The Lyons Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to our amazing town. Nestled in the foothills of northern Colorado, Lyons is known as the Double Gateway to the Rockies thanks to our unique location and natural beauty. When you come to Lyons as a visitor or as a new resident, you’ll quickly fall in love with our restaurants, shops, festivals, and beautiful parks. We may be a bit biased, but we think that you’ll find treasures in our little town that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. From tubing and whitewater kayaking right in the middle of town in the beautiful St. Vrain river, to world-class hiking, biking, and fishing, to old-fashioned community events, intimate summer concerts in Sandstone Park, and internationally-renowned music festivals at Planet Bluegrass - it’s all here in Lyons.

While we are a small mountain town, our business community is vibrant and growing. Our businesses work together to build and sustain a strong local economy. We take pride in our home-grown coffee shops, the delicious and organic food in our small grocery markets, our artist and music studios, antique stores, gift shops, casual and fine dining, top-ranked schools, our quaint museum, and more. Walk along Main Street, High Street, and Broadway to explore what Lyons has to offer - you may end up full of great food, drink, and collectibles, but we promise you won’t be disappointed.

We are so fortunate to live in this little intersection of mountain and river paradise, but sometimes... living in paradise has its costs. Lyons discovered this in September, 2013 as our beautiful St. Vrain river swelled and flooded our town. We watched as the river washed through whole neighborhoods, destroyed our roads and infrastructure, and created “islands” within our town. Most of us sadly evacuated for several months as the town government, FEMA, the National Guard, and our utility partners worked feverishly to rebuild enough for us to come home. Recovering from a natural disaster takes time, hard work, money, and most importantly, resiliency. We may have become overly familiar with shovels and sand bags, but around here, we say “Lyons, Co. We’ve Got Grit!” Join us in our ongoing recovery efforts by volunteering some of your time and talents and by patronizing our hard-working businesses. Visit the Redstone Museum to learn more about the history of Lyons, and our recent historic flood.

On behalf of the Lyons Area Chamber of Commerce and our members, I welcome you to our special town as a daytripper, wedding guest, or new neighbor.

Lyons is located at the confluence of the North and South St. Vrain Rivers. And at the intersection of two canyons bearing the same names; twenty miles east of Rocky Mountain National Park; 13 miles northwest of Boulder; 9 miles west of Longmont.

About 2,000 people live within the town and several thousand additional neighbors live close by in the canyons and on the foothills of unincorporated Boulder County.

The climate is unbelievably mild. As the locals say, it’s about five degrees cooler than surrounding areas in the summer and about five degrees warmer in the winter. Summer breezes coming down

the canyons and winter warmth emanating from heat-absorbing sandstone cliffs give Lyons a uniquely temperate micro-climate.

Lyons’ elevation is 5,374 feet above sea level. We’re also 8,885 feet below the summit of nearby Longs Peak.

In the 30-mile north/south span between Boulder and Loveland only four canyons have roads that permit access to the High Country. Two of them funnel traffic right through Lyons, which is located dead center between Loveland and Boulder. Traffic on Main Street and Broadway, heading to and from the High Country, averages on an annual basis 15,000 cars a day – with the heaviest loads on summer weekends.

In addition to tourists, this traffic flow includes a daily migratory stream of drivers who live in the mountains above Lyons and travel to and from employment and other activities in Denver and other nearby population centers.

Every town has hallmarks, some of ours are: every summer baby eagles hatch in the cliffs within town and learn to fly over our rooftops; in the spring a herd of elk descends from the surrounding hills; there is a Community Foundation to help our generous people engage in responsible philanthropy; a comprehensive

health delivery system consists of a fully-staffed local clinic, a pharmacy, physical therapists and practitioners of non-traditional medicine – all of whom collaborate enthusiastically to protect the community’s health.

And then there are the community volunteer groups. Such as The Lyons Garden Club, formed in 2008 by three local women who wanted to beautify the town of Lyons through the power of flowers. They first began with a prominent spot in town known as the Mushroom Planter (since renamed to the Butterfly Planter). These intrepid women cleaned up the planter and enhanced it with plants from their own gardens. From this humble beginning, the Lyons Garden Club has quickly grown in size and has since transformed many of the public garden areas in the town of Lyons.

Another, Lyons Volunteers, formed under the efforts of the Town of Lyons and Edward Kean after the September 2013 floods. Its purpose is to bring volunteers and resources together to rebuild Lyons. Every Saturday, Lyons Volunteers meets at 9 am at Lyons Depot, where they organize, equip, and “deploy” Lyons Volunteer teams into the Lyons area to assist with pre-organized volunteer work.

The Lyons Area Chamber of Commerce is a volunteer non-profit organization which represents over a diverse membership of businesses and individuals from the local and surrounding area. Our Mission Statement is to support an economically-diverse business environment and enhance quality of life by promoting the economic, social, cultural, and environmental sustainability of the greater Lyons Area.

One of the benefits to member businesses is this LyonsFirst Guide Book. Each member business in Lyons is listed in the business directory at the end of the Guide Book, and member businesses enjoy advertising opportunities throughout the book. For this 2016-2017 printing, we are fortunate to be able to leverage grant funding from the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT) to include all Lyons businesses in the directory, as well as distribute the LyonsFirst Guide Book over a wider area in the Front Range region. The Guide Book can also be accessed online at our website, www.lyons-colorado.com.

The Chamber of Commerce is an excellent resource to learn about the community of Lyons, shopping, dining, and enjoying all that our town has to offer. The Chamber supports members by sponsoring events, fundraisers, ribbon cutting, feature articles in the local newspapers, support with press releases, and networking at our socials. Through our presence on the internet and Facebook, we inform the public about our business member and community events and local non-profits. We provide a first stop for inquiries about our community by local area residents and visitors alike. You can find us in the Town of Lyons Visitors Center or at www.lyons-colorado.com.

The Lyons Community Foundation (LCF) is the philanthropic cornerstone for Lyons, Colorado. LCF Community Support Grants include projects such as:•public health and human services•education and youth enrichment•parks and recreation•volunteerism•public art, music and cultural events•historic preservation•animal welfare•environmental sustainability, local ecology, and landscape beautification

Ongoing work supports rebuilding, recovery and resiliency efforts focused on human services, parks and recreation and volunteer resources.

The Lyons Regional Library District was created in September, 2013 to build and operate a new library/community resource center. Tax funding for the District was passed on Nov. 4th, 2014. The library district is governed by a separate board of trustees appointed by the Town of Lyons, Boulder County and Larimer County.

Because of the devastating flood in Sept. 2013 the Lyons library is in a temporary location at 405 Main Street.

The Lyons Regional Library District Foundation has been established and approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization to accept tax-deductible contributions for the new and up-coming library and community resource center. Contributions, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000 due to a generous pledge by a local family, may be sent to Lyons Regional Library District Foundation, PO Box 619, Lyons, CO 80540

The library in Lyons has taken many forms in the past and will again in the future. It has been and will continue to be an integral part of the Lyons area. Libraries are no longer just places to read and take out books, although promoting literacy is still a key function. Our library is committed to adapting to the community’s needs now and in the future by being flexible and providing a broad range of services. Regardless of the form the materials take (from clay tablets to smart electronic devices) the core values of a library remained throughout history.

The core values of most libraries, and ours is no exception, include:• Protecting and promoting intellectual freedom - Intellectual freedoms include the right

of library patrons to read, seek information, and speak freely as guaranteed by our nation’s First Amendment. This remains true even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those viewpoints to all. This means libraries are constantly fighting censorship of materials so that everyone is able to read materials of their own choice, listen to what they want, and voice opinions freely. Our society must stand against groups or governments that seek to limit our freedoms. This is still an issue as books and materials are still being challenged and banned. According to the American Library Association (ALA) a challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library of school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. A banned book is a book that has been removed. Challenging and banning books is a practice that is alive and well in the United States and the entire world. Libraries advocate for and strive to protect your freedoms

• The privacy of our patrons - We don’t care what you read, what music you listen to, or

what you watch. It’s none of our business and it is certainly nobody else’s business. When you’ve been in the library, if you’ve been in the library and how long you were doing and what you were doing in the library is only your business. We protect your right to privacy. Like a journalists who protect their sources librarians protect the privacy of our patrons. We don’t keep information on what you read or watch and put the patron in control of the history of your materials. We also are careful to delete and protect your electronic privacy as well. On electronic devices privacy can never be guaranteed but we do strive to erase personal information and documents so that patrons can feel secure coming to the library to apply for jobs, write love letters, or check their social media.

• Rationalism - Free and equal access to information provides people with the ability to make decisions based on evidence and reason. This is important in every aspect of our lives as we socialize, vote, decide what careers to follow, where to live, and conduct ourselves in general. While we are all humanly emotional and opinionated library resources have the ability to provide information which is the basis of rational thought and behavior. This information could take the form of scholarly articles from academic databases or a book or movie that gives us new directions of thought through the power of storytelling.

• Informing and Empowering the electorate in a Democracy - In a passionately engaged area

with so many important issues both local and national it is hard to stay informed. We exist to provide information-based materials so that patrons may stay informed and feel like a valid part of the democratic process. This may be providing access to a recent article in a national magazine or a local newspaper. Or providing the biography of a politician. Or this could mean simply showing someone where to find a valid copy of our Constitution on the internet. The library is a political-free zone. While we are here to provide information we do not provide opinions to our patron population. The library strives to be a calm and judgment free zone where people can seek what they need to empower themselves to participate in our democratic processes.

• Literacy - This is a huge determinant of later well-being for individuals, and ultimately for the economy and for community social and economic life. Our library strives to provide opportunities for literacy in our community regardless of anyone’s age or ability. This includes our English-as-a-second language population. We have patrons whose original languages include, for example, French, Russian and Spanish. There are many more languages and cultures represented in this area as well.

For current library hours, events and programs at the library, or to sign up for a library account, visit Lyons Regional Library website at lyons.colibraries.org. And like us on Facebook (Lyons Regional Library). We even have a Twitter account at @lyonslibrary.

The Town’s old schoolhouse, built in 1881, was originally one room. Soon the town boomed, due to the quarry industry started by Edward Lyon and associates, and it was expanded to four rooms and two stories. Its facade is an excellent example of the best of local stonemasonry and the durability of the local red sandstone. The Lyons Historical Society saved it from the wrecking ball, restored it, and opened it in 1979 as the town’s Redstone Museum. It is maintained as a three-way lease between the St. Vrain School District, the Town of Lyons, and the Lyons Historical Society.

The collection depicts the history of the Lyons area in displays, photos, and genealogy. Visitors can walk the three aisles of black and white photographs, depicting Lyons in the early 1900s. Special exhibits and collections include arrowheads, insulators, old bank teller cage, household items, business furniture and tools. Archives include family history, graduation lists, cemetery lists, oral history, and town business, including area parks, clubs, commerce and more. It offers for sale old books, local area history books and DVDs, plus a small gift shop. Free admission; donations appreciated. Open daily June 1 thru Sept. 29. Hours are Mondays thru Saturdays 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sundays 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. 340 High Street. For more information call 303-823-5271 or 303-823-5225.

The museum is undergoing exterior restoration work funded by the State Historical Fund, The Town of Lyons, The St. Vrain School District, various fundraisers, and donations. Donations can be mailed to Lyons Historical Society, dba Lyons Redstone Museum, PO Box 9, Lyons, CO 80540. For more information, call LaVern at 303 823 5925 or email [email protected].

Over the years local stone was used by local people to build local buildings. That’s natural and logical. It is only part of the story – the obvious part. The rest of the story is astonishing: stone from Quarry Town, Colorado was used to construct major public buildings and elite private residences in New York, Boston, Washington DC and other big cities in the East! The sandstone our quarrymen have been pulling from the earth for over a century has been used on fine, enduring buildings throughout the world. The reason? Unlike much of the sandstone quarried elsewhere on this planet, our stone has distinct advantages: it is very hard, fine-grained, structurally strong and exceptionally durable.

Contractors and architects know Lyons Sandstone is inherently beautiful, maintenance free and incredibly long-lasting. It can be cut and split to incredibly close tolerance and requires no surface finish to protect against the weather. This makes it the ideal construction and decorative material to use indoors and out on buildings designed for a long lifespan.

Local quarryman Mike Loukonen compares them to more transitory commercial buildings and says, “Colleges and churches are prime customers for Lyons stone. Those institutions have a deep sense of history. So they build their buildings to last.” That’s why Lyons Sandstone was recently used to build two monuments that will remain on

the forefront of our nation’s consciousness for generations: the 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial in New York and at the memorial at the site of the 9/11 crash of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In addition to its presence in historic buildings, throughout Lyons you will see our rock used creatively in many ways, including building blocks, retaining walls, patios, sidewalks, lawn furniture and public artwork of all sizes distributed throughout the town.

Much of the sandstone art was created and donated by the Vasquez family and Blue Mountain Stone. In a 2007 interview, Manny Vasquez said the most fun he has from the business is to drive by completed projects that have artfully integrated Lyons Sandstone with architecture, like the 29th Street Mall in Boulder.

Speaking of public art made from sandstone he said, “After all the years of hard work, we are now able to give back to our community and make our little town a little nicer to look at.”

Lyons Sandstone was first recognized as construction material in 1873, when Chester Smead, an early settler, quarried the first rock from what is now Meadow Park. He shipped it to Longmont for use as a sidewalk to connect Central School with the Congregational Church.

Quarrying remained a sideline business for the early

farmers. Then, Edward S. Lyon purchased some land to raise crops and cattle. Examining the sandstone outcroppings on his property, he concluded that rock could be more valuable than cabbage and beef. Within a year Farmer Lyon had become Quarryman Lyon. His rock crop generated such high demand that the Denver, Utah and Pacific Railroad opened national distribution channels by installing a new track from Lyons to the Longmont railhead.

Soon the quarry business was booming. Lyons Sandstone began to pave sidewalks in rapidly developing Eastern and Midwestern cities. Our community was on its way to becoming Quarry Town, Colorado.

By 1890 hundreds of miners worked for seven different quarry companies in the Lyons valley. Our unique red stone was on its way to being used all over the world. Lyons quickly developed into one of the largest stone producing areas in the United States. Other quarries named Beech Hill and Nolan were opened northeast of town.

Today the Lyons stone industry continues to be a small group of family owned quarries and stone yards. Most concentrate on wholesale distribution.

Some have been handed down through several generations. Loukonen Brothers Stone, the oldest of

the group, was founded by John Gust Loukonen, a tanner by trade, who crossed the Atlantic from Finland in 1890. Stopping first in Minnesota, he learned of the stone business in Colorado, and moved to Beech Hill. In 1895, Loukonen purchased the quarries on Beech Hill for $10,000, an enormous sum in those days.

Nevertheless, he and his quarry were so productive that he was able to pay for his investment in under 2 years. Today the family business is operated by grandchildren Mike, Dean, Ken, Kathy, Cynthia and John.

In the 1920s, recently invented concrete emerged as a construction alternative, undercutting the popularity of Lyons Sandstone. According to Dean Loukonen, “Cement nearly blew out the bottom of the stone business from the 20s until the post-war building boom of the 40s. Then things went back to normal.” Even with that temporary slump, the stone business is the historic lifeblood of this community. Referring to his father and uncle, the legendary Leonard Loukonen and his brother Reino, Mike recalled, “My dad and uncle always looked out for the working people. During tough winters, when there was little activity in the quarry, they carried many of them financially. In fact, a number of the stone companies and stoneworkers in Lyons got their start from my father and uncle. Our family traditions seemed to become community traditions.”

The brothers acknowledge the industry is changing. There was a time when each quarry shipped trailer load after trailer load each day to construction sites throughout the nation and the world. Now the emphasis may be shifting to lower volume for more decorative and refined uses. Lyons quarrymen, long known for their innovation, are beginning to apply technologies long used on marble and granite. They intend for this approach to generate new uses of Lyons Sandstone with a greater range of uses and even higher perceived value.

The tradition continues.

By Charles KeimRed rock formations surrounding Lyons are the remains of ancient sand dune deposits. This massive

legacy of prehistoric times is named the Lyons Formation. Because of its utility and enormous financial value, in both a physical and economic sense the roots of Lyons are set deep in sandstone. Nature structured the local stone formation in layers. That makes it possible for the quarrymen of Lyons to easily extract slabs of varying thickness for use as building material.

Sandstone from the Lyons Formation built many of the most notable and historically significant buildings in town.

For over a century the Lyons’ Hallmark has been local stone erected by local craftsmen – a combination of geologic material and superb skill for which our community is known.

Demonstrating post-Civil War construction techniques, fourteen notable structures are situated within the town’s borders; the remaining four are close by. Originally mercantile buildings, liveries, a dynamite storage shed, an old schoolhouse, residences and a bar or two, their initial purpose evolved into current use and their historic significance grew accordingly. Primarily made of Lyons Sandstone, mostly within walking distance of each other, they are part of Lyons’ everyday life in 2010 just as they were a century ago.

Following are photos and descriptions of historic buildings we regard as timeless tributes to the quarrymen and stonemasons who built, and who continue to build, our community.

Quarry Town, Colorado

Lyons Community Church(1905 Main Street) The little white church on the corner, now in its second century, is not only a place of worship. In recent years is has emerged as a gathering place for meetings, concerts and other community events.

Lyons Schoolhouse, 1881(338 High Street) On the northwest corner of 4th and High (340 High) stands the two-story partly sandstone, 1881 school, used for classes until 1977. A 30’ x 40’ stone building was one of the first projects of Mr. Lyon, the building to serve as school and church.

Dynamite Storage Building, 1890(427 High Street) This small sandstone block building was once used to store dynamite for the quarry workers. During another period a chemical mixture was processed in the building to produce the gas that was piped throughout town to fuel gaslight fixtures.

Bradford Homestead, 1870((South of Lyons) This small homestead, located on the old Bradford farm, was once a stagecoach stop that was well known for its cherries, apples, and beautiful irises. This building is now owned by the town of Lyons.

On April 29,1980, fifteen of the listed sites have been designated by the Colorado Historical Society and the United States Department of the Interior as a Historic District. The shelter house in Meadow Park was recently added, making sixteen. Please respect the owner’s privacy when visiting the historic sites,

view only from the street. For more information visit the Lyons Redstone Museum.

Lyons General Store, 1884(426 High Street) It was originally the home of town founder E.S. Lyon, then became T.J. Thorne’s General Store with a blacksmith and wagon shop located on the east side of the building.

Jensen Home, circa 1890(413 Seward St) This small two story home built from local stone has always been a private residence. Beautiful and unique, it demonstrates the combination of fine craftsmanship and Lyons sandstone.

Montgomery School,1917(Ute Highway (66) and N. 53rd Street) Built in 1917 by the Loukonen and Gross families, this old building has 14-inch thick walls and was used as a school until the 1950s. It is now a private residence.

Old Stone Church, 1894(4th and High Street) Built in 1894 for $3,147 using sandstone quarried from the nearby canyon walls, this was one of the first of Lyons’ landmark buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Crona Building, circa 1895(431 Main Street) Physician E.S. Crona constructed this building to house his family upstairs and his Longs Peak Drug Store on the street level. Renovated in 2009-2010, the original wooden balcony has been replaced by a metal one.

McAllister Saloon, 1881(450 Main Street) Once a popular saloon, the building has served several different uses while still retaining two much loved oval paintings by Newt Thomas, a well known 1890s Lyons artist. Look carefully at the art, carefully preserved on the building’s west wall, and you’ll note a bullet hole in one painting – the result of a gunfight that broke out over a hundred years ago.

Turner-Stevens Building, 1917(401 Main Street) Named after banker Marvin Turner and garage owner C.E. Stevens this building was built in 1917 to house the Bank of Lyons. In 1921, O.J. Ramey became associated with the bank and it became the State Bank of Lyons which operated until 1930s.

The Original Livery, circa 1890(418 High Street) The core of this building was constructed by E.S. Lyon, the founder of Lyons. In the years that followed, subsequent additions and alterations changed its appearance.

Montgomery Home, circa 1890(409 Seward Street) Another unique home built by Lyons stonemasons from sandstone quarried from the hills above town, this building has been a private residence ever since it was constructed.

Chisholm Home, circa 1890(425 Seward Street) Once used as an old blacksmith shop and small residence, the full structure has been converted to living quarters for the current occupant. The building features a highly effective early form of insulation based on logical design – it is constructed with dual stone walls 18 inches thick, with an air pocket between.

Sites Milk House, 1885(4089 Ute Highwy) John Sites, one of the first farmers of the St. Vrain Valley, operated a dairy east of Lyons. His milk production was cooled by spring water that ran right through the milk house into a raspberry patch on the other side of the building. The old Milk House is now on private property.

Lyons Depot, 1881 (430 5th Avenue) This building was the old depot where trains deposited Front Range residents for summer picnics in Lyons’ Meadow Park or for a day’s outing in secluded glens along the river. The depot was also the transfer point for train travelers who then boarded a fleet of old Stanley Steamer autos for trips up the canyon to Estes Park. Currently under restoration due to September 2013 flood. The Shelter House, circa 1930

(Meadow Park) Built using river rock, cement and a wooden frame, the shelter house used by visitors to Meadow Park. During the September 2013 flood, the structure was destroyed.

Lyons’ high profile music venues - Planet Bluegrass and Oskar Blues- may receive most of the public attention, but the real musical treasure of Lyons is behind the scenes: the vibrant community of touring musicians, recording artists, record producers, music business leaders, and fans and residents who share a passion for music of all genres.

Unlike the highly competitive scenes in major cities, the Lyons music community is uniformly welcoming to all musicians. Musicians gather weekly for informal jam sessions - from blues and bluegrass to jazz and folk. Music takes place everywhere in Lyons: on front porches, to concerts in Sandstone Park to Planet Bluegrass’ highly acclaimed Rocky Grass and Folks Festivals each summer.

Lyons produces a wealth of intimate community-oriented concerts, dances, and charity performances in local halls and even private homes. This free sharing of resources cultivates a supportive community that continues to attract new music professionals to town on a regular basis. Sally Van Meter, a Grammy Award-winning slide guitarist (and longtime Lyons resident) says “It’s like the East Village of New York, when all the great poets were living there in the 60s. It almost has that feel because of this great connection we all have to music.” Similarly, a 2011 profile on NPR’s All Things Considered described Lyons as “…a kind of roots music artist’ colony” [that is] quietly becoming the Nashville of the Rockies”. Rolling Stone Magazine wrote, “Lyons is the hottest place to be on a Saturday night in Colorado.”

Wandering into Oskar blues for Tuesday night’s bluegrass jam can be overwhelming: there is a Grammy Award-winning musician at that table; there’s the head of a national booking agency by the window; there are several touring musicians trading songs and tunes in that corner. In another corner, there is an admired instrument builder; standing in the hallway is one of Colorado’s top studio engineers. Even your next-door neighbor is playing Scruggs-style 5-string banjo.

include Planet Bluegrass’ Wildflower Theater, Oskar Blues, Lyons Fork, Local Eat Drink, Smokin’ Daves, Spirit Hound Distillery, The Stone Cup, and one of Lyon’s most treasured intimate venues is High Street Concerts at Rogers Hall, a monthly series of concert events that bring to Lyons rare appearances of high-profile solo artists and bands. All these wonderful venues are within a one-half mile distance, keeping our music scene alive and healthy.

In addition, the Lyons Old-Time Community Dance brings together live bands and professional dance callers during the winter months, and the fifty-eight year old Red Rock Ramblers Square dance club comes together every Saturday evening during the summer.

In early June, the innovative Sounds of Lyons offers music lovers a unique classical music experience in indoor and outdoor settings led by renowned violinist Mintze Wu. Throughout the summer, the Thursday evening Concert In the Park series on the Vasquez stage offers free local artist’ concerts, and the music floats across town on the summer evenings. During the summer-autumn months, thousands of music lovers descend upon Lyons for a week long celebration of both bluegrass and folk music at Planet Bluegrass, featuring a four day instructional camp that ends in a weekend-long festival for both Rocky Grass and Folks Festivals. Lyons is a town that is devoted to the musical arts and places high value on music in the community.

While some visitors might think of us as a quaint little town on the way to Rocky Mountain National Park, Lyons as a town along the Front Range, it is in fact a well-recognized stronghold for an unusually large number of artisans, musicians, composers, writers, and more. As a town, we celebrate them as artists who uniquely contribute to our town, earning Lyons the reputation as one of being artist-celebrated.

Here in Lyons, some of our notable artist neighbors are indeed well known and some not so well known, but to the town it is all the same in terms of the value they add to a town like Lyons. While we can’t name all of them for you, we would like you as our visitor to know a little about them and why the art and music they create makes Lyons a special place to visit.

In Lyons, we celebrate such an diverse artistic community: a husband/wife duo known for photographic essays found in National Geographic, mystery novels set in the Land of Enchantment, and books on Native American culture in America. Another highly respected artisan is a fly rod maker who will handcraft a bamboo fly rod to your custom specifications; each fly rod is a masterpiece of fishing equipment and unique to the art of fly rod making and indeed, a work of fine art. Adding to this, this master craftsman is an author of many best-selling books on fly fishing and has been compared to Mark Twain in his crafting of fishing adventures that go beyond anything one might consider a typical fishing tales book.

Musicians, you ask? We have plenty of musicians

here to suit all your musical yearnings. We boast a world-class classical violinist/composer who each year in Lyons brings together musicians from across the country and puts on a festival that features classical compositions from the past and present.

Another neighbor is a master musician on the resonator slide guitar with a Grammy

Award in possession, also known for writing and directing documentary

film, and as a veteran performer on International and National Festival Stages. More notable musicians in Lyons include

a bassist/ clawhammer-style banjo player who also happens to be a highly respected and singular artist in her own right,

creating original paintings that defy convention. You can

also find among our neighbors an independent singer-songwriter who tours

both nationally and internationally. Even in the aftermath of the flood of September 2013, many of our musicians remain dedicated to living in a town that supports live music. Live music abounds in the town of Lyons; almost every night of the week, you can find great live local music in venues across town and during the summers there are always the music festivals that showcase Bluegrass, Folk and beyond for.

If it is a perfect pale ale you are looking for on a hot afternoon, Lyons boasts one of the most successful independent craft breweries that Food and Wine magazine called one of the “100 Things You’ve Got To Try in 2007”. As well, in the town of Lyons, visitors can spend the day at an independent distillery that specializes in award-winning whiskeys, gins, and

other spirits. If you want to find an artisan-quality one of a kind handmade table, right here in town we have a company born out of the flood of 2013 that custom builds beautiful handmade tables using old barn wood and woods re-purposed from the Lyons flood as a symbol of resilience.

If reading a good novel on the back patio of one of our local restaurants or on your sun porch in the morning is your thing, Lyons touts a serious organic gardener turned mystery writer, whose murder mysteries always seem to take place in the garden. Lyons celebrates independent photographers and documentary filmmakers as well, with a great custom photography business, and even a local film festival during our summer season. Right here in town, there is a nationally recognized quilt shop that specializes in handmade quilting. You can find the work of local handcrafted Ceramic pottery artists, jewelry makers, and more in most every artisan shop in our downtown shops. Lyons is recognized as having many resident painters who are inspired by the mountain west landscape and the natural environment habitat. One long-established landscape painter who describes herself as “...as old as my tongue and a little older than my teeth” captures the unparalleled beauty of the Lyons landscape in watercolor paintings that

challenge us not to feel the beauty of the natural world.

Sculpture is everywhere in Lyons. You can experience sculptures on our Main Street Downtown business district and other areas as well. One celebrated local artist in Lyons creates large-scale, tower mounted, and wind-powered kinetic artworks that have been featured at the 2014/2015 Outdoors International Kinetic Art Show. In terms of community commitment to create ongoing works of art, many of our local residents, both artist and non-artist alike came together to create the Clarifier Project, a large free-form art mosaic created over a shell of a former waste-water treatment tank. This is just one way the Lyons community expresses its interest and commitment to keeping our community full of art and artists of all genres.

All of these talented artisans live within the Lyons and surrounding area community, and are active in promoting a healthy art and music scene. One thing is clear: Lyons holds a true commitment to its artist community neighbors. Acknowledgment of the importance of art in any small town ensures that the small town can continue to thrive and this recognition is unmatched in adding to the positive quality of life in a town such as Lyons.

f loodSeptember 12, 2013It has been a few years since Lyons community was jolted awake by sirens in the darkness. At sunrise, we discovered Mother Nature had taken a swipe at our town, leaving behind mud and broken hopes.

During the next few months, residents stood up and began to rebuild. Along the way, we thanked our neighbors and friends for their generosity, both near and far.

We celebrated when we overcame challenges and cried when we could not accomplish what was dear to our hearts.

Today the parks, bridges, roads, and homes are being reimagined. And Lyons is resilient.

Lyons is still in the process of repairing the damage from the flood. If you would like to donate your time, please visit www.lyonsvolunteers.org. If you would like to make a monetary donation visit www.lyonscf.org.

vistasLyons is well known for access to wilderness areas that begin at the town borders: Roosevelt

National Forest, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Heil and Hall Ranches. Outdoor recreation is enormously popular in Lyons. Residents of Apple Valley Road, who

continually avoid bikers from both directions, including those with babies in biker carriages, have even considered re-naming the street “Apple Valley Bike Trail.” Folks on mountain bikes have exciting challenges on the trails at Hall and Heil Ranches.

Hikers are continuously rewarded with magnificent views throughout town and the area’s extensive trail systems. One of our favorite trail is the Button Rock Trail. The trail spans a broad valley connecting the Button Rock Preserve with Hall Ranch in Lyons. To reach the trail, you must hike Button Rock Preserve’s Sleepy Lion Loop Trail (from the west), or Hall Ranch’s Nighthawk Trail or Bitterbrush-Nelson Loop Trails (from the east).
