The October outing from the Forest Lake 50+ Club was to Noela’s Garden at Donnybrook for morning tea and garden tour followed by a picnic lunch on Bribie Island. Fifty-three members boarded our Concorde Coach and headed off with great anticipation on a beautiful October morning. On arrival at Noela’s Garden, we were welcomed by Noala Bishop, who had a scrumptious and plentiful morning tea all ready and waiting for us. Afterwards we were given an informative guided tour of their beautiful expansive gardens.

It was then time to leave that little piece of paradise and make our way to a lovely waterside park on Bribie Island for an enjoyable and relaxing picnic lunch. After a wonderful day, we then reluctantly made our way back to Forest Lake.

The Forest Lake 50+ Club Committee would like to extend a vote of thanks to all of its members for their generous contributions in support of the clubs donation of cash and goods to the ‘Farmers Relief Fund’.

Forest Lake 50+ Club meet on the third Friday of the month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am. New members are most welcome.

Current world issues have us all feeling a little off kilter, I think. It feels a little like you couldn’t throw a dart at a map of the world without landing on a country that is in the middle of a serious crisis.

I make a point of not watching the news every day; not because I want to be ignorant, but because I hear enough of it just going about my ordinary days that purposefully sitting down to watch it might just send me over the edge.

I spoke with two dear friends on two different occasions just recently. Both had wonderful ‘good news’ to tell me. Both these friends have had it pretty rough for quite some years, so I was overjoyed to hear that things were finally looking up for them.

It does something to us just to hear good news even if it doesn’t relate to us, doesn’t it? I found my mood lifted, I kept smiling remembering what they told me about and I found my thoughts focused on the good that was happening to them, rather than the ‘bad’ things that had happened to them in the past.

It’s no secret that dwelling on our troubles brings us down, as does dwelling on all the trouble in the world around us.

I have a bit of a rule: if I find out about a certain issue, I assess it to see if I can help. If I can, then I do. If I can’t, then I generally don’t focus on it.

Many of the problems we face in the world today, we can’t help solve. I, personally, can’t do anything about ISIS, or the US economy, the outbreak of Ebola or the unrest

in Syria.BUT, homelessness in my own city, human trafficking,

farmers doing it tough, children in Australia going to bed hungry each night - these are things I can help be part of the solution for. I may not be able to eradicate homelessness, human trafficking, or make it rain for the farmers, or ensure that every child in Australia is well fed, cared for and educated. But I can do something.

You see, worrying about world issues that we can do nothing about is pointless, particularly when there are many issues going on right around us that we can do something about.

It’s not about being ignorant of world events and global issues, it’s actually about being in touch with our skill set and our strengths that we can put to use for whatever need we see that we know we can affect.

If you’re concerned about what you’re watching on the world news every night, why not start focussing on the things you can do locally instead of worrying about all the things overseas that you, most likely, can’t change.

Take a look around you. What issues are happening right on your doorstep that you could get involved with bringing about a solution to?

Is everything the way it seems?A visit to your dentist for a checkup should be a simple painless

procedure. A full or comprehensive checkup takes more than a couple of minutes though so don’t expect to be in and out within 10 minutes.

Our job as dentists is to inform you (our patients) of what we see as dentists and the condition of your teeth, gums, bone, bite, fillings or other dental restorations and any other information that is related to those. One important point of a checkup or examination is for you to find out how your dental health is going.

Dentistry has improved considerably in the past few years and the available treatments have also improved considerably. There are many different ways of checking your teeth, gums, fillings etc nowadays.

One good way is via magnification of digital images. A lot of the time when we look at your fillings, for example, they appear fine to the naked eye. Once a digital image is taken and magnified, there may be things that can’t be seen like tiny cracks or fractures. Often this occurs with old fillings due to the natural breakdown and aging of the filling material or it may occur with grinding or clenching your teeth at night. However it happened, it is important to take it seriously. I always hear “but it feels fine and I don’t get any pain from it.” That certainly is the case if the crack has only just started and you may be lucky. Once a crack starts, it can’t repair itself so it really needs to be repaired properly. If a crack is left to continue it can lead to much more expensive dental treatment like endodontic treatment or implants.

So how do you know if you have a cracked tooth or filling? It usually starts to cause sensitivity when biting or drinking hot or cold drinks. It sometimes can wake you up at night if you grind or clench your teeth together heavily. It is not usually the same every day, so it appears to come and go. An x-ray is a good idea to make sure the crack hasn’t gone into the nerve or weakened the tooth too much, and so the best options for treating the crack properly can be decided. A magnified digital image is another way to see cracks especially if they are in old fillings. A diagnostic laser can also be used to check for cracks in teeth and in fillings. Sometimes a dye can be used to see a crack as well.

What about treatment? Well unfortunately it really depends on the tooth or filling in question and the bite and the gums and the bone and...lots of things actually. Everyone and every case is different so it is impossible to tell without seeing it and going through a series of thorough diagnostic checks along with x-rays etc. Guessing over the phone just won’t work. Your doctor doesn’t try and guess over the phone what is wrong and neither should your dentist.

If you think you might have a cracked tooth or filling, you should try and not bite anything on it (that sounds obvious doesn’t it?) and you should get your dentist to check it out properly.

Readers may remember local teenager Krista from the May edition of The Lake News. Krista had plans to walk the Kokoda track in September and we are happy to report she is back from her adventure with many stories to tell.

Together with 28 other hikers, and over 60 PNG porters, Krista endured the harsh conditions of the country and faced many challenges along the way.

“My greatest challenge was maintaining patience and a will to continue. Day in and day out you were hiking up mountains that do not even compare to Australian mountains, carrying a 15kg backpack when your body is already sore and exhausted, and it rains every afternoon without fail in PNG,” said Krista. “The most challenging part, though, was waking up in the morning and putting on stinky, cold, wet clothes in the darkness knowing exactly what you have to do for the rest of the day.”

Despite the challenges of the hike, the reward of arriving at a village each night where the hikers were greeted with a warm welcome, food and sometimes a performance from local dancers and singers. The group also had the opportunity to experience the history and cultural significance the country has to offer.

“I loved waking up at dawn for the Isurava dawn service. To have a dawn service at one of the major battle sites on such a beautiful mountain was surreal. I’d be lying if I said there were no tears.

“One of the days we had a presentation down at a rock where one of the Australian battle heroes, Bruce Kingsbury, had been killed. I sat down there by myself for a good hour reflecting and thinking about how the blood of so many men are held in the soils of such a beautiful place.”

For Krista the life changing trip won’t be forgotten, nor the many lessons learnt while there.

“I have had my fair share of problems but this experience has opened my eyes to a whole new world and since my return I have been so much happier, with myself and with my life in general.

“Most of the villages we visited consisted of hand built huts with no furniture. The children’s bellies were swollen with malnutrition. They had no means of entertainment other than each other, not even a ball to play with. We often gave them our food and I gave a frisbee to the family who had adopted me and they played with it for hours amazed that it “flies like a plane”. It provided so much happiness for the whole family and it made me realise how much, as a western society, we rely on such silly things to keep us happy. I don’t ever want to forget that lesson.”

Carole Park State School adopted the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program in 2013 and have been reaping the benefits in the twelve months since. The Kitchen Garden Program Syllabus has been designed to teach a set of skills to students through hands-on gardening and cooking activities, with the aim being to introduce pleasurable food education into as many Australian primary schools as possible.

The Program emphasises the flavours as well as the health benefits of fresh, seasonal food and dishes cooked reflect the vegetables, herbs and fruits grown, season-by-season, by the children in their organic gardens. For the 120 students who have been involved in the program, planting, tending, harvesting, preparing and cooking the vegetables and fruit has impacted many other areas of their learning.

“Students engagement in learning and attendance at school are the most significant benefits,” said Head of Curriculum, Renee Bond. “This program is run through the whole curriculum incorporating science, technology, numeracy, geography with a large focus on literacy, expanding vocabulary, reading decoding and comprehending. It also provides students with skills they can take home.”

An important part of the program are the volunteers who participate and assist the children each week. Anyone interested in volunteering needs a blue card and to be available for one to two hours on Tuesdays and are encouraged to contact the school on 3718 5333.

Our wedding anniversary falls on September 11, two years before the 9/11 attacks. I remember sitting up watching the news, waiting for my wife to arrive home from a late shift. I can remember the sheer disbelief that overcame me as I watched the second plane plunge into the Tower and the insufferable nerves as I waited for days with a co-worker for news of her son who was scheduled to have a meeting in the Twin Towers that morning (we later received news that he was safe).

I also remember the fear that descended on many of us. Something changed on 9/11 and the world has been a different place ever since. There has been a much greater sense of fear and uncertainty in our community – often fostered by some politicians and newsrooms.

In more recent times, we have seen a renewed sense of fear grip our community as we’ve observed the rise of ISIL and Australia-born terrorists. People are becoming suspicious of people of other ethnicities and other religions. This general fear is becoming dangerous because, to quote Yoda, “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

One of the reasons we don’t know how to resolve these feelings is that the great virtue of tolerance has come to mean agreement. So, as we hold up the virtue of tolerance to our community, we are fooled into thinking that we must also agree with everything that others believe – “If you don’t agree with my opinion, you are intolerant” has become the mantra.

However, tolerance has never meant that. Tolerance says, in the words of Voltaire, “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

This virtue goes to the heart of Australian culture. We value tolerance, peace, religious freedom, liberty of conscience and community. These are virtues that make Australia great and we owe many of them to Australia’s Judeo-Christian heritage. It was St Paul who wrote, “If possible, to the best of your ability, live at peace with all people.” (Romans 12:18)

So, rather than succumbing to a culture of fear, let’s imbibe our families with the values that make our nation a great one – tolerance, peace, freedom, and community. It starts in the home as we teach these values to our kids, and it continues in our schools, clubs, streets and community.

Year Twelve students from St John’s Anglican College developed their theme for the year around each school term.

The theme for Term One was ‘Preparation’ as they readied themselves for the year of work ahead. ‘Determination’ was the aptly named theme for Term Two, with students resolving to dig a little deeper into their studies. The theme ‘Supporting Others’ summed up Term Three as students encouraged and cheered each other on to continue the hard work needed to get them all over the line. Finally, Term Four is the ‘Celebration’ term and to start the intense but very short last phase of their school life the student celebrated with their senior formal.

“The students never, ever cease to amaze our school community,” said Principal Suzanne Bain. “The girls were all beautifully dressed and our boys were a dapper group of gentlemen.”

The group started their wonderful night at the serene Lakes Stage in Forest Lake with family photos and from there they travelled in limos and other various means to the Sofitel in the city.

The students had a wonderful night and have now started Term Four ready to take up the challenge of the remaining school weeks.

When Ann George and her friend started local charity Project: Love & Care in June 2005, they never dreamed that nine years later, over 43 000 Care Kits would be delivered to children entering foster care.

The charity now has over 700 volunteers across Queensland who donate time, money and resources to let children know they are cared for and matter.

“It is hard to count exactly how many volunteers we have as they do so much and do not always let us know who they are,” said Ann. “The supplies simply turn up at our door.”

Project: Love & Care was recently awarded the Community Initiative Award at Parliament House, which Ann accepted on behalf of the charity and the tireless volunteers who support it.

“We were delighted to be acknowledged for the work we do as our team of volunteers are rarely mentioned,” said Ann. “They are an amazing team of women and men who work selflessly to help children in need. We are very thankful for our award, it really belongs to all of us who serve the children of Queensland.”

If ever Ann and the volunteers are tempted to feel overwhelmed by the need in our communities, they take their inspiration and motivation from one special little boy.

“We have been inspired many times to keep going when supplies were short, our volunteers sick and there were too many children needing our help, by this simple story of a very grateful little boy. One morning a little six year old boy came to school with a quilt rolled up and

tucked under his armpit. The teacher said “John (not his real name) you cannot come into class with that quilt tucked under your arm, you cannot work with it there.”

“John replied “Yes! I can.” The teacher said, “Put it on the port rack outside.” John refused.“This went on all week until Friday until the teacher did not know what else to try, so she sent him to the Principal. The

principal was a kindly but serious man, he asked John, “Why do you have a quilt rolled up under your arm?” John did not answer. The principal asked again, “John, why do you have a quilt rolled up under your arm?” John looked at him and said, “Because someone who loves me made this quilt for me.”

“This little boy’s answer keeps us going. All who work for Project: Love & Care are dedicated to helping children in need who need our love and care. We have no colour, no religion, no boundaries, we simply assist children on their journey through life.”

The Forest Lake Junior Rugby Club (The Wasps) has plenty to celebrate with everyone having had great time at the end of season carnival and repairs to the clubhouse now completed.

The future is looking brighter for the Wasps after they received a Community Grant from The Heritage Bank, Forest Lake, which enabled the club to purchase two mobile light towers.

The light towers will be utilised by both the Forest Lake Wasps and Forest Lake Little Athletics to light up the field during training.

Following the serious arson attack on the clubhouse earlier this year, the club is looking for more sponsors to help them raise vital funds to ensure the continued success of the club.

Over the September school holidays road improvements were made along Grand Avenue outside Grand Avenue State School to improve safety for school students. This work was completed during the school holidays to ensure no impact on children when travelling to school. This work continues on my commitment to improve safety on local roads around schools.

For all the avid runners in our community, Parkrun will be launched in Calamvale District Park on Saturday 15th November. This will be the 100th Parkrun established so it will be an exciting day. Parkrun is a 5km timed event where runners are competing against their own personal bests. The runs will be held at Calamvale District Park, Ormskirk St Calamvale each Saturday from 7am. The Forest Lake District Junior Sporting Facility has now been repaired and re-opened. Forest Lake Little Athletics have their season in full swing and it is wonderful to see many local children engaging in an active and healthy lifestyle.

It was a pleasure to recently attend trophy presentation days for the Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union (Wasps) and the Lakers Netball Club. Congratulations to all players on a great season, you do our community and our local teams proud.

Lions ConventionFive members of the Forest Lake Lions Club attended the 201Q3

District Convention, 3-5 October on the lovely Bribie Island.The weekend was jam packed and some highlights of the convention included

promoting Lions Club projects, the Saturday night banquet and the “cake” auction (where Lions Christmas cakes are iced in a Christmas theme and then raffled off to raise funds). One cake sold for more than $400!

One of the new programs that the Lions are currently promoting is the Bikes for Life program. This program helps underprivileged kids by providing a new home to an unwanted bike. Bikes for Life will collect the bike and do any repairs or servicing that is needed and then pass it onto a grateful recipient. If anyone in the community has an unwanted bike, please contact me on 0421 281 718.

While at the convention I had the pleasure of meeting a ‘young’ man who has been a member of Lions International for 42 years, yes, 42 years! This man started his Lions career in Canada and has been a member of more than nine clubs across two continents and has spent these last 42 years helping those communities. As a new Lions member, I am total in awe of such commitment and hope that as a dedicated Lion I can spend as many years as this man helping my community.

Locally Owned & Run For 17 Years

This month the club had two games at St Lucia and Riverlakes. At St Lucia, we had 28 players turn out for the game full of expectation for a great game. However the course recently had its greens cored and sanded, so putting was a challenge to be polite. Nevertheless there were some members who rose to the challenge and posted some remarkable scores.

Winners on the day in A Grade were Mick Morley and R/U Steve Donnell; B Grade winner Alastair McCosh and R/U Ian Whiteley; C Grade winner Don Mitchell and R/U Steve McKay. The Long Drive winners were A Grade Colin Brooke, B Grade Mark McNaughton and C Grade Jean O’Brien. Nearest the pin winners were Don Mitchell and Ian Whiteley, with the nearest approach going to Brian Cruickshank.

For our second game at Riverlakes Golf Club, 24 members and one guest had the privilege to play one of the most challenging courses in Brisbane, and the course again presented in exceptional condition.

Winners on the day were: A Grade Steve Donnell and R/U Mick Morley; B Grade winner Alastair McCosh and R/U Pat Ayling; C Grade winner Jean O’Brien and R/U Graeme Frew. The Long Drive winners were A Grade Steve Donnell, B Grade Marc Steward and C Grade Caroline Nottingham. Nearest the pin winners were Steve Donnell and Dan McKay, with the nearest approach going to Kyle Fairweather.

At each game, our club Sherriff collects ‘fines’ from the members that go towards our end of year donation to the clubs chosen charity – The Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital Perinatal Research Clinic.

The Poppy Appeal contributes significantly to the fundraising work of the RSL. The largest fundraising activity of the Appeal is the sale of poppies beginning in late October each year.

Poppies are available in various denominations from $1 to $50 and the money raised is used to assist both current and former serving members of the Australian and Allied defence forces and their dependents when in need.

The RSL encourages all Australians to purchase a poppy and ‘Remember in November.’

If you are able to help by selling poppies for the Forest Lake Sub Branch please contact the Secretary Peter Foley on 0412 357 756. Stalls will be open at Forest Lake and Inala Centres from 28 October to 11 November inclusive.

The Richlands Cub Scouts were out and about over the school holidays, joining with the Joey Scouts for a Badge Busting weekend in the final week.

First, we took a day trip to the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens. This gave us the opportunity to practice our map reading skills by navigating the White Arrow Trail around the gardens. Along the way we studied the varied flora and fauna in the gardens.

Then, we took a tour of the Sir Thomas Planetarium to commemorate the anniversary of Neil Armstrong landing on the moon and to learn more about the universe around us. After that, we hiked up to the Australia Remembers Freedom Wall.

Finally, we went back to the Scout Den to make camp and cook dinner over the fire. After that action packed day, we awoke at dawn to break camp, cook breakfast over the fire and go on a ramble. All in all, it was one action packed, education-filled and funb weekend.

I would like to congratulate the National Seniors Branch of Forest Lake for their wonderful efforts through the Farmers Relief initiate.

Working with their sister branch in Calamvale, donations have been rolling in to support our hardworking farmers who are struggling with drought conditions across nearly 75% of our state.

The generosity of the Forest Lake community for their fellow Queenslanders is humbling.

I am very happy to be able to support this fantastic community effort by sponsoring the shipment of a number of pallets to our country cousins.

The new Prep to Year 6 school to be built in Pallara is a step closer with the setup of the site office by the contractor, Plenary. This new school is one of 10 new schools being built across Queensland to cater for future growth.

I was so pleased to be informed by the President that the Forest Lake Junior Rugby Union Club had been successful in their application for funding from the Heritage Bank Forest Lake to purchase the mobile lighting units that they are currently using.

It is through these community connections that I was able to suggest that the club apply for funding from the Heritage Bank Community Grants.

Hello ReadersIn just a few short weeks Year 12 students from schools all over Australia will graduate. There will be lots of celebrations leading up to this exciting period in their lives and some sad farewells as they leave the environment which as been a significant influence in their formative years. They will no doubt miss their teachers and friends with whom they have studied and played for many years and the routines they have developed.

Idiopathic epilepsy is a disorder of recurring seizures of unknown cause. In dogs, a genetic or inherited influence has been proven for some breeds. All diagnostic tests used to search for the causes of seizures are normal in animals with idiopathic epilepsy. Idiopathic epilepsy is a common cause of seizures in dogs, but it is uncommon in cats.

It is theorised that an imbalance in brain chemistry causes excessive stimulation, which results in seizures. Idiopathic epilepsy typically affects dogs from one to five years of age but may develop at any age.

Pets with idiopathic epilepsy have recurring seizures. Most seizures last one to three minutes, and they can occur at any time of the day. Time between seizures can be as short as minutes or as long as months. Affected pets are normal between seizures and do not have any neurologic abnormalities on physical examination.

Seizures can take many different forms. The most common form is a generalized seizure or a grand mal seizure and the following may occur – your pet may become unconscious and unresponsive, it may fall or lie down, their legs are often rigidly stretched out or drawn up toward the body, the limbs may jerk or paddle as if running and chewing motions, excessive salivation, urination, and defecation may occur.

The diagnosis of idiopathic epilepsy requires eliminating all other diseases that can cause seizures by doing physical and neurologic examinations, routine laboratory tests on blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and imaging. Pets with idiopathic epilepsy have normal test results.

Treatment is aimed at preventing all future seizures. This is not always possible. Several antiepileptic drugs are available to control seizures. Dosages vary and are adjusted upwards depending on seizure control. Side affects can occur and blood tests monitor these every six months. Pets that are well controlled on anticonvulsant medications can live normal lives. The prognosis is guarded for pets with poorly controlled seizures.

It is important to see a veterinarian immediately if more than one seizure occurs in a 24 hour period, if seizure activity continues beyond five minutes, or if recovery of consciousness and behaviour is not complete between seizures.

Last month, we had Councillor Angela Owen-Taylor, our local Brisbane City Councillor for the Parkinson Ward, as our special guest. She informed us that the long-awaited community hall will be going ahead but the design had not been finally formalised. There will be a large space that can be converted through the use of sliding doors to accommodate multiple groups. A kitchen facility will be installed as well as a lift. The complex will be for the strict use of the local community only.

The Councillor further informed us that the culprits allegedly responsible for the arson attack on the Forest Lake District Junior Sporting facility had been apprehended and are in custody awaiting trial.

Working closely with the RSL, there are plans afoot for a local celebration commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign. She did call on us to support our local businesses and gave us a brief rundown of all her other community activities viz. hosting two Citizenship Ceremonies in September. She invited members to contact her office regarding any local issues that required attention. She always does give feedback. She was plied with a plethora of questions.

On Sunday 5th October, Probians boarded the train at Richlands en route to Roma Street station where the steam train was waiting to take us on a trip to Pinkenba and back. We were in the first class carriage, built in 1902 and today is the most modified carriage in the fleet. It was a pleasant experience as Probians could reminisce about days gone by, their youth and how much had changed. In spite of the inconvenience and hassle getting to Roma Street, as a car had damaged the Milton bridge and we were bussed from Milton to Roma Street, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Lunch was at Melange in the Roma Street Gardens.

The October guest speaker was David Gibson OAM who delivered a historical account of the History of Queensland and how it all came into being. Using skilful mirth he held the attention of Probians with his vast knowledge of this state. He also employed quiz questions to keep members on their toes. Some of the topics covered included the Coat of Arms of Brisbane and Queensland, important people, the significance of buildings including Aboriginal suburbs names. We soon realised how little we knew about our state. President Joan displayed her knowledge and won a prize which was a magazine titled History of Queensland to which David is a contributor. Kevin passed the vote of thanks.

October’s meeting was at our new meeting place, Lions Soccer Club. Everyone enjoyed a nice morning tea and catch up with friends. A special treat was a great performance by Romain. What a fantastic voice. We all loved it.

Four Branches of National Seniors from Calamvale, Centenary, Sunnybank and Forest Lake joined forces to once again help the farmers. A stall to donate non perishable items was held outside Coles Supermarket, Forest Lake Shopping Centre last month. Cash donations and lots of non perishable foodstuffs, books, linen, toys, toiletries, stationery, clothing, lovely crocheted items from the Forest Lake Crochet Group, many other Seniors Groups in the district and far afield as well, were handed over in the spirit of giving as we Australians do. The response was overwhelming and some of the donations have already been freighted out to St George for distribution. St George Freightlines at Rocklea have generously transported these donations free of charge. Thank you to Forest Lake Shopping Centre, Coles, Heritage Bank, many businesses and the generous citizens in our community for their wonderful support. To our band of volunteers, you have been truly amazing and we thank you all.

I am happy to report that all 41 members and friends had a great day on the Toowoomba trip for the Carnival of Flowers. Put this on your must do list for next September.

BYO picnic and fun and games day at Oxley Common, Sherwood Road, Rocklea recently had everyone in high spirits with some of the eager players hoping to win the gold or silver cup in the bocci or thong throwing competitions. Why does everyone else’s picnic lunch look yummier that yours? Good company and great fun.

Put in your diary, Wolston House, Grindle Road, Wacol Open Day Sunday 23 November. National Seniors Forest Lake will have a stall there. Come along and join in the festivities.

A small group of members are taking a trip to Norfolk Island for a few days in November. Maybe a spot of Christmas shopping? Should be lots of fun with a great itinerary all planned and booked through National Seniors Travel.

Who is organised for Christmas this year? We are looking forward to Christmas Lunch and Entertainment on Wed 10 December and on the 18 December a Christmas Lights Bus Trip.

With the festive season fast approaching, now is the time to get the garden looking great for the series of BBQ’s, parties and celebrations that roll around at this time of year and don’t we just love it!

I’ve been waiting for spring and now it is almost over as the hotter days of summer will soon be with us. Hopefully the storm season will put some water in our tanks. The last few months have been dry however our ‘drought tolerant’ plants don’t seem to mind as they still fill our gardens with colour. November is a nice time to enjoy your garden...get into it, and get the most out of it!

Last month, we had our last bus trip for the year and what a trip! From the many items we loaded into the bus upon leaving Eumundi Markets, I’m sure the members were able to cross off many items from their Christmas lists and there will be many more native trees/shrubs growing in Forest Lake after our visit to the Fairhill Native Nursery.

Have a good look at your grafted fruit trees throughout November, and if there are any shoots appearing below the graft, it’s best to remove these at once. Your tree will thank you for it. When fertilizing your trees, remember to cover the area covered by the tree canopy and don’t mulch right up to the tree base, leave an area of about 20cm clear.

Last month our guest speaker was Helen Rattenbury who informed us on the many types of geraniums or maybe I should say pelargoniums. From the many plants she discussed and had on display there were only two ‘true’ geraniums. How many ‘true’ geraniums do you have?

At this month’s meeting, Carol Kerkin will be our guest speaker and will have some plants for sale at low prices. More importantly this meeting will be our last at the Community House as from February 2015 the club meeting will be held during the day. The new venue will be the Community Life Centre in Ellen Grove. Meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of the month (except January). Morning Tea will be served at 9.30 am and the meeting will commence at 10am. Watch for further details in the coming editions of The Lake News. Remember to tell your friends and neighbours that the meetings will be during the day in 2015.

Why not come along to this month’s meeting? After the guest speaker we will be having a break-up function and from what the committee ladies have on the menu, I recommend you don’t have dinner. Hope to see you there and share a cuppa and a friendly gardening chat.
