    The internet superhighway is known to be theelectronic road for freedom of expression. Many hadeven thought of it as a source of many positive andnegative publicity either political or entertainment.People refer to the internet to mingle with friendswhen they have less time to actually meet them.Now, its security and freedom is threatened by theso called cybercrime law created to protect figures of making it just a small passage to enjoy. Though,there are still chances to widen its way for as of to-day it is suspended for further studies and analysis.

    The suspension of the said law purely is ablessing to media and people who wish to enjoy thefreedom of expression most specially on politicalmatters that also affect their lives. Every citizen of

    this country has the right to speak their mind respon-sibly and have the right to know what is going on insociety in the convenience of the internet. Makingsuch law is a violation to freedom of expression. Fur-thermore, this law will limit the thoughts of youngpeople to commit themselves to society. The law hadmade many young people anxious for somehow thiswide road that keeps them connected to societymaking them responsible individuals and free fromthe walls that imprisoned their thought is created toprotect the self interest of politicians.

    Thanks its suspended.

    jectives: to improve learn-ers reading ability, diagnose their reading

    deficiency and provide so-lutions to these deficien-cies, to help expose stu-dents in different readingactivities, and to

    Do we need to addup more year for basiceducation? Is this a solu-tion to Philippine educa-tional needs? An addi-tional burden for parents?The Department of Educa-tion has been bombardedwith such but surely thissystem of education willmake a great difference.

    From the very be-ginning of this programmany questions had beenraised: How would it helpthe economy of the coun-try? How could it help inimproving the performanceof the students? and thebiggest question is: Canthe Filipino people afford it?

    The debate of thepros and antis had rever-berated in the ears of teachers all over the coun-try asking why do we needsuch program while thetruth always could be seenthat the country has themost numbers of Englishspeaking people in Asiaand that we don't need ad-

    ditional years to spendmore money.

    Perhaps its a lotexpensive to have theK+12 working, but theDepartment of Educationsurely had thought of thefuture benefits of the stu-dents in the country towhere the secondaryschools offering livelihoodsubjects that will enablethe students to have bet-ter chances of going tohigher education usingthe skills they acquire inthe secondary throughbusiness and livelihoodopportunities.

    The idea tolengthen the basic educa-tion in the country is notsomething new. In fact,an attempt was made in1925 to solve the educa-tional inadequacy of thebasic education programof the country but was notapproved due to the hugeamount of money neededfor the said proposal. An-other attempt to add upmore years in basic edu-

    cation happened in 2004under Former president

    Arroyo administration butnot a success.

    This is idea to addtwo years more to basiceducation is not anymorea new idea. Theresponses of the publicare also not very new.

    There seem to behaunting truths engulfingDepEd and they should takethese as challenges. Irrefu-tably, the country reallyneeds to cope with the ad-vancing educational systemof other countries andhopes to produce graduateswho can help in gearing upthe countrys economy.

    Lets give this break-through in Philippine Educa-tion a chance to prove itsworth. We cannot expect

    return of investment in just awink of an eye. What wecan do is to give our all-outsupport so we can truly getwhat we all expect: a goodreturn of investment for our country, for our economy.

    M arbel NHS is an institu-tion of many good andtalented teachers. Recently,there is one who has been

    added in the list. MNHSproudly presents its newteacher for this school year2010-2011.

    Lets start knowingher. This new mentor hasbeen hired to replace Mr.

    Altemore Maguate whotransferred to Matalam HighSchool (Poblacion). She wasborn on January 21, 1980and presently residing atManuel Roxas St., Poblacion

    Antipas, Cotabato. She wasmarried to Mr. Francois

    Canon who is connected with Sumifru Banana Planta-tion.

    She finished her col-lege education at USM, ma-

    jor in Biology in 2001 as cumlaude. After graduation, she

    was determined to look for a job to help her family and soshe jumped at the chance of applying as Magtutudlo saBarangay of the ProvincialGovernment of Cotabatoand was assigned at MalireNational High School where

    she had taught for threeyears.

    With fervent prayers,she got a permanent post atMarbel NHS in the year 2005

    where she was deployed toteach at Agustin ValdeviesoSr. Memorial High School.There, she spent five yearsteaching Biology subject.But due to inevitable cir-cumstance, she was tempo-rarily transferred to Kaba-can National High School inOsias Annex, Kabacan Cota-bato where she taught foronly three months.

    But now, she has finallyfound her real home, Mar-bel NHS. Presently, she isteaching Science I,

    Values Education III, Araling

    Panlipunan IVand as first year-A adviser. She

    was also desig-

    nated as GirlsScout adviser.

    Whenasked what kindof person shelikes to be with,she had this tosay: I lovefriends who arehonest, loyaland God-fearing. I dont like people

    who are arrogant andsenseless.

    What can she sayabout her new colleagues?She said that Marbel NHSteachers are impressivebecause they are friendly,approachable and can berelied on in terms of prob-lems. She also said thatMarbelNHS is a challeng-ing school because she hasnot experienced in otherschools she has been to thekind of challenge she hasbeen looking for.

    This mentor believes

    that if you want to succeedyou must have three im-portant things. First, thepocket to finance all thethings you need; second,the head to know and findyour weaknesses andstrength, to apply andchoose the correct and ac-curate decisions and third,the determination that actsas the battery or the right

    way to finish your goals.What an explosive point of

    view! Is it because shes acanon? Maybe, but trulyshes the canon that MarbelNHS needs. She is AraceliP. Canon, a young breed of mentor willing to serve inthe name of educationalenhancement and aca-demic excellence of Mar-bel NHS.

    Marbel National High SchoolMarbel, Matalam, 9406 Cotabato Province

    Marbel National High School is legislated school in Cotabato Province, specifically inBarangay Marbel of the Municipality of Matalam established in 1996.

    Marbel is a community of Muslim and Christians, majority of which are Maguindanaonsand Ilocanos.Before GEM and its education projects came to our school, we had low achievement rate and a highdropout rate. We didnt have a library, multimedia equipment, computers or an internet connection.Students and teachers either had low or zero knowledge on ICT. We never had NGO support.

    In 2004, GEMs Computer Literacy and Internet Connection or the CLIC Project came toour school. For the first time that year, the students and the teachers experienced the thrill of usingcomputers and the internet.

    The following year, I took a bold step of offering Computer Education as a separate subjectto all year levels with just five computers from CLIC Project. This became an institutionalized initia-tive as curriculum enrichment.

    Also in 2004, Marbel NHSs PTA jumped at the chance of applying for a grant from the

    Education Awareness and Support Effort-Matching Grant or EASE Project, which is now called theEducation Matching Grant of GEM. Through this grant, we were able to establish a mini- library util-izing of the 7X8 sq. m. c lassroom. The PTA purchased a TV and GEM provided an overhead pro-

    jector and a DVD player. This was the first approved MGP of Marbel National High School.

    After the first approved MGP activity, the Marbel NHSPTA has successively submitted andsupported one grant proposal after another. These include the upgrade of the computer laboratory,the acquisition of multi-media equipment, an LCD projector with projector screen, a wireless router,a printer, and other computer accessories.

    In July 2009, the EMG Project and the PTA shared the cost for one-time installation of internet equipment. Without the Education Matching Grant Project, the school would not have beenable to sustain its internet connection since the equipment installation was too expensive for the PTAto shoulder alone. Thanks to the Education Matching Grant Project, our school is still connected tothe internet.

    Through GEMs Education Matching Grants intervention, we have become polished. GEM

    has made us glow. For the record:

    1. We have improved academic performance;2. We have enriched the general curriculum by adding computer education as a separate

    subject;3. We have made teaching and learning interactive with the use of the net and multi-

    media equipment;4. We have established review sessions in preparation for NAT, NCAE, and other tests

    employing multi-media equipment like the LCD projector;5. We have access to the websites that offer free review materials as well as teaching

    and learning materials;6. We won in the ICT quiz during the Division Level STEP Skills Competition, SY

    2009-2010;7. Students already have access to library materials especially in doing academic assign-

    ments that require reference books like home reading reports or book reports;8. Teachers are generally more computer literate;9. I, as the school head, have successfully completed the on-line scholarship of

    SEAMEO- Innotechs iFLEX on Instructional and Curricular Excellence in SchoolLeadership and Management for Southeast Asia (ICEXCELS) with former OIC-ARD Allan Farnazo as our on-line tutor purely done in Marbel National HighSchool;

    10. USAID-GEM is the only NGO that supported Marbel National High School andmade it into one of the marvellous schools in Region XII;

    11. The school has gained greater support from the PTA because of EMG Project. ThePTA has felt the presence of GEM in Marbel National High School because wehave all witnessed how the school has improved and the children benefitted fromthese blessings;

    12. Our graduates are equipped with ICT knowledge and skills and mostly are ready for advanced ICT learning in college. In fact, many of them have taken ICT-relatedcourses;

    What now after GEM? (We hope it wont end so soon. We hope it will be extended for more years. We still need GEM). In case, GEM will be gone, we will keep its glitter

    1. by sustaining connection to the internet either through DepEDs DCIP (whichMarbel NHS is fervently hoping to receive this year) or through other fund-raising initiatives;

    2. by continuing to provide learners with quality education that is enriched by theexperiences of ICT;

    3. by maintaining proper care and use of learning facilities provided by USAID-GEM; and

    4. by keeping the pride ever alive of being a rec ipient of USAID- GEMs EMGPand CLIC and being forever grateful to USAID-GEM for all the assistance ithas extended in making marvels for Marbel.

    Ladies and gentlemen, expressing our gratefulness to GEM in words would not beenough. However, let me just sincerely express it in behalf of the parents, students andteachers of Marbel National High School: Thank you very much. Maraming pong salamat,GEM at Education Matching Grant. Pagpalain kayo ng Panginoon. Mabuhay po kayo! Youtruly have made marvels in Marbel.

    (This is a speech delivered by principal Ricky A. Dalida during the celebration of 1100 Educa-tion Matching Grants held at Sun City Suites, General Santos City.)

    A bdul Rasid Angeles- Thatshow he is known to his familyand friends. He was born on August10, 1983 among the eight children of Mr. Sammy N. Angeles, a driver, andMrs. Normina S. Angeles, a house-keeper.

    To help his family and to livedecently have been his dreams ever since. Making ways to make themcome true with faith in the great Allahis his mission.

    He finished his elementaryeducation at Galut, Sultan Mastura,Cotabato city. With the help of Allah,he graduated as first honor. Since then,he always dreamed of learning chess.He could still remember how fascina-tion drove him whenever he watched

    players and their moves. At that timehe told himself, someday Ill be one of them.

    He was in first year highschool at Sultan Kudarat Municipalhigh school when he became sickly.He thought he could not finish thatschool year. But, belief in Allah makesall the possibilities. With prayers hemanaged to continue freshmen year.

    Later, his family moved toMarbel, the reason why his academiclife was also transferred here. He wasin second year high school when hestarted playing chess. He really waslearning it. His father was his mentor.As a starter, countless times he did

    beat him. It was really challenging.Because of this, he became more de-termined to learn playing chess and

    beat his mentor. Through constant practice, his goal was attained. Thereit was! He beat his mentor, not once

    but every time they played.Intramural came. New to real

    competition he didnt join. It was inhis junior year that he decided to testhis newly discovered skill. Gladly hisvery first attempt in this kind of com-

    petition brought him to the districtmeet to represent Marbel NationalHigh School. On that competition he

    thought he was going to bag the 1 st prize since he already beat the star player of Matalam. Thinking that wayhe didnt spend too much attention onhis co-player that made him lost thegame. He landed on the 3 rd place. Thegood thing that taught him from thisexperience is to never take things for granted. Always give the best till theend.

    Another thing he learned inchess is to sacrifice. He was in 4 th year then when he joined a tournament inMlang, North Cotabato. On the actualgame he couldnt make up his mind. Itwas so hard to decide whether to sacri-fice a move or not. It was only faith

    that he cling to. As a result, he made itto top 3 and Alhamdulillah! they hadthe same score (4.5). From then on, herealized that sacrifice is the key tosuccess and that became his lifesmotto. Another achievement he hadduring that time was graduating fromhigh school with flying colors.

    His passion to playing chesshad not ended when he pursued histertiary education at USM, Kabacan,Cotabato. While taking up BS in Agri-culture Business, he also gave time tohis extracurricular life as a Varsity

    player in chess. With great faith inAllah he along with his colleagues,would often times romp away the

    championship trophy in every compe-tition.

    MY PHILOSOPHY OFSUPERVISION

    by Ricky A. Dalida

    Principal IMarbelNHS

    I believe that supervision is my power letmy people shine. Like the sun that shinesbrightly above a clear blue sky. I have to ra-diate what I can do best to my teachers. I be-lieve that this can happen best though myskills in coaching and mentoring and manyother good ways that can trigger them tooshine in great splendor in all aspects of their professional life. I believe that I can bring outthe best in them as a supervisor.

    I believe that the teachers are my businesspartners in making the business grow, gainprofits and share together the joy of profitsharing. Profits would be in terms of qualityperformance outputs of every task assignedthem to do. I believe I have to be the sourceof inspiration for all the teachers under mywatch. I have to inspire them that they willconsider teaching not as work, but as a call-ing. I have to radiate an inspiring dispositionfor them to always bring out the best in them-selves to bring out the best in the students.Eventually, that best when sustained canturn into excellence in the entire school sys-

    tem.

    I believe that teachers should not stagnatein their professional life. I should not allowthem to be static but to be always creative,innovative and result-oriented. I believe thatthey have the power to soar high or evenhigher than what eagles are able to reach.This I can do if I give the best of myself for them. I cannot reach what I aim for if I do itall alone by myself. I have to soar with them,lead them towards a common direction of doing the best and making the best in edu-cation happen * especially for our learners.

    I believe that we have all the capacity to bethe best and this is through my nurturingsupervision.

    F inally, I believe that my supervision canand should always bring all voices to-gether to blend into one as we all say, Gofor the best, be the best**

    L iving a life of fairness is a life of sports. Thiswas a line that I heard from a person I barely knew when I was little. When you think about it, you would say it got a point. Sports does make important impact in the lives of many, even to children who play by therules in every game thought them a lot in life.

    Going in sports would just be for fun for somebut the health benefits that comes with it is so seriousthat it could extend more years in peoples lives. Win-ning on such would even boost self-esteem, develop

    leadership potentials and better relationships.Life is a pure challenge and so we come up with

    sports to live out this test through endurance and stam-ina in facing the realities of the game called life. Young

    people who face the fact of life with its difficulties along with getting themselves into sports likely to finish their studies, do not get pregnant early and away from de-

    pression and anxiety.One of the reasons why other people get into

    sports is that the spirit of friendship between your co-teammates and coaches become stronger as if youtreat each other as a family. Life without a family isempty and so life without getting engaged into sports ismerely blank. Winning the games in life is just like win-

    ning a certain event with the cooperation of each mem-bers, whatever the result will be everybody is responsi-ble. Life has its ups and downs, also sports has it. Ex-

    periencing defeat would make other people quit. But always remember quitting is a sign of being weak.Many issues that would tend to discourage players .One of which is the issue of poor coaching, we might say that there are people that are difficult to coach but it depends on the coach strategies to overcome such

    problem.Engaging into sports activity in school is a train-

    ing ground for us to develop our young minds to beready to the challenging world that awaits us in the fu-ture. Being able to learn new techniques and strategiescould be of great help in winning the game called LIFE.

    Whatever our motivation is it should be for our good and for the others. Striving to bring home the ba-con would be a great motivation for us to strive our best in everything we do. Nevertheless, experience and friendship would be a better goal when you play. Play-ing sport games is not just winning the game but win-ning the heart of every people we met. Being fair to our opponents is the great value that we need to have. Lifeis not about competing to win but also being fair and honest to those people we value the most and so withsports, its not about winning, its about how we play the game.

    In conclusion, the right game for young peoplelike us is within our hearts, young people need to do is

    listen and feel the passion that is inside.
