“United we stand, divided we fall.”
Message from the President
KYSSAR Compatriots: First, I would like to thank each of you for your faith and
loyalty to the Kentucky Society. I have big shoes to fill based on the efforts of past
KYSSAR Presidents and will endeavor to do my best to maintain the high standard
established by my predecessors. Thank you for this opportunity.
I look forward to the opportunities ahead for the Kentucky Society. We are just
under 1,000 members. With minor efforts, we should be able to break that level this year. There
is a new Chapter in the works in Eastern Kentucky. Gary Howard has performed a yeoman’s task
and deserves much credit for his efforts. Don’t forget, your sons and grandsons under the age of
18 can join the SAR as a Junior Member. Both of my boys joined as Junior Members and con-
tinue to maintain their membership. I encourage you to consider this for the young men in your
lives.
In a few weeks, KYSSAR will celebrate our 125th Anniversary. Our Society was formed by then
Governor Simon Bolivar Buckner on April 8, 1889 during a meeting in the Senate chamber of
the Capital Building. This April 8th, we will meet in that same room, now in the “old” Capital
Building in Frankfort to celebrate our founding and pay tribute to our founders. Make plans to
attend if you can.
There are other activities this year with a theme of 125. April 30th will mark 125 years that the
National Society has been in existence. The 125th National Congress in Louisville is just around
the corner. The first Congress of the National Society met in Louisville in 1890, at the Galt
House at First and Main Street. The 2015 Congress will be at the current Galt House. Chuck
Scott has done some great preparation work up to this point, but he needs our assistance to com-
plete the task. We need your help to make Kentucky a showcase.
The Purple Heart Monument will be dedicated in Walton on April 12th. Jackie Miller has
worked diligently to see this project through to completion. I hope to see many of you in Walton
as we pay tribute to those in the military who have been wounded.
I look forward to traveling the State to meet as many of you as I can. You are the backbone of
the Kentucky Society and I thank you for your efforts. Your willingness to step up and be in-
volved is what makes Kentucky shine.
Thank you for your support.
Fraternally, Doug Collins
KYSSAR President

was Spalding University President Tori Murden McClure. She told the attendees about some of her adventures which included
skiing at the South Pole, mountain climbing and being the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. A special guest

Colonel Stephen Trigg Chapter
On Monday, February 17, at 11:00 A.M., Compatriots from the Col. Stephen Trigg Chapter of the Sons of the
American Revolution in Cadiz, Kentucky, braved the wind, rain, and cold temperatures to dedicate a new monument
on the campus of the Trigg County Elementary/Intermediate Schools. The chapter planted a cherry tree and placed a
granite marker in honor of George Washington's Birthday.
Joining the chapter Compatriots were several ladies from the James Thomas Chapter of the Daughters of the
American Revolution, as well as several students and staff from the Trigg County Intermediate School. Chapter
president Geoff Baggett gave a brief historical presentation to help those in attendance understand the significance
of the cherry tree and its historical association with George Washington. Compatriot Steve Mallory presented a
patriotic wreath at the memorial. After the dedication, participants posed for photographs.

George Washington Portrait Presented by Colonel Stephen Trigg Chapter
( L-R) Steve Mallory, Billy Redd, Geoff Baggett, Principal Brian Futrell, Ken
Oakley, and James Sumner
Today five Compatriots visited the Trigg County Intermediate School to present a framed canvas portrait of George Washington to
school Principal Brian Futrell. This portrait, made available by the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, was purchased by the
chapter specifically for placement in this school. Mr. Futrell plans to hang it in the main hallway of the school near the offices.
In addition to the portrait, compatriots also presented Mr. Futrell with a teaching resource kit, a flag flown over Mount Vernon, and
a Certificate of Appreciation for his willingness to work with the chapter in resourcing education about the Revolutionary War.
On Friday, February 21, chapter president Geoff Baggett went “on the road” for a speaker’s bureau engagement in
Lakeland, Tennessee (near Memphis). His sister-in-law, Christy Harrison, is a fourth-grade teacher at Lakeland Elementary
School. She introduced the Americanism Poster Contest to the other teachers at her school. In February they offered the poster
project as an “extra credit” grade while studying their social studies unit on the Revolutionary War. 37 of their 140 students
participated.
On Friday Compatriot Baggett spoke to a combined assembly of six classes in the school cafeteria about the militia in the Revolution
and the role of Francis Marion in the Southern Theater. He also awarded certificates to the first, second, and third place win-
ners. The grand prize winner also received a book, The Swamp Fos of the Revolution by Stewart H. Holbrook, and a $20 cash
prize. He also presented “Certificates of Appreciation” to the school principal and all six of the teachers who participated in the
poster project. The highlight of the afternoon was teaching the kids the, “Huzzah!” cheer and hearing the entire cafeteria full of kids
giving the cheer as they waved their arms.

Crossing of the Dan
The "Retreat to the Dan" began in January 1781, following an American victory at Cowpens in South Carolina and became a "Race
to the Dan" across North Carolina and into Virginia. The race was won by General Nathanael Greene with his "Crossing of the
Dan" on February 14th at Irvin's and Boyd's ferries on the Dan River. This tactical retreat saved the American Southern Army and
was one of the turning points in the war. The historical significance of the event places the Dan River crossing on a unique list of
landmark sites of the American Revolution, and the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution has elevated the event to
national prominence.
Kentucky Compatriots at the “Crossing of the Dan”:were Charlie Scott,
Dr. Larry Leslie, Tom Higgins, Dennis Scott, Marshall Wilkins, Rev.
Forrest Chilton, Chuck Scott, John Clay Barnett and Scott Giltner.

of Children During the American Revolution. The war dramatically changed the lives of children during the Revolution. Some
actually followed their fathers into battle; others stayed home and assumed new responsibilities that were necessary for their fami-
lies’ survival. The students were to pretend to be are a boy or a girl during the colonial fight for freedom. Using historical facts,
they were to discuss how the war is affecting their lives. Six of the top 10 winners read their essays to the group. Certificates and
