Introduction In this work I’m going to talk about ‘’The
Kiwi Bird’’. You probably think it's a fruit but no, is a very important bird in the country of New Zealand, I will talk about its physical characteristics, its importance and because it is in danger of extinction.
Objectives 1. Research and know what is the Kiwi
Bord. 2. Identify the causes of their massive
extinctions. 3. The importance of this Bird to New
Zealand.
The Kiwi Bird Kiwi are flightless
birds, they size is similar to a little chicken. kiwi are by far the smallest living ratites and lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world.
The Kiwi Bird New zealand is the home of the Kiwi, is the
national symbol and you´ll see it everywhere.
In fact, you´´ll see it everywhere except where it should be: In the wild.
In Danger of Extinction
Experts estimate that there were once more than 20 million kiwis across New Zealand.
The invasion of Human settlers is probably the biggest reason why these birds are endangered.
Human Settlers During the nineteenth century, devastated
New Zealand’s native habitat, cutting down trees and clearind land for farming.
Europeans also introduces lethal predators such as cats, dogs and rats.
In Danger of Extinction
For this reason the lethal predators will kill all young kiwis and have decimated the kiwi population, yet this creatures will began to faces extinction.
Rescue Operation In 1994 a campaign was started to save
the Kiwi by restoring and protecting native habitats and creating special predator free-areas.
This 942-hectare reserve is New Zealand’s national wildlife breeding centre for species in danger of extinction.
Rescue Operation This project includes collecting kiwi eggs
from the wild to incubate them artificially in captivity.
After meeting the six months, Kiwi’s are usually strong enough to defend themselves against predators.
As a National Symbol The kiwi as a symbol first appeared in the
late 19th century in New Zealand regimental badges. It was later featured in the badges of the South Canterbury Battalion in 1886 and the Hastings Rifle Volunteers in 1887. Soon after, the kiwi appeared in many military badges.
Conclusions We learned the characteristics of the Kiwi
Bird, We could see the reasons for which today the kiwi is in danger of extincion specie, the great rescue program made in the year 1994 and also because it is taken as a national symbol to New Zealand’s country.
