Crowding Each Other Out

Not to mention the fact that I have now choked off all

sunlight from the shrubs and bushes below the canopies

of these aspiring giants. All the beautiful ornamentals

and flowering plants have no chance to thrive as they are

kept in a perpetual state of stunted growth.

Ok, Mr. Greenthumbs you are saying, what on

earth does this have to do with anything. I want to tell

you that overcrowding, crowding out, doesn’t just happen

in backyards by overzealous homeowners but I see it

happening in the lives of many of my friends here at Our

Savior’s. The issue isn’t trees, but activities and

commitments. I have noticed over the years as families

add more and more major activities and obligations to

their schedules other things begin to get crowded out.

For the sake of raising giants the beautiful ornamentals

and flowering shrubs never have a chance, and the giant

commitments themselves begin to look less healthy as

they suck joy, time and resources from our families.

Just like in landscaping a sense of balance and

moderation is key to a healthy outcome. I know all the

trees look nice, but how many do you really want in your

backyard? Do the kids have to be in soccer, karate,

basketball and chess club all at once? Have you spent so

much time tending the giants, those big substantial

obligations that you’ve forgotten the joy of having dinner

together, going to worship, making cookies for a friend

or reading a good book? Has your spiritual and

emotional wellbeing been choked off by your inability to

be honest with just how much these things require?

What kind of friendships have you been able to nurture?

What about your prayer life? How has nurturing these

giants in your life changed your values, your priorities

and who you say you are?

I’m all for activities and my family certainly has

its fair share as we navigate schedules as well as

highways getting from one game to the next; but that

being said, I’m doing myself no favors if I don’t

honestly assess the cost. It’s always a good time to look

for balance and sometimes it’s even good, if not

necessary to let some of the giants go. I think Jesus

would say, for those who have ears to hear. Amen!

Peace!

Luke 8.14

I remember when Kelly and I bought our first

house in Silverdale, Washington. The price was a bit

steep, at $106,000 but it was a brand new house in a nice

the house was complete and we were ready to move in. It

may sound strange but one of the most exciting things

about this new house was that it came with only a few

completely unlandscaped. Of course some of the

involved in plants, trees, shrubs and sod, not to mention

the design and installation of all the irrigation and the

tools it would require to keep everything looking good.

Homeownership is already expensive, but starting from

scratch can be absolutely devastating.

That being said, there was still a lot of

exhilaration with the constant trips to Lowes and Home

Depot to find just the right trees—the giants that would

define my yard--and some of my favorite memories are of

Kelly and I digging holes, filling them with peat moss and

securing them for all perpetuity into the ground. I planted

oak trees, maple trees, flowering cherries, blue spruce, and

pines. They all looked good as saplings, ready to take off

discover that in my excitement to add depth and variety to

my yard I had horribly overplanted. The red oak for

red maple that I planted about 5 feet away can likewise

reach 60 feet with a 40 foot spread and the blue spruce

that was somewhat between them can reach a height of 75

feet with a 20 foot spread.

I loved all these trees, truly, dearly, at the depths

of my horticultural heart; but I had committed the cardinal

sin of urban forestation—overcrowding. I didn’t mean to

do it, but my blind enthusiasm was going to have horrible

effects on my yard and on the health of my trees. The

Music Notes

On April 29th, Our Savior’s started a Sunday night

worship service. The intent was to provide an

opportunity for people who, for one reason or

another, cannot make a Sunday morning service.

The format is very streamlined: Praise music, led by

worship leader Phil Sillas, a message by Pastor Jeff

(different than the Sunday morning sermon) and

Communion.

I have been on staff at Our Savior’s Lutheran for

over 30 years. Every Sunday I stand up and lead

worship. It is something I love doing – that’s why

I’ve been doing it for so long. Although I am in

church each Sunday, I offered to run the Power Point

for the Sunday evening service, primarily because

my son is in youth group at the same time. As I have

been in this service each week, I find that it is a time

of worship, a time of learning and a time of

fellowship.

The “title” of the service is “Pause” and that is

exactly what this service provides. Phil Sillas is a

Please Join us Sunday Evenings at 7:00pm

talented and godly worship leader and he brings with

him some wonderful backup musicians. The music

is worshipful and puts me in a place where I am

ready to hear what God has to say to me in the

message. Pastor Jeff has been preaching on the

Gospel of Mark and just like Sunday mornings, I

always get encouragement and knowledge from the

message. After the message is the sharing of the

Lord’s Supper. A closing song and our time together

is over for another week.

I encourage you to check out this service sometime

when you can’t make Sunday morning, or, if you just

need a little “pause” before you start your busy

week. Also, if you have friends or acquaintances

who need a place to connect with God and with other

Christians, spread the word. Of course, you can also

invite them to either of our Sunday morning services.

“Inspired to Love, Encouraged to Think, Sent to

Serve” – “Pause” is another way that Our Savior’s is

serving our community.

In His Service

Youth and Children’s Page

by Bob Cooper - Director of Youth and Children’s Ministries

Dear Parents

Congratulations! You and your child have made it

through another school year!

As your child leaves school for their much

anticipated summer vacation I want to take this

opportunity to invite him/her to participate in one of

Our Savior’s youth groups. Besides being a lot of fun

for the kids there are many other developmental

benefits of participating in a faith based youth

program. Of all the organized activities young people

participate in, faith-based youth groups provide the

highest rates of personal and interpersonal growth

experiences, according to a new University of

Illinois study published in the September issue of

Developmental Psychology.

“Faith-based youth groups give young people

rich opportunities for identity development,

learning to regulate their emotions, and

developing positive relationships with peers and

meaningful connections with adults,”

The young people in the study rated faith-based

youth groups higher than sports, performance and

fine arts groups, academic clubs, service groups, and

community-oriented activities such as scouting for

personal and social growth experiences, said the

researcher.

46 percent of the young people in faith-based

groups reported “This activity improved my

relationship with my parents” versus 21 percent

of students in other activities.

As your child enters this new stage in their

development I encourage you to encourage and

support their involvement in the youth programs

available here at Our Savior’s.

Our middle school group meets Wednesday evenings

from 6:30pm-8:00pm and as of last day of school

any student entering grades 6-8 are welcome to join

us! Our high school group meets on Sunday evenings

from 7:00pm-8:30pm and any student entering

grades 9-12 are welcome. Both groups meet year

round.

The whole family is always welcome to join us for

worship on Sunday 8:30am, 10:30am, and 7:00pm as

well!

Thank you and feel free to call or e-mail me.

Happy Summer!

As we begin our vacation activities please give some

thought about how each of us can do more in

reaching out to those in our church family, who may

need some support, as well as those who are

considering joining our church family?

We will soon be welcoming new members and I am

in hopes that each of you will make a special effort

to let them know they are welcome. There will be

goodies served in the courtyard after each service on

the Sunday they become members. Please plan to

stay a few extra minutes and get to know them and

to let them know you!

In last month’s letter I mentioned we were exploring

the possibility of shirts and caps with our church

logo to be worn by those serving in our many

outreach programs. While we still want to have

something identifying us as members of Our

Savior’s our budget doesn’t allow us to order caps

and shirts at this time. Many of you already have

shirts from past events. You may remember the red

shirts we had for our parking lot sale, the black ones

from a youth money raising project, and even some

white polo shirts with our logo. If you have one of

these please wear it when you participate in future

events. If you have a shirt but you no longer plan to

use it we would be grateful if you would “re-give” it

to the church so they can be used in future events.

Please drop them off at the church office and I will

collect and keep them for future use.

The cards I mentioned last month have arrived. If

any of you would like some please let me know or

pick some up from the church office. Gay knows

where they are. They are small and easy to carry

around so you can be ready if someone asks about

your church home. Please have some with you

when you participate in an outreach activity. We

also plan to leave some at local hotels and motels so

they can be available for visitors to the area who

might want to attend a service.

More about our “Welcoming Team” in next month’s

newsletter. Please let me know if you have any

interest in this new program or if you think of

someone who would really be great at the job. I

promise that it will not take any more effort than it

does to serve communion or read the scriptures.

Thank you, for all of your support.

Blessings,

Billie Buffington, Evangelism

Hello friends,

Stewardship means “belonging to God" - all that

we are and all that we have comes from God. We

are grateful to God for it all, and responsible to

God for how we use it. There is a connection

between stewardship and spirituality: generous

giving as a spiritual discipline helps us to grow in

Christ. “Duty and delight” are both motivating

factors for giving - doing what we ought to do as

responsible church members, and making cheerful

sacrifices out of love for God. The overarching

theme of this course is, “This is good news!” The

biblical message of financial stewardship is:

• promising and encouraging;

• not (usually) guilt-inducing;

• a way of life;

• for many of us, it just may be the way to a

better life.

So many times I have found it difficult to give

away what I have, but has it really cost me

anything? And God never said to give it all away,

just a portion.

Peace and joy,

Steve Kos,

Stewardship

Dr. Mark Allan Powell wrote this summary of

financial Stewardship that I want to share

with you.

God’s Work is in the Details - Part 4 of 4

Over the last several months, I

have shared some thoughts and

examples of how God’s work

can be found in the details. I

have resisted loading the articles

with numbers; however, please

allow me, just this once, to

provide some numbers to ponder. There are 24

hours in a day and after making some assumptions

(see below), an “average” person could be said to

have 48 hours (or 2880 minutes) of “free time” a

week. Just one percent (1%) of that free time equals

28.8 minutes. For the purpose of this discussion

round the one-percent of free time to 30 minutes.

What could you do for the church with 30 minutes

per week? Below are some examples.

I wrote in the first article about the “kid’s bags” and

what a blessing they are to the families with small

children. I estimate (based on experience) that it

would take someone less than 20 minutes per week

to check on the bags, straighten them up, and make

sure each bag has the appropriate contents. Then

around Christmas and Easter, that person could pick

out new items for the bags and replenish them. Who

could do this task, you ask? How about a

grandparent that has grandkids in another state. Live

vicariously through the children we have in church.

How about a pre-teen/teen that needs service hours

or is thinking about going into preschool education at

college. How about a family with younger children

that wants to teach their children about service?

(Though with little ones involved it might be more

than 20 minutes.)

Billie Buffington wrote last month

about reaching out to our visitors.

It might only take 5 minutes before

or after a service to greet visitors.

If you have a family and a family

is visiting, extend a hand after the service to help

them negotiate the donut line and playground. We

all can extend ourselves just a little bit to make a

visitor welcome. While the church does send out

letters to our visitors, what kind of impact could you

have on someone if you volunteered to make a

simple phone call during the week following to say,

“We are glad you came.” How long does that take?

Five minutes? Who knows you may find that “sixth

degree of separation” that they went to the same

school you did or is originally from Iowa, just like

you!

Awhile back, I went on an “adventure” with some

friends that happen to go to Our Savior’s. I met a

new friend on that trip. What really struck me was

that she said she does not get to church as often as

she would like, because she no longer drives. How

much time would it take to drive to

someone’s house, pick him or her up,

and then take him or her home after

church? Might you meet a new

friend? (If you are in need of a ride,

contact the church office and they

may be able to help you make a connection.)

Many, many people at Our Savior’s expend more

than 30 minutes a week in service to Our Savior’s.

To them we owe a great deal of thanks. However,

there are several small things (details) that just about

anyone can do, that can have a real impact on OUR

CHURCH. In addition, once you start doing

something, it does not mean that you have to do it

forever, or every week. As a way to make the small

(and large) opportunities to serve more visible to our

church members, we will be inserting a link on our

“Resource” page of the website to “Opportunities to

Serve.” The page will provide a listing/description

of opportunities to serve along with someone to

contact if you are so touched to serve. To get this

started there is simply a listing of general items that

someone might consider. In many cases, carrying

out these opportunities to serve does not require

permission; you can JUST DO IT. You can also

refer to the Time and Talent Sheet on the Resource

page of the website.

If something touches your heart, you can contact the

church office, the Council Member associated with

that area, or talk to Pastor. If you have ideas or

questions and cannot figure out whom to talk to, I

would be happy to help get you to the right person. I

do know right now that the church can use a few

more money counters and persons willing to serve on

altar guild. Many hands make light work.

Sharon Guilliams

Time Assumptions: You get 8 hours a day sleep and get 2 hours

to get ready or wind down. You work/go to school 40 hours a

week and there is 2 hours a day getting there and back.

Dear Fellow Church Members,

WOW! I'm shocked that a

year has already passed

since taking on the

position of your Building

and Grounds Council rep.

I feel that we've kept up

fairly well with the

challenges presented us, such as the repair of a

couple of roof leaks and wrought iron fencing. We

moved the flagpole to an area where all the students

and parents can see our flag during opening

ceremonies and the Pledge of Allegiance. We

installed a new ceiling fan in Room 7 to keep the

kids cool during hot weather and did more planting

by the entrance. And, with many thanks to the

Fitzhugh's for their generous donation of time,

talent, and materials, we have repainted the Nursery

with a beautiful new mural. Please check it out if

you haven't yet seen it.

All in all I feel it's been a fairly productive year, due

in no small part to the volunteers that care so much

about keeping Our Savior's in great shape for

worship and education. If you have an interest in

helping, please drop a line to the Church office, or

myself personally at [email protected]. Thank you!

Social Concerns Ministry Team News

Welcome INN Breakfasts Our first two Saturdays at Welcome INN (Interfaith Needs Network) have been very successful. We have provided snack bags and morning coffee to 35-40 people each time. Those we serve have been a pleasure to meet. They have been polite and appreciative, and we have had many interesting conversations. Most of the folks are working poor (e.g. day laborers) and some suffer from medical disabilities. We invite you to become a part of this ministry either to shop for food, prepare food, assemble bags, or hand-out the food. We are excited to serve our community in this way and hope you will join us! Heidi Works, [email protected] or 361-5179, is our local coordinator. You can learn more about Welcome INN at www.welcomeinnoc.com. We prepare the bags on Friday afternoon and meet at the site at 7:45am. We are generally done by 8:30am.Our summer schedule is the following Saturday mornings: June 23, July 14, August 4, August 25, and September 15. Join us!

“I was hungry and you fed me.”

Our Savior’s raised just over $4,000 for this year’s campaign to end malaria. Well done! The total included Lenten offerings, Baskets for Bednets donations, and $350 in matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. 2015 is the target year for wiping out malaria. Many churches, secular organizations and governments have united behind this cause, and it is working. The drop in malaria deaths in just the last three years has been dramatic, and the 2015 goal is not only just around the corner but entirely doable. Thank you for your generosity!

Handbell Choir Concert Nets

$1,200 for FAM Thank you so much to Sharon Guilliams for her leadership in producing the first of,

hopefully, many handbell choir concerts in April. We were treated to a wonderful concert and FAM’s coffers are $1,200 richer as a result. When I delivered the proceeds to FAM at their new facility, it was evident that our gift would be well-used. The new facility is about one-third larger than the old and the shelves were looking pretty bare. FAM is overflowing with food during the holiday seasons but by this time of year food donations wane.

Our next food drive for FAM will be during Vacation Bible School and Camp. You can help out, too! Bring non-perishable food to the church during those weeks and we will deliver it.
