THE MANNING PLAZA HAPPY NEWS
OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 2018
Please plan to attend our
Family Christmas Open House Thursday, December 13, 2018
at 7pm in the Plaza Dining Room.
Be sure to bring a plate of goodies to share and a gift for your loved one.
Rummage / Bake Sale
Tuesday, November 20, 2018 2-3pm in the Plaza Dining Room
Home baked goods for your Thanksgiving gathering and
residents will also have homemade gift items for sale.
On Sunday. October 28th we will have popcorn balls for trick or treaters as Manning hosts its annual Halloween Beggar’s Night from 4-6pm.
We will also be handing out treats for the
Main Street Trick or Treat event on Wednesday, October 31st from 4—5pm.
It’s crazy to think that we are already in
October and the Holidays are just around the
corner. With that in mind, I thought I would
give you a few gift ideas so that you can be
thinking ahead.
The holidays are a wonderful time to share the
gift of time with family and/or friends at the
Plaza. Visits are cherished moments and
mean so much to the residents. If you are
uneasy about visiting a friend or loved one at
the Plaza, or even if you visit frequently, here
is a tip to help the conversations run smoothly
and brighten the day for both of you. Bring
something with you to talk about. The
resident will relish and reflect over old photos,
a purse filled with “stuff”, a gift pertaining to
their greatness like jewelry, fishing lures,
perfume, favorite food or a farmer’s hat.
A few other gift ideas might include
stationary, all occasion greeting cards, stamps
and writing supplies for those who are capable
of writing out cards and letters. You could
also include an address book with the names
and addresses of family and friends. A photo
album, digital picture frame or scrapbook
filled with valuable memories is priceless or a
DVD player and their favorite movie(s). This
kind of gift can be appreciated and enjoyed
again and again.
Many residents are on a very fixed income
that limits their ability to enjoy some of life’s
little pleasures. Gift certificates make
wonderful gifts and allow the resident to
enjoy special times without the financial
worry. Some suggestions include gift
certificates for the beauty or barber shop, or
how about a gift certificate to the Snack Bar.
Consider making a gift baskets filled with
useful items the resident would enjoy such as
SOCIAL SERVICES
Sympathy:
We extend our sincere sympathy
to the family and friends of Robert
Hansen and Dave Musfeldt.
They will be missed at the Plaza.
Returned Home:
We are pleased that Ken Wieland was
able to return to his home.
The staff joins in wishing him
continued good health.
a magazine subscription, large print books or
word search puzzles, a magnifying glass,
favorite perfume or cologne, non-slip socks,
or hand lotion. If your loved one does not
have any dietary restrictions, include their
favorite foods, candies or home cooked
treats.
These are just a few ideas to get everyone
thinking. If you have any questions or
would like additional ideas for a certain
resident, please feel free to contact me. We
look forward to sharing the holidays with
many of you and remember that our door is
always open and the coffee is always on!

RAGBRAI made a quick stop in Manning this year. Many residents sat
on the front porch on the morning of July 23rd to watch and greet the
over 20,000 bikers who passed thru town. Bikers from
everywhere stopped to say “Hi” to our residents. We
had people from California, Maryland, Missouri, Hawaii, North Carolina,
Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Georgia and even from Puerto Rico!
ADMINISTRATOR With Christmas around the corner I just
want to remind everyone to refrain from
bringing in live Christmas trees or any
arrangement or wreath that has real pine tree
needles or branches. We are not able to have
these in the facility due to the fire codes.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

Administrator
Resident Right of the Month (An explanation of rights for every Plaza resident)
Resident Rights: The resident has a right to
a dignified existence, self-determination,
and communication with and access to
persons and services inside and outside the
facility, including those specified.
(1) A facility must treat each resident with
respect and dignity and care for each
resident in a manner and in an
environment that promotes maintenance
or enhancement of his or her quality of
life, recognizing each resident’s
individuality. The facility must protect
and promote the rights of the resident.
(2) The facility must provide equal access to
quality care regardless of diagnosis,
severity of condition, or payment source.
A facility must establish and maintain
identical policies and practices regarding
transfer, discharge, and the provision of
services under the State plan for all
residents regardless of payment source.
HAPPY FALL!! The grass still looks nice
and green and the temperatures are perfect
so hopefully we will have a beautiful fall.
We recently had a change in our medical
director. Dr. Bella left her practice here at
MRHC to move and be closer to her family.
We now have Dr. Luong who will be coming
to the Plaza monthly for our QAPI meetings
and to see residents. He will work closely
with Courtney Rupiper, PA to provide
quality medical care to our residents for both
their routine visits and when they have acute
illnesses. Nancy Danner, PA who has been a
provider here at the Plaza for many years
will be retiring soon also. She will be
working with Courtney to transition care of
her residents over the next few weeks.
Courtney has been at the Plaza on a weekly
basis for quite some time now so most of our
residents have seen her and have gotten to
know her already. We wish Nancy all the
best, she will be missed!
You might have already filled out your
influenza vaccination forms and returned
them, but if you have not, the time to do this
is now!! We want to get all of our influenza
vaccinations done early to provide the
residents with the best protection from the
flu. As always, we recommend you get
yours early also. It is important as a family
member or frequent visitor to keep yourself
healthy and prevent illnesses from being
brought into the facility.
Welcome:
Deanna Hagedorn, Ivan Opperman
and Rosie Vollstedt
We hope you enjoy your stay!!
ACTIVITIES
Hello to all from the Activity Department! As
we move into fall and the holiday season, this
is the time of the year that we at the Plaza
shift gears and focus on spending more time
indoors. We have truly enjoyed the new Plaza
van this summer as we took weekly trips
around the community as well as the
countryside and surrounding communities. It’s
so neat to get everyone buckled in and hear
their discussion on where they want to go for
the day! We hope to have several nice days
yet this fall to continue getting out and about.
We will once again give out our homemade
popcorn balls to trick or treaters on Sunday,
October 28th from 3-6 pm, so be sure to stop
by the Plaza and get one! We are also looking
forward to participating in the Main Street
Trick or Treat event on Wednesday, October
31st from 4-5 pm. So kids please stop in the
Plaza lobby and get your treats!
Please join us at the Rummage/Bake Sale on
Tuesday, November 20th from 2-3 pm for
some fun bargains and home baked goods for
your Thanksgiving gatherings! There will also
be some gift items for sale to purchase for you
loved ones for the holidays!
And last but not least to round out the 2018
events….Please do plan attend our Family
Christmas Open House on Thursday,
December 13th at 7 pm in the Plaza Dining
Room. Be sure to bring a plate of goodies to
share and a gift for your loved one. You may
also send a gift for them to open if you are not
able to attend.
You can now view the newsletter and monthly
calendar on our website by going to
www.mrhcia.com and opening the Plaza link.
We have another thing we need your help
with. If you bring clothes for your family
could you please take them to the nurse’s
station. We will then put them in a clear
bag and put the resident name on the bag
so staff can label the items. By bringing
the clothes to us first for labeling it is less
likely that they will get lost or placed in
someone else’s room. Thanks for you
help.
Check us our on facebook at
www.facebook.com/
ManningRegionalHealthcar Center.
Just a reminder, be sure to use our e-mail
address to stay in touch. Several residents
have used e-mail to hear from relatives afar
and also share photos. The address is

As we approach the holiday season many families are faced with the sometimes difficult question of
whether to bring their loved one home for a visit. Many caregivers would love to bring their elderly
loved one home for a few hours, or even overnight. But when is it a good idea, and when are you
better off just visiting at the nursing home?
Every situation is a little different, so it is important to look at every angle. Do you have adequate
transportation to accommodate a wheelchair or mobility concerns, is your home environment
accessible or are there health concerns including Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia that could
influence a successful visit? These are just a few of the concerns that you need to be aware of
including incontinence care and your ability to comfortably provide this kind of intimate care. If your
loved one has these or other needs that you can’t confidently meet at home, taking them out of the
nursing home is not in their best interest.
Taking a trip outside of the facility can be physically and mentally exhausting for some elderly. It is
important to look at the health of your loved one. There are times when a trip outside of the nursing
home can set a frail elderly person back for days or even weeks. If this is the case with your loved
one, the joy of a family visit can be offset by the serious toll it can take on your loved ones health.
Something else to consider is if your loved one will be devastated when it is time to return to the
nursing home. Every nursing home resident adjusts to their new living situation differently. Some
are very accepting and have no problem understanding their need to be in a nursing home and
others never seem to adjust. In many of these cases there is some form of dementia as well that
interferes with their ability to understand the need to return to the facility. When the trauma of
returning to the nursing home is worse than the pleasure of a home visit, it is best to forgo the
visit.
For those residents and families faced with Alzheimer’s or dementia there are many things to
consider before taking your loved one outside the facility. Many times with a change of environment,
large crowds or lots of noise, there will be increased confusion, anxiety and possible agitation with
behaviors. If your loved one has a dementing illness and has adjusted to where they are living, you
may want to consider coming to the nursing home for a visit rather than taking them out of their
familiar surroundings.
We encourage our families to take their loved ones out whenever possible; however it is important to
evaluate each situation before a commitment is made. It is also important to visit with the nurses
prior to any visit to make sure there aren’t any medical concerns, to get a physician’s order for an
overnight stay if necessary, and to allow them time to get medication, supplies, etc. ready prior to
leaving the facility.
If you feel like it is not in the best interest of your loved one to leave the nursing home, we
welcome families and friends to stop by any time. We do have a large meeting room that is
available for families to check out for larger gatherings, as well as the lobby, dining room and
center street lounge for smaller groups. To check out the meeting room, you can contact me or
DeEtte Grabill, Activity Director. If you have any questions or concerns about an upcoming visit or
outing, please feel free to contact me at 712-655-8158 or one of our nurses at 712-655-8125.
