The Kansas City Metro Senior Softball League’s

In an effort to fairly position teams within each conference, and/or division with minimal need for any equalizers, the league has adopted an individual Player Skill Rating system. It is making its debut in 2018 but will not become fully operational until 2019. During this past off-season, a 15-per-son committee met to base-rate all of our 850+ members on a 10-to-1 (Platinum-to-Bronze) scale. Once again, a team from the Kansas City area has earned a SSUSA/LVSSA World Masters championship. This time, the title went to Above the Law, which boasted nine players from the Monday night women’s conference at Hartman Park. Brenda Foreman (bottom row of pic-ture, second from left) managed the 40+ AAA team, which lost only one game -- and by only one run. Because the loss happened in the second round of bracket

Congrats to 2017 world champs!

play in an 18-team division, Above the Law had to win five loser’s bracket games to get back to the championship game. It won those loser’s bracket games 14-12 and 19-12 on Saturday and 15-11, 9-5 and 15-5 on Sunday to earn the right to face Still Swinging of Las Vegas for the ti-tle. Still Swinging had defeated Above the Law 20-19 earlier in bracket play. Above the Law double-dipped the hometown team 15-10 and 15-11 to earn its second LVSSA/SSUSA world title in four years.

(It won the AA division in 2014 and had finished second in AAA in 2016.) KCMSSL members on the team wereBrenda Foreman, Joyce Hickmon, Ni-cole Spencer, Gailya Young, Emma Har-ris, Melissa “Mo” Carouthers, Ursula Copeland, Stacey Bryant and Patti Van-Vlek. The champs are pictured above with the second-place team’s players (the ones with medals around their necks instead of the free rings Above the Law won.)

After multiple years of working to create a singular place for the KCMS-SL to play, we have reached the end of possibilities. The floods of 2017 provided proof that the Blue River location would not be a viable land-ing spot for us, as the area where we would have located our project, in-cluding the VA service center, ended up under 10 feet of water. We have been offered other venues but none

satisfies our needs, and in the judge-ment of the committee seem more in tune with supplying revenue to other entities with almost no advantage to or for our association. The Field of Dreams project is of-ficially on hold. I am not at this time ready to declare it dead even though my gut instincts are telling me that it is.

Field of Dreams project halts Membership stays steady The league ended 2017 with 855 mem-bers, two less than 2016. It marked the third year in a row that the KCMSSL has surpassed 850 members. The number of men grew by one, to 716. The number of women dropped by three, to 139. Since 2012, membership is up nearly 200 players overall, or almost 30 percent. Please remember to pay your dues. We encourage online payment at Leaguesheets.com, which houses our membership database.

Heeding the changing demographics of our league, the Board of Directors unani-mously approved changes to the Tuesday night Black Bob conference. There will be three separate age divi-sions -- 55+, 60+, and 65+ -- instead of the previous two. The former 60+silver conference will become a 65+ gold/silver conference. There will be a four- or five-team 55+ gold conference with Board Member Rocky Osborn ([email protected]; 913-237 1526) as coordinator. In memory of our departed members.... The league lost nearly a doz-en current or former members to death in 2017:

Delbert Pilgrim, 76, died Jan. 14. He played for Knapheide, Midwest Driving School and Midwest SilverJox. He won many awards and medals. He served in the U.S. Army for six years.

Jeremiah Finnegan, 79, died March 27. He played for Central States, the original KC Classics and Knaphiede. An avid sports fan, Jeremiah played softball as a left-fielder until he was 67.

Gary Marx Sr., 78, died April 29. He played for Central States Fitness, Las Chiles and Adams Auto Group. Gary, who served in the Marines, was an avid gardener and very active in bowling and softball. He played both until very recently and was voted the MVP for the Senior Softball World Series for his pitching skills, his obituary said.

Forrest Burgett, 73, died May 3. He played for Super Seniors from 1995 through

97, and was an original mem-ber of Ancient Mariners in 1998, playing until his work as a pastor tied him up too much.

Paul Scott, 68, died July 6. He played for KC Avengers from 2000 to 2005, until a leg in-jury forced him to quit. He was known for always smiling Longtime friend and Aveng-ers teammate Rodney Brock recalled: “I remember many great times on the softball field with Paul, but the one that stands out for me is the throw Paul made from right field to home against New Mexico.

The man was out by 10 feet and that throw was a major factor in the Avengers winning the game and tournament.”

Don Brown, 58, died July 10. He played for KC Storm and Lenexa Old Timers. Don will forever be remembered by “Da Mills Men,” colleagues of Honeywell, and his softball family, “which reaches through many states,” his obituary said.

Mike Sharon, 71, died July 12. He managed the KC An-gels for years and brought many players into the league. Following high school, he served in the Air Force.

Charlie Hiller, 69, died Aug. 10. A former KCMS-SL board member, he played for Dan-ny’s Bar & Grill, Campbell Communications, Tequila Harry’s, Tequila An-gels, Boys of Summer, Long-branch and KC Sports Club. Note from Troy Williams: “Thank you for managing our softball team, Lefty! I know you’ll check in on us from time to time. We can really use

an angel in the outfield.... You will be missed.”

Eddie Lane, 86, died Oct. 14. He played for Cass Coun-ty. Eddie’s pursuit of baseball provided him the opportu-nity to be a Life Member and Coach for 3&2 Baseball and with 50+ Softball, his obitu-ary said.

Clyde Jones, 80, died Oct. 23 while playing catcher for the Antiques dur-ing the team’s fi-nal game of the season. He played for Antiques, Ageless Wonders, Heartland Classics and McBrides. Clyde retired from baseball at age 60 (af-ter his team won the Men’s Sr. Olympics) and moved on to softball as a pitcher, first baseman and team manager. “Clyde didn’t think it was a good day unless he came home dirty from sliding into base,” his obituary said.

Dale Young died Nov. 29. He played for POP’s in 2004-05 and Old Red Dogs.

Beware: Pitching, running rules tweaked The league’s Board of Directors ap-proved some rule changes for this year, added language on what constitutes a regulation game, and added a section to the rule book that explains equalizers. All the changes, except one involving pitching over the screen, had been rec-ommended by the league’s rules commit-tee. One change, involving the two under-age players allowed on each 50+ competitive team, will not take effect until 2019. The changes:

Pitching screen: A pitcher no longer can stand completely behind the pitching screen and throw the ball over the top of the screen to the batter. The batter must be able to see the ball from release all the way through flight to the plate, as was the case in this picture (right of this column) taken during the 2017 spring league tourna-ment. Pitches released behind the screen will be considered “illegal” and will be a ball un-less the batter swings at the pitch.

Courtesy runners: SSUSA tweaked its rule, and our league is following suit. This year, a courtesy runner may enter the game only before the first pitch to any batter. So if a player reaching base safely doesn’t get a courtesy runner be-fore the first pitch to the next batter, the runner will have to wait until after that at-bat finishes before getting a courtesy runner. Courtesy runners still can be in-serted at any base but only between bat-ters, not during an at-bat.

Double-up rule: This rule, which we used on a trial basis

last year in an effort to get more innings played, has been eliminated.

Draft rule on borrowing players: Previously, the draft league forbid teams to borrow players from teams on a bye. The new rule allows managers to borrow silver- or bronze-rated players from a bye team but not a gold-rated player.

Underage players for 50+ teams: Each conference has a minimum age that a player must be turning during the calendar year to compete. The exception is that 50+ competitive (non-draft) con-ferences are allowed two younger players (turning age 47, 48 or 49). Starting in 2019, such players need to be turning 48 or 49. Other teams still cannot borrow these players, unless the opposing manager waives that rule.

Regulation games: Our rule book has not spelled out whether games called because of rain or other situations should be resumed from the point of interruption, or started over. The new rule: A game shortened by weather or other factors shall be con-sidered a regulation game if five innings are concluded, or if four and one-half innings with the home team ahead are

concluded. Games that do not reach this length will be replayed in their entirety. If the interrupted game is tied, and five innings have been played, it will be considered a tie game and will not be re-played.

Equalizers: To help players and manag-ers understand equalizers, we added an explanation: “Conferences sometimes have sizable disparities be-tween teams within a divi-sion. To make games more competitive, the competition committee, the conference co-ordinator working with team managers, or the Board of Di-rectors can institute “equaliz-ers” for teams that otherwise would lose most games by at least five runs. Acceptable equalizers: an 11th defensive

player (only available for teams that nor-mally play with 10 defenders); three runs given at the start of the game; five runs given at the start of the game; or a com-bination of awarded runs (three or five) and an extra defender.”

The rules committee also considered, but did not recommend, changes to rules involving excess home run rules and the minimum number of players needed to prevent a forfeit.

Elections highlightannual meeting Door prizes, discussions, awards (see page 3) and ballot-counting highlighted the annual league membership meeting on Dec. 9. A record 321 ballots were cast in the 10-candidate race to fill four positions on the Board of Directors, the volunteer group that oversees our league. Susan Scholler, Bobby Gregg and Mark Splettstaszer sought re-election. Jody Myers, who had filled the seat vacated by Bill Klinkenberg in 2015, opted not to run because of other commitments. When the ballots were counted, two candidates tied for the fourth spot, prompting the board to expand by an extra member, at least for now. Bobby, Susan and Mark were re-elected. They are joined by Rocky Osborn, who served from 2014 through 2016, and Barry Gordon, who is new to the board. The board thanks the other candidates who professed a willingness to serve the greater softball community: Dave “Bear” Barrigan, Terry Davis, Chuck Tipton, Gene Webb and Ann Willkett. Treasurer Clint Berger also announced the league’s charitable contributions for the year to the Dream Factory, Special Olympics and Operation Breakthrough, a day-care center that serves hundreds of poor families in Kansas City.

CPR and AED By staying active, senior athletes are already taking the first steps to maintain-ing a healthy lifestyle. Still, there are, and will be events where life can hang in the balance. During play last year, two KCMSSL athletes suffered cardiac arrest while on the field. Sadly, despite the efforts of an umpire and two players, one could not be saved. Thankfully, CPR and AED shocks administered by players kept the other person alive and stable

until police and an ambu-lance arrived. The player is in recovery and would like to rejoin us this year. Although we, as senior athletes, are probably less prone to health crises than the general population of our peers, trauma can and does strike — none of us is exempt. Accordingly, CPR train-ing will be offered at the manager’s meeting on March 10 at the Jewish Community Center. Mike Woolery has been invited to demonstrate the basics

of CPR and the usage of defibrillators, which are available at most KCMS-SL venues.

All players wishing to know their base rating, along with their adjusted ratings for younger conferences, can do so by accessing their Leaguesheets online data-base record. Managers will be able to see each play-er’s base rating, or their “adjusted” rat-ing (based on the subject conference’s parameters), during the team’s online roster-building process, as well as when the selected players are actually on the roster. This illustrates, to the manager, what the team’s rating will be going for-ward (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) -- a critical piece of information when the manager returns to select more players. Any team wishing to play at the Bronze

level will be allowed three players rated as Silver (for their specific conference’s age group). All others on the team will need to be rated as Bronze for that specific conference. A team wishing to play at the Silver level can have as many Silver and Bronze players as desired on its roster (again, based on each player’s relative conference ratings), but can have only three players rated as Gold for that conference. A team desiring to play Gold can have as many Gold-, Silver- and Bronze-rated players desired, but can only have three Platinum-rated players. Any team wishing to have four or more next-higher-level-rated players on its ros-ter will face a decision. The team can re-tain all of those players and move up to the next level of competition. It can re-lease enough of those higher-level players to remain at its current competitive level.

Or, the team will need to acquire appeal-rating approval on enough of those next-higher-level players to trim that specific group of players to three by completing the “Forms and Downloads” link at the top of our website’s home page For the benefit of our managers and the organization, 2018 will be business as usual. Rosters, which can carry up to 25 players, will be accepted “as is” but will run parallel to our new Player Skill Rating system. This will allow everyone to assist us in debugging and tweaking the system while providing managers the ability to adjust the team’s roster, if nec-essary, in preparation for when the sys-tem goes live in 2019.

This men’s 60+ Draft conference plays double-headers starting at 9:30 a.m. with the season opening on April 19. For the previous seasons, we have had five teams, with not quite enough players to expand to a sixth team. An increase in registrations could allow us to use all three fields and eliminate bye weeks from the schedules. The sad passing of league fixture Clyde Jones has created a vacancy for a team manager. If expansion allows, we will also need a sixth manager. To manage a team, or to obtain further information about the league, please contact Larry Hightower at [email protected] or call 573-230-3688.

Saturdays morningsat Roe Park

Both the Saturday competitive 60+ conference and 60+ draft conference will be played at Roe Park, 104th and Roe Boulevard in Overland Park. The leagues play one 15-week schedule from mid-April to September. We don’t play on holiday weekends, all-star Satur-day or a couple of tournament weekends. Competitive teams play one nine-in-ning game starting at 9 a.m. Draft teams play one seven-inning game starting at 10:30 a.m. We will have six teams in the competitive conference again this year. Most players then change teams and play in the draft conference, which should have four teams again this year. We’ll have players from 60 years old to players in their 70s and early 80s. If you haven’t played softball in awhile, come on out and give the draft conference a try.

Matrix shows fees, deadlines The matrix that starts on this page shows each conference affiliated with the Kansas City Metro Senior Softball League. It helps managers know when to turn in money and also shows players the opportunities that exist. The league is adding several opportunities this year, including a 65+ men’s division on Tues-days and a co-ed division on Fridays. All players must register and pay their annual dues. In addition, all players new to the league must register online or complete form A-1 found on the league website. Dues are $20 for men who play on 40+ or older teams, $15 for women and $10 for associate members young-er than 40 who play on 35+ teams.

The league’s direc-tors voted this winter to allow our oldest players to buy life-time memberships instead of paying dues each year. Starting in 2019, league members turning 75 or older can purchase the life-time membership for $20. Watch for a re-minder next year!

Men’s 40+conferenceplanned One of the fastest-growing segments of senior softball na-tionwide is the 40+ division. Our league hopes to join that trend this year by launching a men’s 40+ conference of at least four teams. For more informa-tion, contact Steve Krull at 913-709-4648 or [email protected].

Antiques will double their fun in women’s 40+ conference The women’s 40+ confer-ence is happy to welcome the Antiques 70s team to the Platinum/Gold divi-sion this spring. Kenny Stock will manage this group of men. Last year, the women welcomed the Antiques 80s, managed by Bill Klinkenberg, to their Silver/Bronze divi-sion. While there were a few minor adjustments, last season ran well. The ladies enjoyed the com-petition the men brought

to the league and the men were very happy to have a place they could play as a team. I think the upper divi-

sion will benefit great-ly by the addition of this new team.

Every year at the All-Star games and picnic, we play a co-ed game. Every year we hear how much fun that co-ed game was to play. Every year someone says, “Let’s get a senior co-ed league started.” I posted to several different Facebook pages as well as our own and sent out emails to the ladies and we have received lots of interest from

members as well as non-members. We tentatively have set Friday for the night and are working on a location. If you’re interested in participating in this co-ed league, please let me know at [email protected] so we can get something in the works for us all to enjoy.
