The Maze Runner Entire Novel Differentiated Instruction Directions: Read the four selections below. You are responsible for choosing one task, and completing that task. You should do so on a separate piece of paper (not the back of this handout). Since you are completing this activity for the end of the novel, I’m expecting your work on the task you choose to be very well done and thorough. Mastery Task Interpersonal Task One of the jobs many teachers don’t always enjoy is creating a test for the units they teach. Your task is to do just that: you are to create a test over the content of The Maze Runner. Your test should contain 10 multiple choice questions (with at least 4 answer choices each), 4 short answer questions, and 1 essay response question. In addition to the questions (and multiple choice options for questions of that type), you should also circle the letter of each correct answer, and create “scoring guides” for the short answer and essay response questions. We have spent a great deal of time getting to know the various characters in The Maze Runner. Your task is to write four different poems. Each of the poems should be about a different character in the novel. The poems must be at least 12 lines long (though any, or all of them, may be longer), and they should use a rhyme scheme. When creating your poems, you should think about character traits, important actions, and relationships with other characters. Use those aspects, and others, within the lines of your poem. Understanding Task Self-Expressive Task Within The Maze Runner, there are several different ideas and messages that come into play. Your task is to write an essay that states and explains what the theme of the novel might be. There are many possibilities for this, but be sure to remember that theme refers to the author’s message, or what the writer of the story or book wants you to think about regarding a bigger picture. Themes often have to do with ideas such as love, friendship, humanity, and other significant topics. Your essay should be at least 3 solid paragraphs long, thought it may be more, and it should state and support the theme you have come up with for the novel. Several websites across the internet have confirmed that The Maze Runner will be a Hollywood film production, and it is scheduled to be released in 2013. Your task is to make a movie poster for the upcoming film. Your movie poster should look interesting, and it should make people want to see the film. In addition to the picture(s) you draw for the poster, you should also have a “tag line” (a line or two to draw your audience in). Your poster should be colored (no black and white allowed). This time, you should only choose this option if you have at least some strong artistic abilities.

The Maze Runner Entire Novel

Differentiated Instruction

Directions: Read the four selections below. You are responsible for choosing one task, and

completing that task. You should do so on a separate piece of paper (not the back of this

handout). Since you are completing this activity for the end of the novel, I’m expecting your

work on the task you choose to be very well done and thorough.

Mastery Task Interpersonal Task

One of the jobs many teachers don’t always

enjoy is creating a test for the units they

teach. Your task is to do just that: you are to

create a test over the content of The Maze

Runner. Your test should contain 10 multiple

choice questions (with at least 4 answer

choices each), 4 short answer questions, and 1

essay response question. In addition to the

questions (and multiple choice options for

questions of that type), you should also circle

the letter of each correct answer, and create

“scoring guides” for the short answer and

essay response questions.

We have spent a great deal of time getting to

know the various characters in The Maze

Runner. Your task is to write four different

poems. Each of the poems should be about a

different character in the novel. The poems

must be at least 12 lines long (though any, or

all of them, may be longer), and they should

use a rhyme scheme. When creating your

poems, you should think about character

traits, important actions, and relationships

with other characters. Use those aspects, and

others, within the lines of your poem.

Understanding Task Self-Expressive Task

Within The Maze Runner, there are several

different ideas and messages that come into

play. Your task is to write an essay that states

and explains what the theme of the novel

might be. There are many possibilities for

this, but be sure to remember that theme

refers to the author’s message, or what the

writer of the story or book wants you to think

about regarding a bigger picture. Themes

often have to do with ideas such as love,

friendship, humanity, and other significant

topics. Your essay should be at least 3 solid

paragraphs long, thought it may be more, and

it should state and support the theme you

have come up with for the novel.

Several websites across the internet have

confirmed that The Maze Runner will be a

Hollywood film production, and it is

scheduled to be released in 2013. Your task is

to make a movie poster for the upcoming

film. Your movie poster should look

interesting, and it should make people want to

see the film. In addition to the picture(s) you

draw for the poster, you should also have a

“tag line” (a line or two to draw your

audience in). Your poster should be colored

(no black and white allowed). This time, you

should only choose this option if you have at

least some strong artistic abilities.
