A LIFE THAT COUNTS

Matthew chapters 5‐7 are known as Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” which is a compilation of messages that Jesus taught the people and a powerful place for believers to discover what the life of faith is all about. Jesus says some challenging things in these verses and I was thinking it might be a great place to study this summer. Starting June 5th we will begin a series through these verses, tracing the lessons Jesus wants to teach us about a life that counts through radical beliefs and insights through faith. We will be teaching this series every Sunday this summer in worship, during the Sunday School hour at 9:30 a.m. and then also at a Bible Study on Wednesdays starting at 10:00 a.m.
We will publish a small group teaching guide that you can use for your own home group or just for personal study. Pastor Kenneth led a series on the “Difficult Sayings of Jesus” a few months back, this is kind of a follow up on to that as many of those sayings come straight out of this passage.

I know summer time can be a crazy time of travel and different schedules, but I hope you can join us when you are in the area each week for this powerful series. Great stuff for the people of God about everyday living in light of what matters.

Men’s Bible Study
Every Saturday of the month (except the 1st), at 8:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room, we continue our study in the book of 1 Corinthians. Please join us!
June Men’s Prayer Breakfast
On the first Saturday of the month, Saturday, June 4th, the men of the congregation meet for breakfast and a study of the Gospel of John. This month, we will have a special guest speaker, Mr. John Rutherford. John will share his faith journey and experience working as an Execu‐tive for the YMCA. (See Page 6)
Men’s Basic Training Bible Study
The Men’s Basic Training Bible Study meets on Thursdays, 5:30‐6:30 p.m. in the Youth Room (#9/#10). We will be on Summer break starting June 9th until August 31st. We will resume on Thursday, September 1st, and begin a new study on the Holy Spirit. This study will look at topics such as: This is not intended to be an exhaustive study, but one we hope will spark your interest to explore more. JOHN RUTHERFORD
John was fortunate to have a Christian mother that made sure his father, his twin sister and he learned about Christ. In high school he received a scholarship to go to a Young Life Christian Camp that was located in a beautiful setting in the Canadian wilderness. John received Christ in this mountain high experience and then promptly put HIM on the shelf and moved on with his life. It took several hard and loving bumps in his road of life for God to convince him that HE was a better driver than John. God has always blessed him, but after he looked to HIM for guidance, John’s life took on more meaning and was filled with accomplishments. John graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1971. From there he moved to Colorado with his wife of one year, Carolyn Lampe. He took a position of Counselor at a residential treatment facility for developmentally disabled young adults. This facility took young adults out of state institutions and gave them social develop‐ment and vocational training. Then the program found and placed them in jobs and their own homes in the community. In a little over a year, John was in charge of operations, overseeing 32 professional staff. In 1975 after God’s final large bump in the road, a major turning point of his life, John moved on to be a Program Director at the Oakland YMCA. In 1978, he became the Executive Director of a YMCA serving the Livermore, Pleasanton area. In 1982, John became the CEO of the Southeast Ventura County YMCA. He spent the next 26 years working with a wonderful group of Board Members to take that YMCA from serving annually 1,500 participants to 22,000 partici‐pants, with a budget of $8 million. To do this, it was necessary to build three new YMCA facilities and recruit thousands of volunteers. Along the way Carolyn and John raised three wonderful children who gave them five grandchildren. It has been a blessing, during their last ten years of retirement, to have all their children live close by.

STITCH n’ GIVE
Thank you to all those who have made quilt tops for us! We are back up to a good supply. Thank you, as well, to the folks who have giv‐en fabrics and sheets. We appreciate your donations! Stitch n’ Give will meet on Wednesday, June 8th at 9:00 a.m. to baste quilts in the Fireside Room — this is a change to our regular sched‐ule. We will meet again on Wednesday, June 22nd at 9:00 a.m. in the Fire‐side Room to tie quilts. We have several new members, and welcome more — please come and join us! Our ministry is focused on making twin size quilts for Lutheran World Relief (LWR), and baby‐size quilts or blankets for our CTK baptisms and for Camp Pendleton’s Hospital Maternity Ward. Please bring your own sewing kit with large‐eyed sharp tapestry needles, scis‐sors and a thimble, or use our supplies. We will show you how to make everything that we do.

It’s time to start thinking about this year’s Country Faire on Saturday, October 22nd! We are hoping that everyone is already working on crafts items, and new recipes for the Bake Sale and Cookie Walk. I will be in the Preschool office through the month of June, so be sure to enroll your child TODAY to reserve your spot! The O.K. Club is a loosely structured, non‐membership required, group of people who meet several times each year to share fellowship, fun and good food, while becoming better acquainted with AND forming friendships with other members of our Christ The King church family.
O.K. Club June Event
“Stars in My Crown” Movie Matinee Tuesday, June 21st 12:00‐3:00 p.m.
Our June Event will be a Movie Matinee showing of “Stars in My Crown,” starring Joel McCrea and Ellen Drew. According to reviews, “It is a nice slice‐of‐life movie about the life of a country preacher in the years immediately fol‐lowing the Civil War.” “This movie is over 50 years old, yet it’s humor, it’s message of brotherhood, it’s depiction of small‐town Western America at a time when religion was the true center of everyone’s lives, makes this film one that has rarely been equaled.” The cost per person is only $5, and will include both the movie and pizza lunch. Tentative plans call for pizza, salad, peanuts, popcorn, and ice cream! Hosts of this event are George and Paula Farley. Sign ups will be taken Sun‐days, June 5th, June 12th and June 19th, in the front of Church. Contact: George and Paula Farley .

Thank you for all you brought to our Second Annual Interfaith Food Drive.
Without Christ The King’s help, the Food Drive would not have been the success it was.
Allowing us to place a donation barrel in the narthex of the Church was key to the success
of the Drive. It played a big part leading to the success of the Drive. As I told you, Pastor Mark, the 3,200
pounds of food the congregation donated was second to none. Please accept my sincere gratitude for all your help.

Thank You, Thank You, CTK… Sharing the Table was a Huge Success!!
How do we thank such a loving and giving church? You have answered our prayers. We finished this year of Sharing the Table with a mini‐carnival on Saturday, May 14th. With your help we were able to feed the families a complete lunch, and distribute much needed coats and blankets to the families. I can’t express how thankful they
have been for all your help and generosity. We received hugs and sad farewells on May 14th. They hated to see STT stop for the summer. Saturdays were not only a source for a much needed meal, but it also became a family outing and a safe place for their children to play. We got to know our neighbors and now we see them on the streets and in the stores and we stop to say, “hello.” They are a blessing to all of us. Over and over they have asked us to thank you for all you have done for them. They are very grateful.
Our last meal in 2016 ended with serving 140 people from 25 fami‐lies. Job well done CTK! I think Pastor Kenneth would agree we were on fire!!!
