July 2013 The youth are out of school and looking forward to the Summer break. We kicked off Summer by Rocking the Park at Carowinds on Saturday June 15. It was a great day with a high of only 85 degrees and a bit of a breeze. We opened the place up at 10 a.m. and headed straight for the Intimidator, one of the greatest thrill rides ever. Most, but not all of us hopped on board and had a great time. Ivey spent the entire ride laughing so loudly that I was afraid she wasn’t breathing. From there we hit the After Burner, Thunder Road, the water park, the Cobra and later enjoyed an great concert featuring Audio Adrenaline and Tenth Avenue North. It was a great time of worship. We have been learning from James the past month. We have learned the importance of being slow to speak and quick to listen. We learned that God never tempts us, although He will allow us to be tested (just like Job was). Equally important we learned that Faith without works is DEAD. I have watched our teens mature spiritually through this study. We are excited about what the Spirit has in store for us as we move through the second half of this study. Still to come this Summer we have several Destination Unknowns and a night that we will look into the dangers of Bullying. We will also reschedule an overnight camping trip (the closest thing to a lock in). We are excited to have a Bible Study for this year’s VBS. This is a great outreach opportunity, if you know of teens in your neighborhood, let me know and we will make sure to invite them. At the end of Summer we will be involved with a Mission effort in Red Springs, NC. Grace and Peace, Chuck

Allow me to jump into three other "Keys" to maintaining a healthy church from Kennon L. Callahan's Twelve Keys to an Effective Church. 1. Specific objectives 2. Shared pastoral and lay visitation 3. Dynamic corporate worship 4. Significant Relational Groups. This could include Sunday School classes, Bible Study Groups, and Mission

Groups. Small groups allow people to relate and connect. 5. Strong Leadership Resources. That means having a number of leaders who lead effectively. Sometimes

these folk are called, "go to " people. They bring out the best in others even as they facilitate leadership in others. They are not bullies or dictator types. They are Servant Leaders.

    6. Simple and Solid Decision Making. This involves formal and informal discussions with all members who choose to be a part of decision making. No closed shop meetings or behind closed doors decisions. Trust the people to make the right decisions when they have all the information that they need.

More next month. God bless each of you.

Dear Church Family, Thank you so much for your cards, calls, hugs and most of all your prayers during my sweet sister’s Eloise’s illness and death. How good it is to be a part of such a caring church. God loves you and I do too.

    Newsletter Deadline July 15

“Change is possible, but focus is required.”

“Better to do something about one thing than nothing about everything.”

“What does God want to do in me?”

Do any of those quotes sound familiar? Think back a few months. At the beginning of this year, about twenty people in our congregation decided to try something new and different. We did not make New Year’s resolutions. Rather, we decided to choose one word each to be our word for the year 2013. This word would help us to make choices, give us a new way of looking at things, and most importantly, reveal a fresh perspective about our lives. We decided not to see what God could do for us, but rather, what God wants to do in us. That is discipleship in action! Here are some of our words:

    SELAH SHINE FOCUSED SURRENDERED CONSISTENCY

POSITIVE STUDY PATIENCE GROW TODAY POSSIBILITIES GUIDANCE ENCOURAGE FAITHFUL

    ORDER POSITIVE STUDIOUS LOVE WAIT

So, if you decided to do this this back in January, how are things going for you? Are you still trying to keep your word at the front of your heart? Is God teaching you something about yourself? Well, let me tell you, He sure is teaching ME some things I need to know! My word for 2013 was/is “ORDER.” I based this choice on Psalm 119:133: “Order my steps in your word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” Every single day since I chose this word, I have learned more and more about the things that God needs to change in my life. I needed to ask God to “order” each of my days – to help me put things in their proper “order” – to really try to do the things that matter each day. This was more than just deciding to prioritize or do better at time management. This is a heart issue – a true search to ask my Heavenly Father each day what He wills for

me to be about, especially being in His Word. Some days, I have done well, most days, I fall flat on my face! Every day I start out asking God to “order my steps” – and of course after one or two steps I often find myself falling off a cliff! But God’s grace is my safety net, and He catches me, sets me back up and helps me to start again. Sharing this with you is part of the accountability that we discussed and that is important in the life of disciples of Jesus. It has been six months since we started. I would love to hear from each of you about how God is working in and through you regarding your “word.” And for those of you who are reading this article and thinking, “Well, I didn’t do this in January,” then I say, do it now! Go ahead and choose a word for the rest of 2013 and see how God will change you! You are loved!
