Last RiverDogs Game: April 14 The Charleston RiverDogs got their first taste of the new Minor League Baseball extra innings rule in their 4-3 loss to Kannapolis on Saturday in front of a crowd of 4,840 at Joe Riley Park. Charleston (5-5) reliever Braden Bristo (0-1) was handed the loss after Kannapolis’ (6-4) Craig Dedelow scored from second in the top of the 10th inning. Dedelow, who was the final out of the ninth, started the frame in scoring position as part of professional baseball's initiative to speed up pace of play, and the run went unearned in the scorebook. Second baseman Oswaldo Cabrera started on second in the RiverDogs’ half of the 10th but got no further as Charleston was retired in order by former South Carolina Gamecock Tyler Johnson (1- 0). Offensively, Charleston scored its first run in the opening inning when a botched pickoff attempt against Cabrera allowed Wilkerman Garcia to score from third. Two innings later, Steven Sensley annihilated a pitch from Parker Rigler for his third home run of the season and his second in as many nights with a towering shot over the videoboard in right center. The Dogs scored their final run in the seventh when Aron McRee hit back-to-back batters, Evan Alexander and David Metzgar, which allowed Frederick Cuevas to cross. Doggie Bites: Extras, Extras, Read all About it: The RiverDogs played into the 10 th for the first time under the new extra innings format on Saturday. Both teams started their half of the 10 th with a runner on second. Charleston couldnt push across the tying run after Kannapolis took the lead in the top half. The game-winning went unearned, giving Braden Bristo an 0-1 record with 0.00 ERA. You Cant Just Leave Me Here: In Saturdays matchup, Charleston and Kannapolis left a combined 28 runners on base, with 17 of those runners being stranded by the Holy City. That mark of 17 is the most that the Dogs have left on since August 2, 2017 when they stranded 18 in a 10-inning victory over Columbia. Time is a Social Construct: Saturdays 10-inning battle lasted 3 hours and 41 minutes, the longest for the Dogs since going 3 hours, 44 minutes, and 13 innings against Greenville on May 26, 2017, which ended in a 2-1 Charleston victory. The Sixth Sens(ley): Few hitters in the league have gotten off to a better start than Charleston’s lefty masher Steven Sensley. The Baton Rouge, LA native is off to a blistering 13-for-35 (.371) start at the dish, an average that ranks fifth in the league, while also reaching base at a .488 clip (3rd) and slugging .771 (2nd) after crushing his third home run on Saturday. His 27 total bases is second in the SAL only to Nationals No. 2 prospect Juan Soto. A Matchup Nightmare: Steven Sensleys three home runs this season have all come against left-handed pitchers. The lefty slugger is 8-14 (.571) against southpaws in 2018, with five of those hits going for extra bases. Sensley has a history of punishing righties as well. After being drafted last June, Sensley hit .302 with 11 home runs and 40 RBI against dextral hurlers in 2017. Hammerin’ Hess: With three home runs in his first nine games, infielder Chris Hess is one of eight hitters in the South Atlantic League with three or more home runs, sitting tied for third on the leaderboard. Hess had no home runs when he hit just .185 in his pro debut last season in 39 games. His .657 slugging percentage also ranks amongst the top-5 in the league. Right Out of the Gates: The RiverDogs have scored 10 of their 35 runs this season in the first inning. Despite the early offensive outbursts, Charleston is just 2-5 when scoring first this year and 3-0 when their opponents score first.     The Charleston RiverDogs got their first taste of the new Minor League Baseball extra innings rule in their 4-3 loss to Kannapolis on Saturday in front of a crowd of 4,840 at Joe Riley Park.
