The Klingon Empire

Qo’nos, the barely habitable Klingon Homeworld forms the capital of the Klingon Empire. Much like the Federation, the Klingon Empire is a conglomerate of races with one race, the Klingons, being the predominant race. However, this similarity ends here. Instead, to be an alien is the Klingon Empire is to be a subservient ‘under’ race. The Klingons quite brutally keep their underlings in line and only Klingons may hold command positions or fire weapons. Also, where the Federation is idealistic and economically aggressive, the Klingon Empire is militarily aggressive and economically unstable. On occasions, in its pursuit of grander and more powerful vessels, the Klingon Empire has almost made itself bankrupt to push the boundaries of military technology.

Otherwise, the existence of a Klingon warrior is that which is most spartan. There are few ‘luxuries’ aboard Klingon ships, and little room is left for expansive scientific facilities. Arguably, the only reason a Klingon would have a science officer is simply to divine how better to destroy the enemy.

The Klingon vessels are very much an avatar of the Klingon way of war. Often, the Klingons have weaker rear shields and most of their weapons point in forward arcs, for what is the point of shooting if you are running like a cowardly Targ?

Perhaps an air of impatience is also mirrored in the prime choice of Klingon heavy weapon; the ‘Disruptor’. The disruptor is weaker than the Federation photon torpedo, but fires much faster.

The disruptor is also seconded by missile racks, of which the Klingons tend to carry more (but usually with slightly inferior quality).

The Klingons have a relationship of sorts with the Lyran Star Empire and the Romulans. The enmity between the Romulans and Federation has been a cause of a number of treaties between the Romulans and the Klingons, and the Klingons even provided the Romulans with some ships as part of these treaties, allowing the Romulan fleet to expand and finally become something to be feared.

Klingon vessels have large numbers of weapons with wide fire arcs, to represent their sweeping ranges and the excellent turn rates of Klingon vessels.

Klingon weapons rules

DisruptorsThe disruptor is a fast firing weapon, which is more akin to a phaser than a photon torpedo. It is slightly more effective at longer range, comparatively, partly due to the successful unity of the dual UIM and DERFACS technologies.

-Disruptor bolts use the gunnery table, just like phasers. However, when rolling, shift one column to the left to represent the extra power of disruptors over phasers.

-This is cumulative with any other bonuses or penalties.

Missiles (Or Drones)The missile is the secondary heavy weapon fitted on Klingon ships. Klingons tend to make use of drones in larger volumes, to more of a blunt effect. They probably use more Drones than Federation vessels, but still not as many as the Kzinti.

-Missiles act in exactly the same way as torpedoes in Battlefleet Gothic (not to be confused with photon torpedoes), with some small exceptions:-They will always, without exception, take the shortest possible route to their target ship, and are able to turn to do so. -They must have a ‘target’ ship when fired, and may hit no other. It is also possible to absorb drone damage with shields.

-If the target vessel is destroyed before the missiles impact, they will harmlessly veer off into space, never to be seen again.

-Because missiles are guided by the ships that fire them, a ship must remain within 45cm of any missile salvo it has fired.

-If the salvo ends an ordnance phase over 45cm from the craft, without hitting an enemy vessel, it is lost.

It may be a good idea to mark your missile counters so that you can tell which ship each salvo belongs to. Just a thought.

Vessels of the Klingon EmpireKlingon Escorts

Klingon Escort (E4) 40pts

The Klingon E4 was originally designed as a frigate to escort the D6 cruiser. However, as Klingon ships improved and the newer generations came into existence, the F5 started to make the E4 obsolete, relegating it to police duties.

The K-Refit was a further refit that incorporated extra phaser-1 banks to increase offensive firepower.Amend the prow phaser as so:

Klingon Drone Escort (E4D) 45pts

The Klingon E4D was an attempt to reintroduce the E4 back into the Klingon fleet. The theory was that it could use its extra speed to contribute missiles from the outskirts of the battle.Perhaps in such a way that would satisfy Klingon ethics, such a tactic proved ineffective.

Klingon Cloaking Escort (E4Y) 55pts

As part of their dealings with the Romulans, the Klingons received some cloaking devices. In combat, it was tactically ineffectual, but the cloaking escort is popular amongst Klingon intelligence agencies.

Klingon Battle Escort (E6) 60pts

A serious attempt to get some yardage from the aged escort hull, the E6 was successful in that it made the escort more survivable, but unsuccessful in so far as it was still too vulnerable in larger fleet combat.

Klingon War Destroyer (K-Refit) (FWK) 80pts

The Klingon war destroyer was the ship that the Frigate had aspired to become. It was fast, manoeuvrable and quite powerful. This ship incorporates the K refit, since the main differences between the refitted version and the non-refitted version are negligible.

Klingon War Drone Cruiser (D5D) 100pts

The Klingon D5D was designed for direct combat, as opposed to long-range bombardment. No doubt, this was much more satisfactory to the Klingon commanders than the concept of hugging the exterior of the battlefield.

Klingon Drone Battlecruiser (D7D) 160pts

The Klingon D7D was an experiment to create a more effective combat vessel by adding further missile racks to the D7. Eventually, though acceptable to captains, the admirals rejected it on the basis of a lack of rear defences. It received no refits, probably due to its rejection.

Klingon Heavy Battlecruiser (C7) 280pts

The Klingon C7 was an excellent foil to the heavy battlecruisers of other races. With improved fire arcs and a sturdy hull, it was an excellent example of the Klingon war machineThe C7 required no further refits.

Klingon DreadnoughtsA note on the duality of the C8 and the C9: The C8 and C9 dreadnoughts were created at exactly the same time and also tested at the same time. However, the C8 was found to be much better for very slight differences in design. Indeed, the C8 and C9 were 98% similar. As such, the C9 has been omitted, since the differences are negligible.

Klingon Dreadnought (C8) 310pts

The Klingon C8 was the ship that would eventually become the main Klingon dreadnought. It was similar to the C9, but it was found that the C8 was much better at defending itself against missiles. The C8 was intended for patrolling the Lyran/Kzinti border, while the C9 patrolled the Federation border.

Klingon Battleship (B10K) 510pts

Not content to simply be the first empire to deploy a battleship, the Klingons also deployed multiple battleships. It nearly bankrupted the empire, and the first one took 15 years to build. Additional information:A Note on Klingon ‘Frigates’:In actuality, there exist a number of other, earlier, F5 frigates. However, the differences between these and the escorts are so small that they are not really worth including yet. The F5 is a true Frigate, while the F5W (and later classes) would strictly be a Destroyer, when compared to any other vessel. Equally, the War Destroyer Leader is a small upgrade over the War Destroyer; it too has been left out. To represent the War Destroyer, it would be perfectly acceptable to use escorts that have been made a little more distinguishable.
