This will be a morning event (kind of a mini retreat) followed by a lunch where we reflect together as a fraternity and rejuvenate our spirit. We plan on including sister councils in our area. The other area that I believe we can improve is with our recruitment of new members. I ask that everyone make an attempt to “try” to recruit just one new brother. Surely, you know a Catholic gentleman that may be interested. Just send him my way or give his contact info to our membership Chairman, Tony DiFede. Grand Knight’s Comments

Brother Knights,

A Happy New Year or make that Happy New Fraternal Year! It’s hard to believe we have completed another chapter in the great works of the Monsignor James R. Jones Council 3303. I survived as your Grand Knight, I think? I am so proud of all my Brother Knights and grateful for the support of your wives, families, and of course our Widows who have sacrificed time and talents for the good of the Knights and our local community. It was great to relax and be with everyone as we closed out the fraternal year with our Family Picnic. Please enjoy your summer plans and travels and stay cool this summer as I welcome your continued support as we try to make the 2019 - 2020 another successful year.

We kick off again with our Installation of Council Officers Ceremony on July 21st. The vast majority of Council Officers will remain in place for a 2nd term with a few exceptions. I want to personally thank our 3 trustees: Phil Nassef, Clark French, and Dick Dodson for all the sound help and guidance during my 1st year. I also want to highlight the efforts of our Financial Secretary - James Knickerbocker, and Treasurer/Bingo - Chairman Doug Uhland for doing such a wonderful job with our budget. We finished a challenging year well above budget and that allowed us to significantly increase our charitable donations. Family of the Month – June

Ubiquitous comes to mind when describing the contributions of Ralph and Geri Aviles, June's Family of the Month.

Involved in many Knight activities, they seem to be everywhere.

Both Ralph and Geri hail from New York City. After high school, Ralph enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from 1966

to 1968, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. After returning to the states, Ralph studied electronic at the RCA Institute

in New York for two years, and then worked 27 years for Xerox.

He and Geri lived in Rhode Island for 18 of those years, and after retiring, they moved to New Bern where they have lived

for the past 13 years.

Early in their married life, they adopted an infant daughter from Russia. She is now 27 years old, a college graduate working

for the Pitt County government.

Ralph likes to fish and play golf in his free time. The rest of the time he devotes to the Knights. He has his 4 th Degree,

works the yard sale, cooks at BINGO on Monday nights, serves as the Assembly’s Faithful Navigator, and volunteers at

the Red Cross.

Geri worked in banking for 45 years and now devotes her time to the yard sale, volunteering at the hospital, and engages

in the literacy program.

Between the two of them, this selfless Catholic couple goes about doing good in a quiet and dignified way, setting an

example for all with whom they interact.

It is an honor for the council to name them as the Family of the Month.

The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. with a complimentary meal catered by the Flame Restaurant of New Bern to follow at 4 p.m. There will be a short social time in between. Wives and Widows are invited. We hope to see you all there.

Knights and Families welcome summer in with a Family Picnic

On the warm Sunday afternoon of Father’s Day, The Knights hosted our 2nd annual family picnic “Indoors” at the Columbus Club Hall.

Like last year, grill master and PGK Phil Nassef (and his most capable assistant Mark Layel), grilled up his delicious assortment of hamburgers and hotdogs. Of course, we had plenty of side dishes, cold drinks, beer & wine as well as ice-cream sandwiches.

It was good to see so many of our widows in attendance too. New this year, was Brother Karl Algauer and his amazing sound system. Karl played many of our favorite tunes from the 60s up to the present-day sounds. Nice job, DJ, Karl!

We also had a lively game of Corn Hole and lots of great comradery and free K of C Koozies.

Thanks to all who attended this enjoyable event.

Sir Knight of the Month – June

Our selection for Sir Knight of the Month for the Month of May is SK John Jaskolka.

John’s participation and contributions over the years are well known to the members of Assembly 1820. Unfortunately,

the write-up submitted by our Faithful Captain has appareently been misplaced by the editor during his travels and will be

included in the next edition of the Knightlighter (upon the return of the Faithful Captain from his vacation).

Congratulations, John, you deserve the honor of Sir Knight of the Month for June 2019!

We are looking for men to join the St. Paul Prison Ministry team. We are currently providing visits to several local jails and

prisons. If you can commit 1 evening a month at one of the jails, we could certainly use a few more volunteers. These visits

are typically no longer than 1 hour, and you and your partner are in the cell block with the inmates while they remain in

their cells. A typical visit includes a scripture reading (usually from the readings of that Sunday’s Mass), a brief reflection

which is provided for you (unless you prefer to offer your personal witness or testimony) and taking prayer requests and

requests for bibles. There is a 1-hour orientation which you will have to attend prior to getting “on board” but that is all that

is needed. We have found that these men are anxious to get whatever contact they can from the “outside world”. But I

have found this ministry to be personally uplifting when I meet men who still have faith and hope in the Lord despite their

present circumstances. If you would like to learn more about this important ministry, please contact Deacon Jim Hackett

at [email protected]

Faithful Navigators Report

Greetings Brother Knights. I hope everyone and their families are doing well and

enjoying the hot, sticky summer weather we are having.

I would like to take this time to congratulate Phil Nassef and his Yard Sale team

and all the volunteers that contributed to a very successful June Yard Sale. A big

thank you to all the people that contributed their time and energy for a great cause,

the “truck monkeys” that pick up and unload all the furniture and the multitudes of

boxes that are donated. To all the ladies that come in several times a week to

unpack these boxes, price the contents, and put each and every item on the

shelves. To the gentlemen that are in charge of the various depts. and the ones

that help unload and distribute items to the various depts. A big thank you to all

the people that work in the kitchen cooking lunch every day the week of the yard

sale and to all the bakers and providers of the delicious desserts that we all so

thoroughly enjoy. Thank you , thank you, thank you! Because of your dedication

the Knights can continue their work serving the community.

This is an invitation to all Knights of our Assembly and Council 3303. The

Assembly’s Officer Installation will be Sunday, July 14th at the Copper Ridge

Banquet Center located at 2706 Old Cherry Point Road. All Officers will meet at

the Copper Ridge at 3:15PM. The Installation Ceremony will begin at 4:00PM.

Social hour will begin after the completion of the ceremony. Dinner will be served at 6:00PM. There will be a $30.00 charge

for our members while the wives attend at no cost. The rising cost of this event makes it necessary to charge this amount.

Please make checks payable to the Knights of Columbus Assembly #1820 and mail to George Halyak, 320 Plantation

Drive, New Bern, NC 28562. His phone number is 252-637-9225. He will call you if he doesn’t hear from you.

The meal selections are: Filet Mignon Wrapped in Bacon / Lime Zest Salmon / and Grilled Herbed Chicken Breast.

All entrees will be served with roasted whole red baby potatoes, green beans almondine, and yeast dinner rolls with butter.

Dessert is Chocolate Caramel and Cream Trifle with Heath Bar Crunch and Pirouette.

The final date for reservations is Tuesday July 9, 2019. If you wish to attend, please call George Halyak as soon as

possible with your meal choice. Please do not wait until the last minute. This is usually a great event.

A big thank you to all the Color Corps and Officers who have already purchased their new uniforms. To assist these

individuals with the purchase of them, the Fourth Degree will be having a Shrimp Boil Fundraiser on Friday, August 2nd.

Bill Stanton will be chairing the event and will have ticket information out in the very near future.

God Bless our Veterans and all our Men and Women in the Armed Forces and their families.

Successful Summer Yard Sale finishes off the Assembly Fiscal Year

The third Yard Sale of the year finished off a very

successful year for Assembly 1820. Given the fact

that the year included the devastating impact of

Hurricane Florence, the fact that we were able to

beat our budgeted income by $20,000 is really

unbelievable. Thanks once again to the volunteers

who support this fundraising effort. Some work

several days a week, some a day a week, some

occasionally, and some during the sale itself – all

of their efforts are critical to the successful

outcome of the event and the financial viability of

the Assembly.

When we discovered that there would be limited

participation of the Marine volunteers because of

other commitments, the word went out and

volunteers from the Assembly and Council showed

up to assemble the tents, set up the inventory,

conduct the sale, load up the dumspter, and pack

the tents away.

Yard Sale Chairman Phil Nassef wanted to reiterate his thanks to everyone who helped with the June yard sale. The heat

was bad, the crowds were large, and the work was hard. Here’s hoping that the next one will be a lot cooler. Once again

from the bottom of his heart - THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS.

Know Your July 4th Catholics: Charles Carroll

When celebrating Independence Day, take a moment to remember Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737–1832). Though not typically mentioned as a founding father, he might as well have been, given his outstanding contributions. So how many of the following do you know about the pioneering political Catholic?

• He was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence.

• In fact, he was the last surviving signer of the Declaration.

• Perhaps obviously, he also served on the Second Continental Congress.

• He was asked to accompany Benjamin Franklin on his diplomatic mission to Canada.

• During this journey he kept a journal, which is still studied by scholars today.

• His cousin, Fr. John Carroll, also went on that trip.

• That same cousin would become America’s first Catholic bishop.

• He’s referred to as Charles Carroll of Carrollton to distinguish him from his father, Charles Carroll of Annapolis (1702 – 1782), one of the richest people in Maryland and a well-known Catholic.

• He was educated at the second school opened by the Jesuits in the colonies.

Knight of the Month – June

Brother Stanley P. Namowicz, Jr. is the Knight of the Month for June 2019. Stan attained his 1st Degree in August 2014

and he moved quickly to attain the 3rd Degree in November of the same year. In the past five years Stan has held two

officer positions in our council. He was the Recorder for Fraternal Years 2015 thru 2018. He has been the Warden for FY

2018-2019 and will continue in that position for another year.

Three years ago, Stan stepped in to fill a void when our lead for supporting the Special Needs Community had to relocate

to another state. In that role Stan has successfully led Council 3303 support of the annual Special Olympics spaghetti

dinners and ARC awards dinners. These two dinners provide an opportunity for hundreds of our special needs community

members to come together to celebrate their accomplishments. Stan coordinated with local businesses to provide

substantial support for these events. Proceeds from ticket sales have also been returned to the ARC organization and the

Special Olympic organizations in Craven, Pamlico and Jones counties.

Stan has been a steady contributor in the kitchen for the Bingo Team and he has helped to support the Assembly Yard

Sales with a focus on his experience in repairing bicycles. Stan is also the lead for the Bicycle Ministry of New Bern. In

the past year he has accepted over 100 gently used bicycles, personally refurbished them and arranged for them to be

donated to citizens in New Bern who need them for transportation.

We are proud of the accomplishments of Brother Stan Namowicz and we are pleased to honor him as our Knight of the

Month.

Paying Tribute to 19 Brother Knights who have entered Eternal Life

On Sunday May 26th, we gathered near the Alter to pay our proper

Fraternal Tribute to the memory of 19 Brother Knights, who in

accordance with the will of Almighty God, after exemplifying their

love and devotion to his Church and our beloved country, have

preceded us into Eternal life. Our Worthy Chaplain, Father Rob

Schmid offered prayers and lead the tribute to these 19 exemplary

Catholic Gentlemen who departed this earth since May 2018.

Assembly Officers Installation Event

On Sunday, July 14th at 4:00 pm, Assembly ssembly #1820 will hold its Installation of Officers at the Copper Ridge Banquet Center located at 2706 Old Cherry Point Road . This is a departure from past installations that took place at St Paul’s Church, which will eliminate driving to two locations. The installation ceremony will begin at 4:00 pm, with a Social hour immediately following and dinner served at 6:30 pm. We ask that all attendess arrive by 3:45 pm to avoid disruption of the installation ceremony. Another change this year is we are going to have to charge our members $30.00 for dinner, while the wives attend at no cost. Unfortunately, the rising cost of this event precludes us from not charging something!

Those interested in attending the event should notify SK George Halyak, who can be reached at (252) 637-9225 and mail their payments (made payable to Knights of Columbus Assembly #1820) to his home address at 320 Plantation Drive New Bern, NC 28562. The final date for reservations is Tuesday, July 9th. Meal selections are: filet mignon wrapped in Bacon, Lime Zest Salmon, Grilled Herb Chicken Breast, Green Beans Almondean, Roasted Whole Red Baby Potatoes, and Premium Yeast Dinner Rolls with Butter.

Please do not wait until the last minute to make your reservation as this is usually a very well attended event and space is limited.
