In 1864 when Nicolaus A. Otto and Eugen Langen started N.A. Otto & CIE, neither man ever imagined that their small com- pany would grow to be one of the leading engine technologi- cal manufacturers today. The world’s first Atmospheric gas powered engine designed, manufactured and operated by Otto and Langen earned them a Gold Medal award in Europe. Some of their engineers who were trained and schooled at Deutz would later leave to start their own business ventures in the automotive market: Gottlieb Damilier (Mercedes Benz), Wilhelm Maybach (Maybach Automotive) and E. Porsche (Porsche Automotive). In the 1930’s, Deutz introduced the first Air-cooled diesel en- gine series to the world. This technology is still being used today to meet environmental standards. In 1988, Deutz introduced the first Oil-Cooled diesel engine series to the world. The Oil- cooled or Air-cooled diesel engine series offered original equipment manufacturers a compact, fuel efficient, and maintenance friendly engine package that met current and future emission requirements worldwide. In 1992, realizing that meeting future emission requirements would require major changes to the engine fuel systems and exhaust systems, Deutz designed and started manufacturing of their own fuel systems(MVS&DCR) and flexible ex- haust systems (DIVERT). These new technologies along with past technologies ensure that the small diesel company started in 1864, will continue to lead the world in meeting future emis- sion and fuel consumption standards.
