Editoriale EditorialTra la fine del mese di novembre e i primi giorni di dicembre molti bergamaschi inco-minciano a guardare ogni giorno verso le montagne. Sono gli appassionati dello sci, per i quali l’imbiancarsi delle vette più alte segna l’inizio della stagione tanto attesa, con le veloci discese lungo le piste piene di neve. Negli ultimi anni, grazie agli impian-ti di neve programmata in tutte le stazioni sciistiche delle valli bergamasche, l’aper-tura degli impianti di risalita e delle piste è ormai assicurata per il “ponte” della festa dell’Immacolata, che quest’anno va da sabato 5 a martedì 8 dicembre. Tre-quattro giorni di divertimento pieno sulla neve, preludio a una stagione che gli sciatori si augurano come l’inverno scorso, con precipitazioni così abbondanti che hanno consen-tito di calzare gli sci fino a primavera inoltrata. Mentre nelle valli inizia il grande “circo bianco”, a Bergamo e in tutti i centri della Bergamasca è il momento delle tra-dizioni di Natale: presepi e alberi pieni di luci, mercatini e concerti. E su tutto il dolce suono del “baghèt”, antico strumento musicale tipico delle Alpi Orobiche.

Between the end of November and the beginning of December many people from Bergamo look each day towards the mountains. These people are ski enthusiasts for whom a snow covering on the highest peaks marks the beginning of the much awaited ski season. Over the past few years, thanks to artificial snow machines in all ski resorts in the Bergamask valleys, the opening of the ski lifts and pistes is now guaranteed for the “long weekend” of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which this year takes place from Saturday 5th to Tuesday 8th December. Three or four days of total fun on the snow, and the prelude to a season that skiers hope will be like last year, when the snow was so thick it lasted well into late spring. While in the valleys “skiing’s travelling circus” commences, in Bergamo and all towns in Bergamo province it is a time of Christmas traditions: Nativity scenes and trees full of lights, markets and concerts. And all to the gentle sound of the “baghèt”, the ancient musical instrument which is typically played in the Orobie Alps.

Bisogna aspettare i giorni dell’Avvento per poter ascolta-re a Bergamo e nelle valli bergamasche il suono del “ba-ghèt”, un antico strumento noto anche come la cornamu-sa delle Orobie. Fino agli inizi del secolo scorso veniva suonato un po’ ovunque nelle valli bergamasche, addirit-tura in Val Gandino ancora alcuni decenni or sono i man-driani al rientro dagli alpeggi sostavano al santuario della Trinità e c’era sempre qualcuno che suonava la “piva”, altro nome della cornamusa, che sembra avesse il potere di tenere tranquillo il bestiame.

Also known as the Orobie “cornamusa”, this ancient musical instrument, which is similar to the bagpipes, was played almost every-where in the Bergamask valleys up until the beginning of the last century. Data ormai per scomparsa, la tradizione del “baghèt” è in corso di recupero grazie ad alcuni appassionati e ricercatori che hanno studiato i pochi strumenti superstiti e hanno raccolto testimonianze tra i più an-ziani. È nata addirittura una associazione culturale - “Il Baghèt” - con sede nel paese di Casnigo e una banda di nome “Berghèm Baghèt“, che organizzano corsi di cornamuse. Il “baghèt” è così ricomparso ad allietare feste e sagre, ma i più tradizionalisti sostengono che è uno strumento invernale, da suonare in pubblico soprattutto a Natale e nelle giornate della vigilia. Proprio in queste occasioni capita di imbatter-si in suonatori avvolti nel lungo mantello dei montanari che percorrono le strade e sostano nelle piazze. Un tempo protagonisti di questa attività musicale erano i contadini, che nella stagione invernale avevano più tempo e che, suonando nelle vicinanze dei mercati o delle chiese, potevano racimolare qualche soldo.L’annuncio del Natale è legato a Bergamo ad appuntamenti e manifestazioni varie, tra cui la più significa-

A tradition that almost disappeared entirely, the “baghèt” is today making a comeback thanks to several enthusiasts and researchers who have studied the few surviving instruments and gathered accounts from older generations. “Il Baghèt”, a cultural association with its headquarters in the town of Casnigo, and a group called “Berghèm Baghèt”, which organises courses, have even been created. The “baghèt” has therefore been revived to bring joy to festivals and feasts. Traditionalists however maintain that it is a winter instrument to be played in public particularly during the days leading up to Christmas. It is during this period that “baghèt” players wearing the long cloaks of mountain dwellers can be seen in the streets and squares of Bergamo. Farmers, who had more time in the winter, used to take part in this activity, playing near markets or churches and collecting small amounts of money.

Cuore della Fiera è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi. Per un paio di giorni, in coincidenza con la festa di Santa Lucia che cade il 13 dicembre, bergamaschi e turisti sono immersi nell’atmosfera festosa di questa sagra, che ha origini molto lontane. Una Fiera di Santa Lucia si celebrava nei secoli passati in prossimità della chiesa e del convento di Santa Lucia Vecchia, che si trovava dove ora sorge il palazzo Frizzoni, sede del Comune di Bergamo. Nonostante la soppres-sione e la demolizione del complesso religioso, la fiera continuò e anche oggi è uno dei momenti più caratteristici e tradizionali dell’Avvento a Bergamo. È piacevole passeggiare lungo il Sentierone percorso da una folla festosa, tra decine di bancarelle e i profumi delle frittelle e delle caldarroste. E se poi ci sono dei bambini l’atmosfera si fa ancora più gioio-sa. Secondo la tradizione giunta a Bergamo da Ve-nezia quando la città era sotto il dominio della Se-

The arrival of Christmas in Bergamo is linked to various events and celebrations, the most impor-tant of which is the Saint Lucia Fair, which occu-pies the centre of Bergamo with stalls of every kind. The heart of the Fair is the Sentierone, the promenade of the Bergamask people. For two days – to coincide with the Feast Day of Saint Lucia which falls on 13 December – local people and tourists become immersed in the festive atmos-phere of this event, which has very ancient origins. Centuries ago the Saint Lucia Fair used to take place near the church and convent of “Santa Lucia Vecchia”, which stood on the site of Palazzo Friz-zoni, Bergamo’s Town Hall. In spite of the suppres-sion and demolition of the religious complex, the fair continued and today it is one of the most characteristic and traditional moments of the Ad-vent in Bergamo. Strolling along the Sentierone in the midst of the festive crowd, among dozens of stands with the aromas of fritters and roast chest-nuts, is a wonderful experience. And if it is filled

with children the atmosphere is even more joyful. Accord-ing to this tradition, which arrived in Bergamo from Venice when the city was under the domination of the “Serenis-sima”, Saint Lucia moves from house to house accompa-nied by a donkey, giving presents to good children. And since the saint is known for her goodness, when her long night journey is over, every child has received a gift. If you still have time, while the churches are preparing their Nativity scenes and the Christmas trees are being richly decorated, pay a visit to the Piazza Matteotti, near the

Santa Lucia: una notte per sognare! A Bergamo è una delle tradizioni più belle, tanto amata soprattutto dai bambini che tra il 12 e il 13 dicembre attendono l’arrivo della Santa che distri-buisce nelle case dolci e doni. Oltre che giocattoli è un classico ricevere leccornie di ogni tipo: cioccolati, caramelle, zuccherini, caldarroste, frutta secca... ma anche, come dice la tradizione, carbone (dolce!) per chi è stato più disobbediente! E per i più grandi? Ottima occasione per assaggiare nei ristoranti tipici la polenta taragna che scalda il corpo e il cuore!

The Feast of Saint Lucia: a night when dreams come true! This is one of Bergamo’s best loved traditions, particularly by children, who on the night between the 12th and 13th December wait for the arrival of the Saint who brings sweets and gifts to their homes. As well as toys, children receive all kinds of treats: chocolate, sweets, candy, roast chestnuts, dried fruit… but also, as tradition would have it, coal (sweet!) for those who have been disobedient! And for adults? It’s an excellent opportunity to taste polenta taragna (polenta made with maize and buckwheat flower with the addition of cheese) in the local restaurants, which warms the body and the heart!

Non perdere gli appuntamenti più importanti dello shopping natalizio: i mercatini più tradizionali si svolgono lungo il Sentierone, in centro città, i giorni 10,11,12,13 Dicembre in occasione della festa di Santa Lucia. Sempre in centro città, dal 30 novembre al 6 gennaio si svolge il rinomato Mercatino di Natale in Piazza Matteotti di fronte al Teatro Donizetti: oltre a numerose casette con tante interessanti idee per i tuoi regali natalizi, troverai molte occasioni di divertimento! Un mercatino natalizio all’insegna dell’artigianato bergamasco lo trovi invece in Piazza Dante dal 28 novembre al 28 dicembre dove ti aspettano altre casette in legno con i tipici prodotti orobici. Respira l’atmosfera natalizia che pervade anche tutta la Provincia! A Castione della Presolana e Clusone in Valle Seriana e Cornalba in Valle Serina, si trovano i mercatini più suggestivi e rinomati. La via degli Orti un tempo era un rustico viottolo che si affacciava sui pendii ben coltivati (lo dice il nome stesso) dei colli di Bergamo, appe-na oltre la cerchia delle mura. Oggi è compresa in un piacevole percorso che, uscendo da Bergamo Alta per la porta Sant’Alessandro, consente di vedere l’antico Borgo Canale da una prospettiva inconsueta. È proprio questo itinerario che suggeriamo a chi desidera visitare la casa natale dell’autore di immortali melodie come la “Lucia di Lammermoor”, maga-ri dopo aver visto la tomba nella basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore e, in via Gaetano Donizetti, la dimora dove il grande compositore morì. L’ac-cesso alla casa natale è in via Borgo Canale, al civico 14, come ricorda una grande targa in marmo. Ma è per la via degli Orti che ci si può ren-dere conto di quanto fosse povera la famiglia di Gaetano Donizetti. I suoi genitori vivevano in due stanze, cui si accedeva dal borgo per una ripida

Via degli Orti (Vegetable Garden Road) was once a rustic alleyway that overlooked the well-cultivated slopes (as its name suggests) of the hills of Bergamo, just outside the city walls. Today it is part of a pleasant itinerary which, leaving Upper Bergamo via the Sant’Alessandro Gate, offers a glimpse of old Borgo Canale from an unusual perspec-tive. It is an itinerary we suggest taking if you wish to visit the house where the composer of timeless operas such as “Lucia di Lammer-moor” was born, perhaps after visiting his tomb in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the house where he died in Via Gaetano Donizetti. The entrance to the house where Donizetti was born is in Via Borgo Canale, at number 14, as featured on the large marble plaque outside. But it is along Via degli Orti that we can see just how poor his family was. His parents lived in two rooms which were ac-

scala. Uno dei vani, senza finestre, è quello dove il musicista venne alla luce, l’altro prende un po’ d’aria da una piccola apertura su via degli Orti. Al culmine della fama, Gaetano Donizetti vi accennava nelle sue lettere: vani angusti, umi-di, sotto il livello della strada, “ov’ombra di luce non mai penetrò”. Decenni or sono il Comune di Bergamo acquistò l’edificio, ma si limitò alla sistemazione degli ambienti dove l’artista nacque e trascorse l’infanzia. Nei mesi scorsi è stato portato a termine un importante intervento di recupero dell’intero stabile: i vani storici sono stati sottoposti a restauro conservativo, mentre ai piani su-periori sono stati ricavati uno spazio espositivo articolato in dieci sale, una sala per concerti e conferenze e una foresteria. È stato così compiuto un passo im-portante per valorizzare e aprire ad appassionati e turisti questo angolo di Borgo Canale, nell’ambito di un programma il cui obiettivo è far sì che Gaetano Donizetti sia sempre più il testimonial di Bergamo in tutto il mondo.

At the height of his fame, Gaetano Donizetti mentioned this place in his letters: small damp rooms, below the level of the street “where the light never penetrated”. The municipality of Bergamo purchased the house ten years ago, but only renovated the areas where the artist was born and spent his childhood. Over the past few months work on the entire building has been completed: the historic rooms have been restored, and an exhibition area of ten rooms, a concert hall and guest rooms have been cre-ated in the upper floors. This work marks an important step towards valoris-ing and revealing this corner of Borgo Canale to tourists, which is part of a wider programme to make Gaetano Donizetti an increasingly important rep-resentative of Bergamo worldwide.

Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, Porta Nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, af-fiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentierone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la via Tasso e, a ovest, la via XX Settembre, al centro di un’anima-tissima area commerciale.In via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della Provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affac-ciano la Chiesa di San Bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’alta-re eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il Teatro Donizetti affiancato dal monumento al grande musicista. Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moder-na che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta. I borghi sono animatissimi come un tempo, con negozi e botteghe artigiane d’ogni genere, oltre a un gran numero di ristoranti, bar e trattorie.Lungo una delle strade che salgono verso Città Alta, via San Tommaso, è nato agli inizi dell’Ottocento il palazzo dell’Acca-demia Carrara con la Pinacoteca che raccoglie circa duemila opere delle principali scuole pittoriche italiane ed europee. Di fronte la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea è utiliz-zata per importanti mostre oltre che ad essere sede di esposi-zioni permanenti. Non molto lontano, nel borgo di Pignolo, il Museo Bernareggi d’Arte Sacra.

Porta Nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demol-ished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Ber-gamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular prom-enade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashion-able shopping street.Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the Provincial Authority Building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of San Bar-tolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the Donizetti Theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were established along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along via San Tommaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century building housing the Ac-cademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand master-pieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery host-ing important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibi-tions. The Bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

Piazza Vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Ber-gamo, è il naturale punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazio-ne di arrivo si esce subito sulla Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di via Gombito-via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraversava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la via Gombito che con-duce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla torre civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del Palazzo della Ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il Battistero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleo-ni, la Basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro ese-guite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fioren-tini, alla tomba di Gaetano Donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi do-nizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla Rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monastero di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

Piazza Vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the fu-nicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along via Gombito-via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of Gaetano Donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s history unites the various museums: the Rocca (fortress) museum, the City mu-seum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeo-logical and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.

Oltre un secolo fa, quando lo sci era uno sport ancora scono-sciuto, tra le montagne bergamasche c’erano personaggi che calzando massicci e ingombranti strumenti in legno scendevano per i pendii innevati tra rovinose cadute. Erano autentici pio-nieri. Fondarono il secondo Ski (così si chiamavano allora gli sci) Club in Italia (il primo nacque a Torino) e cercarono di impratichirsi con le strette e lunghe tavole di legno arrivate dal Nord. Le prime esercitazioni sciistiche avvennero nell’inverno 1900-1901 a Castione della Presolana e furono anche compiute alcune escursioni in quota. Allora non c’erano differenze tra
