2018 ANNUAL REPORT Letter from the Executive Director The Maryland SPCA – Community, Compassion and Care Last year, we put in motion our 2020 plan with a goal to improve the lives of 20,000 pets and 25,000 people. In this report, you’ll read about these efforts to extend the reach of our Education, Veterinary Services and Humane Care programs into com- munities that need them most. Focusing on both our four- and two-legged clients, we worked tirelessly to deliver—and exceed the quality of care that has come to define us. With an eye towards the future, planning also got underway for multi-phased campus improvements that began with renovations to our Wellness Clinic in early 2018 and will continue with the mansion house in Summer 2019. Our website is also getting a complete makeover to improve access to our programs and services. Inside and out—we are honoring our commitment to animals that began in 1869 and setting our sights on the next 150 years. 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

Letter from the Executive Director

The Maryland SPCA – Community, Compassion and Care

Last year, we put in motion our 2020 plan with a goal to improve the lives of 20,000

pets and 25,000 people. In this report, you’ll read about these efforts to extend the

reach of our Education, Veterinary Services and Humane Care programs into com-

munities that need them most. Focusing on both our four- and two-legged clients, we

worked tirelessly to deliver—and exceed the quality of care that has come to define us.

With an eye towards the future, planning also got underway for multi-phased campus

improvements that began with renovations to our Wellness Clinic in early 2018 and

will continue with the mansion house in Summer 2019. Our website is also getting a

complete makeover to improve access to our programs and services.

Inside and out—we are honoring our commitment to animals that began in 1869 and

setting our sights on the next 150 years.

I cannot thank you enough for standing with us as we work to build a future of

compassion and care for all of Maryland’s cats and dogs.

Sincerely,

Jim Peirce

ACCORDING TO THE US CENSUS BUREAU AND THE AMERICAN VETERINARY MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, an estimated 63,000 pets live with 135,000 Baltimore

City residents (22%) below the poverty line.

Thanks to new partnerships launched in 2018, the

Maryland SPCA, Charm City Companions (CCC) and

B-More Dog are bringing critical care and resources to

Baltimore’s under-served neighborhoods, including

veterinarians and technicians, free exams and vaccines,

vouchers and transportation for free spay/neuter

surgeries and a variety of pet supplies.

“We’re not here to judge,” said Annie Pruitt, CCC’s

executive director. “We’re here to help.”

Pauline Houliaras, representing B-More Dog said “Our

partnership has made a huge difference in our ability to

get critical resources to dog owners in the low income

Baltimore neighborhoods we’ve been serving for

many years.”

Katie Flory, MD SPCA director of community relations

reported, “Working together, we served 846 pets and

their families in 2018.“

Education & Outreach

Veterinary Services “SHELTERS ARE TREATING MORE COMPLICATED MEDICAL CONCERNS than we ever have. While

this is amazing for the animals and people, it does

come at a hefty price tag.” — Dr. Karen Burks,

director of veterinary medicine, the Maryland SPCA

Thanks to an anonymous donor that price tag was a

little smaller in 2018. This person, moved to alleviate

animals’ suffering, helped the MD SPCA purchase

dental x-ray equipment to spot and correct oral dis-

ease below the gum line. 202 pets benefited from this

technology.

Tyson Smith and Shirrice Conney, surgical technicians administer vaccines at one of four B-More Dog clinics.

Humane CareROUGHLY ONE THIRD OF PETS COME TO THE MARYLAND SPCA FROM OTHER SHELTERS. Our transport program helped 14 sister shelters

by relieving overcrowding and accepting pets with

treatable medical conditions.

Some animals made a temporary stop in the MD

SPCA foster care program to live with trained vol-

unteers and prepare for forever homes. Others were

fast-tracked for adoption.

Thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers and

foster parents, the MD SPCA added a multi-purpose

vehicle in 2018 to expand the size and scope of our

transport and off-site adoption programs, benefiting

1,680 pets.

MD SPCA’s new vehicle at Festival for the Animals.

Volunteer Claire Hoffman and foster parent Betsy Davis

were among many donors who invested in the new

vehicle. “Community outreach is a vital and growing

aspect of the Maryland SPCA’s mission,” said Claire. “If a

new vehicle can help with that mission, I wanted to be a

part of making that happen.”
