The Revd Trevor writes……

There will be many like myself who, towards the end of last year, were overwhelmed with mailings from various aid agencies seeking contributions to good and worthy causes, some in the UK but many in other countries. If you’re like me, severe editing of these requests is a practical necessity. One of the aid agencies I support is the Barnabas Fund, an agency for the persecuted church, bringing hope to suffering Christians. A particular story in a recent magazine caught my eye. Here is an edited version of the story. It concerns ‘Gabriel’, a Christian pastor in Eritrea. He was first imprisoned in 1998 when he was rounded up, along with his church congregation, and jailed for a month. His jail term was extended to 3 years because he was a pastor. Like other prisoners he was given a small amount of food every 18 hours to sustain him through hours of manual backbreaking work. Bibles were strictly forbidden and any scriptural writing uncovered by the jail authorities resulted in severe punishment. ‘Gabriel’ told how he managed to keep the Book of Revelation, the last book in the Bible, from a torn up Bible under his bedding. This helped to sustain him, although at times he struggled with his faith. However in spite of the beatings he refused to deny the Lord Jesus who had laid down his life for him. He spent two weeks locked in solitary confinement in a metal shipping container. After many months in prison, weak and on the brink of starvation, his body racked with pain, ’Gabriel’ was tied to a chair and beaten over the head with a stick ‘’like an animal, like a donkey’’, he has said. This beating was inflicted personally by the colonel in charge of the jail in front of the other prisoners ‘’to make them afraid’’. ‘Gabriel’ was treated as a criminal because of his Christian faith and particularly because he was a pastor. ‘Gabriel’ was subsequently released but then became aware that there were plans to arrest him again. He fled from Eritrea to Kenya before eventually resettling in Australia. There are many similar stories from many countries – North Korea, Thailand, Iran, Sri Lanka, to name just a few. We pray in our intercessions for those persecuted for their faith and we do well to remind ourselves from time to time of these real–life stories like that of ‘Gabriel’. This is perhaps especially appropriate in the forthcoming season of Lent, a time often associated with self-denial. We can also embrace this season as a time of reaching out to others less fortunate or who find themselves in situations like

Page 6

that of ‘Gabriel’. Yes we can, and do, pray for them; we can also think about and act upon what we can do through the agencies which work to help them in the name of Jesus Christ. For example, in this parish we have in recent years given support in Lent to the WaterAid UK organisation which works to bring clean water to the many deprived parts of the world where drinking water, toilet facilities and hygiene are lacking, things which we so readily take for granted. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on 26th February with opportunities to worship in St Helen’s Church at 10am and 6.30pm with Holy Communion and also the Imposition of Ashes as a symbol of repentance for those who would wish to do so. Our services continue as usual throughout the season, together with regular opportunities for study and sharing. Details are to be found elsewhere in this edition of the Link. In these kinds of ways our spiritual life can be enhanced and prepare us for another season of rejoicing at Easter.

Come and join us.

Open Questions and Praying Different Ways So many people struggle or have questions about prayer that, rather than use a set course, for our Lent Groups this year I have put together a series looking at prayer. Although these will be stand-alone sessions each will inform and enrich the others. This year the sessions will be held on Wednesday mornings beginning at 10:45am for up to an hour and a half. After the first four sessions and for those who wish to stay a simple lunch will be served. The fifth session will take place in St Helen’s Church and will not be followed by lunch.

The groups provide an informal way of learning together, and of making friends. If you haven’t come before, why not try it? No one is ever ‘put on the spot’ and you can participate as much or as little as you want. The groups are open to all – a warm welcome awaits you. Each session is stand-alone so, even if you can only make one or two sessions, please come! Georgina

REVISION OF OUR ELECTORAL ROLL takes place between 9th

February and 22nd

March.

The Electoral Roll of the Church is different to the local government electoral roll that entitles us to vote in political elections. The Electoral Roll of our church is a list of people who consider themselves to be members of one of our three churches. So if you are not already on the Roll and come to St Helen’s, St Thomas’ or St John’s, even if it is not perhaps as often as you would like, please do add you name to our Roll by completing a form. And if you have attended in the past but are now housebound you are still very much part of our community so please do ask for and complete a form. Everyone is welcome and forms are completed by each individual - although you do have to be over 16 and baptised! You can be on more than one church electoral roll. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask.

The forms are available at the back of our churches or via our website. As a member of our community please complete the form with all the information and return to the Electoral Roll Officer Mike Kiddle or the Rector.

We do want our electoral roll to be an accurate depiction of our community so would be very grateful if you would take the time to complete a form and return it before the end of March.

World of Prayer Service: Friday 6th

March 2020, St. Helen's Church, Tarporley at 7.30p.m This year the service has been prepared by the women of Zimbabwe and they encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They encourage us to 'Rise, take up your mat and walk' with them as they continue their often turbulent journey towards reconciliation.

The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries it begins in Samoa and finishes in American Samoa more than 36 hours later. Please join us, refreshments will be served following the service.

All are welcome.

St.Helen’s has gone digital!

At the beginning of December last year we installed a contactless card reader in St. Helen’s to allow us to trial this new way of giving in the parish. We are all familiar with this type of transaction in our daily lives and the convenience it offers when shopping. The same convenience is now available to make donations as part of your giving to the church. It’s really easy to use (see right) and we are hoping it will become as familiar as dropping some cash into the collection plate. All the sidespersons are now trained in how to use it so help is at hand of you need it. It’s just as safe and secure as the transactions you make in the shops and your donation goes straight into the church bank account. We will be keeping an eye on how it goes over the next few months and would welcome any feedback from the congregation. If you make your financial contribution by Standing Order there is no need to do anything different – this is just an alternative to cash donations.

The winners of the January 200+ club draw are: First Prize £100 No. 163 – Mr I Mullock Second Prize £20 No. 55 – Mr P Neely Third Prize £10 No. 135 Mrs W Parker –

The 200+ Club is a fun and simple way of raising funds for St Helen’s. Each month on the second Sunday a draw is made and prizes of £100, £20 and £10 are given. It costs only £1 to have your number in each monthly draw (an annual subscription of £12). The proceeds, after the prizes are allocated, go to maintain the fabric of the Parish Church.

Curate’s Blog : January 2020.

Although the clock tells me it is midday, it is almost dark outside. The wind is blowing and the rain is peppering the windows. Another Christmas over, this is the perfect weather to be putting away the decorations, puzzling over which bauble goes in which box, wondering how on earth they got that many lights into such a tiny box, fearing that the tree will not last another year. How the time has flown since my first Christmas as Curate!

I remember smiling in the shop at the cards that said “Baby’s First Christmas”, thinking that I should send one to myself, for that is pretty much how I felt at the time. It was like seeing Christmas for the first time all over again. It was such a privilege to be involved in planning and helping to lead the bewildering mix of Nativity Plays, School Assemblies, Carol Concerts, Crib blessings and so many other celebrations. For me, one of the highlights was that freezing cold night when the High Street was closed to traffic but was filled with people of all ages, people of all faiths and none, all turning out to signal the start of the Christmas season. I shall never forget two tiny tots literally dancing on the spot with excitement.

It is strange to think that as Christians, we do it all to remember the birth of Jesus over two thousand years ago in a quiet little village in a quiet little country in the Middle East, where there was no snow. It is easy to lose sight of that fact over the years, to become cynical about the commercialisation of Christmas, or so sentimental about the Christmas spirit that putting away the decorations for another year becomes depressing, or in Church we become focussed on maintaining tradition. A curate friend of mine remarked on a WhatsApp group, “I wonder what Jesus makes of us singing the same carols and saying the same words every year?” I don’t think he minds one little bit. I love having family and friends sing “Happy Birthday” to me every year and I would miss it like mad if they didn’t. Same words, same rituals, but then we don’t put the Birthday boy away for another year and pretend that he doesn’t exist! I do continue to speak with friends and family (not enough I know, but I do my best)!

I believe that God is still active in this world, and God is still writing the Christmas story. He is still writing the story of what happened when Christ came into this world as the Prince of Peace, the Word made flesh, and he is still writing about what happened next. We don’t need to leave baby Jesus in the manger for another year. We can all be a part of the continuing story.

The baby born that night grew up to become an adult. When he did, and he was asked what God wants us to do, he answered “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbour as yourself.” (Continued overleaf)

In other words, don’t be a grumpy innkeeper who is so stressed at Christmas that he slams the door shut, declaring there is no room at the inn. Instead, open your heart, and let it all in.

Be that shepherd that comes running to see Jesus, and who carries the message into everyday life, albeit a life changed forever.

Be that tiny tot on the High Street, dancing with excitement.

Open your heart to Jesus every day and let the adventure begin.

Happy New Year. Julian
