Dear Neighbours,

Here it is - issue 14, and I hope by the time you’re

reading this spring will definitely be in the air. I’ll

start by saying a big thank you to the volunteers

at Lossie Youth Café for delivering the winter

edition in some horrendous snow. Hopefully the

weather will have been kinder to the Senior

Citizens Bus Trust Walking Group who have

undertaken this issue’s delivery.

There are more advertisers for you to spot again.

The campaign to save RAF Lossiemouth is still in

full swing after the disappointing news that an

announcement will not be made until May. A

campaign song has been released - ‘Born to Fly’

sung by local girl Karla Bernardi. All the details

are on page 5, with an update from Moray Task

Force on page 6. For the song to hit the charts it

needs to get as many downloads as possible, so

please, please make the effort to get online and

download it (and if you’re not computer savvy ask

someone who is!).

Whatever your interests there’s lots on over the

next couple of months. On 26 March there’s a

crafts and skills workshop at Moray Steiner

School (page 18). It’s the James Square May Fair

on 21 May (page 26) and the Caerphilly Ladies’

Choir and Moray Male Voice Gospel Choir are

coming to the Town Hall on 30 May for a concert

in aid of Help for Heroes (page 10). Then on 9

April it’s the Highland Warriors 2 full contact

Muai Thai boxing show - full details are on page

16. And check out Outfit Moray on page 25 for

ideas of how to keep the kids entertained during

the Easter holidays.

If you have any community news and events for

the Summer Issue (Jun/Jul/Aug) then be sure to

get in touch.

I know I ask this every time, but please show your

support for our local businesses, and wherever

possible Shop Local, Shop Lossie!

Enjoy the spring ………………… Nicky Slater

The campaign to save RAF Lossiemouth was started

after the announcement by the Government that RAF

Kinloss was to close. The Chairman of the campaign

is Mr David Stewart, a local Councillor. No decision

was made immediately regarding Lossie but many

people feared the worst and so the campaign was set

up to try to persuade the Westminster Government not

to close Lossie by pointing out the serious social and

economic repercussions on the Moray area. There

have been rallies, one of which was attended by the

First Minister Alec Salmond and attracted a crowd of

over 7000, and even a 1200 mile round trip on the

‘Battle Bus’ to Downing Street where members of the

campaign handed in a petition with over 32,000

signatures.

The campaign committee came up with the idea of

releasing a song in support of the campaign. When

this was reported in the Sun newspaper a number of

artists approached the committee with ideas for songs

and singers. Because of this the committee decided to

choose three songs and post these on their official

website. They then asked the public to vote for their

favourite via the website. The voting lasted from just

before Christmas until 12 January 2011 and attracted

hundreds of votes. The winning song, Born To Fly,

received 55% of the votes and was written especially

for the campaign by Fife singer/songwriters Grant

Tyrie and Kat McDonald of the band Little Buddah,

and sung by Inverness girl Karla Bernardi. A video

for the song was produced by Anna McPherson of

Recite Films which was screened at the meeting along

with a video message of support from Grey’s

Anatomy star Kevin McKidd, who was born in

Elgin. This was followed by a special screening of

‘The Dambusters’ and concluded with Karla

performing the winning song live. Karla is a well

known singer in the area and performs regularly in and

around the Highlands and Islands. She decided to give

her time to this project after hearing of the

devastation closure of these bases would cause to

the area. Indeed, she travelled up and down from

Inverness to Fife in some of the worst weather in

many years to get the song finalized for the

campaign.

Karla has been working on the Scottish pub/club

circuit for a

number of

years. She

has received

some

attention over

the past

couple of

years from

people

involved in the music industry and has worked with

a number of well known producers including John

McLaughlin. She supported Keith Jack, runner up

on BBC's Any Dream Will Do, which consisted of

17 venues throughout the UK from Inverness

to London. She was only recently in London

working with Simon Ellis who, as you will know,

was involved with Britney Spears’ Circus tour last

year. She has recorded a single, Never Miss A

Beat, written and produced by him, and hopes to

release this on the back of Born To Fly. In the

meantime she is very proud of the song she has

recorded for the campaign and is looking forward

to performing it in as many venues as possible.

The song, Born To Fly, is available for download

on itunes at a price of 79p. It can be found under

the name Karla Bernardi. All proceeds from the

sale of the song will be going back to the campaign

funds to help keep the fight going. The video is

currently showing on YouTube and has already had

nearly 2000 hits.

At the time of going to print these excerpts were taken from the latest bulletins from Moray Task Force. For up-to-date information see www.moraytaskforce.com/latest-action

Bulletin 19 - 9 February 2011 Uncertainty about the Future of Bases Continues. Moray Task Force again raised the impact of the ongoing uncertainty about the future of the RAF in Moray with the UK Government after Moray house price figures were released last week. The number of properties sold in Moray during the last quarter of 2010 dropped by ore than 23% compared to the same period in 2009. Statistics released by Registers of Scotland showed the drop was the largest seen anywhere in Scotland. Members of the group said the decision to make the announcement after the 5th May prolonged the uncertainty for the communities in and around RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Kinloss, and areas including housing, hospitality and tourism were already feeling the effects. Task force joint chairman Calum MacPherson said the task force had been highlighting the housing situation and other areas of the local economy to the UK Government for a number of weeks. He said, “The statistics about house sales substantiate the submissions we made to the Ministry of Defence and Treasury officials before Christmas. The uncertainty which began when the Strategic Defence and Security Review as announced in October 2010 has, in recent months, manifested itself in very real and damaging ways. Bulletin 20 - 15 February 2011 All Change. Prime Minister David Cameron has told Scotland‟s First Minister that RAF Lossiemouth and Leuchars are not head to head in a fight for survival.

At the meeting at No 10 on Monday the Prime Minister told Mr Salmond that all stations were being examined on their own merits. The First Minister Commented, “I‟m pleased that the Prime Minister confirms that this is not, as the junior minister indicated, a battle between Lossie and Leuchars. I have to take him at his word. That will give heart to the campaigners.” Bright Children School children from Hythehill and St Gerardine‟s primaries braved the elements on Valentine‟s night to ask David Cameron for a brighter future by saving RAF Lossiemouth. The children released Chinese lanterns to send their message to Downing Street. Lossiemouth Councillor and Moray Task Force Member David Stewart said the event was a success and that local people were delighted to be keeping up the fight for the base. The young campaigners also sent homemade cards to Mr Cameron and Defence Secretary Liam Fox.

Scotland’s biggest population count, the 2011 Census, takes place on Sunday 27 March and everyone must be included.

The census is the only survey to ask us all the same questions at the same time. It is how people across Scotland send a message to government and businesses about the services they and their community need, now and in the future.

The census paints a picture of Scotland as a nation and through its communities. This reliable measure of the size of the population and the statistics about our circumstances – including age, health, accommodation – that are derived from it are used to help target and deliver billions of pounds worth of public services. The census informs the planning of health, education and transport services as well as business investment and retail opportunities throughout Scotland.

Your census questionnaire will be delivered by Sunday 27 March. You can fill it in as soon as it arrives provided your answers cover the people living or staying with you on the night of 27 March.

Personal information is kept confidential for 100 years.

A „Help for Heroes‟ Charity Concert will be given by the Caerphilly Ladies‟ Choir (South Wales) and The Moray Male Voice Gospel Choir, at Lossiemouth Town Hall on Monday 30 May at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and are available from The Hopeman Choir, Lossiemouth Library and Buckleys Newsagent. Alternatively get in touch with The Lossie Local on 815328 for ticket details.

Caerphilly Ladies’ Choir

The choristers of Caerphilly Ladies' Choir share a love of singing. The choir has a broad repertoire, and is equally at home singing Welsh melodies, spirituals, operatic choruses, sacred music, popular songs and songs from the stage musicals.

Caerphilly Ladies‟ Choir performs around fifteen concerts a year, all for worthwhile causes. Venues vary from small churches and community centres to large halls and cathedrals. The choir has performed at Caerphilly Castle, Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, St David's Hall, the Wales Millennium Centre and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the Albert Hall in London, the Millennium Dome in London and at York Minster.

The choir enjoys an annual tour in May, visiting towns and cities in Wales and England. Usually the tour includes performing with a male voice choir, and we have performed with choirs from York, Hull, Bournemouth, Chester, Torquay and Bideford.

The choir has also toured abroad, in France, Germany and Spain.

A few weeks ago, I stood at the harbour

and watched a piece of Lossiemouth

heritage sail away for the last time.

It was sad, but sadder still that only a

handful of people were there to bid

farewell to the Vigilant as she departed on

her final voyage. Sandy Smith’s boat was

the last ‘traditional’ and truly

Lossiemouth-based fishing boat to operate

from the harbour, sharing its time

between Lossiemouth and Lochinver.

At a time when Lossiemouth is fighting to

retain an RAF presence, knowing only too

well the devastation that will ensue should

we fail in that fight, it was sadder still that

an industry on which Lossiemouth

prospered should just slip away in such a

silent manner.

There was always some fishing from

Lossiemouth, but as an industry it really

took off around 1860, when the harbour

was built at the end of the then new

railway link, used primarily for the export

of whisky.

The railway was responsible for the rapid

expansion of the Lossie fishing fleet,

which now had a fast means of

transporting its catch overnight to the

lucrative markets in the south.

Open decked sailboats operating from

close inshore was the main fishing

method, then as demand increased so the

boats became much larger, more so as the

steam engine was brought into use.

Drift netting came into use at the turn of

the 20th Century, the Lossie fleet ranging

as far as Lowestoft and Douglas in search

of herring, their catches finding markets

on the continent as well as in the UK.

From around the time of the First World

War there was a decline in the industry,

but Lossie Fowk are nothing if not

inventive - and having seen seine-net

methods used by Danish boats the Lossie

fishermen developed the method to their

own needs with spectacular success.

By 1939 Lossie had the largest seine

fishing fleet in the country. So important

had the fishing industry become, that year

the Lossiemouth fleet became the subject

of an award-winning film made by J

Evans Gordon. The film, recording

preparations before, during and after a

catch by a Lossiemouth seine boat, won

the best film award at the Scottish

Amateur Film Festival in 1940.

It is said that Mr Gordon took a house in

Lossiemouth for several weeks during

The Vigilant’s Final Voyage by Stuart Crowther

filming – a clip of the film can be seen on

the national archive website at

http://ssa.nls.uk/film.cfm?fid=1595.

After the second war there was another

period of unprecedented success for

Lossiemouth’s fishermen, as they used

larger powered boats that allowed them to

cast their nets further to the West and

North.

Soon however the warning signs started to

appear, as wave after wave of restrictions

on catches were implemented. Fishing

ports around Scotland were being hit

hard, very hard – and many simply did

not survive. Subsequently, in terms of

fishing at least, the Lossie Harbour, in

terms of fishing at least, became a shadow

of its former self.

The Vigilant had a better life than many

modern boats, having survived for 42

years, 36 of them skippered by Sandy

Smith.

A town like Lossiemouth will of course

always find ways to change and adapt, the

loss of the fishing industry saw

Lossiemouth develop in the leisure

industry, with the added

advantage of having a

major military presence.

Part of that is now also

under threat, but while we

might fear for the future we

should also learn from the

past, as one door closes

others, we trust, will open.

The First Invention

Based on archaeological excavations around the world, scientists and historians have conjectured what the first invention of primitive man might have been. Along with the wheel, suggestions include everyday implements such as the hammer, maybe a simple lever or of course weapons! It‟s also suggested men realised in making their inventions that they could use the Laws of Physics to their advantage, even if they didn‟t know the science behind them. Neither do we know where the first invention was made. Ancient Mesopotamia? China? Perhaps in what is now Egypt? It‟s likely that even as modern man discovers more about his past, he‟ll not be able to say with clear certainty what happened in the mists of time. In our Bible, the book of Genesis records the first thing that man made; an apron. They do say that necessity is the mother of invention and Adam certainly thought this was a necessity! In the modern world, an apron is used in many trades or professions and obviously in the kitchen. The first use which it was put to was felt to be far more important. Many will be familiar with at least some of the details around what some call the „story‟ of Adam and Eve. Living in the most advantageous of circumstances, enjoying the fellowship of God, they

succumbed to the temptation and subtle ways of the „serpent‟. The verses tell us that it put doubt in their minds and questioned what God had said. God had prohibited them of one thing, to eat a particular fruit. The Bible doesn‟t say the fruit of the tree was an apple as some suppose, just that it was a fruit that was good for food and pleasant to the eye. They took it because they had been told they would be „as God‟. The sad fact was that they were being disobedient and this has reflected on mankind ever since. Immediately they had eaten, they became aware of their nakedness and invented, yes, the apron. In order to feel „dressed‟ in God‟s presence, they needed something to hide behind. Their conscience and the guilt they felt for what they had done meant they had to try and conceal themselves and hide from God. I‟m sure that all of us at some point have tried, and maybe succeeded, at „covering up‟ some misdemeanour and no doubt been relieved when it didn‟t come to light. Sadly the disobedience

Adam and Eve has had a more profound effect on mankind. Their invention has not been sufficient to conceal any of the sin found in this world. The second part of the narrative tells us that God made coats of skin and clothed them. Adam and Eve stopped trusting in such flimsy, temporary aprons, they relied on what God provided. As a principle, what man invents is always temporary to a greater or lesser extent. Only God can provide permanent solutions and in the matter of sin, His solution is His Son, Jesus Christ. The sacrifice He has made is the permanent answer to man‟s need. Thankfully we don‟t need to invent anything. Men will „patent‟ a good invention so they can retain rights of ownership. God has the patent on salvation but He will give it to you freely upon request. What invention have you put your faith in? Church attendance? Religion? Only the salvation which God has provided can deal with sin and make that sinner fit for heaven. Make sure your faith is placed in that salvation and not the inventions of men, no matter how old they might be.

Thought Spot Sin is not hurtful because it‟s forbidden -It‟s forbidden because it‟s hurtful!

Micro-Renewables – Why Bother? For most of us the electricity we use comes

through a cable, the heating and hot water

comes from a gas or oil boiler and that’s that.

Or is it? Don’t worry, this article isn’t about

saving the planet, about being pioneers or

about doing the right thing. It’s about your

utility bills and your hard-earned cash.

I don’t need to tell you by how much

electricity, gas and oil prices have gone up in

the last few years. And most of us have an

idea which way these prices will go in the

future. But what can you do? Well, first of

all lets get our priorities right:

Approximately two thirds of the energy use

in a typical home is for space heating and hot

water, the remaining third is electricity. So,

how do we heat our homes and how much

does it cost? Mains gas is about £30 per

MWh of energy used, for oil fired systems

it’s almost twice as much. Perhaps

surprisingly for some, wood pellets for

biomass boilers come in at about £45 per

MWh. But our first priority has to be

insulation. Every MWh of heat kept in the

home is £30 to £60 saved.

The good news is that there is a wealth of

real financial help available to get homes

insulated and to have micro-renewable

systems installed. The best starting point for

any home owner or tenant is the Energy

Saving Trust. They provide free advice and

have some great offers and loans available.

Call them on 0800 512 012 or find them on

the internet on

www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/scotland.

Since April 2010 there is the Feed In Tariff

(FIT), which pays people generously for

electricity they generate with a renewable

technology (wind, solar PV, hydro and

CHP). In June of this year the Renewable

Heat Incentive (RHI) will come into force.

This will pay people for the heat they

produce with a renewable technology

(biomass, solar thermal, heat pumps, CHP).

Getting good and balanced advice on what

technology or which product to choose can

be a bit trickier. Again, the Energy Saving

Trust is a good starting point. There are also

local advice centres such as REAP in Keith

and Transition Town Forres, where experts

can offer impartial advice. Accredited

installers generally provide good quality

work but their advice is often biased by the

products they deal with.

We’ll be looking at each micro-renewable

technology in more detail in future issues of

the Lossie Local so make sure you get a

copy.

Impossible? That‟s what I thought when my friend from Glasgow first mentioned Enjo to me. She sent me some samples which I used for a few weeks and I was a total convert: Enjo has taken the hard work out of cleaning and my bathroom/ kitchen/windows/etc sparkle like never before!

Enjo uses patented fibre technology and just cold water. It is scientifically proven that Enjo cleans 6.5 times better than traditional cleaning methods. As a mother of a 4 year old time is very precious but it is also important to me to provide a safe and healthy home environment for my family by eliminating harmful cleaners. Everybody will feel the difference, especially people with asthma and allergies. Last but not least you will also contribute to a better environment: no chemicals going down the drain and entering our waterways; no plastic bottles into landfill and you won‟t have to carry them home from the shops.

Enjo micro fibres last for many years. Recently I met a lady who told me that her mother in Austria has used the same glove for 10 years. Considering that the average household spends £130 per year on cleaning products you can save quite a bit of money over the years.

I love Enjo products so much that I‟ve decided to become the first consultant in the Moray Firth Area. Enjo is for your house, your B&B, your café, your cleaning business … (HACCP certified for commercial use).

Spend less time cleaning and get better results! And all without using any chemicals!

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB After spending December idle due to the weather, Lossie returned to action early in January

with a home game against Keith. Lossie survived a couple of early scares before taking the

lead through Nikki Smith, and Ross Archibald gave the hosts a two goal lead at half time.

Lossie kept the Maroons at bay in the second half and added a third in the final minutes; this

time a comedy own goal from the visitors.

The winter weather was still causing problems well into the month and a thick frost saw

Lossie’s trip to Huntly postponed. Instead, Lossie found themselves hosting Rothes at short

notice following the postponement of their game at Fort William. Lossie found themselves

a man down early in the game when Kevin Flett was ordered off, but the Coasters held their

nerve to complete a league double over the Speysiders, with goals from Martin McMullan

and Steven Ellis putting Lossie out of sight before Rothes bagged a late consolation.

Lossiemouth and Cove Rangers earned a point each as they fought out a rare goalless draw,

but the lack of goals wasn’t down to a lack of effort as both sides tried their best to bag a

winner on a chilly day at Grant Park. Last time Cove visited Grant Park they were on the

wrong end of a 3-2 score line and a repeat was unlikely, but the Aberdeen side were happy

to leave with a point following a poor run of form.

Lossie ended January with their first defeat of the year, a 6-0 loss to title chasing Turriff

United at The Haughs. The Coasters shipped three goals in either half on a field recently

cleared of floodwater, snow, and possibly livestock, but the conditions played only a minor

role as Lossie shot themselves in the foot a number of times.

Two goalless weekends were forgotten as Lossie got back to winning ways with victory

over bottom side Fort William. Lossie survived the loss of an early goal to go into the half

time break a goal ahead thanks to goals from Nikki Smith and Bryan Bell. JJ Urquhart

bagged a third in the second half and Lossie went on to miss half a dozen opportunities to

increase their lead, while Darren McConnachie saved a penalty for Lossie.

Another trip into darkest Aberdeenshire ended in defeat for Lossie, this time at Princess

Royal Park against Deveronvale. Earlier in the season Lossie had dismantled a poor Vale

side at Grant Park, winning easily by three first half goals to nil. A stubborn display from

Lossie saw the sides reach half time without scoring, but Vale went on to avenge their

previous defeat with two second-half goals securing a workmanlike win.

The draw for the first round of the Fosters Highland League Cup has been made, and

“As a local tradesman I have found it invaluable to advertise in this publication. It appears to me that many potential customers hold on to their copies of The Lossie Local, and refer to the information in it for a much longer period than they would,
