COMPASSION IN ACTION NEWSLETTER OF THE SPCA SERVING ERIE COUNTY ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR OCT. 1, 2018 - SEPT. 30, 2019 On Saturday, August 10, 3-year-old Lilly, the Labrador Retriever mix, was hit by a car and transferred to the SPCA after she was stabilized at an emergency veterinary clinic. She sustained a bad femoral fracture with several fragments. Both of her front legs had severe skin lacerations, and both were bandaged when she came in. Because she must’ve been so solidly hit by the car, Lilly also sustained trauma to her lungs which made it difficult for her to breathe. Because of her unstable lungs, Lilly was not stable enough for us to put her under anesthesia for surgery. I prescribed antibiotics, IV fluids, and pain medications. The veterinary staff watched her carefully and we put her in an oxygen cage because she wasn’t breathing well. I didn’t want her to have increased respiratory effort because it would worsen the leakage in her lungs. On Monday, we changed the bandages on her front legs and assessed the damage. We put a sugar bandage on both, which helped to remove dead tissue, promote some healing, and prepared her wounds for potential laceration repairs. On Wednesday, we changed all of Lilly’s bandages and we could see that things were improving. On Thursday, I felt she was doing well enough out of her oxygen cage that we elected to do surgery that day. Because her lungs were still fragile and I didn’t want any more lung damage to occur, Dr. Cucui and I worked on Lilly at the same time together. Dr. Cucui amputated Lilly’s hind leg while I addressed the lacerations on her front legs. A veterinary technician monitored Lilly’s anesthesia closely to make sure her lungs were doing well. We monitored her closely for the next 48 hours and Lilly recovered perfectly! Her amputation and laceration sites healed well, and we removed her stitches. NEWSLETTER OF THE SPCA SERVING ERIE COUNTY

ANNUAL REPORTFISCAL YEAR OCT. 1, 2018 - SEPT. 30, 2019

On Saturday, August 10, 3-year-old Lilly, the Labrador Retriever mix, was hit by a car and transferred to the SPCA after she was stabilized at an emergency veterinary clinic.

Lilly was adopted very quickly, which came as no surprise to me because this dog is a sweetheart!

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

A year seems to have flown by in the blink of an eye! But it was a year of continued successes for the SPCA Serving Erie County.

The Stanford & Judith C. Lipsey Veterinary Clinic is up and running, serving the public! Our veterinarians, along with students from Lincoln Memorial University, are working together to meet our goal of helping pets remain in their homes. In October, the Lipsey Clinic saw almost 250 clients, and the numbers go up every month.

Our Strategic Planning Committee, comprised of board and staff members, worked tirelessly throughout the year to complete several important initiatives such as updating the SPCA’s mission and vision statements. The mission statement has recently been posted throughout the building to keep our goal — “… to create a more humane community through education; rescuing, protecting, and enhancing the lives of animals; and nurturing the bond between animals and people” — top of mind to all staff and visitors. The committee also oversaw the implementation of an Awareness & Perception Study, which will help to inform our decisions for many years to come.

2019 saw the formation of the WNY Human & Animal Abuse Coalition, and establishment of the Sheltering Animals for Emergencies (SAFE) program, which provides long-term sheltering of pets for victims of domestic violence. This program meets a critical need in our community as more than 40% of domestic violence victims stay in an abusive situation out of fear for what would happen to their pet if they left.

These successes, and many others, wouldn’t be possible without President and CEO Gary Willoughby and the hardworking, knowledgeable, and amazing SPCA staff. Thank you also to the Board Executive Committee — Jeff Birtch, Nick Gentile, and Jennifer Walter — and all the dedicated and enthusiastic Committee Chairs and Members.

Oh, and another 2019 success was the Schechter family adoption of Trix, the bunny! Isn’t he adorable?

JULIE DESMOND SCHECHTER BOARD CHAIR

2019 was another milestone year for the SPCA Serving Erie County. Our partnerships grew in many ways, allowing us to help more animals and the people who love them.

We were selected as one of ten communities in the country as an AlignCare model organization. Soon, in our Lipsey Clinic low-cost public veterinary initiative, we will partner with local social service agencies to help offer a model that will be like a “Medicaid” program for pets living in approved households, to assure access to medical care for their dogs and cats.

We are honored to soon host the nation’s first tele-health medical care program for a number of recently adopted cats in partnership with Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and the Catalyst Council.

Our SPCA is also building strong ties with agencies who support victims of domestic violence, becoming a strong community partner for pet owners looking to safely leave an abusive situation. With your continued support and trust, our board of directors, staff, and volunteers will continue to find more ways to help.

Champions Partner!

MISSION At the SPCA Serving Erie County, our mission is to create a more humane community through education; rescuing, protecting, and enhancing the lives of animals; and nurturing the bond between animals and people.

The SPCA Serving Erie County is not affiliated financially in any way with any other animal agency — including the Niagara County SPCA, the ASPCA, or any other humane society or animal welfare group. Our protocols, policies, and procedures are unique to this organization, a completely independent humane society that does not receive any city, county, state, or federal tax dollars. The important programs and services of the SPCA Serving Erie County are possible only due to the caring people and organizations that support us.

WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT: HAWK HITCHES A RIDE IN THE MOST UNUSUAL WAY

In the middle of August, a Red-Tailed Hawk was probably going about his summer day hunting when a car on the NYS Thruway got in his way. The car was going at least 65 mph when the driver noticed a hawk on the side of the road eating lunch. Right as the SUV was approaching, the hawk took off and a collision occurred between the hawk and the front grill of the SUV.

The driver pulled off at the Pembroke service area and discovered that the hawk was wedged inside the front grill. The driver called for help. New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Officer Wilson and New York State Trooper Musynski came to the rescue! Officer Wilson called a local wildlife rehabber who works closely with the SPCA’s Wildlife Department and helped get the bird to us!

Incredibly, when the hawk arrived at the SPCA and was assessed, there was only one broken primary feather with a small amount of blood. That was his only injury! He had many flat flies that we helped remove with a spray and we gave him a couple of very good meals, including extra vitamins and, in a day, he was released!

WILLOW'S FOSTER STORY

Every animal placed into foster care is unique, and many have lived lifetimes well beyond their years before arriving at the shelter. Such is the case with sweet Willow, a year-old pit bull mix who was sadly unwanted by her owner. Willow was brought in by our Peace Officers in early autumn with painfully itchy and reddened skin. Her coat was severely thinned, with many areas of hair loss covering her body. Although she appeared as if she had been abandoned, her love of humans had not been lost, as this affectionate pup warmed up to nearly everyone she encountered.

While Willow was in the shelter, she began receiving treatment for her uncomfortably dry skin with multiple medicated baths, oral antibiotics, prescription food, and of course, lots of love.

Once Willow was deemed healthy enough to leave the shelter, she was sent into foster care with our Special Agent Jennifer to continue the healing process. Jennifer dedicated time to not only provide all the necessary medical care, but also helped teach this rambunctious pup about proper canine manners.

Over the course of a few months, Willow responded well to treatment and was deemed healthy enough to have her spay surgery. And as you can probably guess, after she was spayed, Willow was adopted by Jennifer! If you ask me, Jennifer needed happiness at that particular time in her life and Willow needed the love and patience. It was a perfect fit!

In January 2019, the SPCA received a call for assistance from the SPCA Serving Allegany County. They had a case involving more than 100 farm animals living in deplorable conditions on two separate properties that were owned by the same individual.

After a search warrant was granted, five SPCA Serving Erie County employees (including both of our Educational Farm staff members) assisted with the day-long rescue. One hundred and forty animals were rescued from the two properties including cows, sheep, goats, ponies, miniature horses, ducks, chickens, dogs, and cats.

This past March, we transferred in two animals from the case: Flint, a 5-year-old brown and white pinto miniature stallion and Opal, a 7-year-old bay grade pony mare. During their stay with us, our dedicated farm staff and volunteers acclimated the pair with daily handling and care. Additionally, the pair were updated on their vaccines and hoof trimmings and Flint was gelded. Flint and Opal made great progress during their stay here and both were quickly adopted!

GOES ON A WILD GOOSE CHASE

INVESTIGATIONS AND RESCUE DEPARTMENT

Officers LeShay and Wlodarczyk removed tangled fishing line from a goose’s foot on July 25, 2019. The SPCA received many calls about this goose and initially one officer responded, but he was unable to confine the animal because of the size of the Lancaster pond the goose was in. The Investigations and Rescue Department worked as a team utilizing a kayak to eventually confine the goose. They provided initial triage and got the goose back to the SPCA’s Wildlife Department for a further examination. The goose was released shortly after the fishing line was removed from his foot.
