Getting to Know Mr. Donarummo

As most of you know, this year we have a brand new principal: Mr. Donarummo. Prior to Mattlin, Mr. Donarummo was the Assistant Principal at JFK High School. When Mr. Donarummo first was walked into Mattlin, he felt at home and he expressed that it seemed like a welcoming place for students, providing many opportunities. I asked Mr. Donarummo what good qualities he has seen in the students at Mattlin. He replied, “The students are respectful, bright, and passionate about doing the right thing. There have been numerous accounts demonstrating acts of kindness.” I then asked him what changes he would like to see in the school. He said, “I would like to find

additional ways to highlight student and teacher work throughout the hallways and explore additional opportunities for kids during rec and ninth period.” Finally, I asked Mr. Donarummo the question, “If you had one wish for the students at Mattlin, what would that wish be?” Mr. Donarummo excitedly said, “I would look to see all students take advantage of all the opportunities during and after the school day. My hope would be that students apply 100% of effort for their courses of study, participate in numerous clubs, and get involved in athletics or interscholastic activities.” In additional to being the full time principal, Mr. Donarummo likes to spend time with his family and children. He also enjoys mountain biking and outdoor activities in his free time.

Tips for Juggling School Sports and Outside Sports Maybe you play on a school sports team, and you also play sports outside of school. You might have practice for school five times a week, and there’s no time for your town team, and you have to decide which one you’re going to go to. Don’t stress! Just follow these tips. (Results may vary.)

1.) Try to make an agreement with both coaches so they know you are dedicated. 2.) Be prepared if you have “back to back” school sports to town sports. Maybe you should have a change of clothes just in case. 3.) Have a calendar so you know which sports are on which day. 4.) Get homework done so you have time. 5.) If you have to go to a required school practice, go there, but ask to leave early to go to your next sport. That way you might not get marked absent. By Jack P. and Sam S.

Lock Down Tips On October 24 , Mattlin had a lockdown because of a robbery at Morton Village. At 12:45 pm, a man was demanding cash from a local business there. Because of this, we were alerted that there was a lockdown and teachers should immediately lock the doors and look in the hallways. After the lockdown, there was no harm

done and the robbery was finished. But during the lockdown, some students were acting like they were on a sugar high. They could not stop squirming around because apparently, this lockdown was very monotonous. They kept giggling, mov-ing, and talking, so they were not quiet. To prevent this from happening to you, try these tips.: Number 1, don’t look at your friends. If you do, they will make you laugh. Sooner or later, the whole class will be laughing. Number 2, always look at one spot and just stare at it. This will help you concentrate on that and only that. Number 3, always sit where you feel comfortable. This will help you sit for a long time without having the thought of changing your spot on the floor. Number 4, if you feel nervous, always try to focus on your breathing. For example, you can breathe in for four seconds, hold it in for six seconds, then breathe out for eight seconds. This is a proven fact that calms people down. By Josh I.

The Phone Policy Much discussion in Mattlin is about the phone policy. Some people agree that we shouldn’t be able to use our phones during school hours. Others say that we should be able to keep in touch with our parents. The school says that we can’t use cell phones from 1st period through 8th period, except during lunch. Some students have brought their phones to MAP and gotten into trouble. The school strictly states that you cannot take your phone out of your locker until after the 8th period bell. They also say that you are not allowed to use them in bathrooms and in the hallways in-between periods. The announcements said, “Any student caught using a cell phone … will be reported to administration and face disciplinary consequences.”

I personally think that we should be able to use our phones during lunch and be able to contact whomever we need to. Most of us understand that we are not allowed to use our phones in the halls in between periods, but now we can ’t even use them in the cafeteria.

Many people don’t like this rule, but it does have some pros. First, we now have more time to hang out with our friends during lunch. When you have a phone, you are so busy with it that you don’t like to have a real conversation with your friends. This rule can definitely improve our social skills. Second, it isn’t healthy to be looking at a phone screen all day. We could probably take a break from our phones once in a while. Finally, we should learn how to respect the rules and realize that there will be consequences. Overall, the rule has both pros and cons. We should respect that our school has this policy.

Music: The Top 10 of 2014 2014 was great music-wise but not sales-wise. Music sales continued to plummet. Thirteen albums went platinum in 2013, while only four did in 2014. Aside from the downfall of music sales, 2014’s ten top selling albums and songs were very diverse. Frozen sold millions of songs and albums, and Taylor Swift took over the music charts. Pharrell Williams continued to do well. In 2013, his song “Blurred Lines” was the top selling song and in 2014, “Happy” was. The biggest album seller of 2014 was Taylor Swift. Her albums always sell a lot, and this album defined her as a major threat in the industry. The rest of the top selling albums were diverse, with soundtracks, jazz, country, and pop all mixed in, but Frozen and Taylor Swift were the only albums to sell over three million copies. 2014 also had a huge touring chart. The year’s top selling tour was One Direction, with Justin Timberlake coming in second. Katy Perry, One Direction, Lady Gaga, and Paul McCartney were all in the top ten. Book Review: Devin Rhodes is Dead

Devin Rhodes is Dead is a teen novel written by Jennifer Wolf Kam, who also wrote “The White House,” and “The Tall Grass” in the book Hunger Mountain. The book follows a fifteen-year-old girl named Cass. She’s chubby and loves to play guitar. Cass feels responsible for the death of her best friend, Devin Rhodes. After a fight, Devin runs off, and is later found by the police, dead at the bottom of a canyon. Cass gets wrapped up further in the event when she encounters someone she saw the night of Devin’s death, a boy named Marcus, and thinks she’s going crazy when she suspects Devin’s ghost is haunting her. She fights her grief and the will to tell the detective coming to her house that she did it. The book gives a murder-mystery so many shocking and emotional twists that it is a great book for teens. In the several hundred pages in the book, Kam introduces you to Cass’s world and leaves you understanding and feeling connected to every single character. She alternates in before and after chapters, giving a clear view of the causes and effects of the book’s plot. The ending leaves you thinking that there is going to be, or should be, a sequel. The exciting thing is that Kam doesn’t live that far away; in fact, she lives in Syosset. I personally know Kam and her family, and I have even seen early drafts of the book before it was sent to the editor. This book would be great for any mature kid age ten and up, because the phenomenal book introduces plot twists that you would never expect to be in a murder-mystery and leaves you demanding a sequel. Movie Review: Annie Annie is a movie about a girl who is looking for her parents. It is based off of the comic strip Little Orphan Annie, by Harold Gray. A new version has just come out. This version is much more modern because of many things. For instance, Will Stacks (Daddy Warbucks in the original) is a wealthy businessman who sells cell phones. When the original movie came out, there were not as many cell phones as there are now. Also, in the original, Annie was an orphan, but she is a foster kid in the new version. In the United States, there are no orphanages anymore. In foster care, children stay in a temporary home until their parents can take care of them again. They cannot be adopted unless their parents either give up their rights or abandon them. Another thing that is modern about this new movie is that Annie and Will Stacks are African American. This shows that all races are

equal. People of all races can be foster kids or rich. Both versions of Annie are very interesting, and I recommend that you should see them. -By Abigail L.

The recent terrorist attack on journalists at a French magazine has caused a debate on the limits of free speech. Our country was founded on the right of freedom of speech, which means that people can express unpop-ular topics without being charged with a crime, or even worse, killed. In reality, a nation should work hard to protect each person's right to express different views so that change can occur and our leaders will know how its citizens are feeling. A nation that doesn't limit free speech allows its citizens to express different ideas that help discover the best solution for a problem. For exam-ple, imagine our leaders passed a law about which topics could be written about in a newspaper or magazine. As a result, good arguments for and against a "banned" topic would never get to be debated. People would never get a chance to learn different views about the topic, and if a better or fairer way to deal with the topic existed, the government would never know. In addition, how would our leaders come up with a list of topics that could be discussed? It would depend on the views of the people passing the law and might exclude important issues that should be debated. Eventually, people would likely add more and more topics that could not be discussed, and the limits on free speech would be greater than the freedoms of free speech. In response to the killing of the journalists in France, our leaders might add the topic of religion to the list of topics that could not be discussed. Our nation was founded on the belief that a government should not censor what its citizens can say. In fact, one of the main reasons the colonies fought to be independent was because they felt like they had no voice in how their government worked and had no way to speak freely about their

Limits on Free Speech

Page 6

concerns. People will have confidence in their government if they are able to speak freely about their leaders and the laws they pass. In addition, censorship is hazardous because people should be able to have all the information available about their values. Picture a jury deciding the fate of someone accused of a crime. They would not be allowed to use certain information about the crime because the government said no. This would be unfair to the person on trial and people would question the fairness of it. Furthermore, people are smart enough to know what information is appropriate and what is not. We do not need a government telling us what we can say or read, because they are not smarter than the people who elected them. Once we decide that certain subjects will be censored, it can lead to more and more censorship until we are a nation where the people have no voice in how they are governed. Some people may argue that free speech should be limited when it can be harmful or possibly cause danger to people. However, it is hard to decide when speech can be harmful. The people in France may not have known that cartoons about religion would cause other people to get angry. It is hard to figure out when someone will be offended by someone else’s opinions. Further-more, people have to be able to listen to opposing views they may find hurtful and not react with violence. The best way to react to an opinion you do not relate to is to respond with an opposing view. In this way, people are allowed to hear all the views about an issue and decide which one makes more sense. In reality, our nation already has laws about certain speech that can be lim-ited. For example, speech that is likely to cause violence should be

limited. There are some limits to what can be communicated on the internet and shown to children. However, the limitations should be as little as possible, while at the same time, doing what is right for our nation. A free nation must have free speech so that the citizens have the greatest opportunity to speak what is on their mind. By not limiting free speech, all the views about an issue are heard and the problem may be fixed as soon as possible. If we start to limit speech, it will become easier to limit more and more speech until the topics we cannot discuss are greater than what we can discuss. This is not what our country was founded on and not why we fought so hard during the Revolutionary War. People should react to opinions they do not like with their own opinions and not harm those who believe in different things. Every-one should fight words with words and not have to be violent. By Rebecca R.

“People should react to opinions they do not like with their own opinions, and

not harm those who believe in different things. Everyone

should fight words with words and not

have to be violent.”

Scientists Report Other Planets May Have Life

Kepler-186f is an exoplanet orbiting a star about five hundred light years from Earth. It has an almost equal distance from its star as Earth does from the sun. Scientists do not know if it has an atmosphere. Telescopes can’t show this, but Kepler-186f may possibly have water.

Kepler-62f is even more similar to Earth’s size, and it orbits a more sun-like star. It may possibly have a more condensed atmosphere though. It has a larger distance from its star, too.

The Keplers may be one of the most similar galaxies we know about right now. Kepler-93b is the most likely to have life. It has a measurement of about one and half times the size of our planet. Kepler-93b lies about 300 light years away from us. It has a likely surface temperature of about 1,400 degrees, though! The planet’s density is also about nearly twice as Earth! The fact that Kepler-93b can hold gases on its surface is also very unlikely. Kepler-93b probably has an extended atmosphere, also. So, let’s not assume anything yet.

Do you remember going to the zoo when you were little and seeing those cute sea lions doing tricks? That seems okay, but wait until you hear the whole truth about the “wonderful” zoo. For animals, living in a zoo is equivalent to spending your life in a prison with no way out. Most animals live in zoos from their birth to death. Zoos aren’t the best place for animals to live their lives. This is why animals should be freed from zoos and released into the wild. Animals should be let out of zoos because they are mistreated. For example, most animals are not fed the right amount of food for a healthy diet. In the Toledo Zoo, a bear starved to death because he wasn’t given any food or water while hibernating. In addition, many animals are thrown away. In one zoo, a giraffe that lived out its “usefulness” was thought of as used garbage. He was killed, cut up, and then fed to the lions. Similarly, in a Minne-sota Zoo’s yearly farm display, baby ani-mals that grow up and lose their youthful look are sent to livestock auctions. Animals should be freed from zoos because they are put in zoos for the wrong reasons. For example, zoo owners say zoos exist for conservation purposes only. How-ever, more than half of the animals in zoo exhibits are not endangered at all. The

ones that are endangered are often bred in captive breeding programs. This seems reasonable, but most breeding programs are unsuccessful due to the unnatural settings. In addition, zoos claim to be effective educational tools. Zoos state that they educate the public by showing wild animals and their natural behaviors in the wild. But one zoo actually had to put their penguins on anti-depressants just to make them behave naturally. In the Gaza Zoo, donkeys were presented as zebras; they just had black and white stripes painted on them! Some people will argue that animals in zoos are given everything they need, and they don’t even have to work. However, if generations and generations of animals don’t use their skills, they will suffer the consequenc-es. For example, their ability to hunt will diminish because they will not need to hunt. All zoos give their ani-mals certain amounts of food in a dish. Furthermore, their ability to reproduce will go away because most zoos keep animals like gorillas and tigers separat-ed by gender. This lowers the species population due to loss of mating. If an animal doesn’t have a mate, then it can’t produce offspring. Finally, de-fending territory will be no more.

Animals Should Not Be Kept in Zoos

If animals don’t defend their territory, they will let humans take away their once beloved habitat. About 46-58 million square miles of forest are lost each year. That number is equivalent to 36 football fields lost every minute. Clearly, zoos should let animals roam free in the wild, rather than rot in a cage. Animals are treated cruelly in zoos and deserve to live in their natural habitats like a real animal should. Zoos keep animals for the money, and not for the animal’s well-being. Animals will be-come lazy and lose their zest for life in the great outdoors. It’s time for you and everyone to help release these majestic animals from their death sentence and return to their natural habitats.

By Nicholas D.

What exactly is a computer? Google defines a computer as “an electronic device for storing and processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable program; a person who makes calculations, especially with a calcu-lating machine.” But it’s a bit simpler than that: a computer is a personal computing device. You may not know it, but you are surrounded by computers. In fact, you carry them in your pocket. Yes, a phone is a computer; so is a tab-let. It is a device that does functions, stores data in memory, and is a personal device. You are probably reading this on a computer. A laptop is a computer, and a good one, too, but when it comes to being upgradable, a laptop isn’t the best. So that leaves one other type of computer: a desktop. A desktop is a very good choice for a computer. The one I am talking about is a gaming pc, which is used for the purpose of gaming, rendering high end videos, and doing other tasks that many computers can do. There are a couple of choices when getting a gaming pc. One choice is to buy one; a very appealing option. Another option is making a pc. What do I mean by making a pc? Well, instead of buying a gaming pc online, with little customization options and a greater price, you can just buy the parts of a pc and build it. It is both a money-saving and educational experience. Building a gaming pc has many more options than buying one online. You can customize it with your choice of graphics cards, processors, cases, fans, ram, hard drives and many other options. The price range for a gaming pc can be from $550 to $4000, but the av-erage gaming pc costs around $1000, not including peripherals like mouse, screen(s), keyboard, headphones, speakers, games and other software. And it can run games at a high quality or render videos in HD. Some important parts of a gaming computer are a CPU, Gpu, cooling, Os, and the motherboard.

Technology

What is a graphics card? A graphics card, also known as a Gpu, is used to enhance the graphics and the overall look on the monitor. It is usually a de-tachable card that is one of the most expensive parts of the build, and it is also the one that people say you should invest in the most. Gaming graphics cards range from $90 to $1000. What is the processor? A processor is like the brain of the computer, where the calculations take place. It is another important part of the build. Most gaming computers have processors with 4 to 8 cores. There are several major brands of processors, but the two main ones are AMD and Intel, which range from $80 to $350. What is the Motherboard? The mother board is the big connecting piece to all the parts. It contains chipsets that have to do with internet, usb ports, and audio connections, along with other connections. Motherboards vary from $50 to $200. What is cooling? The cooling is a very important part of a computer. It helps the computer keep cool in intense situa-tions like a gaming session. Without it, a system might overheat, decreasing the life of the system. What is the Os? The Os is the operating system, like Windows 7, Windows 8, ios, Linux, and Steam Os. Even phones have an operating system, like android or ios. Prices of Os range from free to $200.

Building a gaming pc can save money. Imagine someone was to order a gaming pc with these specifi-cations: 8 gbs of ram, Intel core i7 4790k, ASUS motherboard, NVidia gtx 720, and mid tower gaming case. It would cost 35% less to order the indi-vidual parts on a site like Newegg and build it yourself. They will also spend less on upgrading in the future. Another problem with buying gaming pcs online is shipping troubles, from the computer not turning on to it being broken. If you build one, you can check every part before putting it in the computer, therefore reducing the amount of problems and making it easier to locate the problem if there is one. Building a computer is educa-tional. If someone builds a computer, it teaches them about technology. It gives them experience which they can use later on or even turn into a career. You might be thinking, “It’s hard to build a pc.” Though it may look hard, it’s fairly easy, kind of like Legos for grownups. You can build a gam-ing pc in 30 minutes using online tutorials. And what if you mess something up? Messing something up is possible, but hard if you follow instructions and ground yourself. To ground yourself you could buy an anti-static wrist strap or frequently touch something that is grounded, like a metal sink or anything large and me-tallic. Building a computer is a fun, money-saving, educational experi-ence. You will learn about electronics and have a computer to use after-wards for different types of tasks, from checking your emails to playing games with stunning graphics on a high setting. So next time you’re in the market for a gaming pc, consider building instead of buying.

Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be a fashion designer. That job was in my mind for six years. I would have thoughts about living in New York City and going to college there until my career took off. When I was younger, I would have only two dolls but over a thousand shirts, pants, skirts and dresses. Another thing that I would do is go to my friend’s house and pick out their outfits for school, and I just knew I wanted to become a fashion designer. I have felt this way until one little 45-minute film clip inspired me.

It was in late October and my class was going on a field trip to the movies. We were watching two 45-minute clips. Even though we saw two, only one of them got in my head and made me start to think. The clip was about a woman working in marine biology. She would go down under the sea and collect items from the ground, then come up from the submarine and examine them. She would go scuba diving and take pictures of animals. When she saw baby seals, she would play with them. As I was watching the clip, I realized that I love sea animals and the ocean and I wanted to learn more. That’s when it hit me: I really did want to be a marine biologist. After realizing that, the idea was stuck in my head like glue on paper. Who ever thought that a 45-minute clip would change my future and my ca-reer?

Even though the idea was in my head, the idea of becoming a fashion designer came to mind sometimes as well. I felt unsure about what I really wanted to be, so I did some research on each topic. To be a fashion designer is great and all, but deep down inside I wanted to do what the woman in the clip was doing. I wanted to go scuba diving, take pictures, go in a submarine, and search for animals. I wanted to find new species of an animal that no one ever heard about. I wanted to do everything that the woman was doing. Now I know becoming a marine biologist is just for me. And that’s how a 45-minute clip changed my life. By Rebecca T.

It was Super Bowl Sunday, on February 1, 2015, in Phoenix, Arizona. The score was 28-24, and the New Eng-land Patriots were beating the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks were at the one-yard line, threatening to win the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year. Russell Wilson was at quarterback, and all they had to do was run the ball with star running back, Marshawn Lynch, and they’d be Super Bowl champions. But coach Pete Carroll wanted to trick the defense and throw the ball to one of the Seahawks’ wide receivers, so they did. They hiked the ball with 25 seconds left, and Russell Wilson threw an interception to a cornerback of the Patriots. The Patriots were the Super Bowl 49 champions! Pete Carroll took total blame for the call and was interviewed on ESPN and on NBC for the Today Show. This was considered one of the worst calls in Super Bowl history. By Max Y.

Life After Jeter For the first time in 20 years, Yankees fans won’t be seeing a familiar face in Derek Jeter at the shortstop position. Instead, they will be seeing Didi Gregorius, who was traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Yankees, who sent pitcher Shane Greene from New York to the Tigers, and Robbie Ray and Domingo Leyba from Detroit to Arizona. Gregorius has played three years in the Majors: one with the Cincinnati Reds and two with the Diamondbacks. In an interview with

Jack Curry of the YES Network, the Yankees TV Network, Curry posed a question about a picture of Derek Jeter that Gregorius had drawn and then tweeted out. Gregorius said the drawing was a tribute to the Captain and an acknowledgement that he had big cleats to fill. For the Diamondbacks in the 2014 campaign, Didi played in 80 games, hitting .226 with 6 HRs, and 27 RBIs. He has 191 MLB games under his belt and a career average of .243, with an MLB total of 13 homers, and 57 RBIs. These are not Jeterian numbers and no one expects him to be Derek Jeter, but the Yankee fans hope that Gregorius can be a solid shortstop in the 2015 season. Only time will tell. By Seth S.
