Grand Knight’s Comments
Brother Knights,
First, let me say that I am truly honored and
humbled by your confidence in me as I begin
my time in serving as your next Grand Knight.
Our outgoing Grand Knight, Philip Nassef, has
done a tremendous job in leading and
strengthening the Monsignor James R. Jones
Council over the last 2 years. He has lead by
example and has made every event that he has
been a part of very special. Thank you, Brother
Phil and your lovely wife Frances for all of your
incredible dedication to Council 3303. I have
big shoes to fill and hope to keep the
momentum going. See more on Phil later in
this edition of the Knightlighter.
A few years ago, I was contacted by our dear
late brother Jim Whetzel, who asked me if I would like to serve as Deputy Grand
Knight. I was initially a bit hesitant, but realizing Jim’s desire to see younger
brothers step into roles within the council, I couldn’t resist. As one of our recent
past Grand Knights, Jim was an inspiration to us all. I hope to honor his memory
in my deeds and actions as Grand Knight.
Since joining the Knights, I have been awed by the amazing charitable works
our Council has contributed to the many worthy causes in our local area. The
dedication, hard work, and hundreds of volunteer hours put in by you, the
Brother Knights of Council 3303 and your wives, have been nothing short of
incredible. I pray that we can all continue our good works with Saint Paul
Catholic Church, support Catholic education, and contribute even more to the
many worthy charities in Craven and nearby counties.
Special thanks to all my fellow Council Officers for the 2018 - 2019 Fraternal
Year. I look forward to serving with you as we march forward into a new year
with a strong relationship with Saint Paul Catholic Church. I ask each brother to join us at the Monsignor James R. Jones
Council 3303 Installation of Officers Ceremony and Dinner on Sunday, Aug 5th. I am always open to your ideas and
guidance as we seek to get more brothers involved. Enjoy the summer with your families.
Vivat Jesus!

The Shadow of Goodbye is the Risk of Loving
Over the past several months we have mourned the passing of too many loved ones, especially from within the ranks of
our Knights of Columbus Council 3303 and Assembly 1820 community here at St. Paul Catholic Church. Even within the
body of Christ, even when we hold each other in faith and love, the death of a loved one can be excruciatingly painful.
Someone once said, “The shadow of goodbye is the risk of loving.” We’ve all experienced it. The Mass of Christian Burial
is intended to celebrate the life of a departed dear one, and it should be. Whenever we celebrate the consecration of the
bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ at Mass, we commemorate in an uplifting way that Jesus becomes part
of us in our reception of the Blessed Sacrament; that He shed His blood for our sins by dying on the Cross, and He
overcame death by rising from the tomb three days later. In Matthew 28:19 we read that after rising from the dead and
before returning to Heaven, Jesus promised His apostles he would never abandon them; that through His Holy Spirit He
would walk with them – and each of us - in the garden of our heart.
God has known and loved you and me for all eternity. As part of His sovereign plan of salvation for each of us, Our Divine
Creator has always known the day and hour we would be born, and the day and the hour each of us will be summoned
from this world. Facing one’s own mortality is about attitude. My own sense of invincibility vaporized at the age of 44 when
I found myself facing unscheduled major surgery and answering questions in pre-op for the first time about a Living Will
and Health Care Power of Attorney. The Jesuit magazine America asked readers on social media, what does a ‘good
death’ mean to you? Seventy percent of the respondents said they had prepared an advanced directive or living will, which
described their desires regarding medical treatment in case they could not express informed consent. Eighty seven percent
indicated they had expressed their wishes regarding end-of-life care with family or friends. Fifty-nine percent said they had
written or spoken about their wishes for their funeral liturgy. In describing a ‘good death’ many referred to family / friends
in their answers: “allowing one to tie up loose ends with relationships and allowing one to face the end of one’s life confident
that your loved ones will go on with life with little pain without you.” Many included the Last Rites and “to be at peace with
God and know that my loved ones know how much I loved them.”
Every morning I open my eyes is a blessing; another chance to do God’s Will, to get it right. Like many of my 75-year-old
peers, I feel like a walking pill bottle, or take twice the time to do stuff, if I can still do it at all. Looking in the mirror, it’s
pretty obvious, what ain’t broke has already fallen off. But that’s OK, God isn’t done with me – or you yet. A good day is
still one without a doctor’s appointment, topped off with a bowl of ice cream. Which reminds me, last week the Holy Spirit
informed this pilgrim that if I still want to get to Heaven, I’m going to need my cane to help me finish my journey.

Family of the Month - June
Family of the Month of June 2018 is Louise and George Halyak.
George has been a faithful member of our council for many years. He was responsible for publicity for several years and
is also a Sir Knight who served for five years as the Faithful Purser for the Assembly. George successfully handled our
Shrimp Boil for a number of years and worked on the setup crew and in the kitchen at almost every function held by the
Council.
Likewise, Louise is always at the Council functions decorating, setting up the hall, serving food, and helping in every task
where needed. Louise and George also volunteer their time at St Paul’s Catholic Church.
When it comes time for the yard sale, George (former yard sale chairperson) and Louise are always there spending many
volunteer hours checking out the electrical items donated and sorting the materials received for display. Their efforts help
significantly to ensure the success of the event
We thank both George and Louise for being a member of our Council, Church, and Community.

Sir Knight of the Month – June
The Kenneth I. Parker Assembly 1820 would like to recognize Craig Baader as Sir Knight of the Month for June.
Congratulations Craig!
Craig has been a longstanding and very active member of the Knights of Columbus.
Craig is currently President of the Columbus Club. He was responsible for the much - needed renovation of the Knights of
Columbus Hall and was there from start to finish insuring that it was done properly. He also makes sure the maintenance
is kept up on the buildings and has had new awnings installed to protect people from the elements. He also oversees the
rental of the Knights Hall for parties, weddings, and such.
Craig is also involved with the much needed repair of the ceiling drywall of St Paul's Church.
Craig is also the Editor of the Knightlighter, the official publication of the Msgr. James R. Jones Council 3303 and Kenneth
I. Parker Assembly 1820 which keeps the Knights up to date on monthly happenings.
Craig is also involved in Bingo and is there just about every Monday night along with the kitchen crew keeping the bingo
players happy.
Craig is also a major asset to the Fourth Degree Yard Sale, from being an advisor, a truck monkey, and a go between the
Knights and the Marines at Cherry Point. Craig made sure we would always have their help if they were available. Craig
and his wife Pat would go pick up any of the Marine volunteers that were able to come, supply them with a good breakfast,
and ferry them back to base at the end of the day.
Pat Baader is also involved in many different aspects of the Yard Sale especially running the Christmas/Holiday tent.
Craig is also currently serving as Faithful Comptroller for the Fourth Degree where he has done a top-notch job keeping
the rest of us in order.
Craig and his lovely wife Pat moved to New Bern from Maryland several years ago. It was Maryland's loss and our gain.
A great big thank you to both you and Pat. Congratulations to Craig for a job well done!
God Bless,
Ralph Avilas

Family Picnic – June 10th
As a good idea and a farewell gesture by our outgoing
Grand Knight - Phil Nassef, the Council held a Family
Picnic on the beautiful late Sunday afternoon, of June 10th.
The cookout was attended by many Knights and their
families as well as our three visiting summer Seminarians.
The event was held from 4 to 7pm with Phil grillin up some
delicious burgers and hotdogs with all the fixin’s. Special
thanks goes out to Nick and Liz Dalessandro, Craig and
Pat Baader, Doug Uhland, Don and Jean Hanson for all
their support of the picnic.
A good time was had by all including the “grand-youngins”
(oh no – I’m starting to sound like Phil!). We hope to hold
a family picnic again next year with games for the kids.

Faithful Navigators Report
I make this my last Faithful Navigators report and it comes with mixed feelings.
I’m glad to see us heading to another year with an increased budget full of giving to
our parish community and local charities. I know you will be in good hands with
Brother Ralph Aviles at the helm.
Which brings me to my next order of business. As I have mentioned many times
before, if it wasn’t for our volunteers we wouldn’t be the Assembly we are today.
Ralph along with the truck monkeys, and most of all our gentlemen and lady
volunteers make our yard sale what it is. So, “Thank You Everyone” and great job
Ralph! As Ralph takes the Faithful Navigators helm, we will have a new Yard sale
chairman…Phil Nassef. Please give Phil the support that he needs going forward to
ensure the success of our primary fundraising activity.
I wouldn’t be involved with our Assembly as an officer if it wasn’t for Jim Whetzel, as
he caught me in Walmart one day and asked if I would take the role of scribe. Being
young and ill-informed, I said Yes. Well that spot soon was filled so I was moved to
the Faithful Pilots Chair for the next year....Wow, wait a second.
In retrospect, I’m glad Jim cornered me in Walmart that day and provided me with
the opportunity it gave me to serve our Church, Clergy, and Community. Most important of all, I got to know Jim a little
better, and I’m a better man for it. May God continue to shine his face on Rose Marie and may he continue to bless our
Country and Assembly.

Thank you from Danny Gennantonio, St. Joseph’s Cemetery Coordinator: Thank you to the following 4th and 3rd
degree Knights and wives, who placed 235 flags on all Veterans’ graves in St. Joseph’s Cemetery the Thursday before
the Memorial Day weekend, as well as the 27 large flags on the walkways of the church and cemetery:
Craig Blackwell, Kevin Blust, Bill Camp, Tony Difede, Bill Elliott, Clark French, Tom & Paula Hartman, Melvin Henry, Phil
Nassef, Richard Plezia, Louis Simon, Bob Sisco, John Jaskolka, Doug Uhland, & Joe Urbaniak.
SK Joe Urbaniak and I are the only two volunteers left from our list of helpers in 2006, so I am very grateful for all
who have stepped up these last 12 years. Our Assembly has been honoring our veterans in St. Joseph’s Cemetery
since 1988.
RETIRE WITH THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
During our working lives, there are probably few financial matters we give more thought and attention to than our retirement. We want to make sure that once we finally stop working, we don’t have to stop living the way we want to.
Retirement income can be a tricky thing to calculate, especially with the changing landscape of federal and employer provided benefits. However, with careful planning and smart decision-making, you can remove much of the financial uncertainty from your retirement years and eliminate the headache-inducing guesswork. The Knights of Columbus can help you establish a plan.
With a properly structured retirement annuity from the Knights of Columbus, you can have retirement income that you cannot outlive, guaranteed. It provides peace of mind that most of us hope to achieve.
The Knights of Columbus offers a variety of annuity plans that are available to you and your family. All of our annuity plans can be customized so that you can select the best options to fit your retirement needs. Once a Knights of Columbus annuity has been established, the money continues to earn value, before eventually disbursing according to the options you elected.
In the United States, we offer traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and non-qualified plans, which are available as both single premium and flexible premium annuities. In addition to these options, we also offer Tax Sheltered Annuities (TSA) and Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) options.
The beauty of Knights of Columbus retirement annuities lies squarely in their simplicity and security; they are fixed in nature and provide long-term accumulation of wealth. Whether you are looking to start a retirement savings program or moving substantial funds into safer waters, the Knights of Columbus offers product options that can help you achieve all of your retirement goals.
As your Field Agent, I’m here to help you determine which annuity product options are right for you and your family. I can answer any questions you might have and provide you with specific rules and complete details for each option.

Knight of the Month – June
This month, we honor our most recent Past Grand Knight and newest Trustee, Brother Philip Nassef, as Knight of the
Month for July.
Now, where do I start? Over the last four years, Phil has served as our Deputy Grand Knight and Grand Knight and
elevated the Monsignor Jams R. Jones Council 3303 to great heights for which our Council was recognized for numerous
charitable acts and noteworthy awards to include the Columbian award. I’m sure we can all attest to Phil’s sincere love for
the Knights of Columbus. His passion is demonstrated continuously by his hard work and dedication at almost every
Council event. Can anyone even remember any recent event where Brother Phil wasn’t a part of? He entertained us at
every Council and Officer meeting. He ensured 1st and 2nd degree exemplifications were conducted, represented the
interests of our council at the State mid-year and annual meetings, and always kept us informed of Council events. Most
of all, Brother Phil was there: there at Bingo Mondays, there at exemplifications, there at golf outings, there at funerals,
there at rosaries, there at after mass ticket sales, there at Pot Luck dinners, there at LAMB Collections, there at Yard Sales,
there at the Windows Dinner, there at Special Olympics, there at Youth Basketball and Soccer events, and always there
to lend a hand for a Brother Knight in need. You lead by example.
Thank you, Brother Phil. We look forward to your continued service to the Council. God Bless you!
Michael Lynch Grand Knight
Summer Yard Sale
Our June Yard Sale turned out to be a great success. We did have a few glitches, but they were overcome by everyone pulling together and getting the job done.
We were not able to get any of our great Marines until the last day. As a result, eight student volunteers from West Craven High School came in on Tuesday to help move and set up the furniture. We also hired three gentlemen from the community to help and the rest came from our outstanding pool of volunteers.
We had an abundance of just about everything, furniture, glassware, sporting goods, domestics, arts and crafts, home decor, pictures, antiques,
and hardware. Over 1,900 people came through the doors Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A really great turnout!
As always, a special thanks to the pickup crew who worked many hours to bring in all the donations. A big thank you to all the ladies and gentlemen who unpack, price, and stock our shelves. A big thank you to the counters who are always being shortchanged at lunch. Some things need to change. Let's not forget all the cooks and bakers who provided the delicious desserts for all to enjoy. Without all these dedicated volunteers there would be no yard sale.
Thank you to West Craven High School for allowing their students to come and help.
Last, but not least, the great group of Marines that came on Saturday to help us restore the yard sale area back to its normal condition.
Semper Fi - Oorah!
Always faithful. Ralph Aviles – Yard Sale Chairman
