The Lord has truly risen, alleluia. To him be glory and power for all the ages of eternity, alleluia, alleluia! Luke 24:34 Mary Magdalene and the other disciples, first distraught at discovering the empty tomb, began to comprehend that Jesus had indeed risen. Our belief in the empty tomb fills us with unbounded hope and the promise of eternal life. It is the answer to our every prayer that one day we might share in that same risen life and be with him always. The empty tomb calls us to live as Jesus did, to surrender ourselves to the Father’s will. Through the waters of baptism, we are called to be a source of consolation, hope, forgiveness, peace, and love to all we encounter in our everyday living. We are encouraged to identify with Jesus’ supreme act of love, to give ourselves over for others in total love, to die to self through acts of love. Our faith opens us to receive the power to carry on the mission of the risen Christ within our world, to be dead to sin and to live for God in Christ Jesus. We welcome everyone joining us at Mass today, especially new parishioners, out of town visitors and college students home on break. Whether you come to Mass at St. John of the Cross Parish every week or are able to join us just on occasion, your presence and participation are important to us. Our parish is here to help you live our Catholic faith, to celebrate the Sacraments, and to support you in being a witness and proclaimer of the Gospel. At St. John of the Cross we invite everyone to experience the vibrant Catholic spirituality of our parish! We are a faith community fueled by the energy, enthusiasm, and commitment of many generous people who gather to pray, to learn, to serve, and be Christ to others. Members of all ages take advantage of a myriad of education and formation opportunities, and outreach and social activities that support each of us in our mission to love as Christ loved and to proclaim the Good News. This special Easter bulletin is both a guide highlighting the numerous ministries and activities at our parish and an invitation to become involved in our parish. A quote from our founding pastor is etched in glass above our interior church front doors, “This is a parish for all people.” Truly this is evidenced in all that we offer and accomplish together in faith. Contact any one of our Pastoral Staff members to learn more.

Happy Easter!

Welcome! is the name of our New Member Program at St. John of the Cross. The Welcome! Program is a time for you to get to know all about your new parish and for us to get to know about you and your family. Each of us has a place at the Eucharistic Table at St. John of the Cross. Each of us is called to discover, to grow, to be all God has asked us to be. We are so happy to be on the journey with you. The Welcome! Program has 3 Steps.

Registration

One-on-One Welcome

Meet Your Host Family

Becoming a Member of SJC

Registration at St. John of the Cross Parish is important to being part of the community. We invite you to fill out our registration form completely. Begin to think about ministries and activities that you and your family members may be interested in learning more about. Forms are available online or in the Parish Center.

The second step in our Welcome! Program will provide you with an informal one-on-one meeting with one of our staff members within 5 business days of registering. This Coordinator will introduce you to everything at SJC, take you on a tour of our campus, listen to ways that our parish might help you, inspire you, and become an important part of your life and answer any questions you may have.

Over the first few months after joining SJC, you and your family will be matched with another member family who will reach out to help you become better acquainted with and involved in your new faith community. They will be a family just like you, a familiar face who can introduce you to others and make you feel a part of our parish. The Welcome! Program will also host a casual social gathering to help you continue to connect with and get to know other new parishioners.

Baptism Parents or parents-to-be are invited to a Baptism Preparation Class to learn about the meaning and grace of the Sacrament of Baptism. Baptisms are celebrated on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. First Eucharist and Confirmation for Youth Our parish youth receive preparation for these sacraments in both our Parish School and Youth Catechesis Program. RCIA for Adults Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is for those who have never been baptized, who have been baptized Catholic, but not completed the Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist and Confirmation) or who have been baptized in another faith and wish to become Catholic. Weekly classes begin each fall. Confirmation for Adults Adults over 18 who have been baptized, received communion and are currently practicing their faith, but have not been confirmed may attend preparation classes held in February of each year. Reconciliation Private confessions are heard in church on Saturdays following the 8:00 a.m. Mass or by appointment. Evening Communal Reconciliation Services with confession and absolution are held in Advent and Lent. Anointing the Sick This Sacrament offers the Lord’s healing, strength and peace to anyone who is seriously or chronically ill, hospitalized, or about to undergo surgery. Please contact the Parish Center if you wish to have someone anointed. Sacrament of Matrimony Engaged couples are invited to contact one of our priests to plan their wedding and prepare for married life.

Sacraments call us to worship, to build up the Church, to deepen our faith, to show us how to pray, to connect us to the living tradition of the Church and to sanctify us. They are physical signs and rituals that reveal God’s presence. We invite you to celebrate the Sacraments at St. John of the Cross Parish.

Parish Advisory Council Our Parish Advisory Council (PAC for short) was commissioned by our Pastor, Fr. David, to guide the parish in living out its vision and mission statement. Our Council is comprised of parish leaders from each consultative body (Finance Council, Youth Catechesis Council, School Advisory Board, and Crossroads Advisory Board) and ministry advisory group (spirituality, outreach, communications, and worship), both elected parishioners at large and parishioners appointed by the Council, and the pastoral staff. Gathering three times per year allows communication and collaboration that steers our parish forward. Parishioners are encouraged to become involved in our Parish Advisory Council, the Youth Catechesis Council or School Advisory Board. Elections will be held in May for positions on these three consultative bodies. Specific details about each group and how to become a candidate can be found on our parish website under the About Us tab at: http://www.stjohnofthecross.org/old-welcome/leadership/

Getting Involved

Men’s Club Our parish Men’s Club provides ongoing opportunities for spiritual enrichment, service and fellowship. From hosting the Lenten Fish Fry with our Crossroads Teens, to Men’s Nights Out in the Parish Center to their successful speaker series, the Men’s Club offers great ways to become involved and enjoy camaraderie with fellow guys in the parish. Women’s Club Our parish Women’s Club is a strong, energetic, spirited group of women who gather for spiritual, educational, social, charitable and family interests. This group has been a longtime financial supporter of our church, school, Youth Catechesis program and a variety of community groups as well as a provider of scholarships to Catholic high schools for parishioners in need. Young Mothers’ Club Our Women’s Club sponsors a group open for all mothers of young children in the Parish, gathering for friendship, fun, support, learning and ministry. Saintly Seniors’ Club Active seniors meet four times a year for a themed luncheon: Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Octoberfest.

Pursuing Life-Long Education and Formation Opportunities

Faith is a constant gift from God. It is offered to us from before our birth over and over again in our lives. Faith is not something we acquire on our own initiative, but rather, it grows and deepens as we experience life. The adult learning programs such as you see below are simply tools to help us respond to God’s gift of faith. All offer opportunities to journey with one another in faith.

The mission of St. John of the Cross Parish School is to provide a safe, dynamic Catholic environment where faith is nourished and knowledge grows. We offer challenging educational experiences that foster success, promote unity and respect the individuality of each student. Our parish school prides itself on multi-generational Catholic traditions and achievements which empower our students to live. In 2012 our school was awarded the national Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence. SJC Parish School offers 3 and 4 yr. old preschool, full and half day kindergarten and an accredited comprehensive academic curriculum for grades one through eight. We offer complete music, art, physical education and computer programs as well as Spanish for grades one to eight. SJC Parish School is a vibrant Catholic community of parents, students and teachers, all dedicated to providing a premiere faith based education for our children. Visit our website to learn more about our Blue Ribbon school.

Youth Catechesis is SJC’s religious education program that partners with families in the faith formation of our parish children.

Volunteer catechists cultivate a love for Jesus through a welcoming atmosphere, prayer, scripture lessons and active learning. We joyfully serve over 1100 children at YC at sessions that promote the understanding of the traditions of our Catholic faith. We also sponsor a summer Vacation Bible School each summer. This summer, July 8-12, we will be learning about God with Kingdom Rock! Families are welcome to register children throughout the year. The YC office is located in the school building on the southeast corner. Please enter our entrance at 51st Street and Caroline Avenue.

Our Crossroads Youth Ministry serves all high school age parishioners attending both Catholic and public schools! Our teens get involved in faith sharing in their small home groups that meet twice a month. Teens connect to a variety of service projects like our fall Harvest Saturday food collection, making Easter Baskets for children who otherwise would not receive any, and serving and cooking at the Inspiration Café.

Teens are also able to further deepen their faith via retreats and work tour service trips. If you know a teen that would like to get involved, encourage them to stop by our Teen Space and meet Katie Hayes.

Teams of adult volunteers and teen leaders work together to plan and implement our activities. Current adults include home group leaders, parents of teens and parishioners with grown or no children. If you would like to support or mentor teens, please call or email Katie.

Outreach

Outreach plays a significant role in parish life at St. John of the Cross.

Every day of the year parishioners of all ages are called to continue the mission of Jesus Christ though involvement in many outreach efforts such as providing operational and financial support and building relationships with our six Sharing Parishes, assisting those in prison and their families, dropping off food in the church vestibule for area food pantries, collecting clothing, coats and school backpacks, and career networking for the unemployed. Parishioners also participate in our Harvest Saturday food drive (an annual event led by our Crossroads teens) and Share Christmas which provides food and gifts to thousands of families in the Chicago area. Volunteers also provide labor and construction materials for local outreach and out of state and Chicago area work tours. Go to our Outreach page on our parish website to see how you and your family can become involved!

Join our Outreach Director, Bill Bright, and the Outreach Ministry Advisory Team who help guide our focus and outreach efforts.

Pastoral Care & Resources

Ministry to the Sick & Homebound: Care ministers regularly visit parishioners who are ill in hospitals, care centers or at home. Due to patient confidentiality procedures, the parish is not typically notified of parishioner admissions to hospitals or care centers. If you are homebound, hospitalized or placed in a local care center and wish to have someone visit and bring Eucharist or if you are interested in learning more about being a Minister of Care, call Fr. Filbert. Bereavement Ministry: Our parish supports all parishioners who experience the loss of a loved one. If you have a death in the family and the funeral is at St. John of the Cross, a trained bereavement minister will call to offer prayerful support and to help plan the funeral liturgy. If the funeral is not at our parish, families are encouraged to contact the Parish Center office so that we may offer prayers at Mass and publish a remembrance in our weekly bulletin. If you are interested in joining this important ministry call Fr. David. Healing from the Loss of a Loved One: Seasons of Hope is a six-week scripture-based program especially for those healing from loss. The program is offered in the spring and fall. The 2013 spring session will begin after Easter. Caritas Needy Family Fund: Using the Latin word for “charity” as its name, this fund provides emergency financial support to parishioners, who through unplanned circumstances face difficulty meeting a critical financial obligation. Confidential arrangements are provided on a case by case basis through the Pastor. Our offertory collections on Holy Thursday and Thanksgiving are directed to this fund, however donations can be made to the Caritas Needy Family Fund throughout the year. Counseling: If you or a family member is having difficulty dealing with this complex and stressful world in which we live, Holbrook Counseling Center of Catholic Charities can help. The Center, located in our Rectory, offers assistance that is confidential and convenient. For further information or to schedule an appointment please call Catholic Charities at 312.655.7725. Respect Life: Leading the parish in prayer for the unborn and the elderly, inspiring others to speak out through legislative advocacy and pastoral care, and instilling a deeper appreciation for God, for life and for every person through the education of Catholic Social Teachings are the main focus points for this parish committee. To get involved contact parishioner, Blanche Heaney. Mass Intentions: An important part of our Catholic tradition is to pray for those who have died. Requests that a particular loved one be remembered at Mass can be arranged at the Parish Center Office. Sympathy cards are available if you wish to notify the family that a Mass will be offered at our parish. Occasionally people will request that a Mass be said for the living on an anniversary or birthday. A Mass intention stipend of $10 is requested. Prayer Request List: Parishioners who are ill or who have a family member who is ill may request to have the person remembered on the prayer request list. Only immediate family members may place names on the list. The person will be remembered in a special intention at Sunday Mass and will be remembered in prayer in the bulletin. Call the Parish Center.
