewardship and Planned Giving
This year’s Stewardship Steering Committee — Nancy and Ralph Hubbard, Julie and Andy McCall, and Rieta and Ben Reiser — is hard at work preparing for our Every Member Canvass. Brochures and letters have been mailed to the parish and Stewardship Minutes are being prepared for the Sunday services.
The Vestry and Associate Vestry have already started to lead the way by making their 2015 pledges.
Stewardship is our most important ministry, and perhaps the most misunderstood. Some people think it is all about money. Others think it means only time, talent and treasure. Some wonder if it is just another word for fundraising or tithing. In reality, “stewardship” is the word that describes our entire relationship with God. God loved and trusted us so much that he made us his stewards. Our challenge is to strive to be good stewards by:
• Recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God.
• Taking time to be grateful for the gifts that God has given us.
• Realizing that God gives each of us all we need, plus enough to share.
• Turning to the Holy Spirit for guidance in sharing our gifts as God intended.
Over the coming weeks, you will hear from our clergy and from your fellow parishioners. You will learn that stewardship is the main work of the church. Our worship, our volunteering, our praying, and our giving within the church provide the support that we need to engage in the often difficult and lonely tasks of proclaiming the good news, loving our neighbors, and striving for justice and peace, both within ourselves and in the greater world.
Stewardship is our thankful response to God’s graciousness to us. Stewardship is an adventure. It is an invitation to offer our gifts. It is a challenge to refocus our lives by designing our budgets toward sacrificial giving.
Help the Stewardship Committee work toward a successful Every Member Canvass; one in which we reach out to our fellow parishioners, increase our circle of relationships and joyfully “build up the body of Christ” at St. James Episcopal Church.

Nursery HoursInfants and toddlers are welcome at all services, but may also be lovingly cared for by trained staff in our nursery on the first floor of the Parish Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday mornings, and for other events as announced.
The arrangements on the altar are given to the glory of God.Parlor arrangements on October 5 are by Joanne Anderson; on October 12 by Barbara
Bearden; Nancy Bogan on October 19; and, on October 26 by Peggy Brandes.
Our new youth director, Marvin McLennon, who assumed the program after working with Mary Claire Ferachi before her departure to her Master’s program, is coming to the attention of those beyond our parish!
Beyond his work at St. James and with Kid’s Orchestra, the Diocese of Louisiana is happy to welcome Marvin as the new Diocesan Youth Minister. Marvin will coordinate diocesan youth events under the supervision of Canon John Kellogg.
Marvin was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and attended Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas where he received his degree in Communications. During his summers as an undergrad, he served as a camp counselor and media coordinator at the Episcopal camp, Camp Mitchell, which he claims as his “second home.”
The St. James EYC group meets every Sunday from 5:00-6:30 p.m. If you would like to contact Marvin for more information, you can reach him at [email protected]

October at the CSF:• People of faith have been making
pilgrimages for countless centuries. Members of our community will recount their recent experiences, with a focus of why the particular sites they visited have been important to Christianity. Prior John Pitzer will relate his story of walking in the footsteps of St. James in Spain, along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, Sunday, October 5.
• Ed Henderson, retired chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at LSU, will share Letters to My Children, theological lessons he may have shared in his classes, but not with them, such as “why evolution does not conflict with creation,” and “why the Trinity may be a mystery but is the most reasonable and intelligible understanding of God” on Sundays, October 12 & 19.
• An introduction and explanation of All Saints Day, its history and traditions, will be held on Sunday, October 26.
All sessions are Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Coffee and cookies are available in the atrium. Come on over!

Stephen Ministry Announces WorkshopBy Allen Paterson
Stephen Ministry Intro-ductory Workshops are half-day events where you can:
• catch a vision for lay caring ministry;
• experience a sample of Stephen Min-ister training; and
• learn the basics about Stephen Minis-try—how it works, the benefits it of-fers, and how to bring Stephen Minis-try to your congregation.
You’ll come away with a clear understand-ing of the difference Stephen Ministry makes and a vision for getting it started in your congregation.
Attending one of these workshops is not mandatory for beginning Stephen Minis-try — but they are an excellent way to get your questions answered and learn what Stephen Ministry is all about.
Three Engaging Sessions
Workshops take place on Saturday, No-vember 1 with registration opening at 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. hosted by Stephen Ministry at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 8866 Goodwood Boulevard, in Pope Hall.
Each workshop has three sessions:
Session 1: Ministering to Those Experi-encing Grief
Session 2: An Introduction to Stephen Ministry
Session 3: How to Care in a Distinctively Christian Way
Who Should Attend?
Each participant receives an informative packet of materials. The fee for the work-shop is $15 per person or $50 for a group of four or more.
To register, call Stephen Ministries at 314-428-2600 or visit www.stephenministries.org/workshop. Checks should be made payable to Stephen Ministries; download a registration form, here, for mail-in regis-tration.
If you have further questions, please con-tact Allen Patterson, a St. James Stephen Minister, at 225-819-6041.
St. Mary’s Mom-to-Mom Ministry is a group of mothers who have children under the age of five, and who would like to gather once a month for prayers, friendship, and fellowship.
The group will begin meeting on the first Friday of each month, beginning Friday, October 5 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall parlor. Nursery care is provided. The group is reading A Modern Girls Guide to Bible Study by Jen Hatmaker. If you would like more information or to participate, please email Catherine Wilson or Mary Pesses.
The James Gang Will Hear About Some Real Oldies! The prehistoric Monumental Earthworks of Poverty Point, a State Historic Site and National Monument in Louisiana, is now recognized as one of the world’s most treasured cultural and historic sites, as the The World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO voted to inscribe it by consensus as a World Heritage Site this summer.
“Poverty Point is an extraordinary settlement built by an ancient hunter-gather society more than 3,000 years ago that deserves to be recognized as one of the world’s great archaeological sites,” said Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell .The site, which features an extensive collection of prehistoric earthworks constructed 3,100 to 3,700 years ago, tells the story of the early inhabitants of North America. Researchers believe the vast complex of structures, including an integrated complex of earthen mounds, enormous concentric ridges and a large plaza, might be the largest hunter-gatherer settlement that ever existed.
We will gather to hear George Riser, MD., longtime advocate for Poverty Point, followed by a box lunch in the gallery:
Tuesday, October 14 at 10:00 a.m. at The Louisiana State Archives, 3851 Essen Lane, just off I-12Please contact Mary Hunt Boutwell, Director of Lay Ministry, to reserve your spot and lunch for this most interesting day, or phone her at 225-387-5141. The cost for the program and lunch is $12 per person.
InvItes You to explore our lIfe and MInIstrIes Messenger
The
We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.
Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
Coming SoonIt’s been three years since our last overhaul of the St. James Episcopal Church web site, and it’s time for a major update! We will be implementing more mobile-friendly features and easier means for updates by individual ministries, tying in more closely with our Facebook and Google+ pages and Twitter account, and more! Please do not be alarmed to see our site down occasionally over the next few weeks. We will have an announcement page, letting you know of our progress, with temporary links to our most-requested areas: newsletter links, documents, calendar and online giving portal.
Ever wondered why some say racism still exits while others believe we live in a post-racial society? Would you like the opportunity to find out in a safe, non-political atmosphere where you can simply have a dialogue?
The Dialogue recognizes that racism is not an “us versus them” issue in communities. Racism is an institutional construct that was built into our political, social and economic systems by decades of practice, and much of it exists today unintentionally and indirectly. However, as long as racism exists, our institutions will tend to operate to the advantage of one race over another instead of providing full access for all equally. Where this happens, there are ongoing social problems such as unrest and poverty that never reach a solution.
If this peaks your interest, St. James is offering you that opportunity to join others on Wednesday evening from 6:30 - 8:00 for six consecutive evenings beginning October 1 and ending November 5. Each conversation will be led by a trained facilitator from Dialogue on Race Louisiana. There will be sign-up sheets at the coffee gathering after the 9:00 and 11:00 Eucharists this Sunday, September 21 and September 28. Space is limited, so please sign up soon, or call the church office for more information. Security provided.
