Celebrating Autumn with Apples By Aviva Yablok, Director of the Early Childhood Department, [email protected], Picures taken by Kindergarten Teachers
What could be better than a warm, beautiful fall day, a bus ride with friends, lots of laughter, a hay ride, apple picking and a
picnic lunch? It just doesn’t get better! That’s the way our three Kindergarten classes spent the day on a Thursday in September
between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
The students boarded the busses with lots of moms, dads, and teachers and took a ride to the Dr. Davies Farm in Congers,
NY. The students spent the day filling bags with fresh red apples to bring back to school. The apples (all 400 of them) were used to
make applesauce, apple pie, apple muffins and for just plain eating. The classes weighed them, graphed their favorite apples, and
measured themselves alongside the apples. It was a wonderful day and a great way to begin our school year. Our thanks to all the
parents who joined us for the trip. Make sure to look on ParentLocker for additional pictures from the trip!

Meet the Candidates: 7G Vice President By Messenger Staff
Candidates for 7G Vice President: Danna Rebibo, Sophie Samuels, Lily Snyder
Sophie: I admire Aly Raisman for being a
proud and courageous Jew, and standing up
for her/our people. She wanted to support
Israel even when other people didn’t want to.
She showed a real “Kiddush Hashem” at the
Olympics. She is truly a role model to me,
and (I hope) to a lot of other people too. Even
though the London Olympics 2012 didn’t get
the moment of silence for the Israelis in the
Munich games, I still think that she definitely
made her point!
Lily: I admire my dad because he is so sweet
and he works all day and all night just to sup-
port my family, and I also admire my mom

because I want to help people that have sug-
gestions or problems with something about
the school.
Danna: I admire Mrs. Leora Berko-
witz Sulimanoff and Morah Chasida
because they are so much fun and
have great personalities. And trust me-

she found out she had cancer two
years ago and instead of being down
and sad she was full of excitement

Meet the Candidates: 8G President By Messenger Staff
Candidates for 8G President: Lebe Adelman, Hannah Hudes, Lauren Kirshenbaum
Lebe: I admire my father, because he is
kind, works hard, and treats everyone with
respect. I want to be in student government
because I believe I can represent the voice
of the students, and help make MDS an
even better place.
Hannah: I admire Edmund Hillary and
Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. They were the
first two people to reach the top of Mt.
Everest. Personally, I don’t see myself
becoming a mountain climber. But the
fact that they just kept going, and push-
ing forward makes me tell myself that I
can do it too, whatever the challenge is,
small or large.
Lauren: I admire many people, but I want to
talk about the teachers who helped me. For
example, Morah Felecie, my kindergarten
teacher taught us both learning and games like
acting. I will cherish these memories forever.
I also want to be president because I have
many I ideas to help MDS grow and change.
Preparing for the General Election By Susan Kurnit, [email protected]
Every four years Americans vote for President on the
first Tuesday after a Monday in November. Since 1791, the
country has gradually become more democratic and has expand-
ed the electorate to include all United States citizens over 18.
Despite this only about 50% of Americans exercise their Consti-
tutional right to elect their next president. The 8th grade Social
Studies classes are actively involved in reading the issues at
stake in this election in order to present them to the school with
the solutions that are being offered by both candidates, Mitt
Romney and Barack Obama. They will be presenting these is-
sues to the school on Election Day and their fellow students will
cast their votes for the next President of the United States.

Life-Size Math By Dara Abrams, [email protected]
This week, first graders have been continuing their study of addition. We are currently focusing on different strategies we
can use in order to solve various kinds of addition problems.
To keep math time fun and exciting, our class has moved beyond the usual pen and paper math exercises. First grade math is
a way to get your whole body moving while creating an enjoyable learning environment.
We have been solving addition equations this week by using a LIFE SIZE number line! Students had the opportunity to
physically hop across our classroom number line in order to solve addition problems rather than using the usual pencil and paper.
First graders have also been using poster size 10 frames and extra large counters to model addition problems for their peers.
Come stop by our classroom during math time. You might just get a turn to roll our extra large die or take part in a game of
Pumpkin Patch Bingo!

Make Way for the Baby Chicks! By Aviva Yablok, [email protected]
The Chick Hatching project has begun in the
Early Childhood Department. Farmer Lynn arrived
yesterday with three dozen fertilized eggs. She also
brought a hen and chicken along (so we would know
where the eggs came from!). Farmer Lynn taught
each group of children how to properly care for our
precious eggs. We turn them each day while they sit
in their incubator and we keep the area safe and
warm. We expect them to hatch on Monday. That
will be quite an event for us, as our second floor
comes alive with baby chicks.
We cannot touch them for a day or so after
they hatch. At that point, we can handle them care-
fully, feed them, give them water, and watch them get
used to their new surrounding. Rest assured, there
will be lots of hand washing on the second floor.
The chick will go back to the farm at the end of next
week. We hope you can come visit our “nursery”
sometime next week. Our incubators are in Rooms
201, 203 and 208.

J.K. Rowling Webcast By Aviva Yablok, [email protected]
Last Thursday, Grade 5 students enjoyed
the opportunity to watch author J.K. Rowling dis-
cuss her Harry Potter book series, via Scotland,
through a webcast. Rowling discussed her modest
beginnings and the journey that she embarked on,
writing this incredibly popular series. She described
the ways she came up with characters and events in
the stories and inspired our students to write with
the same passion, creativity, and humor. Below,
enjoy some comments from our 5G Harry Potter
fans.
Hanna Gerber: My favorite part about
watching J.K. Rowling was when she read to us. I
really understood how she meant for us to read the
story. She read her book, The Sorcerer’s Stone,
with a lot of expression and enthusiasm. I could tell
that she was very proud of her work. My other
favorite part was when she explained why and how
she made up her characters. Rowling said that she
shares many character traits with the characters in
the stories. For example, Hermoine is smart and
intelligent, just like Rowling.
Liana Goldstein: My favorite part about watching J.K. Rowling was when she read to us from The Sorcerer’s Stone because
she explained certain parts to us in a way that only she knows, as the author. I also liked when she answered questions from students
in different schools because it allowed them to be connected to the books and her personal life.
Sheindel Berger: My favorite part of the J.K. Rowling webcast was when she described the characters. Hearing how she
created them and the way that they were like her was amazing. I also liked when she read the book out loud. Hearing it from the au-

Leading By Example: Rivka Abbe ‘09 Reprinted from YU Today
She was welcomed on Capitol Hill to speak her mind to government
leaders and has just launched her own weekly radio program. Perhaps most
extraordinary, Rivka Abbe is still in high school at the Samuel H. Wang YU
High School for Girls (YUHSG), known as “Central”.
Rivka Abbe, a junior, who graduated from Manhattan Day School,
launched her own radio show, “Teen Spirit with Rivka Abbe” (Tuesdays from 7
-8 p.m. EST) on The Nachum Segal Network. She hopes to use the weekly pro-
gram as a platform to address issues that concern teens and to influence her
listeners to become active in their communities and in the Jewish world.
On Sunday, October 14, the 17 year old from Manhattan’s Upper West
Side convened 250 of her peers—Jewish students from high schools across the
New York region—on Yeshiva University’s uptown Wilf campus to introduce
them to the mechanics of lawmaking, Israel advocacy and lobbying. The next
day, she led the group to Washington, D.C. to meet with members of congress
and discuss U.S. policy concerning Israel. Abbe was joined by MDS parent
Rabbi Seth Grauer, YUHSG’s assistant principal; Matthew Shwartz, Yeshiva
University’s assistant director of recruitment and high school programming;
and two members of YU’s Presidential Fellowship in University and Communi-
ty Leadership, Daniel Elefant and Ethan Wasserman.
The upcoming lobbying trip will be Abbe’s second. She developed the
program after founding C-PAC, Central’s Political Awareness Committee. It
was a response to “Israel Apartheid Week” programs on college campuses.
“When Jewish students who received 12 plus years of a Yeshiva edu-
cation cannot respond to these claims, and G-d forbid start to believe it them-
selves, we realize that we are creating a generation that is our own worst ene-
my,” said Abbe. “If our own people do not know the truth and cannot stand up
for it, then who will do so and how do we expect others to believe it?”
Led by a board of YUHSG students, C-PAC educates the student body
about Israel, Middle East politics and Jewish history, brings in outside speakers
and arranges the lobbying missions.
“Rivka has a true passion for Israel,” said principal C.B. Neugroschl, who called Abbe’s commitment to furthering aware-
ness of issues facing Israel, “inspiring for the entire school.”
This past summer Abbe held a six-week internship with NCSY’s associate director of education, Dovid Bashevkin. She used
the time to compile source material and do some writing of her own about Israeli history and current events that she hopes will engage
American teens about the significance of Israel and Jewish life.
“When I met her the first time I was so impressed that we immediately offered her an internship and all of our resources to
help plan her march on Washington to lobby for Israel with students of many high schools, coordinated with Yeshiva University,”
said NCSY’s Burg. “I’ve never met a teen with that level of drive to get things accomplished for the Jewish people.”
Welcome Back to Our First Full Week By Holly Tanz, [email protected]
Welcome back to our first full week! Here in Room 401, we are following our schedule,
maintaining our materials, sharing our thoughts throughout class discussions, and completing
homework. We have built our own pendulum in science class and observe what affects the speed at
which is goes back and forth. In math we are reading, writing and comparing whole and decimal
numbers. We are concentrating on writing complete sentences in a paragraph when presenting our
written ideas. In reading we are reinforcing comprehension skills such as the setting, character, and
sequence details. Let’s not forget about the election and meeting the candidates and the process of
the campaign and the debates. We are enjoying building our rain sticks in art, do you know how to
build a rain stick? Great sharing with you; here’s to a happy and healthy year for all!

Family Fun Days: Chocolate Works! By Lisa Staiman, Family Fun Days Chair
What happens when you put 50 kids in
a room with a vat of chocolate? Think Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory revisited--minus the
scheming of Willy Wonka and the drama of
Veruca Salt, of course. The kids all had a great
time learning about where chocolate comes
from and the process it takes to make it. It was
a real treat to see how much they enjoyed them-
selves.
The kids got to choose a mold and
learn how to drip the chocolate into the mold,
shaking the mold, and freezing it. Then they
got to taste the chocolate. They also had the
option of making another treat by picking either
a graham cracker, pretzel or oreo cookie and
having it run through the conveyor belt and
sprinkling them with their favorite sprinkles. Yummy! Another treat was they were given the opportunity to dip marshmallows into a
chocolate fountain--and eat them after they were covered.
Even after making all the chocolate, they were sent home with a goody bag too. The kids of all ages enjoyed themselves, and
even some adults got to make a chocolate treat!

Parsha Challenge: Noach Prepared by Rabbi Benjamin Yablok based on questions from Congregation Beth Aaron in Teaneck, New Jersey
1. (a) Why was Noach given that name (5 reasons)? (b) Why did Hashem (1) call Noach a tzadik “in his generations” (4 rea-
sons)? (2) use water to destroy Noach’s generation (2 reasons)? (3) give him the complicated task of building the ark (3 rea-
sons)? (Bereishit 6:9,14,17)
1. (a) (1) Men and animals rebelled against Adam after his sin – their rebellion “rested” at Noach’s birth; (2) water flooded Enosh’s
idolatrous generation – at Noach’s birth, the water “rested” (Bereishit Raba). (3) People sowed wheat, reaping thistles and thorns – at
Noach’s birth, they reaped what they had sown, “resting” from their toils; (4) Noach invented plowing tools, so people could rest
(Medrash Tanchuma). (5) Metushlach foresaw that Noach would “comfort” the world – Lemech publicly called him Menachem,
meaning, he will comfort us (Yalkut Shimoni). (b) (1) (i) Noach, righteous in his corrupt generation, would have been more righteous
in a moral one; (ii) Noach was righteous compared to his generation – in Avraham’s time, he would have been unimportant (Rashi).
(iii) Noach, spanning many generations, was righteous in all of them (Abarbanel). (iv) Each generation’s righteous are judged in their
own time and placed in each generation based on its needs (Sefer haParshiot). (2) Since the dor ha-mabul (i) – arrogant from
Hashem’s bounty, including plentiful water from rivers and springs – felt no need to pray for rain, He punished them with rain; (ii)
sinned by opening their ayin (eye) and forcibly taking everything they wanted after, He punished them with every water ayin
(fountain); 3) (i) The lengthy preparation allowed people to question why Noach was building it, giving them a chance to repent; (ii)
doing the difficult mitzvah of building the ark, despite the people’s opposition, spiritually elevated Noach; (iii) since each generation’s
tzadik first suffers for the generation’s sins, Hashem hid Noach and his family in the ark while the Malach haMavet destroyed every-
one else (Bereishit Raba).
2. Which animals (a) (1) came to Noach’s ark on their own? (2) did Noach have to capture? (3) Why? (b) (1) What character-
istic made an animal brought to the ark to be tahor (pure) (3 explanations)? (2) From where do we learn that one should avoid
speaking vulgar language? (3) Why does the Torah later use this “vulgar” word? (c) Berachot 40a says that a man may not eat
before feeding his animals – why did Hashem tell Noach to take food “for you and for them [the animals],” mentioning Noach
before the animals (3 reasons)? (d) Which 2 types of creatures not in the ark survived the mabul? (Bereishit 7:2-22)
2. (a) Each (1) Non-tahor (non-kosher) species; (2) of the 7 pairs of tahor (kosher) species; (3) 6 pairs of each tahor species, to be
slaughtered as korbanot, did not come on their own (Ramban). (b) (1) (i) Noach could bring as korbanot (Sforno). (ii) later deemed
kosher for Bnei Yisrael (Netziv). (2) To avoid the vulgar word “tamei” (impure), the Torah uses the longer “lo tehora” (not pure) to
describe non-kosher animals; (3) the Torah later uses the word tamei to teach halachot and describe korbanot – since the dor ha-mabul
routinely used ugly, repulsive language, Hashem showed, for the dor ha-mabul, the importance of expressing oneself in a refined
manner (Rokeach). (c) (1) While an owner, protecting his animals for his own benefit, must feed them first, these animals did not be-
long to Noach – his chesed of saving them entitled him to eat first; (2) Noach had to feed all the animals, with different feeding sched-
ules throughout the day and night – he would have been unable to eat at all if he had to feed them all first; (3) there was enough food
on the ark since it was blessed with a miracle – a righteous person has to eat first for a blessing to take effect, as Eliyahu haNavi did in
1 Melachim 17:12 (Oznayim laTorah). (d) (1) the fish, and (2) Og, who promised to be a slave of Noach’s offspring – Noach left a
plank outside the ark for Og to sit on and provided him food (Sanhedrin 108b).
3. (a) How long were the mei ha-mabul (floodwaters) on the earth? (b) Did they rain down on all of the earth? (c) Since the
mabul destroyed all vegetation, from where did the dove get the olive leaf that it brought back to the ark? (d) What was the
“ruach” that Hashem brought to stop the water (2 views)? (e) (1) After the mabul, where did Noach build an altar? (2) Who
else built altars there? (Bereishit 8:1,11,14,20)
3. (a) One solar year – 365 days – the water began on 17 MarCheshvan (7:11), and the earth dried on 27 MarCheshvan the following
year – the solar year was 11 days longer than 12 lunar months (Rashi). (b) No – not on Eretz Yisrael – the water that covered Eretz
Yisrael flowed in from Chutz laAretz; (c) Eretz Yisrael’s trees were not destroyed – the leaf came from Har haZeitim (Mount of Ol-
ives) (Ramban). (d) (1) After Hashem “remembered” Noach, He caused a ruach (spirit) of mercy to pass over the world (Bereishit
Raba). (2) It was the Spirit that hovered over the earth at Creation (1:2) – Hashem used it to re-create the world (Medrash Tanchuma
Yashan). (e) (1) On Har haMoriah; (2) (i) Adam, (ii) Kayin and Hevel, (iii) Avraham, (iv) Shlomo haMelech (Rambam -- Hilchot Beit
haBechirah 2:2).
4. (a) (1) Which 6 “mitzvot Bnei Noach” did Hashem command Adam? (2) Which 7th mitzvah did He command Noach after
the mabul? (b) (1) Why did Hashem use the rainbow as the sign to never again destroy humanity? (2) Which 2 generations
had no rainbows? (Bereishit 9:3-17)
4. (a) (1) (i) Dinim (to establish courts that enforce the other mitzvot) with bans on (ii) birchat Hashem (blasphemy), (iii) avoda zara
(idolatry), (iv) gilui arayot (immoral relations), (v) shefichat damim (murder), and (vi) gezel (robbery); (2) eiver min ha -chai (eating a
limb torn from a live animal), since pre-mabul, eating all meat was banned (Sanhedrin 56a-b). (b) (1) Rainbows resemble reverse
bows – Hashem will send no more “arrows” to the world to destroy all of mankind (Ramban). (2) In the generations of (i) Chizkiyahu
haMelech and (ii) Rebi Shimon bar Yochai, Bnei Yisrael were tzadikim gemurim (completely righteous) and did not need the rainbow
sign to protect the world from a mabul (Rashi).

Thank you to Lisa Staiman for planning our sold out Chol Hamoed Family Fun Day at Chocolate Works. You did a great job organizing, liaising with the store, and running
the event. A good time was had by all.
