Marine Corps for FY 2016.3

Of the Marines who were divorced in FY 2016, the overall average age was 29

(average age for Marine Officers is 36 and Enlisted Marines is 28). Approximately 91%

of Marines who were divorced in FY16 were enlisted; about half of those Marines were

NCOs ( 14% Pvts – LCpls; 51% NCOs; 26% SNCOs; 9% Officers).3

In FY 2016, the divorce rate for Marines with a deployment history was 1.9% compared

to 2.2% for Marines with no deployment history. Marines with a deployment history

have historically similar divorce rates as Marines with no deployment history.3

There was an average of 1.2 children involved in each divorce during FY 2016.3

The largest age group of children is the School-Age group (defined as 5 to 12 years)

with 39,952 children. Of all Marine Corps children, 47% are 5 years of age or younger,

Marine and Family

There was an increase in the number of children of Marines across most age groups

from 2008 to 2011, with the sharpest increases occurring in the infant and school-age

groups. Since 2011, the number of children has been decreasing across all age groups.3

The general increase in the number of children from 2008 to 2011 coincided with the

increase in the size of the total force. In 2017, there was an average of 0.53 children

per Marine, and in 2011 there were 0.63 children for each Marine, the highest ratio

in last thirteen years.3 Since 2011, the Marine Corps total size decreased by almost

9%, while the number of children decreased by 20%.1

There are 8,595 Marines enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) with 11,026 exceptional family members.4

From 2007 to 2013, EFMP enrollment increased consistently despite an overall

reduction in force. Since 2013, EFMP enrollment remained fairly stable, however; the

overall number of children of Marines decreased.

The majority of dependents enrolled in EFMP are children. The average age for

enrolled children is 8.7 years, spouses is 34.3 years, parents is 57.7 years, and others

is 34.5 years.
