    RUNNERS HIGH: THC & EXERCI

    BY KATHATRINE LOTZESENIOR EDITOR

We all need a little extra motivation to get tothe gym sometimes, but if youre a regular cannabisuser, there may actually be a little extra incentive topump some iron or clock a few miles.

There might be some performance-enhancing-- though perhaps of a different sort -- for someathletes. David S. of Eugene, Ore., is a recreationalcyclist who likes to take a toke before a ride

It calms me down, makes me a better biker...more considerate, he said.

While marijuana is not typically known as aperformance-enhancing drug -- though it is includedon the World Anti-Doping Agencys (WADA) bannedsubstances list and one American athlete at theLondon Olympics was expelled for testing positive formarijuana in 2012 -- it may have an effect similar to arunners high following a sweat session.

A runners high is caused by a flood ofendorphins to the brain and will make the runner feeleuphoric after a run, according to a German studyreported by the New York Times in 2008. For thecasual user, cannabis may also provide an extra highwhen hitting the gym. The psychoactive ingredient inmarijuana, called tetrahydrocannabinol or THC forshort, is stored in fat cells, and burning that fat during

a workout session will re-release the THC into yoursystem, creating a small high while youre sweatingit out.

But the jury is out on whether or not cannabiscan really be considered performance enhancing.

Not a lot of research has been done in thisarea, said Christian Roberts, the director of theExercise and Metabolic Disease Research Lab at theUniversity of California, Los Angeles.

Roberts recently co-authored a brief articlethat summarized existing research on the relationship

between exercise and marijuana, which concmarijuana does not have an ergogenic effectperformance.

Roberts said that very few studies haveand nearly all have used smoked forms, and otof administration have not been tested. One effects of smoking marihuana on physical perfperformed in 1975 by Steadward and Singh, hacomplete a control treadmill test before and afta joint.

If they smoke marijuana and then tto exercise, performance will decrease, RoHe indicated that the decrease in performanmay not be due to the THC, and could be relinhalation of smoke prior to exercise.

His research stated that some athletecannabis as a sleep or relaxation aid, which couenhance athletic performance.

This would be done so far in advanprobably wouldnt have a negative effect, Robe

Julie was diagnosed with a spinalect nine years ago, and chroniciting syndrome not long after that, was prescribed a slew of drugs

combat depression, anxiety, pain, sea and more.I was so sick of prescription

dication, she said. I couldnt livethat.Julie lives in Hawaii, where medical

rijuana is legal -- but doesnt allow forensaries. After experimenting with

rijuana and realizing it alleviatedny of her symptoms, she got herdical card and set to growing at

me with her husband, and theirt-year-old daughter. Her daughter, Lili, was introduced

gardening at school, and beganng questions about what she thened her moms smoking plant. At, Julies husband, Eric, dealt with questions, but they ultimatelyded to be upfront with theirisitive daughter.Shes dealt with me being sick for

ong, we figured why not? she said.Julie and Eric keep all consumptiony from their daughter, and thoughtut how theyd explain her momsdicine to Lili before she was evenenough to ask questions. When thee came, they explained that Juliesdicine is legal because she has adical card, and that some peopleit without a card to get a buzz.We took a conservative

roach, Eric said. Our approachy not be right...we do the best weLili has always known what thet was used for, and even helps her

ents harvest it in the summertime.can do everything from mix

rients and compost to pruneplants. Shes even starting to

understand the difference between thesativa and indica varieties. Julie saysshed rather have her be educated.

I want her to be involved becauseits affecting her life too, she said.

And they may be on to something.A 2011 study conducted by theMotherisk Program at TorontosHospital for Sick Children found thatchildren who grew up in homes ofmarijuana growers were healthy anddrug-free -- and that removing themfrom the home can cause much moredamage than letting the children stay.

    Other parents havent been so

lucky. CNN recently reported that ChildProtective Services handles medicalmarijuana cases the same way ithandles all other drugs, according to aspokeswoman, because the substanceis still classified as a Schedule I drug bythe Federal Government -- the samecategory as heroin or ecstasy. Severalfamilies in California have seen theirchildren sent to foster care and havehad to fight to regain custody.

Its still a very real concern, Ericsaid, and its the reason the familyasked that their last name not be used.Julie and Eric dont sell marijuana andthe only grow theallowed number ofplants.

We havea responsiblehousehold aboutit, he said.

Julie and Eric have been lucky inthat their friends and family understandher need for the medicinal plant, andthat their daughter is educated andwell aware of the plants uses.

Theyre happy Im off theprescription medication, Julie said ofthe support shes received from herfriends and family for her marijuanause. Theyre happy Im not sick.

When Julie does get sick andneeds to go to the hospital -- which Ericsays is about every two months -- Liliisnt traumatized by it.

When [Julie] has to go [to the

hospital], my daughter knows shehas to grab a coke for her because itsettles her stomach, he said. Its kindof sad, but its kind of a proud thingtoo.

Despite her interest in gardeningthe plant, Lili has no interest inconsuming it. Julie says that Lili ismore wary of prescription medicationbecause of all of Julies hospital visits. In fact, she hates the smell of smoke. She prefers that Mom medicates withedibles, but that isnt always possibleif Julie is feeling nauseous because ofher illness.

Shell give Mom a few coughsevery now and then, Eric said. Shes abusy kid; its not really an issue.

But not all kids have the educationand disinterest for the substancethat Lili does. After Colorado legalizedrecreational marijuana in 2012, thenumber of children poisoned by eatingmarijuana-infused cookies, brownies, sodas or candy spiked, US Newsreported in May 2013.

When Julie made infused cookies,Lili asked if she could make someregular ones for her to eat too. Ericsays she wasnt interested because

    of the marijuanacontent.

    She wasi n t e r e s t e dbecause my wifeis a damned-goodcook! he said.

Lili even has dreams of one dayopening a dispensary so that her momnever has to be sick again. Julie isntsure that thats the life she wants herdaughter to pursue, but nonetheless, shes thrilled Lili is so involved.

Its kind of cool that she caresenough about her mom she wants tohelp out, she said. Its given her hermother back.

Along with Morris staff ofconcierges providing a safe andinformative environment for her guests, budtenders working the dispensariesalong the tour afford an added peace ofmind to those whove are new to other,non-smoking forms of marijuana.

Thirty percent of our customersare looking for medical cannabis, and

theyre asking questions. Thankfully wehave some of the most experiencedbudtenders in the state, and theyreold school medical so they can answer

very efficiently. There are also otherresources we can direct people to, saidChristie Lunsford, operations director at3D Cannabis Center in Denver, and oneof major dispensaries on the marijuana

    tourism circuit.

Most of Morris guests arebetween 40 and 75. Once marijuanawas legalized, Morris found it difficult toutilize and enjoy the newfound positive

turn of events due to her age.

As a 63-year-old woman it was

difficult for me to make use of this newlypassed law. I asked myself, How do I goand buy this? And now that its legal, wheredo you go? So I saw a market to create a

tourism business that caters to a moremature, professional adult, Morris said.I get grandma and grandpa, and theirchildren who are in their 40s. I get RedHat ladies, people who are in town forbusiness, and couples celebrating theiranniversary. It works just like any tourismbusiness does, the only difference being

that it involves pot smoking, gourmetmunchies, and a meal.

3D Cannabis Center has alsoseen an array of tour enthusiasts walk

through the door to purchase marijuanaand view their grow operation in theback.

The tourism consists of peoplefrom all over the United States andinternational travelers, Lunsford said. They tend to be slightly more affluentbecause theyre traveling, which is notavailable to everyone. Generally, 70percent of them have some kind ofrelationship with the plant, even if its 30

years ago. Now theyre in their late-50shere skiing and are like, Oh, adult-use

marijuana? Lets go check that out! The stops at the dispensariesare brief for tourism guests, andconstitute a minimal amount of the tour

time, leaving the duration of the tour forpartaking instead of shopping.

If they dont have to stand in line, its six to ten minutes in the dispensingarea. Then they get to come see ouramazing 80-foot long viewing corridorwhere we grow our own marijuana so

they can see the product theyre buyingis well taken care of, Lunsford said. Youcan come and see your plants being

arijuana Tourism:e New Hospitality IndustrySHANE CHANTFF WRITER

Though marijuana legalizationtaken away the legal burden foraficionados and newcomers alike in

rado, there are still many who haveo experience this new change -- if onlyknew how to approach it. Thankfully,es a solution to this; a game-changere area of tourism.

Enter: marijuana tourism. Fromong outings in stretch Humvees andklong guided excursions throughoutstate, to all-inclusive ski packages, juana tourism combines the bestinations and attractions in Colorado,

pled with the best marijuana it hasffer. Theres even an option to be

uffeured around in a Lamborghini forday, called the Bustin Jeeber Pop StarTour, for a paltry $1,800. [PICS?]

ng customers to three differentensaries, followed by lunch or dinnerne of Denvers finest restaurantsough patrons are responsible forhasing any marijuana products atdispensaries. Each guest receives aonal stash bag, containing a lighter, and munchies.

This is the best stuff my guests ever smoked. I mean, we had really

d s**t back in college, but it wasntgood, Morris said.

CRMHT also provides cannabiscierges along with their tour to helpomers new to marijuana chooseucts at dispensaries and advise themonsumption -- theyll even make last-

    ute schedule changes for guests.

My guests are here to get but they also want to experienceething while theyre high. Colorado

grown. Its also just a real friendly environmenthere.

Colorado Rocky Mountain HighTours isnt the only tour company that enjoysa visit to the 3D Cannabis Center, nor is

the marijuana group tour the only form ofmarijuana tourism to take advantage of thelegalization of marijuana. 3D Cannabis centerworks with three to four tour companies, andmany private limo drivers.

There are several private carservices where theyll pick up a businessmanin a limo at the airport, pull up in front of

the store and a gentleman will come in andpurchase what he needs, and he leaveshappy, Lunsford said. The drivers know topick him up at the exit door. Theyre brilliant!

Driving around Denver in a vehiclefilled with a plume of marijuana smoke can bedangerous because drivers may be subject

to a contact high -- or worse, theyre alreadyhigh. Morris, in her maternal approach to thisbusiness, already considered these as realpossibilities and addressed them before itbecame an issue.

All the limo drivers we use have to beabsolutely drug free, and not use any drugs orany pot while on the clock. We do everythingwe can to protect our drivers from second-hand smoke, Morris said.

The safety of the drivers is onlyexceeded by the attention to the safety of theguests, who begin and end their tour at thefront door of their hotel.

The benefit of what Im doingis allowing people to get high in a safe, comfortable, controlled environment, Morrissaid. The clientele Im going for are used toluxury, not getting into one of the party busseswith the stripper poles. They want the comfortof a limo, they want their bottled water, theywant gourmet chocolate chip cookies andsnacks, and a great lunch in a private anddiscreet environment. Were eliminating allrisks.

While the legalization of recreationalmarijuana in Colorado was covered bylegislation, the tourism element was not. This has allowed the marijuana tourismbusinesses to flourish in the absence of anylegislature overseeing its perimeters of rulesand regulation. Unfortunately the red tapemay be on its way to ending marijuana tourism

before it ever has the chance to really take off.Its coming. While everyone wants

to jump on this green express, I do believethey will initiate bills and amendments thatwill cover tourism. This is not a long-termbusiness, it has a two year run, Morris said.

For now the marijuana tourismindustry is bourgeoning and healthy, andis as much of the experience of legalizationof recreational marijuana in Colorado as

the dispensaries and the cultural change oflegalization itself.

    THE MO TA POT

    PARADISE CANDY

Theres a hot new company on the market makingeasy for the patient or recreational cannabis user. Eatannibles brings you the Mota Pot. Its essentially a miniessure cooker that allows you infuse three to five gramscannabis to one stick of butter, which is a quarter cup.

Weve heard of using crock pots or modified crock pots tot your infusion done within 2 hours or more, and otherusion methods like double boiling or sauteing still takesound 20 minutes.

The Mota Pot blows away all other infusion methodsterms of time and simplicity. You just pack in your ground cannabis, place it in the metal strainer, pack in your butter

ut into half inch squares) into the bottom compartmentd fill with water. Turn on the stove heat and when it startssteam within five to ten minutes you have your infusedtter ready to pour out. You let the mixture of butter and

ater solidify, and then strain out the water. Then you cane the cooled activated cannabutter for any recipe of youroosing.

The machine consists of three chambers. Thettom chamber is where the butter topped off with

ater goes. The middle chamber is a filter-basket holdinge cannabis, and sits within the bottom chamber. Thep chamber, with a metal filter, screws onto the bottomamber. When the pot is heated on a stove, the pressure

om the steam in the bottom chamber forces the infusionbutter and water through a tube in the filter-basket,

rough the cannabis, and it then funnels into the top

amber where the infusion is ready to pour out.

We were skeptical at first about the Mota Pot butund that the ease of its use was extremely convenientd more importantly the infusion we used was entirely

fective. In addition to its functionality, the break down andean up required minimal effort. We give Eat Cannibles aumbs up with the Mota Pot. They also offer ready to bakexes where you just add eggs and your cannabutter anduve got a dozen infused cookies or brownies within 10nutes. Eat Cannibles is a one stop shop for learning toake your own edibles. For more information check themt online at www.EatCannibles.com.

Almost every major edible companyout there makes a hard candy. Since 2009,Paradise Candy Company has been leading

the way to help set a standard of professionalpackaging and consistent potency, inSouthern California. It all started with a hardcandy lollipop that was so strong, patientsand collectives specially requested a lowerdosage candy to be offered; that is how theirranchers were born. Before they knew itParadise Candy Co. had over 25 differentproducts and flavors from pops, to ranchers, and caramels.

When I lived in San Diego, all themedical closed down in 2006, re-opened in2008 and closed back down in 2011, due

to the City not issuing zoning permits forcollectives. At that point there were only

a couple shops deciding to operate rougeand the rest turned into delivery servicecollectives. I moved to Los Angeles in 2011as the shops were closing down, but I stayedon my favorite San Diego collectives emailnewsletter. It was summer 2012 when Igot an email from that shop announcing theirnewest edible Paradise Candy Co. Havingseen the Los Angeles and Orange Countymarkets, I thought to myself, not anotherrancher hard candy company, and the irony

of it was that not even a week later ParadiseCandy Company was dropping off samples atmy friends shop while I was there.

I was skeptical at first when tryingtheir candies, because up until they camearound, we had only seen inconsistent 8mg single ranchers, and now Paradise wasoffering a 10 mg single rancher as well as anextra strength 25 mg rancher, (sold in fourpacks). Not only was their product effectiveand free of any kind of weird aftertaste, theircaramels also blew away the competitor. If

you let an infused caramel sit, the butter or oilusually separates, and on the shelf, that looksextremely unappealing, or just plain gross.Contrary to that, Paradise Candy Co.scaramels never separate and are always theright consistency.

The flavors of their ranchers andpops include but are not limited to fruit, sour fruit, grape, sour apple, root beer float,

tropical fruit, raspberry, watermelon, guava, kiwi, mango, strawberry, tangerine, pineappleand green apple. Everyones favorite, or atleast my favorite flavor in their line is theircaramel sour apple hard candy duo. They

taste just like the old Halloween candy thatbrings back all those fun memories.

What really sets them apart is thatthey offer their rancher and pops in sugarfree and vegan options. It has only becomea recent thing for edible companies to offer

vegan and healthier options, butbeen offering their sugar free canand the health-conscious since Their vegan candy is made with cwhile their hard candies are alrebecause theyre being sucked ondirectly into the bloodstream inst

One of the many focal points of marijuanalegalization in Colorado is the element of out-of-state

travel in accordance with federal regulation of thesubstance -- especially with the number out-of-state

travelers coming to visit the state on the rise.

Any person above the age of 21 may carry upto one ounce of marijuana on their person anywherein Colorado, even on airport property, though it mustremain in a car and not brought into the facility.

But thats where the lines of regulation begin toblur: airports operate within the states border, thoughaircraft are federally regulated. Denver InternationalAirport has adopted more of a benign approach to

traveling with marijuana out-of-state than of one based in

The Transportation Security Administration isfederally assigned to deter terrorism and security threats

to the aircraft and its passengers, leaving marijuanapossession out of their area of concern, though its stillprohibited on the aircraft.

If the TSA were to find something, they wouldcontact the local authorities who would decide how todeal with it, though the police really wouldnt treat it as acriminal instance, Montgomery said.

Though there has been an influx of travelers toColorado since the legalization of marijuana, the issue of

transporting the substance has yet to become a weightymatter with DIA or the Denver Police Department.

Weve had no noticeable uptake with the numberof contacts with folks transporting marijuana sincelegalization, and along with the Denver Police, weve

When you think of a pot-head, you might thinka young, lazy stoner, perhaps wearing baggy jeans, ackwards hat, with no real job or direction in life. But Cheryld Aimee Shuman are blowing away that stereotype. Whileey may not like to be called pot-heads, they are cannabisthusiasts, and the game-changers that the industry hasen searching for.

Residents of Beverly Hills, Calif., Cheryl and Aimeee the antithesis of what you would expect a pot smokerbe. Together, they ow n the Beverly Hills Cannabis Clubd have garnered quite a reputation nationally. Cherylcame revered as the Martha Stewart of Marijuana, bute has outgrown that title and is now a go-to marijuanapert. They have appeared on shows like Katie Couric,

BCs 20/20, The Doctors, The View, Dr. Phil, and CNNews, to name just a few -- a feat that, 10 years ago, wouldve been unheard of.

Cheryl had never smoked a cigarette in her life, until she was prescribed cannabis for a mood disorder1996. She found that cannabis was a superior mood

abilizer and was more effective than any side-effectden antianxiety or antidepressant that had previouslyen prescribed to her. After a severe car accident andaggressive ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2006, cannabis

oved to be more than just a treatment for pain. Within

72 hours of her cancer diagnosis, she went into emergencysurgery to have a radical hysterectomy. They also removedof parts of her colon and bladder.

I got lucky, in that, I feel cannabis saved my life. Icant prove it scientifically, but I know Im still here when thedoctors said I wouldnt be, Cheryl said.

Four long years of recovery, treatments, surgeriesand doctors appointments, and she still wasnt done. In followup care, they found another mass on her liver, encompassingher entire liver and growing into her gallbladder. She was inhospice care when she began learning about cannabis oiland Rick Simpson oil, hearing stories about patients beinghealed by cannabis. But she was living in Ohio and afraidof the legal repercussions associated with cannabis there.

So, she relocated to California and planted her own medicalmarijuana garden.

When Cheryl started using cannabis for medicine, she sat her girls down and had an open and honest talk with

them. Sh e strongly believes in being upfront with childrenabout medical marijuana use: address the facts and know

that marijuana was demonized; let them know its a medicinelike any other, and for some its a responsible alternative toalcohol.

The bottom line is theyre going to learn aboutcannabis, or drugs, or marijuana, or whatever you want

to call it in school, an d cannabis is much easier to get inschool than anything else, Cheryl said. So I felt it was veryimportant to have that talk with my children about cannabisbeing used as a medicine for responsible adult use and notfor children, and to be treated like any other medication. The fact that it was prescribed by my doctor was an addedbonus. I think when you take that mystery out of it; it doesntmean so much, its like anything else.

Cheryls oldest daughter, Aimee, was only recentlyinfluenced by her mothers cannabis use. She never smokedweed in high school.

I grew up around cannabis, so it wasnt some noveltyto me. It wasnt a milestone that I had to experience in myyouth, Aimee said. I actually tried cannabis for the first timea year ago on the ABC 20/20 shoot. It was through our

chef -- it was a cannabis infused meal, and I said Mom, youmight really be on to something here. Its not that stupidstoner high, it was like I feel good, happy and normal.

Before her cancer diagnosis, Cheryl was an opticianto celebrities. She compares coming out as a cannabisuser publicly to coming out in the LGBT community: youreout, youre out - and you have to take that stand. Herclients, whod dealt with her in confidence before, as well ascolleagues and close friends knew they could trust her withanonymity when asking for access to her cannabis garden.

Within an hour of telling her best friend she had agarden, her best friends husband called her and said , Oh myGod, Cheryl, Im so sorry you have cancer, thats terrible butI hear you have a marijuana garden, and thats so awesome.

He was the executive producer of a show calledWilfred, and coincidentally, he was was looking for someplants to use in the pilot of the series, and Cheryls plantswere hired for the role. They traveled all the way fromNorthern California to Los Angeles to appear in the show.

Cannabis was the last thing on earth I thought Iwould be doing, Cheryl said.

Mother and daughter bonded through Cherylscancer diagnosis, treatment, and remission. As grim as thediagnosis was, it was the impetus for their venture into thecannabis business.

There werent a lot of serious business people inthe can nabis i ndustry at that time. It just seemed to bea natural fit, Cherl said. When you consider the fact

that can nabis got a bad reputation because of lies beingtold about it, we said, Look, this is a simple rebrandingcampaign. Marijuana just has a bad reputation, its not abad plant. So we just went into action after that.

Mixing family and business seemed only natural forthese two. Cheryl says that Aimee is not only her daughter, but her business partner and her best friend. They bothlovingly agree they cant think of anyone else to go on this

    journey with.

Ive known you my whole my life, Aimee said toCheryl.

Running a family business has its challenges, butAimee says working together has helped them listen toeach other and hash out their ideas.

We also have a great therapist! In fact, our realityshow is going to start out with a therapy session with eachshow, Cheryl said.

Their TV show, airing in the fall on A&E, is going tobe directed by Morgan Spurlock. Unlike Weed Wars, WeedCountry, Marijuana Grow House, or any of the Housewivesshows, Cheryl and Aimee are approaching their show on adifferent level.

It wasnt long ago that youd go to a dispensaryand every edible there looked like it was made insomeones questionable kitchen. Without a consistentbrand or potency, knowing what dosage to expect wasa bit of a guessing game. One might even recall trying abatch of homemade brownies back in the day, feelingso much panic and anxiety that they vowed never toeat edibles ever again.

Those days are fading fast, with brand namessweeping the edibles market. States like Washingtonand Colorado instituted regulations requiring testingon every batch of infused edibles or topicals, andproper packaging and labeling of infused products, both medicinal and recreational. In the past, you hadno idea what the difference was between grams andmilligrams dosing, and if the product wasnt labeled

properly you had no idea what the edible was infusedwith. Lets not forget that one persons 2-3x dose is not

the same as the next persons dosing. Each personsbody will always metabolize THC differently. Now dosingis becoming a language the average connoisseurunderstands.
