It’s helmed by Chung Kin-leung, the former executive chef at Government House, who’s cooked for the likes of US presidents (George Bush) and UK prime ministers (the late Margaret Thatcher). The restaurant’s menu pays homage to his days there, with signature dishes like sifu’s crispy chicken and foie gras prawn cutlets on toast. The Look: The Four Seasons’ new Nail Bar has sweeping views of Victoria Harbour, five plush leather massage chairs and lots of dainty accents throughout. Designed by architect Richard Farnell—who also did The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai—the interiors play with jewel and polish motifs. Adjustable separators between each chair provide privacy, or slide them back to chat with a friend.

The Experience: You can do the Nail Bar several ways—have a lingering mani-pedi (mani from $700; pedi from $800), book out the space for a “Nail Social” with your girlfriends (from $1,188) or treat your man to an “Executive Grooming” package (from $700), which includes a glass of whisky.

The Results: On my visit I tried the CND Shellac pedicure (from $1,020), which has since survived several beach trips and Muay Thai classes. Most treatments come with a warm soak, exfoliation, moisturizing mask, a relaxing foot massage and a beverage of your choice—be it champers or tea. So you should leave feeling pretty darn pampered.

The Takeaway: A spa manicure or pedicure at the new Nail Bar is a total treat—but do note that it’s a small space, so you’ll want to book in advance. The treatments are not meant to be rushed, so set aside a couple of hours and get your money’s worth of relaxation.

experts how to tackle common hair problems.

Main Causes“There are many reasons for the hair to go dull,” David explains. “In Hong Kong, the water has strong chemicals. These chemicals cause color treatments to wash out and turn matte very quickly. Swimming pools are definitely a big problem too—chlorine is particularly bad for highlights as it makes the color go green.”

The Fix BruneBlonde offers a unique range of exfoliating clay products from France to help combat the problem of dull hair. “We have a special treatment with clay, La Phyto, which can clear and clean your scalp, and help with problems caused by such things as pollution and products,” says David. “We have six different types of clay for different scalp problems.” The treatment uses natural ingredients based on Chinese medicine to exfoliate the scalp and open up your pores—it goes on like a face mask over your

scalp, gets massaged in and left to do its thing.

After the mask, David recommends using haircare products regularly at home to keep your hair shiny and chemical-free. “I recommend using our Coco Blush products,” he says. “These are all-natural and ideal for stressed hair, covering the full range of hair types such as oily, dry and color-treated.”

Keratin is also a very effective treatment for dull hair—and one that’s also very popular for frizzy stands. “We use a keratin called Discovery by Ybera, with apple stem cells,” says David. “It is formaldehyde-free and also smells very nice.”

Main Causes“Most scalp itch is caused by poor hair care such as overusing shampoo and incorrectly using conditioner,” reveals Sarah. “Conditioner isn’t made for the scalp: it contains lots of mineral oil to smooth the hair, but when it’s room temperature, mineral oil doesn’t repair hair or the scalp—but rather damages both.” Other causes include heat damage, chemicals such as alcohol (a common ingredient in many products), infections and medication.

She then recommends the application of a good scalp mask for clients suffering from itchy, dry scalps: Iyara uses organic, 100 percent-natural scalp products

Main CausesWhen it comes to hair loss, there are the seven “Hs” that cover many of the common causes for men and women,” Aline explains. These are: Heredity, Hormones, Health, Healing (medication induced), Hassle, Hunger (dietary deficiency) and Hairdressing (overstressed hair).

The FixHair loss is a complex condition that is caused by a wide variety of factors, so “the fix” is not a quick or simple answer. Strand and Science HairSpa offers a trichologist’s scientific approach to the problem: “As we can have many different types of hair loss, we will also have many different treatments,” Aline explains, “so a trichologist is important. “We have an holistic view about the patient’s issues and treatments.”

Aline starts with a one-hour client consultation, as a proper diagnosis and management of the underlying causes is essential. In some cases, hair loss can be the result of excess vitamins, particularly the fat-soluble ones. But a deficiency in iron stores, such as Vitamin B-12 or folic acid, can have the same effect. Likewise, autoimmune disorders such as as lupus can affect the hair cycle and follicles.

A consultation will provide you with comprehensive information and a tailored daily care plan. The plan is extensive and includes hair-related products but may also include nutrition supplements or an overhaul of your diet.

Quick Tip“The best way to hide hair loss is with hair clips, but there is also some hair-color spray when the loss is minimal, and wigs when the hair loss is huge,” Aline advises.

Balms & SpraysFor each hair type there are different products and it’s totally down to trial and error as to what works for you. Lots of oils and balms are available to seal in any “frizzies” and give you a more finished look that lasts longer—and don’t be afraid to add more product after hair is dry. I’ve found that for naturally curly hair you should always use a styling product and semi-dry the hair. For straight hair, or for the gals who have had a blowout, I recommend a heat-protection spray or styling product to protect the hair from pollution and heat damage.

Tip: If you have annoying frizz around the hairline, take a toothbrush, add hairspray to it and brush those frizzy bits into the direction they want to go or that look the best.

Dry ShampooWe all live in a buzzing city with people to see and places to go; dry shampoo is an alternative to prevent washing too regularly, which drys out your lovely locks. Most of us have chemically treated hair, which dries it out, and we’re also battling the “humidity monster.” Dry shampoo is magic in a bottle: It absorbs oiliness from your roots and it doesn’t dry out the ends. It’s best to apply dry shampoo before your head hits the pillow at night—the shampoo will work itself into your strands overnight, resulting in clean, healthy-looking hair in the morning.

Tip: Always alternate your shampoo routine with a deep-cleansing shampoo to get rid of pollution or any product build-up.

Avocado MasksThis little green mean machine is still the best-kept secret. Not only does it contain more than 20 minerals, but you can create more than 20 types of masks with it—whether it’s for dry and dull hair or for a facial mask. Just to give you two magical avo treatments for hair: avo and tea tree oil; and avo and mint oil. For every soup spoon of avocado use the same quantity of oil for a perfect consistency. For drier hair, add more avocado, as the magic is in the fruit! Just shampoo your hair well, towel-dry and add your avocado treatment. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and rinse well, then finish with conditioner. Repeat at least once a month.

Tip: Remember the old stories of our grandmas brushing their hair 100 times a night? There’s a great reason for that: natural oils that have formed on the scalp get brushed down to our mid-length and ends, creating a microscopic layer over the hair strands and protecting them.

Like everything in this expensive city, Waxing Lyrical, you get what you pay for, so of course you’ll hear horror stories associated with budget, back-alley salons. But is your bikini line really an area you want to take a risk on? Make sure you pick experienced waxing therapists as regulations are not too strict here—word of mouth in Hong Kong is one of the best ways to assess the situation.

That’s not to say you need to spend an absolute fortune every month, as there are some bargains to be had. When I first moved here, and would rather spend money on cocktails than hair removal, I was recommended Freedas hair removal (various locations including M/F, 124 Caine Rd., Mid-Levels, 3580-0405). Service is fast, efficient and, more often than not, you don’t need an appointment. But it is definitely frills-free: you lie on paper sheets, the salons use soft wax with paper strips and there’s no messing about—it’s on, off, a little bit of talc and you’re

However if you’re looking for a little more love and tenderness, then head to one of the city’s many upscale wax salons. Take Nude Beautique (14/F, M88 Building, 2-8 Wellington St., Central, 2868-9100; Brazilian, $450): the Brazilian wax specialists know how to treat you right, with sweets and magazines in the bright-white waiting room, little hygienic wipes and super soft towels. The therapists are thorough but gentle, using sweet-smelling hard wax and extra careful application if your skin is sensitive or the wax tricky to remove.

Of a similar ilk is Strip Ministry of Waxing (8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, 2845-0838; Brazilian $440). Although here the lights are dimmed, you’re given personal in-room lockers for your belongings and you can pick your scent of high-quality hard wax—I loved the coconut one. The therapists here earn their money: they take care of all in-grown hairs (be prepared for careful inspection) and will offer advice on serums and shower scrubs for your arsenal.

As you’ve got a couple of months left before junk season, it’s worth trying out a few yourself to see which suits, especially as first-timers can score up to 50 percent off at most salons. Still set on bargain hunting? Keep an eye on Facebook, as many salons post promotions on their pages.

Nestled on the shores of Deep Bay in the northeasterly district of Yuen Long, just across the water from Shenzhen, there are few who know about this stretch of mangroves and sandy flats.

Although it’s a fairly remote destination, Ha Pak Nai is one of the best spots to catch a Hong Kong sunset.

Two weeks before (or earlier if you can)

Book a date with your moving company – pick the right one… they can make or break a move – trust me.

Donate all unwanted clothes, books and furniture – there are many charities here in Hong Kong who accept donations

Contact all the relevant authorities, providing them with your new address – sadly there isn’t an app for this – yet?!

Try to get some sleep…….the next few weeks will be stressful

Two days from moving day

Arrange parking and access for removal trucks – your building management can help with this

Remember to pack a “survival” box containing essentials such as medication, �rst-aid kit, toiletries, co�ee, baby needs… and maybe even wine!
