From the President

Beyond Marathon Training Program prepares runners for the

inaugural Kalamazoo Marathon

You are about to achieve something extraordinary. You have

trained hard over the winter months, overcoming the many

obstacles that have threatened your progress. Ice and snow

covered streets, frigid wind chills, late sunrise and early sunset,

injury, illness and demanding schedules. Yet, you persevered,

overcoming all odds, in order to prepare for this upcoming

weekend and participate in the inaugural Kalamazoo Marathon.

You may have had to adjust goals. Perhaps you no longer are

striving for a PR, but are running to experience the very first

Kalamazoo Marathon. Maybe schedule, injury or illness

curtailed your efforts to properly prepare for the marathon, and

you dropped down to the half. Perhaps you had to stop running

“Man imposes his own limitations, don’t set any.”

altogether, but still wish to be involved by volunteering. The

opportunities are many.

The May 1, 2011 Kalamazoo Gazette featured a front page article

and supplemental tab with all you need to know about the

marathon. The numbers in the front page story are mind

boggling:

$350,000 in total cost

2,039 gallons of water

65,250 paper cups

1000 Volunteers

67 Sponsors

140 Police Officers

5,884 Michigan Runners

6,178 total

1,305 in the marathon

1, 935 in the half marathon

1,382 in the 5k run

387 in the 5k walk

106 in the Pump n’ Run

1,169 in the Kids Fun Run

And these numbers are just based on pre-registered entries to

date, and don’t include the 500 or more who will sign up

between now and the May 5 deadline for preregistration, or at

the Expo (all events) or Race Day (5k – there is no race day

registration for the full and half marathon. Here are some more

tips for Race Weekend:

Online registration for the Kalamazoo Marathon and

Borgess Run events closes on Thursday, May 5 at 11:59

pm. Registration after that time is still available at the

expo (Radisson) on Saturday, between 12:00 – 8:00pm,

but at an increased fee. There is no Race Day

registration for the half or full marathon. Kalamazoo

Area Runners and the Pacers will have a table at the

Expo just outside the Stone Theatre, where we will be

conducting hour by hour presentations on the course.

Stop by and visit with us.

Pick up your packet at the expo between 12:00 – 8:00

pm. There will be packet pick-up available Sunday from

6:00 – 7:00am – don’t wait until then!

Pasta Dinner will be from 5:00 – 7:00pm at the

Radisson. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the

door.

The marathon and half marathon begin at 7:30am.

Arrive early for parking. The lots on campus will be

filled first, followed by the lot on the East side of

Nazareth (north of Gull Road) and then remote parking

at Gull Crossings between 6:00 and 6:50am every five

minutes. Carpooling is recommended. Don’t arrive near

or after 7:00am.

The electrolyte replenishment provided on the marathon

course is GuBrew and the energy gel Gu. Plan ahead if

you require something different, so this may be new for

many of you. Hydration will be provided approximately

every two miles, with GuBrew provided at all but the first

two aid stations. Gu will be handed out at 9, 10.5 and 18

miles (5 miles for the half). This is not enough for most

runners participating in the marathon. Plan accordingly.

Can’t see the details on the Kalamazoo Marathon Course

map? Steve Rice mapped the course map using Gmaps –

check out this detailed easy to read Kalamazoo Marathon

Course Map

Bob Smola and Bonnie Sexton authored a descriptive

article on the course, and strategies for tackling the

challenging topography. Scroll down on the The

Kalamazoo Marathon Course Map Web Page and read

this unique perspective.

Kalamazoo Area Runners will have a tent in the finish

line area that runners can use as a focal point to meet

and gather before and after the marathon.

Refreshments will be available.

Good luck to all our Kalamazoo Marathoners!

It’s Greener, Faster, and helps our Volunteers! We encourage

our members, whenever possible, to register online for

membership renewals and event and program registrations via

www.signmeup.com. It saves valuable time and resources on

the part of our volunteer leadership team members and your

membership renewals are processed far more efficiently than

those submitted by paper registration and regular mail. It also

helps to reduce the number of follow-up phone calls to verify

email addresses or other information that we are not able to

decipher. Expect anywhere from 4-6 weeks for mail in

membership renewals to be processed.

Please remember Kalamazoo Area Runners does not have a

physical address; we have a P.O. Box which is checked on

average twice a month. Our leadership team members are all

volunteers with full-time jobs, families and other commitments,

and volunteer their valuable time and resources so that

Kalamazoo Area Runners can continue to exist. Other than

monthly board meetings, we all work remotely behind the scenes

in a virtual environment. This means we don’t have the luxury of

sharing an office to facilitate communication and discussion or

easily transfer paper and other items to each other. We realize

not everyone may have a credit or debit card and continue to

offer paper registration capabilities, but if you do we encourage

you to help us out and stay green and efficient!

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Sunday, May 15, 2011

Downtown Kalamazoo Arcadia Creek Festival Place

11:30am – 3:00pm (run/walk events begin at 2:00pm)

Join the Kalamazoo Area Runners Team in the fight

against breast cancer!

The 2011 Susan G. Komen Foundation Southwest Michigan

affiliate has established the goal of raising $500,000 and

attracting 5,000 participants to join in the fight against breast

cancer at this year’s Race for the Cure, and Kalamazoo Area

Runners is excited to once again be a part of it. The 2011 event

will be held Sunday, May 15 from 11:30am – 3:00pm (run/walk

events begin at 2:00) at the Arcadia Creek Festival Place in

downtown Kalamazoo. Each year, the Kalamazoo Area Runners

organizes a fundraising team to participate in the event and raise

support for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

At least 75% of net funds raised by the affiliate through events

such as Race for the Cure stay local and are used to fund breast

cancer community grants in areas such as education, screening

and treatment in the eight counties of Southwest Michigan.. The

remaining 25% of net funds goes directly to fund national breast

cancer research studies and fellowship grants.

Forty-six Children register for the Easter Hash Run

Special to The Rundown from Peggy Zeeb

Despite a cold and blustery day, more than 40 children showed up for the Easter Egg Hunt at KVCC. The

smaller children ran on a wooded path through the woods picking up eggs filled with candy for about a

quarter of a mile. The older kids also picked up eggs, but they ran closer to a mile. Lucky children found

gold covered chocolate coins in their eggs and traded them in for a prize. Fewer adults were willing to

brave the cold for the hash run. For the few brave souls that ventured out, they found a beautiful trail to

run on. When everyone returned, they were able to refuel with sandwiches provided by our sponsor

Centre Street Subway. Two boxes of food and $85.00 in cash were donated to Kalamazoo Loaves and

Fishes. Sincere thanks to volunteers Ryan Clark and Frank and Addie Maston.

Editor’s Note: Thank you to Event Directors Eric and Peggy Zeeb for their leadership and dedication

to making this event possible over the past few years.

KAR Members to participate in Strides for Life

Gale Fischer, Ralph Meyer and Bob Smola will be participating in Strides for Life, a 4 day 100

mile run for the American Cancer Society. This year's event runs June 16-June 19. If you are

interested in donating online on behalf of any member web pages please visit

www.stridesforlife.com. Currently, Neutrogena, a cosmetic company, is matching any donation

made to the ACS, but this promotion only goes through May 15. If you are thinking about donating, I

encourage you to do it before May 15. If you have any more questions about this event or are

interested in getting involved visit www.stridesforlife.com or email Gale Fischer at
